Photos, Video: Phish Throws Wildest NYE Golf Cart Garden Party Ever

by John Del Signore
Phish roared back into Madison Square Garden for the 27th time Monday night, capping off an instantly-sold out four night stand with a raucous four-and-a-half hour celebration replete with ping pong ball cannons, speeding golf carts, scantily-clad sunbathers, dancing dwarfs, backflipping acrobats, and a small ocean of balloons unleashed from the ceiling at the stroke of midnight. Say what you want about Phish, you can't accuse them of skimping on the New Year's balloon budget: [ more › ]

Glowing full-moon credenza

by Cory Doctorow

If Sotirios Papadopoulos's "Full Moon" credenza is half as cool in real life as it is in this rendering, well, it'll be pretty cool. This'd be a fun remake/refurb project for junk-shop furniture:

A striking credenza, with a photo-realistic, luminous image of the moon printed on its surface.

Coated with ELI (Eco Light Inside), an eco-friendly material developed by the designer, which creates a realistic, glowing effect when the lights go out.

Light Into Tones, in an Optoelectronic Hurdy-Gurdy With Rotating Wheels [Video, Images]

by Peter Kirn

This isn’t like any Hurdy-Gurdy you’ve seen or heard before.

Derek Holzer’s optoelectronic Tonewheels Hurdy-Gurdy is a combination of mechanical, optical, and electronic elements, part sculpture and part instrument. It recalls vintage mechanical and optical instruments, but with a sound that is decidedly modern and strange.

In the translation, something wonderful happens: this becomes a serious punk instrument, producing surprising, hard-edged sounds. The wheels turn, and the gizmo rocks.

Combining disciplines in this sort of design also means merging different skill sets, so it’s telling that input for the instrument has come from other artists, including friend-of-the-site circuit designer Eric Archer, who has been involved in our Handmade Music series (now MusicMakers). Coming full circle (ahem), I’m thrilled that Mr. Holzer will be organizing MusicMakers at CTM here in Berlin. We have a call out now to participate in the hacklab for that event; I’ll share more details on that event here in the coming days.

I’m a great fan of Derek’s work; there’s plenty to explore below and I hope we cover more soon.

TONEWHEELS HURDY-GURDY(VIELLE A ROUE OPTOÉLECTRONIQUE) from macumbista on Vimeo.

This optoelectronic hurdy-gurdy was commission by the Acces(s) Festival, Pau France in October 2012.
TONEWHEELS is an experiment in converting graphical imagery to sound, inspired by some of the pioneering 20th Century electronic music inventions, such as the Light-Tone Organ (Edwin Emil Welte, 1936 Germany), the ANS Synthesizer (Evgeny Murzin, 1958 USSR), and the Oramics system (Daphne Oram, 1959 UK). Transparent tonewheels with repeating patterns are spun over light-sensitive electronic circuitry similar to that used in 16 & 35mm motion picture projectors to produce sound.
The TONEWHEELS Hurdy-Gurdy presented at Acces(s) is not an “interactive” artwork in the common sense. While it does not reward the impatient museum visitor with flashing lights and noises at the simple touch of the button, it does invite participation in the process of technological music creation. Although it first appears to be a very traditional instrument known to many folk-music cultures, it functions in a very different way which can only be discovered by playing it.
The artist would like to thank Tobias Traub of Oroborus Customs e.K. and Carlo Crovato for their invaluable assistance in creating this instrument. Circuits designed by Jessica Rylan and Eric Archer are also used within the system.
More information on this project can be found at macumbista.net/?p=3020

This is just one piece out of the Tonewheels project, all working with this medium of physical, optical discs. Here’s a beautiful video from another iteration:

cuT 30[draft]-TONEWHEELS filmed by Eyes_For_Ears from macumbista on Vimeo.

The over-arching project has its own page:
http://umatic.nl/tonewheels.html

The Hurdy-Gurdy is described on Derek’s blog:
http://macumbista.net/?p=3020

And lots of other projects, including his new Solstice Soundboxes, are detailed there, as well:

Hope some of you get to see Derek and me in person in Berlin next month, and for everyone else, we’ll see you on the Internet.

Pirate Radio Station In Florida Jams Automotive Electronics

by Soulskill
New submitter titanium93 writes "For months, dozens of people could not use their keyless entry systems to unlock or start their cars when parked in the vicinity of the eight-story Regents bank building in Hollywood, FL. Once the cars were towed to the dealership for repair, the problem went away. The problem resolved itself when police found equipment on the bank's roof that was broadcasting a bootleg radio station. A detective and an FCC agent found the equipment hidden underneath an air conditioning chiller. The man who set up the station has not been found, but he faces felony charges and fines of at least $10,000 if he is caught. The radio station was broadcasting Caribbean music around the clock on 104.7 FM."

