ESPN FC's Craig Burley and Ross Dyer discuss whether a potential six-game ban for spitting would fit the crime following the spitting incident between Jonny Evans and Papiss Cisse. The Football Association has announced Jonny Evans will serve a six-match ban and Papiss Cisse a seven-match ban after being found guilty of spitting at each other. The incident occurred during Wednesday night's 1-0 Premier League win for Manchester United over Newcastle United at St James' Park. United defender Evans denied he spat at the Newcastle striker, pleading not guilty to the FA, although Cisse accepted the charge and offered an apology.

Hovering Home: Near-Invisible Mirrored Forest Residence

by Steph
[ By Steph in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

hovering home 1

A white box seems to hover in mid-air in the middle of the forest, with no visible supports suspending it from adjacent trees. This structure isn’t a treehouse at all, and it’s actually at least twice the size it appears. It virtually disappears into its natural environment thanks to the mirrors covering most of its bottom story, reflecting nearby trees and the forest floor.

hovering home 6

hovering home 3

Izabelin House by Reform Architekt is a woodland retreat outside Warsaw, Poland, designed as a tranquil getaway that blends into the forest, becoming a part of it. Approaching the two-story dwelling from the street side, it doesn’t appear out of the ordinary. It’s when you step to the side or the back that the illusion comes into play.

hovering home 5

The white upper story is the only thing that gives the home away from certain angles – otherwise, it might be near-invisible. Other mirrored structures employ reflective panels on the entire exterior surface, or alternate them with wood for an effect that’s extra-surreal. Another approach covers the entire outside of a forest home with images of trees as camouflage.

Snow Calligraphy: Reverse Graffiti Artist Tags Parked Vehicles

by Urbanist
[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Street Art & Graffiti. ]

snow calligrapher signature work

For years, this graffiti calligrapher has made his mark around New York City, but some of his best work is reserved for special (and somewhat unpredictable) occasions, relying on seasonal snowfall.

Processed with VSCOcam with lv01 preset

Known for his interior and exterior calligraphic murals as well as his signature snow pieces, Faust notes that virtually “everyone has an affinity for writing in the snow as a child. When most people grow up they lose the urge. I guess I just haven’t been able to shake it.”

snow car front artwork

As with other forms of reverse graffiti, his snowy script is ultimately temporary and removes material that would be wiped and swiped away by brushes or wipers, thus leaving no lasting impact or damage.

Some of his messages speak to the season (of snows and ice) while others are simply signatures left on the hood, trunk, windshield or window of a car as a simple surprise to brighten the dark winter days of passers by.

New Artificial Lighting Tricks Human Brain into Seeing Sunlight

by Urbanist
[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Fixtures & Interiors. ]

skylight

Access to natural daylight has long been one of the biggest limiting factors in building design – some solutions involve reflecting real daylight from the outdoors, but until now no solution has been able to mimic natural refraction processes and fool our minds into thinking we are surrounded by actual sunlight.

Developed by CoeLux in Italy, this new form of artificial light is able to dupe humans, cameras and computers alike using a thin coating of nanoparticules to simulate Rayleigh scattering, a natural process that takes place in Earth’s atmosphere causing diffuse sky radiation. Far beyond simply making lights brighter or bluer, this approach accurately replicates how miles of atmosphere transform light within just a few millimeters of surface space. Professor Paolo Di Trapani of Italy’s University of Insubria has so far spent over 10 years working on this system.

artifical snlight interior image

artficial skylight system design

The source of illumination is an LED projector that emits white light in a spectrum that mimics rays of sunlight – meanwhile, a sophisticated optical system creates the sensation of the distance between the sky and the sun. Though the images shown here are all real and unedited, extensive 3D modeling preceded physical tests, prototypes, live demos and, finally, the finished product. “The objective included further developments of the existing Maxwell Render software functionality to include light scattering properties, light polarization effects, custom spectrum data (through spectrum curves or raw data) and light spectrum measurements, by including a virtual spectrophotometer,” explains the inventor.

light bring to market

daylight light soucre innovation

The result is an effect that carries the same qualities we are used to experiencing outside, from color and saturation to light quality. The company also boasts that these photos are untouched and that their fake skylights in showrooms fool people in person just as effectively, appearing to have infinite depth just like one would expect looking up into the sky (James Turrell’s skyspaces and this work by Christo come to mind). The entire setup is incredibly thin and thus easy to set flush with a wall or ceiling, forming a convincing faux sunlight or window.

artificial light photo shoot

light real simulation design

The potential applications are effectively endless, from lighting deep indoor spaces (such as subway tunnels) to replacing natural light in places where winters drag on and daylight hours are short. The company sees opportunities in areas like healthcare and elder care facilities where it may not be possible to put patients or residents near real windows for spatial or health reasons.

lux live winner award

Currently, three lighting configurations are possible, simulating various broad regions – Mediterranean, Tropical and Nordic – featuring various balances of light, shade, hue and contrast. They are also working on additional offerings, including simulated daytime sequences (sunrise through sunset) and color variations to reflect different kinds of weather conditions.

