Indian Battleaxe Dated: mid-late 19th century Measurements:...

Indian Battleaxe

  • Dated: mid-late 19th century
  • Measurements: overall length 77 cm

The massive steel head is chiseled overall with floral work and the Hindu god Krishna flanked by two “gopis”, all inlaid in brass within pavilions topped by brass parasols. It has a steel top spike and hardwood haft.

Sidenotes:

  1. "Gopi" is a word of Sanskrit origin meaning "cow-herd girl".
  2. In Hinduism specifically the name “gopi” (sometimes “gopika”) is used more commonly to refer to the group of cow herding girls famous within Vaishnava Theology for their unconditional devotion (Bhakti) to Krishna as described in the stories of Bhagavata Purana and other Puranic literatures.
  3. Of this group, one gopi known as Radha (or Radhika) holds a place of particularly high reverence and importance in a number of religious traditions, especially within Gaudiya Vaishnavism.

Spain's Been In The 'Wrong' Time Zone For Seven Decades : Parallels : NPR

by russiansledges
On Oct. 23, 1940, Hitler took a train to the Spanish border to woo Spain's Fascist dictator, Francisco Franco. But Spain was in ruins from its own Civil War in the late 1930s, and Franco didn't have much to offer. He stayed neutral, but switched Spain's clocks ahead one hour, to be in line with Nazi Germany. Ever since, even though Spain is geographically in line with Britain, Portugal and Morocco — its clocks are on the same time zone as countries as far east as Poland and Hungary. Now, more than seven decades later, the Spanish government is weighing whether to change them back.

The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Episode Has Already Broken a World Record

by Rebecca Pahle
Russian Sledges

still haven't seen it; don't tell me anything

…and no, it’s not for “most unsubstantiated Internet rumors based on a single episode of television.” No more “but will [insert actor here] really not be in it?,” “But when he said he’s involved, did he mean in the actual episode or some other part of the celebrations?,” or “Moffat says this, but he’s probably lying.” I don’t even know what to do with myself now that that’s all over.

“The Day of the Doctor” now holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest simulcast of a TV drama. We knew it would happen, but now it’s official; Steven Moffat was presented with the award at London’s Doctor Who Celebration.

Said Moffat upon accepting the award:

“For years the Doctor has been stopping everyone else from conquering the world. Now, just to show off, he’s gone and done it himself!”

The episode’s simulcast took place in 1,500 cinemas across 94 countries in six continents, which was a difficult thing (though not, I’d imagine, one lacking in financial benefit) for the  BBC to pull off. Says BBC Worldwide CEO Tim Davie:

“We knew we were attempting something unprecedented in broadcast history, not only because Doctor Who is a drama, unlike a live feed event such as a World Cup football match or a Royal Wedding, but because we had to deliver the episode in advance to the four corners of the world so that it could be dubbed and subtitled into 15 different languages. If there was any doubt that Doctor Who is one of the world’s biggest TV shows, this award should put that argument to rest – and how fitting for it to receive such an accolade in its 50th year.”

I don’t even want to think about the threats that must have been made to keep the episode from leaking. I’m guessing Daleks were involved. Or maybe Moffat promised that if anything got out before its time those responsible would be strapped into a Clockwork Orange-type contraption and forced to watch Love & Monsters until madness set in.

DRAWER OF MEMORIES: On the culinary trail of Haruki Murakami - AJW by The Asahi Shimbun

by russiansledges
Haruki Murakami's prose is filled with more than sympathetic characters and dreamy atmosphere. They’re also filled with great recipes ranging from the simple (ham spaghetti in his first work “Hear the Wind Sing”) to the involved, such as the home-prepared Japanese meal that sets the scene for love in his best-recognized work, “Norwegian Wood.” There’s so much material, in fact, that a cottage industry of sorts has developed around the author’s culinary interests.

Zaha Hadid dismisses "ridiculous" claims that Qatar stadium resembles a vagina

by Marcus Fairs

News: architect Zaha Hadid has hit back at critics who have compared the design of her Al Wakrah stadium in Qatar to a vagina, describing the comments as "embarrassing" and "ridiculous".

Speaking to TIME magazine, Hadid said: “It’s really embarrassing that they come up with nonsense like this. What are they saying? Everything with a hole in it is a vagina? That’s ridiculous.”

She suggested that the comments would not have been made had the architect been male:  “Honestly, if a guy had done this project…"

Earlier this week Zaha Hadid Architects unveiled the design for the stadium, which is one of several new structures that will be built to host soccer matches during the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Al Wakrah stadium by Zaha Hadid Architects looks like a vagina

Critics immediately compared the 40,000-seater stadium, which its architects claim is based on the curving lines of an Arab dhow fishing boat, to female genitalia.

"I'm no expert, but I think those are labia," Cosmopolitan.com's sex and relationships editor Anna Breslaw told Equire.com.

"Any discerning human will be quick to recognize that the building looks exactly like an enormous vagina," wrote women's website Jezebel.com.

Comments from Dezeen readers included "One vagina in a sea of penis towers" and "It looks like a baboon's bum".

The Al Wakrah stadium has been co-designed by AECOM and features a flowing roof designed to protect spectators from the worst of Qatar's extreme heat.

"With its shiny, pinkish tinge, its labia-like side appendages and its large opening in the middle, the supposedly innocent building ("based upon the design of a traditional Qatari dhow boat") was just asking for trouble," wrote The Guardian's Holly Baxter on the ensuing furore.

