Smartphone usage could be analyzed to warn of depression

by Ben Coxworth

Although you might not realized you're depressed, your smartphone may know better

One of the problems with depression is that because it often forms so gradually, many people don't even realize that they're suffering from it – they just assume that normal life is pretty dreary. With that in mind, researchers from Chicago's Northwestern University have devised a method of analyzing at-risk individuals' smartphone use, to see if they're developing signs of the disorder.

3D Printed Muscle is Inflated During Printing

by James Hobson

Just when you think you’ve seen it all… [Fergal Coulter] over on the RepRap forums just came up with a method of 3D printing on inflatable structures — wait what?

The process uses a custom 3D printer with a paste extrusion head, and a 4th axis — with a pneumatic air supply. Using a spray deposition method, a silicone tube is formed, and then each layer is cured using a infrared light, which is also built into the system. Once the silicone is thick enough, it is then pressurized to inflate through the air-permeable mandrel. A laser then scans the shape of the inflated silicone to allow the computer to generate tool paths for the surface. Then you hit print. Simple right?

We’re not even sure how to begin explaining how he came up with this. Basically, this method of 3D printing allows for the manufacture of some very unique flexible components, perhaps the most interesting application is “Dielectric Elastomer Artificial Muscles” which is a really advanced form of pneumatic artificial muscles (which you can make from hardware store parts too). It would also make building a soft robot much easier than casting the silicone muscles by hand like we saw last week.

It’s a fascinating new direction for 3D printing and we’re excited to see the technology continue to advance. There’s more information available on [Fergal’s] main website.

[Thanks for the tip Matt!]

Embroidered Zoetrope

Project by Elliot Schultz creates physical animations with textiles and a turntable:

This project encourages viewers to watch and engage with animation physically.

Discs were created with animated sequences embroidered onto their surface. They have been designed to be played on standard turntables and their shape and size is inherited from 10" vinyl records. The animation is activated when a strobe light illuminates the discs in sync with the embroidered frames of animation.

This work was completed for my degree project at the ANU School of Art in 2013.

Incredible 3D Rendering of Pluto’s Icy Alps

by Jason Major

It’s only been a day since we got our first glimpse of Pluto’s mountainous terrain from New Horizons but there’s already a 3D video, created by Mattias Malmer. Of course it’s not comprehensively accurate imagery of the region, since there was only that one perspective image to work from, but it gives a fascinating look at what the area might look like from multiple angles. Check it out above and let your Plutonian fantasies run wild (again!)

En Plein Vol

Collection of installations by Blizzard Concepts utilizes hair-dryers in creative ways, from dancing string to guiding a paper aeroplance:

This new project combines magic and visual arts;  burlesque / Unusual and light poetry.  Endless loops, random paths, levitation, etc;  we come face to actions over which we have no control but which by themselves, reaching the goal.  And impracticable, the improbable certain parts gently pushes us towards reverie.
