TsuruTonTan Already Slammed With Eager Udon Lovers Waiting Hours For Noodles

by Serena Dai

Good luck trying to get in

Japanese udon chain TsuruTonTan’s new Union Square outpost is already being swarmed by the noodle loving masses. The restaurant that slings house made udon noodles and non-traditional udon bowls has quoted hours long wait times since it opened. Eater staffers have tried — and failed — to get in on both Monday and Tuesday. One was politely turned away on Monday after being told an hour and a half wait, which would have gone past the restaurant’s closing time. Yesterday, a different Eater staffer was quoted two hours around 7:30 p.m., while another guest was quoted 45 minutes for one seat at the bar when he arrived at 6 p.m. En fuego! The restaurant’s not even serving the full menu this week. "The best part was seeing groups of people arrive by Uber, stride confidently in, then skulk out, defeated," says Eater critic Robert Sietsema, who did not get into the restaurant. Did you actually eat at the hottest noodle house in Union Square? Is it worth it? Let us know.

Did You Know Colonel Sanders Has Bonkers Anime Fanart in Japan?

KFC is a major brand worldwide, but in Japan the Colonel has taken on almost mythical proportions. In his pure white suit and perpetual smile of southern hospitality, he's less a famous restaurateur and more symbol of happiness. KFC has been so successful over there that buckets of fried chicken have become a traditional meal associated with Christmas celebrations. Perhaps that's why Japanese fan-artists have fun with the symbology of fast food mascots, they're just being irreverent. It also might explain why he seems perpetually depicted in a life-or-death battle with Ronald McDonald at all times.

18 Photos That Show Real Footage Behind Disney Films

Walt Disney released the first wildly successful feature-length animated movie (Snow White), and he did so by utilizing and popularizing animation techniques that made creating these films easier, the most important of which is rotoscoping. Rotoscoping is when animators trace the frames of live action film footage to make realistic animations. Disney's studio used rotoscoping to expertly mimic the movement of real people and bring our favorite Disney movies to life. Here are photos that compare the live-action footage to the final animated product.

Kathryn Beamount as Alice in Wonderland

Beamount started working with Disney animation studios when she was 13. First, she voiced Alice and served as the character's live model in 1951's Alice in Wonderland. Then, she did the same for Wendy in Peter Pan in 1953. Here are photos of the crazy things she had to act out while playing Alice.

Helene Stanley

Similar to Beaumont, actress Helene Stanley didn't just serve as the live model for one Disney princess but two: Aurora and Cinderella. She also played the non-princess Disney heroine Anita from 101 Dalmations.

Sherri Stoner

In 1989, 30 year old actress Sherri Stone played Ariel's live model, meaning she got to do fun stuff like comb her hair with a fork and hang out with a stuffed crab. Two years later, she got to be the live model of Belle for Beauty and the Beast.

Imgur user jamieleto combined the live-action footage and the corresponding animated stills to create these fascinating photos and to show how the live models helped shape the final product.

25 Cosplays That Prove Russia Isn't F*cking Around

Cosplay is a worldwide fandom phenomenon, but it feels like one country is putting on its A game more than the others. When we've put together cosplay roundups for the site it was the Russian scene that always seem to have the slickest, most high-production shots. Maybe it's the fact that they're literally the point where East meets West, or maybe it's that bizarre maelstrom of Tsarist opulence and Post-Communist hustle. Put for whatever reason, Mother Russia has the cosplay game on LOCKDOWN.

Ramen Burger Plans New Permanent Home in Long Island City

by Serena Dai

It will serve the burger and new “special creations”

The creator of novelty food phenom Ramen Burger is planting a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Long Island City. LIC Post reports that Keizo Shimamoto will be opening The Ramen Shack in his existing central kitchen at 13-13 40th Ave., serving both new ramen creations and the hamburger with ramen buns that people line up for at Smorgasburg.

He apparently already sells four different versions from the central kitchen for delivery via GrubHub, but the new shack will be an expansion and a sit-down experience, with 10 seats and potential "special creations," Shimamoto tells LIC Post. "People can try something new every time they come in," he says. The new shack will open next month.

Shimamoto mostly serves the ramen burger at markets like Smorgasburg, but this is not the first time Shimamoto has tried his hand at a more permanent outpost. He opened Ramen Co. in the Financial District in 2014, which has since closed, and a location in Los Angeles closed in February after less than two years in business. Still, it maintains its popularity on the market circuit. Despite the ramen burger’s first appearance in 2013, its stand at Smorgasburg in Williamsburg sports a very long line every weekend to this day.

Dogs recognize both words and tone to know when they’re good

by John Timmer

Enlarge / "Who's a good puppy?!" (credit: Enikő Kubinyi)

In most tests of general intelligence, dogs rate as reasonably clever, but nothing like primates. The one place where dogs beat primates is in interacting with humans. It's not clear whether dogs are better at reading human intentions or simply more motivated to act on them, but dogs truly seem to get us.

Now, researchers in Hungary have tested dogs' willingness to cooperate with us by getting them to sit still in an MRI machine. By tracking the dogs' brain activity, the researchers were able to determine that dogs can recognize not only words, but the emotional tone behind them. Dogs recognize when both words and tone indicate praise. That's when they feel rewarded.

The work was performed by a group of researchers based in Budapest, which becomes important when we get to the words the dogs were responding to. The hypothesis behind their work: dogs can recognize both the meaning of what's being said (technically, its lexical content) as well as the intonation used in saying it. In other words, it's not enough to say "good boy" to your dog—you have to sound like you mean it.

Miso Glazed Chicken Wings

by Megan Keno
Miso Chicken Wings

My biggest determination of the year is to not let chicken wings be a one-season dish. They are synonymous with football season, but once those 13 weeks of games go by, then poof! Chicken wings are gone from our regular rotation.

These miso glazed chicken wings are fit for Game Day, for sure, but they also serve year-round for any gathering or even just a fun weeknight meal.
