Hillary Clinton: 'Fight ... America is worth it.'

by rss@dailykos.com (Mark Sumner)

With many on the right still urging Trump to deliver on his campaign promise of naming a special prosecutor with the full time task of pursuing  Hillary Clinton, you might expect the former candidate to shy from the limelight. That’s not the case. Instead, Hillary appeared in Washington on Wednesday at an event to celebrate the Children’s Defense Fund, and delivered an emotional address.

“I know this isn’t easy, I know that over the last week a lot of people have asked themselves if America is the country we thought it was,” said the former secretary of state, bringing the midsize Newseum auditorium to a standstill with her emotional address that she capped off by imagining a conversation with her now-deceased mother. “Please listen to me when I say this: America is worth it. Our children are worth it. Believe in our country. Fight for our values. And never, ever give up."

Hillary Clinton worked for the Children’s Defense Fund as one of her first jobs out of college, and she’s been a supporter of the organization ever since. She told the crowd that appearing there was hard, and that it would have been easy to curl up with a book and “never leave home again.”

But she didn’t.

“Please don’t lose heart, don’t give up on the values we share. Look at the young people we are honoring tonight. If they can persevere, so can all of us,”

Watch her emotional speech below.

alivannarose:

So today we were lunching on the patio and a couple of bees were very interested in my Pepsi. Since it was diet and therefore Not Good For Bees, I was preventing them from getting into the can. So they landed on my hand and head-butted my knuckles, exactly like the cats do when they think I have treats. We went inside and made wee dish of sugar water and I carefully deposited the ladies on the side of the dish, whereupon they daintily chugged that shit down like frat boys at a kegger. Well, being bees, those ladies went back to tell their friends. So soon there were more bees. And they were HUNGRY. Soon the first dish was drained. Then the second. I think the warm weather means the bees can’t really bed down for winter yet, but very few flowers are blooming in mid-November. I remember seeing a post over the summer about making a bee waterer by putting “stepping stones” in the liquid to keep them from bumbling in and getting their wings wet. And by the time I found something to use for that, they’d drained another two dishes. So now, um, here we are. I present: THE BEEZENING.

thebeakerblog:

This “trickster” is highly-adaptable, one of a handful of existing carnivores that evolved on the North American continent. It’s noted for its vocalizations and has earned a special place in Native American folklore – where it’s depicted as a cunning agent of humor and chaos. Today, some facts about the coyote (Canis latrans):

  • Coyotes will hunt alone or in groups. They are predators, scavengers, and omnivores and will even, sometimes, form unlikely predatory partnerships with other animals.
  • As the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services documents in the above picture, a coyote and badger have teamed up on a prairie in Colorado. The duo can hunt prairie dogs and ground squirrels a lot better when they work in tandem – as the fleet-footed coyote runs down prey and the badger digs hiding animals out of burrows.
  • At least 11 different kinds of coyote vocalizations have been documented. According to the USFWS, “When you hear coyotes howl, you may think that you are hearing many animals. Two can sound like six because of their complex, interruptive, variable vocalizations. Sometimes their hauntingly beautiful songs echo off nearby rock walls, exacerbating the illusion of many animals.”
  • Coyotes form strong pair bonds, with both parents providing food to their young. Other coyotes will also assist in the rearing of young pups, which are born in litters of three to seven between March and May.
  • A staple of legend in many indigenous North American cultures, the coyote is often a trickster hero – variably credited with bringing mankind fire and telling the first lie.

Bucky how come I can't keep a modern day man?

i mean, probably you just need to get better at knot-tying. or invest in some better handcuffs, maybe some more padlocks. generally if you really dont want someone to get away you shoot out their kneecaps, but i dont advise doing any of that because its pretty morally reprehensible

..its just occurred to me that you might be talking about dating. if thats the case i advise communication, respect, and asking for advice from someone who’s dated at all in the last 50 years

16 Nov 19:16

If that's the case, I'm a white leftist who voted Clinton, but I understand the rage. Shocked by a Marxist who was thrilled about Trump, until I realized he believed it would spark the revolution in the USA. Playing with people's lives for kicks.

ThePrettiestOne

I swear I'm only a quarter joking when I blame this attitude on millennials who've read The Hunger Games too many times.

I am so fucking DONE with the (predominantly white) entitled leftists who advance that argument.

A friend of mine articulated it beautifully:

“A Trump presidency is /highly/ unlikely to inspire The People to finally recognize the injustice of our social and economic order and rise up as one to destroy it, etc. Historically speaking, this idea really doesn’t have much or any grounding. The worse things get, the more time and energy and money and social capital and so on people have to expend just to get through a day and protect themselves and their loved ones. They will have even less of a chance to get involved in creating structural change; they will be even more wholly swallowed by urgent personal concerns.

The largest, most significant, most successful protest movements in the US in the 20th century emerged during an era of rising prosperity and financial security and falling income inequality. That’s not a coincidence.

I reject the leftist trope that things need to get worse before they get better. Putting aside the ethical problems with this claim, there just isn’t any evidence for it.”

We’re already see this play out, horrifyingly. Last week, progressive Democrats were saying things like “remember, after we win, we hold ourselves and our candidate accountable; we’ll do better, we’ll make real changes.”

