The handsomest young man in England!

appendixjournal:

Poet Rupert Brooke, who Yeats called “the handsomest young man in England” and who Virginia Woolf bragged about skinny-dipping with, posing as Comus, the Greek god of “nocturnal dalliances“ sometime prior to 1915, the year he died of an infected mosquito bite off the coast of Greece.

Historical Map: San Francisco Muni Transit Routes, 1970 For a...

Historical Map: San Francisco Muni Transit Routes, 1970

For a long period of time, the San Francisco Municipal Railway, (commonly shortened to just “Muni”) used pretty much exactly the same map in their brochures. It seems that each year, they’d simply make any amendments required – addition of new routes, deletion of old ones, etc. –  and then reprint the brochure/map in a new colour combination.

The earliest example I can find, from 1952, uses a sombre two-color palette of black and red, mostly tinted down to greys and pinks. However, by 1970, the map had evolved into this gloriously garish three-colour purple, yellow and black vision that suits the post-Summer of Love San Francisco perfectly.

The map shows all Muni streetcar, coach and cable car services, but with no visible mode differentiation – express services are shown with a dashed line. However, the map’s actually pretty clean and easy to follow: route termini are clearly shown by route numbers in large circles, and there’s enough smaller numbers along each route to allow you to follow them from one end to the other.

Also of note: basic fare is just 20 cents!

Our rating: Groovy, man! A psychedelic re-imagining of a long-serving and functional map. Four stars.

4 Stars!

Chairman Mao Invented Traditional Chinese Medicine

by Alan Levinovitz
Russian Sledges

'For Mao, as for the Senate, health care policy also reflected national ideology. While the Senate resolution praised naturopathic medicine as providing “consumers” with “more choice” (does it get more American than that?), Mao emphasized “complete unification,” a grand dialectical Marxist synthesis of Chinese medicine and Western medicine. “This One Medicine,” exulted the president of the Chinese Medical Association in 1952, “will possess a basis in modern natural sciences, will have absorbed the ancient and the new, the Chinese and the foreign, all medical achievements—and will be China’s New Medicine!”'

In case you missed it, Oct. 7–13 was designated Naturopathic Medicine Week, according to a Senate resolution sponsored by Sen. Barbara Mikulski and passed by the Senate with unanimous consent. Among the reasons the Senate cited:

The world's most isolated tree was knocked over by a drunk driver

The world's most isolated tree was knocked over by a drunk driver

A lone acacia, known as the Tree of Ténéré, once stood defiantly in northeast Niger. For ages it lived companionless in the vast Sahara desert, the only tree for over 250 miles, until one day, some idiot came along and rammed it with a truck, snapping it in half.

China's Smog As Seen From Space

China's Smog As Seen From Space

by Eyder Peralta

We told you earlier this week about how smog choked the northeast Chinese city of Harbin, which is home to 11 million people.

Today, we get a stunning look at just how bad the problem is from an image taken by the Suomi NPP satellite on Tuesday. That murky gray you see below is all smog:

Heavy smog has shrouded much of eastern China, and air quality levels have been dropped to extremely dangerous levels. The heavy smog is caused by industrial pollution, coal and agricultural burning, and has been trapped by the mountains to the west and wind patterns. The thick haze of smog is clearly visible as the murky gray color in this true color satellite image.

NASA/NOAA

Today, as the smog has cleared, National Geographic highlights a big reason for China's terrible pollution: Coal is used to fuel 70 percent of the country's energy needs.

Pope suspends German 'luxury bishop'

Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst of Limburg ordered to leave his diocese amid scandal over his alleged lavish spending

Pope Francis has ordered the German Roman Catholic prelate known as the "luxury bishop" for spending €31m(£26m) on a residence to leave his diocese for an unspecified period.

The move, just short of a resignation, was taken against Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst of Limburg two days after he met the pope at the Vatican to discuss the scandal in the German church at a time when the pontiff is stressing the importance of humility and serving the poor.

Would You Live In This Giant Terrarium?

Well it may not be a true terrarium, but this concept design by Almasov Aibek is a cylindrical, transparent house centered around a living tree.  Talk about getting close to nature!  I wonder if the tree would lose out somehow by not being exposed to the wind and the elements.  Not to mention - pollinators!  Or would you let bees into your house on occasion?

Tell me in the comments - would you live in a house like this?

Boy Scout leaders destroy ancient formation in Utah's Goblin Valley

by Mark Frauenfelder

Matthew says: "Here's a YouTube video of three men destroying a rock formation in Goblin Valley, Utah. Geologists estimate the rock formation was approximately 200 million years old, formed during the Triassic Period (Mesozoic Era)."

I wonder if the rock can be replaced? If so, these men should be made to pay for it.
