The shot is a universal symbol for messy nights out and morning headaches, but amongst bartenders it's also a ritual that expresses camaraderie and appreciation. From "Snaquiris" to tequila, here is a guide to America's shot-taking traditions.

The arid deserts of the Colorado Plateau in the American West are usually barren, but on rare occasions of rainfall, the landscape can bloom with wildflowers. Photographer Guy Tal, who specializes in the landscapes of the Colorado Plateau, documents the rare desert blooms in stunning photographs. According to Tal, the scorpionweed and bee plant flowers shown in the images bloom for just a few days before disappearing for periods lasting several years. The team behind prix-fixe Union Square restaurant Journeyman (9 Sanborn Ct. at Washington St.) will open Study at summer’s end in Kendall Square at 73-75 Ames St. The restaurant is inside the Broad Institute’s new building, and owner Tse Wei Lim says the restaurant will have an “academic feel,” hence the name. It will serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner; there will be a la carte options, unlike at Journeyman. Lim and his wife, Diana Kudajarova, will also open the Ames Street Deli, adjacent to Study, which will serve inventive sandwiches and cocktails, three meals per day. The menu at both spots is being determined, but “let’s just say you won’t find a turkey club on the menu,” he reports.

This morning the Supreme Court declined to hear a case about religious freedom brought by a Milwaukee school district that wanted to hold its graduation ceremonies in a church and got slapped down by the Seventh Circuit. I tried upholstery spray paint years ago with pretty good results, and I've been wanted to try painting upholstery with a brush for a while too. I got a pair of little white swivel club chairs a few months ago for $30 for the pair. I love the shape of the arms, but the fabric was pretty dingy and old. I knew I would want to reupholster these eventually, but I didn't know what room they'd go in and I wanted to wait to choose a color/pattern. These felt like the perfect candidate for painting the upholstery.


I followed these instructions and used textile medium and Valspar paint from Lowes which is actually acrylic paint. The color I chose was Sunburst Orange from Benjamin Moore. It's a bright, fun coral that's perfect for accent chairs.


The basic idea is you mix textile medium with really, really watered down acrylic paint (so you can buy craft paint if you don't have a huge surface area to cover like I did with two chairs). You spray the upholstery with a water bottle and then softly brush on the paint mixture.

The earliest and most well known example of a dual treatment of Swedenborg came from German philosopher Immanuel Kant, who was a contemporary of Swedenborg. Swedenborg was relatively unknown until 1759 when a fire broke out in Stockholm, Sweden, which threatened to burn down his house and all his writings. At the time Swedenborg was at a dinner in Gothenburg, 480 kilometres away. He suddenly turned pale and described to the guests exactly what was happening, until the fire was put out three houses down from his house. This was investigated by Kant who wrote Dreams of a Spirit-Seer, in which he criticized Swedenborg and knowledge derived from dreams and visions. In private letters Kant stated that he clothed his views in irony, and had great admiration for Swedenborg, but did not publicly admit it for fear of ridicule.
