‘And the Other Way is Wrong’, A Video Essay Exploring Director David Fincher’s Unique Style of Photography & Editing
“And the Other Way is Wrong” is a video essay by film enthusiast Tony Zhou (see previously) of Every Frame a Painting that explores the unique style of photography and editing by film director and producer David Fincher.
For sheer directorial craft, there are few people working today who can match David Fincher. And yet he describes his own process as “not what I do, but what I don’t do.” Join me today in answering the question: What does David Fincher not do?

such a needed campaign. i wish they’d have included native americans as well, though, as cultural appropriation of them in costumes is just as awfully common.
It’s that time of year again when these go around. And I will keep reblogging them. And if I see the joke ones I am likely to rip them apart with prejudice.
I will reblog this every year and unfollow anyone who posts joke fandom spinoffs of this very serious and important commentary.

With all the heat Anita Sarkeesian gets for her Tropes series, you’d think it was a new topic, but Gene Siskel & Roger Ebert had a discussion on a similar theme when they were talking about the influx of slasher movies on their show in 1980.

Adult Elephants Come to the Immediate Rescue of a Baby Elephant Who Fell Backwards and Couldn’t Get Up
Three adult elephants come to the immediate rescue of a tiny baby elephant who fell backwards in to a crevice and couldn’t get up at the Kaeng Krachan Elephant House at Zoo Zürich in Switzerland. The adults were quickly able to set the infant right and all four of went on their merry way.

When I say ‘I’ve never seen Dirty Dancing, any Aflred Hitchcock movie, any Star Wars film, the Die Hard series, the Terminator movies, that dancing one Kevin Beacon is famous for, Top Gun, a James Bond movie, etc,’ you should see the look on people’s faces. Black people who have immersed themselves in dominant culture kinda give me a ‘really?’ look, but white people are simply flabbergasted. They’re confused, lost, sometimes offended. But then if I ask them ‘well, have you seen Coming To America, Crooklyn, Lean On Me, Raisin In The Sun, Do The Right Thing, School Daze, Harlem Nights, Women of Brewster Place, The Color Purple, etc,’ those same white people seem taken back that they would have been expected to see those films/play.
It’s like this entitlement to have your cultural phenomena known and appreciated when you clearly refuse to even acknowledge the contributions of others.
Not only do people of color tend to be intimately familiar with the cultural tastes of white people while having our cultural contributions ignored when not being appropriated, we’re expected to…and that’s where I have a problem.

This!!!! This…is so important. I am tired of White supremacy being the standard by which what aspects of popular culture are determined to be valuable or not. And truly sick of Black culture being simultaneously hyper-consumed for appropriation, but erased through devaluation.

"Oh, you know girls just mature faster than boys."
Hmm did you ever consider
that might be because boys’ indiscretions are excused with a simple “Boys will be boys,”
while we simultaneously force girls to grow up too fast by sexualizing them at increasingly younger ages?
"Teachers are often unaware of the gender distribution of talk in their classrooms. They usually..."
Teachers are often unaware of the gender distribution of talk in their classrooms. They usually consider that they give equal amounts of attention to girls and boys, and it is only when they make a tape recording that they realize that boys are dominating the interactions. Dale Spender, an Australian feminist who has been a strong advocate of female rights in this area, noted that teachers who tried to restore the balance by deliberately ‘favouring’ the girls were astounded to find that despite their efforts they continued to devote more time to the boys in their classrooms. Another study reported that a male science teacher who managed to create an atmosphere in which girls and boys contributed more equally to discussion felt that he was devoting 90 per cent of his attention to the girls. And so did his male pupils. They complained vociferously that the girls were getting too much talking time.
In other public contexts, too, such as seminars and debates, when women and men are deliberately given an equal amount of the highly valued talking time, there is often a perception that they are getting more than their fair share. Dale Spender explains this as follows:
“The talkativeness of women has been gauged in comparison not with men but with silence. Women have not been judged on the grounds of whether they talk more than men, but of whether they talk more than silent women.”
In other words, if women talk at all, this may be perceived as ‘too much’ by men who expect them to provide a silent, decorative background in many social contexts.

Let’s be clear on something. The fat kid’s problem isn’t being fat. It’s being HATED for being fat. It’s being targeted by everything from bullies and parents (perhaps unwittingly, because yeah, it was done to me and I was a fat kid) doing abusive things to him to get him thin to the First Lady spearheading a campaign that pushes forward the agenda to increase stigma against fat children by making sure they get labeled as being unhealthy right off the bat and assumed to be eating nothing but “junk food”.
And all the while, any thin kids who may be eating nothing but “junk food” are handwaved away, because if they’re thin they must be healthy and don’t need any nutritional intervention, right? Any fat kids who are actually getting only occasional meals and live in poverty and have dire food insecurity in their lives are assumed not even to exist or even told it might be good for them to miss meals because they’re fat.