3 custom types

Present iterations can also cost up to tens of thousands of dollars but the they are aiming to bring down the price in future versions as well as through scale of production. Ultimately, one could imagine the shapes of buildings changing radically around such an invention – the creators of this breakthrough have likened it to the elevator, which transformed the way we were able to build vertically in urban environments.

Mansplaining Mansplaining: A Man Explains Mansplaining by Michael Mayberry

Timmy the Tooth

If you can't follow along I will gladly explain.

Mansplaining is a portmanteau1 that’s meaning is credited to Rebecca Solnit.2 The term refers to a situation in which a man, presuming that his listener (especially a woman) has inferior knowledge, explains something in a condescending way.

In case you’re not hip on your Solnit, they3 coined the term around 2008 in a blog piece called “Men Explain Things to Me; Facts Didn’t Get in Their Way.” They tell of how a man whom4 they met at a party instructed them to read a book he himself had not read, which turned out to be the very same book that Solnit had written. Obviously, this man is the butt of the joke. This scenario sounds like it’s from a sitcom. But let me break it down for you: X-splaining is way too easily appropriated5 by third-wave feminists6 in the post-modern age.

That’s why I think Mansplaining should be called by its actual name, which is didacticism.7 And news flash, wimmin:8 a supposedly inclusive feminist often times becomes the didact in her conversations with the plebeian9 masses when she straightsplains to her gay friends about lesbian rights, cisplains to her trans friends about the stigma associated with transgendered identification, when she whitesplains to her black friends about the oppressive administration, skinnysplains to her fat friends about healthy eating, omnivoresplains to her vegan friends about the evils of the factory farm industry, blogsplains to her print journalist friends about the merits of indie-electro writing, or humansplains to her cat that sometimes sex can be both pleasurable and painful.10

Now that you are properly equipped with this information, you have all the intellectual tools to go out there and “smash the patriarchy” and start X-splaining. Good luck.

- - -

1 A blend of two words.

2 The second most important contemporary feminist, just behind Emma Watson.

3 Some feminists prefer gender neutral pronouns

4 “Whom” is used when who is in the accusative case (i.e. it is a direct object)

5 A frequent word in feminist and crit-theory discourse, meaning to use something inappropriately. Macklemore and Iggy Azalea, for instance, appropriate the culture of people of color in order to sell songs to Caucasian children.

6 Third wave feminists prioritize inclusion and are often sex-positive.

7 For a lesson in didacticism, see the writings of any major male writer.

8 A feminist variant spelling of “women” which seeks to free a womyn (singular) from the tyranny of hegemonic nomenclature.

9 As opposed to the elite patricians, plebeian refers to the ordinary Roman citizen.

10 Male cats have barbed penises. The barbs are designed to scrape out rival cats’ semen, making sex excruciating for the female cat. An aspect of third-wave sex-positivity is justifying sado-masochist sex practices as healthy.

Town in a Tower: 14-Floor Highrise Houses Whole Alaskan Hamlet

by Urbanist
Timmy the Tooth

Fuck this.

[ By WebUrbanist in Destinations & Sights & Travel. ]

town tower copy

High-minded Modernists of the mid-1900s envisioned futuristic all-in-one cities in the sky where we would work, place, live and love, but would have been surprised to learn that their ideal has perhaps been mostly closely realized in the remote village of Whittier, Alaska, where virtually everything happens under one roof.

town in tower thumbnails

A fourteen-story structure known as Begich Towers, formerly an army barracks, is host to most of the town’s residents as well as its post office, grocery store, health clinic, laundromat and church. Writer Erin Sheehy and photographer Reed Young (montage shown above) visited and photographed this remote village, traveling sixty miles from Anchorage, Alaska and through a 2.5 mile, one-lane tunnel to get to there.

town buckner building exterior

This is a place of extremes, which helps explain why its occupants are happy to stay indoors as much as possible – average snowfalls of 250 inches (up to 400 inches some years) and glass-shattering winds make using underground tunnels a preferred means of getting to the few other buildings in town, including the local school. The other large structure in the area is the Buckner Building, abandoned but favored by youth who need to get out and go somewhere.

