Gently, With a Chainsaw – A HEATHERS Art Show at Meltdown!

by Rachel Heine

What is your damage, Heather? Excuse you, Heather, I’m actually pretty excited for tonight because there’s going to be a Heathers-inspired art show kicking off tonight (April 24th) at Meltdown! Well, f— me gently with a chainsaw!

Yes, you read that right. The Nerdist Showroom at Meltdown Comics, located at 7522 Sunset Blvd in Los Angeles, CA, is hosting an art show dedicated to one of our favorite 80s cult flicks, Heathers, and not just that — there will be free refreshments, a themed photo booth, and maybe even some special guests. Tonight’s festivities start promptly at 7pm, and continue on til 11pm (PT), so if you’re in Los Angeles, what are you waiting for? Grab your wicket and get swinging!

Here’s what Meltdown had to say about the event:

It’s 1988 and it’s about time you went from a Girl Scout Cookie to a true Heather. Join the popular kids, the outcasts, and everyone in between as we pay artistic homage to one of the greatest teen cult classic films of all time. Take your parents’ car and make your way to the Nerdist Showroom at Meltdown (7522 Sunset Blvd, LA, CA 90046) to enjoy free refreshments, a round of croquet in the photobooth, and maybe even some special guests! Our love is god, let’s go look at some art (and get a slushie).

Marvel Studios is hard at work promoting Ant-Man, the next film...

Marvel Studios is hard at work promoting Ant-Man, the next film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring a petty criminal-turned superhero who can shrink himself to the size of, you know, an ant. Back in January Marvel created an ant-sized movie trailer. That was soon followed by an ant-sized poster. Now they’ve launched a playful series of miniature billboards in Australia. If ants do like to watch movies (we know they frequent literary centers), we’re pretty sure they don’t bother to buy tickets, but we still love the idea.

Ant-Man opens in theaters on July 17, 2015. Keep your eyes peeled for teeny-tiny insects in attendance so they don’t get crushed.

Scientists Are Building a 3-D Printed Eyeball That Can Record Your Vision

by maxplenke@me.com (Max Plenke)

If you could swap the eyes you were born with for 3-D printed upgrades, would you? What if they had 15/10 vision, photo filters and the ability to record what you see?

A research and design group in Italy is trying to bring this sci-fi concept to life. They've undergone a 12-year project to upgrade our vision with features like Wi-Fi and self-repairing technology, propelling the human body years into the future.

Want To Watch BattleBots In Person? Wait, That's Not Even A Question

by Chris Mills

Down here on God’s green earth, there are few things more enjoyable than watching two hand-built robots, lovingly crafted from sweat and silicon tears, shredding each other into unrecognisable chunks. And whilst you could watch this spectacle on TV, you could also pay the low, low price of $11.54, and go see it live.

Portraits of Dogs Before and After Bath Time

by Michael Zhang

Daisy_Shih Tzu

“Dry Dog Wet Dog” is an ongoing project by Brisbane, Australia-based pet photographer Serenah Hodson. It’s a series of side-by-side portraits showing dogs before and after they’re soaked with water.

Serenah says she got the idea for the project while washing her own dogs. “Their personalities change when they know it’s bath time,” she writes. So, she decided to shoot a series of photos showing how a dog’s appearance and personality both change when it comes to bath time.

Huskies on water

Russian photographer Fox Grom on his recent walk with his dogs has captured a beautiful series of photos. He discovered a frozen lake covered with rainwater that created the illusion of the dogs walking on water. The end results are stunning, the way the water blends with the sky is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

I Painted 11 Album Covers On My Face For Record Store Day

by Natalie Sharp

I melted, smudged, gunned, contorted and painted my face to celebrate my love of vinyl for the Record Store Day.

After the success of last years Record Store Day face paints I decided to Paint myself all over again. This time It would be bigger, better and more challenging as I opened up my suggestions to the great republic of Facebook. Before I knew it I was agreeing to do 40 different album covers on my face. Of course this didn’t happen as I don’t live in a void and I had to try and fit doing this around my work. The faces were taking up to 8 hours to complete.

The hardest by far was Mike Oldfields – Tubular bells. Painting the straight lines of the bent silver bell over my face would only work If I continued to look straight into my handheld magnifying mirror. However Painting King Crimson and Peter Gabriel was an absolute joy as ther are both very painterly. In fact I barely used my brushes for King Crimson, I would just keep smudging it with my fingers.

I am both, a musician called Lone Taxidermist and a make up artist, so Record store Day seemed like a good way of merging both of my passions. One of the reasons why I love vinyl is because of its true long playing physical format. I decided to listen to each album in full from start to end over and over again until the face was complete. Every time the album finished I would have a glass of wine! But I was getting too drunk especially after Human League!