"Queerness, to me, is about far more than homosexual attraction. It’s about a willingness to see all..."
Queerness, to me, is about far more than homosexual attraction. It’s about a willingness to see all other taboos broken down. Sure, many of us start on this path when we first feel “same sex” or “same gender” attraction (though what is sex? And what is gender? And does anyone really have the same sex or gender as anyone else?). But queerness doesn’t stop there.
This is a somewhat controversial stance, but to me queer means something completely different than “gay” or “lesbian” or “bisexual.” A queer person is usually someone who has come to a non-binary view of gender, who recognizes the validity of all trans identities, and who, given this understanding of infinite gender possibilities, finds it hard to define their sexuality any longer in a gender-based way. Queer people understand and support non-monogamy even if they do not engage in it themselves. They can grok being asexual or aromantic. (What does sex have to do with love, or love with sex, necessarily?) A queer can view promiscuous (protected) public bathhouse sex with strangers and complete abstinence as equally healthy.
Queers understand that people have different relationships to their bodies. We get what it means to be stone. We know what body dysphoria is about. We understand that not everyone likes to get touched the same way or to get touched at all. We realize that people with disabilities may have different sexual needs, and that people with survivor histories often have sexual triggers. We can negotiate safe and creative ways to be intimate with people with HIV/AIDs and other STIs.
Queers understand the range of power and sensation and the diversity of sexual dynamics. We are tops and bottoms, doms and subs, sadists and masochists and sadomasochists, versatiles and switches. We know what we like and don’t like in bed.
We embrace a wide range of relationship types. We can be partners, lovers, friends with benefits, platonic sweethearts, chosen family. We can have very different dynamics with different people, often all at once. We don’t expect one person to be able to fulfill all our diverse needs, fantasies and ideals indefinitely.
Because our views on relationships, sex, gender, love, bodies, and family are so unconventional, we are of necessity anti-assimilationist. Because under the kyriarchy we suffer, and watch the people we love suffering, we are political. Because we want to survive, we fight. We only want the freedom to be ourselves, love ourselves, love each other, and live together. Because we are routinely denied that, we are pissed.
Queer doesn’t mean “don’t label me,” it means “I am naming myself.” It means “ask me more questions if you curious” and in the same breath means “fuck off.”
At least, that is what it means to me.

She has since deleted her entire account but King says they checked & she is indeed a #STL resident w/ years’ worth of tweets from there. “If true, her tweet not only reveals a leak in the grand jury, but gives us an ugly glimpse into how things have gone so far. Since my post about getting drunk and playing Skyrim seemed to be so popular, I got drunk again last night and played The Sims. I’ll be honest, the whole ordeal felt like trying to catch lightning in a bottle and I really don’t think it holds up to the Skyrim post, and I never really found that funny to begin with. But what the fuck do I know, here’s what happened.
plannedparenthoodla: Consent means to give permission. It is...

Consent means to give permission.
It is both people’s responsibility to get consent from their partners. Everyone has the right to decide whether they want to have sex or not.
Consent is…
· Freely given — no pressure, no manipulation, and no asking if it was ok to do halfway through or after the fact.
· Informed — telling them about any STDs they should know about, being honest about using condoms and birth control, and being honest about whether you’re sexually active with other people.
· Something you can take back — it’s ok to stop or change your mind at any time. Saying “yes” once doesn’t mean saying “yes” forever, or “yes” to other sexual activities.
· Enthusiastic — being excited about it, not just letting it happen.
When people think about consent, “no means no” often comes to mind. But saying “yes” is really important, too. A straight-up “yes!” means that no one has to guess or assume anything, and you’ll know they’re really into it.
The Thriving Industry That Helps Encourage Book Censorship

We have rating systems for movies, television shows, and video games—so why not rating systems for books? That's the thought behind services that rate books with the aim of helping parents and protecting children. But these services are contributing to censorship in schools—and harming public education in the process.

Cyber harassment study reveals the unsurprising!
It still amazes me that I talk to guys who still think they get harassed just as much as women online. Like even from people who aren’t clearly and totally gross dumbasses. It kinda makes me think that, even in the best cases, it might be hard to really understand the sheer difference in frequency. You see a woman get harassed on a game and you go “Oh well I’ve been harassed” without understanding that there is seldom a session for her where that doesn’t happen or understanding what her inbox might look like…
That is a sort of stunning degree of difference.
"The data’s in! Women were lying about online harassment!”
"Aha! We knew it!"
“Yeah, they’ve been severely underreporting how bad things are for them, turns out.”
"Wait, what?"