town abandoned buckner building

Le Corbusier’s Unite d’Habitation comes to mind, a Brutalist village-in-the-sky concept with alternating floors and complex sections designed to accommodate layers of living, working, shopping and recreating throughout. Ultimately its realization devolved into a typical apartment complex, but the external factors simply weren’t there to reinforce it as an internally self-sufficient community.

town glacier ice water

More from Young about the town year-round: “In the summertime Whittier is bustling. Seasonal workers come for jobs on fishing boats, charter boats, or in the cannery, and cruise ships bring hundreds of thousands of tourists to the harbor. But thriving harbor industries—freight, fishing, tourism—don’t seem to translate into growth for the city.”

town cruise ship port

Like a college town times a few thousand, with visitors far outnumbering actual residents – hundreds of thousand visit the area annually but most drop off for just part of a day then get back on their train or cruise ship and leave town again.

town in a tower

It is, in a way, a company town, but it can also be claustrophobic for those used to warmer climates and more private spaces. “The Alaska Railroad Corporation is the majority landowner in Whittier, but it doesn’t pay property taxes, and it employs few residents. A supply barge comes into town once a week, but most of the workers who unload the freight commute from Anchorage. Not everyone who tries to live in Begich Towers can take it—a newcomer from Florida compared it to jail—and there simply isn’t much space on which to build alternate housing” Aside from the four-image montage, additional images for this story by Travisnate’sgirl, daviddFrank KovalchekRoss Fowler and Brian Digital.

Homemade sandwich bread

by PJ Hamel

You’ve mixed and kneaded flour and water, salt and yeast, maybe a touch of sugar, some milk, butter, perhaps an egg…

You’ve shaped a loaf, put it into your pan, watched it rise over the rim. Tucked that precious loaf into your preheated oven, and watched proudly as it rises some more and becomes wonderfully golden.

Then, you reach into the oven for your perfectly glorious loaf of homemade sandwich bread, and…

Well, as they say on Facebook, what happens next may surprise you.

Your bread falls – or shrinks, another type of falling. You slice off a nice, hot piece, and your beautifully crowned loaf is suddenly misshapen. Or it just sits there looking dull… and becoming duller by the moment, as it loses its oven-hot “sheen.”

What’s a sandwich bread lover to do?

The following tips guide you through those crucial moments between hot-from-the-oven and cool-on-the-counter.

DSC_7116

1.  First, make sure your bread is done.

In days gone by, seasoned bread bakers tapped the bottom of their loaf to listen for a particular sound – best described as a hollow ring – that meant the bread was done.

If you can reliably judge baked bread that way, more power to you. But I find it easier simply to take the bread’s temperature at its center. For one thing, I don’t have to tip my sandwich loaf out of its hot pan to tap its bottom, risking damage to a loaf that’s not yet fully baked (to say nothing of a painful burn to myself).

And second, I trust my thermometer’s accuracy more than I do my hearing.

Breads made with all-purpose flour (a.k.a. white bread) are generally considered fully baked once they reach a minimum temperature of 190°F. I like to let my loaves go a tiny bit longer, up to 194°F or so, just to make sure their fully set, structurally speaking.

breadtemp204

Breads that are particularly dense/heavy – think hearty whole-grain loaves, or sweet breads packed with fruit and/or nuts – should reach 200°F to 205°F.

I invested in a Thermapen digital thermometer long ago; and make no mistake, it’s an investment. At $98.95 (tempered somewhat by its free shipping), it’s the Rolls-Royce of digital thermometers.

But it’s been so worth it. I use it regularly for all kinds of cooking and baking, from homemade candy to hamburgers to roast chicken to bread. It’s super-accurate; and very fast, which means if the bread isn’t done, I can quickly return it to the oven, before it starts to cool and potentially suffer damage to its texture.

IMG_3680A

2. Don’t remove your loaf from its pan too soon.

This is a loaf of bread that I turned out of its pan immediately upon removing the pan from the oven. I watched in horror as it sank like a deflating balloon.

Now, in retrospect, this recipe needed some fine-tuning; the liquid/flour/fat balance had tipped too far towards liquid/fat, and this is a rather dramatic demonstration of a soft sandwich loaf where that happens.

But even if the bread doesn’t collapse, the simple fact that you’re handling it while it’s super-hot and its structure is still pliable means that you can leave dents.

DSC_7126

Or your cooling rack can leave dents. Get a load of the deep impression the edge of the cooling rack left in the bottom of this hot loaf.