It is unusual for an architectural structure to be compared to a vagina; comparisons with the male organ are far more common.

Hear the Boston Symphony Orchestra Announce Kennedy's Assassination | TIME.com

by russiansledges
As can be heard from the broadcast, after the radio announcer’s introduction to the first scheduled work, a suite from Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera Le coq d’or, Leinsdorf emerged and spoke just 53 words, his voice sounding a bit odd, as if taking care to clearly and a little unnaturally project every word. He falters slightly only once, in his second sentence. “Ladies and gentlemen, we have a press report over the wireless. We hope that it is unconfirmed, but we have to doubt it. That the president of the United States has been the victim of an assassination. We will play the funeral march from Beethoven’s Third Symphony.” Gasps and screams of shock can be heard after the statement of JFK’s death, and after the change of programme is announced there is a general panicked hubbub that takes its time to subside. Then, as the orchestra begins its funeral dirge more slowly than is usual, every note throbbing with pain, there is only a numbed quiet as the news, the awful reality, sinks in.

Thieves steal Winthrop woman's SUV; woman's sister hunts it down and grabs it right back

Lisa Paulson has her Ford Escape back tonight thanks in part to modern tracking technology but mostly due to her sister's chutzpah.

Paulson woke up Tuesday morning to find her Escape stolen right out of her driveway. After contacting police, who basically told her there wasn't much they could do, she called EZ-Pass to cancel her account, her sister, Kathleen O'Connell, reports. "Oh, well, that's funny," the woman at EZPass said - the car had just gone through the tolls on the Tobin Bridge.

Amazon now lets customers give Prime subscriptions as gifts

by Chris Welch
Russian Sledges

Amazon Prime has been around for years, so it may come as some surprise that before today customers couldn't gift subscriptions to friends and family. But that's finally changed. The online retailer now lets you pay the annual $79 fee on behalf of someone else, and pick a day when they'll receive an email notification of their gifted membership. Of course, that nets the lucky recipient all the perks of Prime, including free two-day shipping, $3.99 overnight deliveries, and access to Amazon Prime Instant Video. And while it's not the most original or thoughtful holiday gift, we doubt you'll find many people who would complain about getting a free year of Prime. If you've already got someone in mind, visiting amazon.com/giftprime is all it takes to get started.

Internet Cats Embroidered on Fancy Shirts by Hiroko Kubota shirts fashion embroidery cats

Japanese embroidery artist Hiroko Kubota was in the process of making custom sized clothes for her smaller-framed son when he made a small request: could some of the shirts have cats on them? Kubota explains her son was somewhat obsessed with cats and had collected a small library of adorable images found around the web.

After making a few cat shirts shirts the artist posted photos of the pieces online and unsurprisingly they quickly went viral, spurring Kubota to open an Etsy shop under the brand Go!Go!5 where she started selling the shirts at an impressive price tag of around $250-$300 apiece. But price was no object for internet cat fanatics and the shirts have been snapped up almost as quickly as Kubota embroiders them.

You can see many more shirts here. All photos courtesy the artist. (via Spoon & Tamago)

xoJane: "Fat for an Asian:" The Pressure to be Naturally Perfect

by russiansledges
I’m not fat -- by American standards. I am considered slightly chubby for an Asian in China. I'm 5’1” and about 100 pounds, give or take five pounds depending on whether it’s New York Fashion Week or final exams week at Columbia. Everyone assumes I’m naturally petite because of my Asian genetics, but the truth is, I count my calories like Ebenezer Scrooge counts his gold coins and run and do yoga like Lululemon is paying me. The moment I “let myself go,” the weight bounces back. I try not to talk about it, though, because the moment I do, someone always says, “Shut up, you’re Asian. You have genetics on your side.” That's the problem -- Asian girls are suffering from body image issues and eating disorders because they try to hold themselves up to the expectation that Asian girls are naturally slim. In fact, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Diane von Furstenberg said, “It is great to design for Chinese women, because they have great bodies. They are slim and have tiny waists, so it's nice.”

Map: Senate Democrats Nuke the Filibuster

by Chris Kirk

After years of threats, Majority Leader Harry Reid finally took the “nuclear option” today and heavily limited the power of filibustering. Senators will no longer be able to filibuster votes to approve executive branch nominees and judicial nominees for lower courts, which means the president’s nominees will henceforward require only 51 votes instead of the 60 required to defeat a filibuster. Senators will still be able to filibuster Supreme Court nominations.

“There’s some evidence that removing physical barriers and bringing people closer to one another does promote casual interactions,” explains a Harvard Business Review piece that nicely summarized the research on this subject. “But there’s a roughly equal amount of evidence that because open spaces reduce privacy, they don’t foster informal exchanges and may actually inhibit them. Some studies show that employees in open-plan spaces, knowing that they may be overheard or interrupted, have shorter and more-superficial discussions than they otherwise would.”

I remain glad that most of my colleagues have to ring a doorbell to get onto my floor now. I feel bad about it, sometimes, and I always feel like I ought to feel bad about it all the time, but it's kind of awesome.

Jon Stewart Calls Truce After Deep-Dish Pizza Fight With Rahm

"We accept Jon's truce and will continue to stand up for our city against any sort of uncalled-for insult, culinary or otherwise," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's (D) communications director, Sarah Hamilton, told TPM on Thursday.
