Newswire: Aaron Paul and Bill Murray met, were super cool last night

by Marah Eakin

Bill Murray, Aaron Paul, and Matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas hung out last night, thereby plunging the world into a vortex made up of simultaneously cool and very uncool things. The trio bro-ed out at Fox Sports 1’s Super Bash in New York, with Paul tweeting about spotting Murray during a live Kings Of Leon set. The Breaking Bad star was apparently pretty overwhelmed, writing, “I’m at Kings Of Leon in NYC and Bill Murray is standing behind me. What should I do? Kiss him? Tackle him? Confess my love? #billmurray.” Based on the photo subsequently posted to Thomas’ Twitter account, the answer was apparently “put an arm around him, open your mouth, and look really excited,” just like it would be for anyone else, bitch.

Newswire: Sony firms up plans to turn Spider-Man into its own Avengers-style movie universe

Along with Fox’s plans to expand and link up its Marvel properties X-Men and Fantastic Four, Sony recently began hinting at its own strategy for expanding Spider-Man with sequels and spinoffs—because like the comics that spawned them, all Marvel movies and TV shows must be part of a vast, interconnected universe, so long as that universe exists within the single studio that owns them. Now comes some more details on how Sony will sprout its own Avengers-sized world from the single seed of Spider-Man: The studio has formed a “franchise brain trust” of writers and producers to develop a single, continuous story thread that will tie together the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4, as well as the newly confirmed Venom and The Sinister Six, standalone spinoffs focusing on the black alien goop and cadre of supervillains, respectively, who evilly conspire to ...

Newswire: Jonathan Banks is officially part of the Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul

by Sean O'Neal

The first non-Bob Odenkirk piece of Better Call Saul has fallen into place, as Deadline reports that Jonathan Banks has signed on to reprise his role as Mike Ehrmantraut in the Breaking Bad prequel. It’s welcome, though perhaps not totally surprising news, as Vince Gilligan has long said he’d like to see familiar Breaking Bad faces popping up in the story of Saul Goodman’s earlier years—and if you’re bringing back familiar faces, who’s gonna say no to this smile? So far, Odenkirk and Banks are the only two confirmed to return, meaning Lavell “Huell” Crawford is no doubt patiently waiting for the word. If only there were a popular humorous meme to capture that.

Who reads books in America, and how?

by Cory Doctorow

The Pew Internet and American Life project has released a new report on reading, called E-Reading Rises as Device Ownership Jumps. It surveys American book-reading habits, looking at both print books and electronic books, as well as audiobooks. They report that ebook readership is increasing, and also produced a "snapshot" (above) showing readership breakdown by gender, race, and age. They show strong reading affinity among visible minorities and women, and a strong correlation between high incomes and readership. The most interesting number for me is that 76 percent of Americans read at least one book last year, which is much higher than I'd have guessed.

DVD Review: It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is indulgent, messy fun

The notion of an epic comedy seems oxymoronic—comedies tend to be fleet and compact, opting to leave the viewer wanting more rather than risk overextending an initially hilarious concept until it loses its punch. (“If it bends, it’s funny. If it breaks, it’s not funny.” —Alan Alda, Crimes And Misdemeanors.) It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, however, doesn’t know from restraint, starting with the repetition in its title. The original cut of the film reportedly clocked in at five hours, and even the final release version runs close to three; it boasts a dozen major characters split at one point across five separate plot strands, and features dozens of blink-and-miss-’em cameos, including such legends as Jerry Lewis, Jack Benny, and The Three Stooges. The result is as bloated and misshapen as it sounds, with a panoply of clashing comedic styles and as many dead spots as laughs. The sheer ...

Newswire: Cormac McCarthy's ex-wife had a fight about aliens and then pulled a gun from her vagina

Cormac McCarthy’s ex-wife Jennifer squatted in the cracked terracotta terrain of New Mexico and dug her heels into the carpet and holstered the Smith & Wesson in the capacious hollow of her vagina. The gun flashed silver before it disappeared inside her as she had disappeared inside the bedroom she shared with her boyfriend on Aventura Road. Jennifer thought of space aliens and squared the gun in her vagina.

The police report would say Jennifer McCarthy had been arguing with her boyfriend over “space aliens” and had grown tired of it. The police report would identify her as Jennifer McCarthy and as a 48-year-old artist and as the woman who got a divorce from novelist Cormac McCarthy in the calescent Texas summer of 2006. The police report paid no mind to what the argument was about besides “space aliens” and that she had left home because of it. ...

TV: TV Review: A new sketch show from exec-producer Bob Odenkirk channels the spirit of Mr. Show

by Josh Modell

Since 2007, TV Club has dissected television episode by episode. Beginning this September, The A.V. Club will also step back to take a wider view in our new TV Reviews section. With pre-air reviews of new shows, returning favorites, and noteworthy finales, TV Reviews doesn’t replace TV Club—as usual, some shows will get the weekly treatment—but it adds a look at a bigger picture.

Doing sketch comedy really well is incredibly difficult, mostly because it’s just so easy to fail completely. And though the form has a long history on TV, its major successes are few and far between: For every Saturday Night Live or Chappelle’s Show, there’s a dozen Acceptable TVs or Frank TVs. Sketch is also a tough sell to both networks and audiences according to Bob Odenkirk, executive-producer and co-star of IFC’s new series The Birthday Boys ...

TV: Great Job, Internet!: Donald Glover got hit in the crotch repeatedly by Gillian Jacobs, and there's video

by Marah Eakin

With Donald Glover set to appear in just five episodes of Community this season, it seems only right that the rest of the cast might be a little miffed at him for bailing. If the Vine Alison Brie posted yesterday is any indication, Glover could be taking the brunt of the cast’s punishment via his groin. In the clip, Glover and Gillian Jacobs play “Dick Hits,” which is basically comprised of semi-full water bottles being hurled at Glover’s crotch, all while he stands there and takes it. The clip’s only six seconds long, but includes at least one solid dick hit and one that Glover claims “hit the tip,” so it’s like the best parts of America’s Funniest Home Videos, but with all your Greendale pals.

Music: Great Job, Internet!: This slowed down version of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" is better than any cover

by Kayla Reed

Whether somebody putting a 45 of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" on 33 rpm was a careless accident or intentional experiment, the result is incredible. Parton's high-pitched voice goes down a few octaves, and the slower tempo makes the yearning in the lyrics all the more heartfelt. Bask in the beauty below, but please note: Multiple listens are encouraged.