So – hands off! At least until it cools just a bit. I give my bread at least 1 minute in the pan (perhaps using that minute to brush it with melted butter – see next tip).

And if the bread seems particularly soft, I allow it to rest in the pan for up to 5 minutes. Longer than that, the side and bottom crust starts to steam, which will make it leathery rather than tender.

photo3

3. For a satiny, tender, buttery crust, brush bread with melted butter.

The easiest way to do this is simply to run a stick of butter over the top surface of the hot loaf. If the bread has cooled enough that butter won’t melt on contact, then melt your butter and apply it with a pastry brush.

IMG_9962

4. Resist temptation – don’t slice your bread while it’s hot! Wait until it cools down.

I know, it’s SO tough not to simply slice off that golden, tender end piece, spread it with butter, and devour. But doing so allows much of the moisture in your loaf to evaporate. Think about it: there’s liquid in the form of steam inside your loaf, and it likes nothing better than to escape through that enormous gaping hole you’ve just made by cutting off its end.

In addition, as you’re slicing the bread you’re naturally compressing it just a bit, both with your hand, and with the knife you’re running through it. It’ll set in this compressed/compromised state, never regaining its full height.

Trust me; it’s far better to wait until the bread is cool, and then slice off its end. Pop it into the toaster very briefly, just to warm; you’ll enjoy that same just-baked experience.

DSC_7141

5. Once the bread is completely cool, slice it up and freeze anything you won’t be using within a couple of days.

Your home-baked bread doesn’t include any preservatives or stabilizers, so from the moment it reaches its optimum quality (as soon as it’s cooled to room temperature), it starts to go downhill.

hot4

But don’t despair; the freezer (though NOT the refrigerator) is your friend. Slice the bread, and wrap two to five slices or so at a time securely in plastic wrap – however many you/your family is liable to consume within a day.

Slip those plastic-wrapped packets into a larger plastic bag. Squeeze the air out, secure with a twist-tie or clip, and store in the coldest part of your freezer, somewhere the bread won’t be subjected to temperature changes from the freezer door opening and closing.

When you need bread, remove one packet and thaw, still wrapped, at room temperature. It’ll be nearly as good as the day it was baked.

IMG_9994

And if you toast it, I guarantee you’ll never know it had been frozen!

Of course, the bread will gradually deteriorate in the freezer over time, principally by becoming dry. But guess what? That process happens MUCH more quickly in the fridge. Put your bread in the refrigerator, and I guarantee it’ll become stale overnight.

I hope you’ve learned something today, and that your bread-baking takes a turn for the better. We love hearing from you – do you have any post-baking tips for preserving your homemade loaf’s quality? Please share them in “comments,” below.

Bracket All the Things: Reclaimed-Surface Tables & Shelves

What started as a set of infinitely-flexible table legs has now spawned a second but equally stellar sibling design: a series of wall brackets that let you turn scraps into shelving and switch out surfaces whenever you find something neat and new (or old).

floyd table bracket set

Made in Detroit, the Floyd Leg system allows users to choose what kind of material they want to create anything from desks to dining, coffee, side or even ping-pong tables. And for any who find this specific solution too expensive, it could also be viewed as great inspiration for do-it-yourself alternatives.

The owner simply splices the desired surface between the colorful and variable-height brackets, be it reused lumber and scraps or new off-the-shelf boards – as a bonus, the bracket system means the surfaces can also be uneven.

floyd shelf bracket colors

Using the same design strategies, the Floyd Shelf mounts to walls and will let you swap in and out whatever you want to use With its industrial aesthetic, the adjustable bracket set lends itself particularly well to rugged or worn found materials.

“I was moving frequently between cities and constantly disposing of furniture. The legs were born out of this circumstance and the idea also resonated with our friends. We decided to launch a Kickstarter to gauge what the public reaction would be to the legs,” says Kyle Hoff, creator and co-founder. With an initial goal of producing 100 sets, the pair raised funds for an initial run of over 1,500 sets and shipped to 33 countries.

feetup

“Backers sent in photographs of their creations. It was exciting to see people employ the legs in ways that reflected their own living spaces,” says Alex O’Dell, co-founder. The Floyd Legs are produced in Detroit utilizing the existing manufacturing infrastructure. “We appreciate having our production facility only a 10 minute drive away. It allows us to more close- ly integrate the manufacturing and design processes, while also ensuring the quality of our prod-ucts,” says Hoff.

floyd shelf

The Floyd Leg serves as a pilot piece for a greater line of products that the company will be launching in September 2014. “We’re committed to producing simple, flexible furniture made for denser living in cities. High design furniture is inaccessible and mass produced often means disposable,” says O’Dell. “One of our goals is to really rethink the way people buy and engage with furniture—from the purchasing experience to shipping and assembly,” says Hoff.