Video: Huskies Pull Hipster On Rollerblades Through Bushwick

by Ben Yakas
Video: Huskies Pull Hipster On Rollerblades Through Bushwick If you're as sad as we are today because of the death of the emaciated beached whale in Queens, here's a little something that might pick you up just a little. In the video below, an area man dons his finest rollerblades and gets taken on a rollicking journey through Bushwick by his huskies Casper and Kaiah (he spends much of the trip rollerblading backwards when the huskies pick up speed). Oh sure, this was probably super annoying to anyone ambling along the sidewalks at the time, but the adorable factor kicks this thing way past scooter children level. [ more › ]

This Is a 160-Foot Long Trampoline

by Marina Galperina
This Is a 160-Foot Long Trampoline

So long, losers. I’m outta here, going to the Nikola-Lenivets village in Russia where they’ve got this Nikola-Lenivets Project and Festival of Landscape Objects going on. It’s pretty sweet. You can take a walk through a forest park by JUMPING ON A LONG TRAMPOLINE!

But seriously.  Nikola-Lenivets is jumpin’ — it’s a dilapidated village turned art colony where all the weirdos have fled in the early 1990s and it’s due for a resurgence. This trampoline is one of the projects competing for a prize judged in January 2013.

The Salto Architects’ Fast Track is what it sounds like: An entire lane of foot traffic for you to bounce on.

“Fast track” is a integral part of park infrastructure, it is a road and an installation at the same time. It challenges the concept of infrastructure that only focuses on technical and functional aspects and tends to be ignorant to its surroundings. “Fast track” is an attempt to create intelligent infrastructure that is emotional and corresponds to the local context. It gives the user a different experience of moving and percieving the environment.

And it’s 160 feet of “intelligent design” and fuck all y’all fun. Woo.

Gallery Owner's Upper East Side Death Ruled A Suicide On Saturday, the body of an "impeccably dressed" woman was found on Madison Avenue between 72nd and 73rd Streets. It turned out to be gallery owner Marijana Bego, who owned the Bego-Ezair Gallery located on that street (as well as in the Hamptons). This Is A Story About A Person Who Volunteered To Run A Marathon While Hungover For $1,000

    by Bess Levin

    nikesweatband

The following note was found in our inbox earlier this afternoon:

“Our junior guy came in this morning hung over and stinking like booze. After a few of us made comments on how awful he looked, he responded by letting us know that he’s in good enough shape to run a marathon, right now. Almost in sync and without hesitation, we said “done.” He named his price: $1000 (WAY TOO LOW) and within 2 minutes, he had $1000 cash on his desk. He just left the trading floor and is headed back to his apartment to change into running clothes. He initially said he could finish the 26.2 in less than 5 hours in his work clothes as long as we let him change into sneakers. We decided to let him change into running gear, since we’re good guys, but he still has the 5 hour time limit. We’re tracking him via his iPhone’s GPS. Happy Friday.”

Electrical Grid Hum Used To Time Locate Any Digital Recording

    by samzenpus
illtud writes "It appears that the Metropolitan Police in London have been recording the frequency of the mains supply for the past 7 years. With this, they claim to be able to pick up the hum from any digital recording and tell when the recording was made. From the article: 'Comparing the unique pattern of the frequencies on an audio recording with a database that has been logging these changes for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year provides a digital watermark: a date and time stamp on the recording.'"

New Jersey’s First Weed Dispensary Opened Today

    by Andy Cush
New Jersey’s First Weed Dispensary Opened Today

After three years of setbacks and legal wrangling, New Jersey’s first medical cannabis dispensary finally opened in Montclair today. A 40 minute drive west of Manhattan, the Green Leaf Compassion Center promises legit, 100 percent legal weed to anyone with the right set of symptoms.

The New York Times was on hand to report on the opening, a relatively subdued affair. “It’s a comforting experience,” said Joseph Stevens, chief executive of the center. “They’ve lived in the shadows for so many years. He added that dispensary was a place sick people could “feel safe, have no fear of prosecution, and go home.”

Stevens and his business partner, Julio Valentin Jr., seem serious about ensuring that Green Leaf Compassion Center remains a serious, medically-oriented place. Stevens, for his part, says he’s even been keeping the fourth Crack Commandment: when asked if he’d ever tried his own product, Stevens responded, “No, I don’t. I just don’t like it.”