Today, people are talking about surviving without health insurance, without life-saving medication. About surviving deportation and families being torn apart. About violence and jubilant demonstrations from neo-Nazis. About what happens when we lose the last sixty years of hard-won, hard-fought social progress and social safety nets. About labor rights and protections.

We will not have energy to fix our flawed liberalism, because every scrap of energy, power, and influence will instead go towards bare survival.

Last week, we were talking about how much we could change the status quo for the better.

Today, we are desperately reaching for ways to keep the status quo – to keep healthcare, legal protections for LGBTQ folks, reproductive rights.

Last week, the status quo wasn’t good enough. Today, we know we’ll be incredibly fortunate if we can keep it.

That’s what radical leftists don’t want to understand and that’s what they don’t care about because it is never ever EVER their lives and their human rights at stake.

sourcedumal:

sapphicscience:

i’ve been thinking about all those posts about “we need female heroes who do girly things”/”why is the female hero always such a tomboy” and then the response posts that are like “uhhh actually we don’t really have any really masculine female heroes either” so i was trying to figure it out—what do we have, exactly?

and really what we get is women who eschew “girly” things while still managing to look like society’s ideal woman. they would never touch eyeliner (they’re too busy with Important Things), but their eyeliner is immaculate. they have a huge, varied wardrobe, but wouldn’t be caught dead actually shopping for clothes. and it reminds me of the expectation that women must be effortlessly beautiful. don’t wear makeup or you’ll seem self-absorbed—but god forbid you look like you’re not wearing makeup. it’s interesting to me, that the impossibilities imposed on female characters are the same ones imposed on real women.

We got female heroes written by men who don’t see women as actual people and that’s why the disconnect is there.

That’s why so many dudes be like “I want a girl who is all natural” and shit while fawning over women who clearly got a bb cream and bronzer contour with a nude smokey eye.

They love the hourglass figure with skimpy clothes but stand outside the store and do not actually help their women shop for clothing cus “that’s girly bullshit”

And the “masculine” female heroes usually end up being “one of the guys” and not really connecting with other women and its like, really???

Trump has been talking to world leaders—but what has he been saying?

Kellyanne, come get your boy. Bring your ruler, it's time to smack his knuckles.

Another morning, another tweet storm from Auriferous Leader.

TrumpTweet1.jpg

So smoothly. Smooth as buttered silk. Just ask Chris Christie and all the folks who were smoothly sacked from the transition team. But there’s an issue with that second part of Trump’s tweet.

TrumpTweet2.jpg

Uh, huh. Except that the Times piece didn’t say allies weren’t able to reach Trump. It said that Trump was reaching them at unexpected times and without any guidance on what to say.

At times, they have been patched through to him in his luxury office tower with little warning, according to a Western diplomat who spoke on the condition of anonymity to detail private conversations.

Donald Trump's Transition Team Is a Fucking Mess

Somehow it has only been a week since Donald Trump was elected President and it would seem that his transition team is smack dab in the middle of a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

Robert Heinlein's Scifi Classic Stranger in a Strange Land Is Coming to TV

True to its name, the Syfy channel has made a habit of adapting science fiction and fantasy literature both established (Childhood’s End, Hyperion) and contemporary (The Expanse, The Magicians). Now it seems there’s another much-beloved property on the network’s list: Robert Heinlein’s 1961 Stranger in a Strange Land.

White nationalist 'Breitbart News' vows lawsuit against media for calling them white nationalists

by rss@dailykos.com (Hunter)
ThePrettiestOne

PC culture, 2016

The white nationalists at the white nationalist Breitbart "News" website are very put out at the developing media coverage of the actual headlines and articles and odes to the white nationalist "alt-right" that have appeared on their site over the years, and they're not gonna take it no more.

Breitbart News is preparing a lawsuit against a "major media company" over claims that it is a white nationalist website, it said in an exclusive statement to The Hill. [...]

"Breitbart News cannot allow such vicious racial lies to go unchallenged, especially by cynical, politically-motivated competitors seeking to diminish its 42 million monthly readers and its number one in the world political Facebook page. Breitbart News rejects racism in all its varied and ugly forms. Always has, always will," the statement continues.

They do not name the "major media company,” suggesting this little endeavor may not have been fully thought out before their press person decided to burp it out. They also do not appear to realize that the things they have written on their public site are available to the public ... or that the white nationalist-promoting comments their readers post in response are available to the public, as well.

For the record, again, Steve Bannon was quite open about turning the site into a vehicle for the "alt-right,” and the "alt-right" is indeed a white nationalist name for a white nationalist movement, and white nationalists themselves are unambiguous in their belief that the site supports their movement, and ex-Breitbart writers themselves have written that under Bannon, Breitbart openly embraced the white supremacist alt-right.

Mind you, the Breitbart site also peddles in hoaxes (O'Keefe), conspiracy theories (take your pick), anti-Semitism (‘Renegade Jew’), misogyny (take your pick again), and online harassment efforts—but they're not planning to sue people who point those things out. Only the part about them being flag-waving apologists for and promoters of actual self-identified white nationalists.