Modscape Cliff House 4

The architects took inspiration from the way barnacles cling to the hull of a ship, hanging the home off the side of the cliff instead of perching it at the edge. This configuration makes it feel like an extension of the cliff face, opening up incredible views of the water.

The prefabricated, modular house would be anchored to the cliff using engineered steel pins, with entrance through a carport on the top floor.

FC United 1 Buxton 1

by noreply@blogger.com (Uwdi Krugg)
Tuesday 19th August 2014
Evo Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division
FC UNITED 1 BUXTON 1
Admission: 1,914
Admission: £8
Programme: £2
Tea Hut Stuff: Over run by the starving hordes
Weather: Late sunny periods, dry turning chilly
Parking: A personal record long distance tonight, not acclimatised to this kind of trek for a game at Bower Fold, I usually park right beside the ground for a Stalybridge game.
Whats the point of a poxy little blog report when a club as popular as FCUM have their very own television coverage, a radio station that wipes the floor with even the likes of Talk Shyte and Radio 5 Live and some very good photographers shooting anything that moves whether its on or off the pitch, not to mention a much younger audience than your average non league crowd all busy, busy, busy taking loadsa snaps on their rental contract iPhones.

I'll get me coat......

Step aside Tea Hut and simply enjoy the best low-cost mid week entertainment since Billy Smarts circus did the North West in 1972. This even beat the time Jumbo shit on the ring masters boots.

Just turning up and seeing the flags, hearing the cutting wit and enjoying the all surrounding presence of a cultural clan like enthusiasm for this charismatic ground breaking club is worth your 8 quid admission money. And they don't even move into their first ever home ground until November (at least Stalybridge is a lot better than Bury)?

Some people don't like all the attention, so called smugness and razzmatazz that gets self generated at a FCUM game. I say give it a chance. I'm a die hard moaning bugger but some of the principles this lot stand up for we should all applaud. More to the point, on a boring Tuesday evening, its almost bloody good fun. I bet the host club renting their very nice stadium for this game wished they could pull in a couple of thousand for a game against the likes of a Buxton outfit (no disrespect to the visitors pulling power intended).

The atmosphere the crowd brings, which is further complimented by the self rule principles and co-ownership of the club, makes a somewhat refreshing change for what most of us non league football followers normally witness. The opposition get plenty of stick for sure, as do the officials but I see the very same abuse, banter, call it what you want at games with less than 50 people on the ground.

Its the same game, football, no matter where you play it and its what happens on the pitch that ultimately matters (isn't it)? FCUM are no different in this aspect and even the wonderful atmosphere couldn't save tonight's encounter with Buxton turning out to be a bit of a Dog. Missed passes, a lack of positional awareness and dare I say it 'nerves' seemed to inhibit both sides on a continual basis. Fragmentation and disjointed play ate away at tactics, strategy and confidence, we ended up being provided with little true quality. Sure, there were a few good chances at both ends but nothing seemed to threaten to ignite the game. A first half FCUM tap in from Wolfenden only a yard out put them 1 up in the 34th minute before Buxton got a well deserved equaliser from a late Liam Hardy penalty. A fair result on the balance of play.

YAY! or NAY!!! ?

[ By WebUrbanist in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

windowless jet panoramic projection

The latest contender for ‘most scary yet exciting passenger cabin ever designed’ has trumped its predecessor – the first version boasted horizontal strips of screen on both sides of the plane’s interior while this latest one features effectively see-through ceilings as well as walls.

The S-512 being developed by Spike Aerospace boasts a four-hour flight time from New York to London, in part due to the reduced engineering requirements of a windowless cabin (and leading to at top speed of 1375 MPH).

In this audacious private jet, the windows and their supporting infrastructure are instead being replaced with view screens that stitch together live footage being shot of the plane’s surroundings while it is in flight.

Meanwhile, six months later, Technicon Design has released concept drawings of Ixion, which likewise uses cameras mounted on the fuselage and wings to capture images for interior high-resolution display, but with an added dimension of also disappearing the rooftop of the cabin.

The nearly-continuous visual experience would be segmented by strips providing lights and air conditioning, and in theory the projections could be shifted on demand, from realtime scenery to other full-surround displays. For now, though, only the first is a series proposal for a real private plane – the latter is a conceptual design pushing the idea further but with no plan for actual deployment.
