Events at Standing Rock on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2017.

Y'all, this is still happening. Please don’t forget about the protectors putting their bodies on the line. Please don’t let them be brutalized by law enforcement. Please stand with Standing Rock. They will need it in the coming weeks and months as inauguration gives way to pro-oil, anti-Native politics.

Remember this is Illegal so the cops are breaking the Law. We were told that the DAPL was not being made anymore and that it would be illegal to do so. It’s why the company was told they would be fined.

Remind people of this the next time they say American police are good and “protect people.”

A Murder On Snow: Criminalist Photographs 1000s Of Crows Roosting Atop Snowy Trees

by Rokas L

snow-tree-birds-portland-police-walker-berg-1

When the Portland Police Bureau isn’t fighting crime, it’s posting awesome photos on the internet. C.S.I. Walker Berg took this shot through a window on the 12th floor of the Justice Center, when he saw thousands of black crows  sitting on a thick blanket of snow atop the trees. The backlight from the city lamps below illuminated the scene and highlighted the contrast between the black birds and the white snow, making the sight even more awesome. Berg picked up a Nikon D700 and snapped this photograph in aperture mode, using f/16. The police department called it “Crows on Snow”, but some commenters thought the C.S.I. could have named it… (puts on sunglasses) “A Murder On Snow”.

P.S. For all of you who may not know, a ‘murder’ can also be a group of crows.

Heartbreaking Video Shows Monkeys Accidentally Killing A Robot Monkey And Then Mourning For It

by Elizabeth

When BBC show ‘Spy In The Wild’ infiltrated a robot monkey among a tribe of Langurs, the fake animal got accidentally ‘killed’. This allowed the hidden camera to capture the intimate details of how the monkeys mourn. The video filmed in Rajasthan, India, both shocked and upset the viewers, as the monkeys’ reaction to death is similar to grief experienced by humans.

The main idea behind the innovative show is putting a camera equipment inside of what looks like an animal in the hope to see the wildlife community from the insider’s perspective. This kind of knowledge can help us understand animals better and to realize that maybe we are not as different from them as we think. Especially, when it comes to monkeys, our closest ‘relatives’, who have friends and enemies, get stressed out, are attached to their mothers, and, as the video shows – go through a mourning process after a loss.

"As a junior intelligence analyst in Iraq, Manning became aware of some of the crimes we were..."

As a junior intelligence analyst in Iraq, Manning became aware of some of the crimes we were committing there and in Afghanistan. His leaks included American troops killing civilians, including women and children, and then calling in an airstrike to destroy evidence; the video of an American Apache helicopter gunship shooting civilians, including two Reuters reporters; American military authorities failing to investigate reports of torture and murder by Iraqi police; and a “black unit” in Afghanistan tasked to perform extrajudicial assassinations of Taliban sympathizers that killed as many as 373 civilians. Manning’s leaks also revealed American surveillance—contrary to the original UN charter—of the UN’s top leadership. He said he made these revelations to “spark a domestic debate on the role of the military and our foreign policy.”

By the time Manning went to trial in 2013 – after being held under despicable conditions for three years – Americans, including the current administration, were well aware that America had made a grievous error by invading Iraq. What Manning revealed was acknowledged to be wrongful acts. One might have expected the military to soft-pedal the case and to let Manning off for time already served, yet the military threw the book at him. They accused him of aiding the enemy, a charge that could had led to death. The judge eventually settled on a lesser charge of violating the highly questionable Espionage Act, and sentenced Manning to a jaw-dropping 35 years.

-

Obama should not have had to commute Chelsea Manning’s sentence

The Stupidsphere is screaming that Chelsea Manning is a traitor, and that people were killed because of the information she revealed. Both of those things are wrong, but the Stupidsphere has created a narrative that’s been around for so long, the actual truth can’t even get past the American flag they’ve wrapped around themselves to make its way into their tiny little brains.

unpretty:

unpretty:

i know that generally when it comes to scarecrow’s fear toxin/gas/whatever the favored interpretation is scary hallucinogen/really bad trip with a lot of “oh no everything is monsters” BUT LIKE personally i think it would be interesting if he just bypasses all of that and skips right to triggering the physiological mechanisms of fear. like if he’s isolated the part of irukandji syndrome that causes feelings of impending doom, or found a drug that kicks the amygdala into high gear to trigger panic attacks (i know that i am oversimplifying this but it’s comic book logic so whatever). so instead of

EVERYTHING LOOKS LIKE MONSTERS TRYING TO KILL ME AND THAT’S TERRIFYING

it’s

I DON’T KNOW WHY I’M SO SURE YOU’RE ALL TRYING TO KILL ME BUT THE WORST PART IS THE ANTICIPATION, MY WHOLE WORLD IS JUMPSCARES NOW

but tbh my reasons are mostly self-indulgent because i would find it hilarious if batman got gassed and then kicked crane’s ass anyway, leaving crane under the impression that batman is immune to fear, but actually batman is just already hypervigilant and prone to catastrophic thinking and has a lot of practice dealing with panic attacks

“Batman doesn’t notice he got fear gassed because he just assumed he was having an episode and ignored it” is my whole Batman aesthetic tbh

Vladimir Putin ordered attempt to influence US election, declassified report says

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin personally directed an attempt to harm Hillary Clinton’s chances of winning the 2016 U.S. presidential election, according to an intelligence report declassified and made public Friday.
  • The report, “Assessing Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent US Elections,” noted that Moscow has for years attempted to meddle in American politics, but 2016 operations “demonstrated a significant escalation in directness, level of activity and scope of effort.” Read more
  • Afterward, Trump said in a statement that cyberattacks had no impact on the integrity of his victory. Read more

just in case you’re like me and prefer sources that aren’t twitter or tabloids

Or just go straight to the source and read the declassified version of the report yourself. It’s not that long:

https://icontherecord.tumblr.com/post/155494946443/odni-statement-on-declassified-intelligence

in a movie, this report would be the happy ending. the corrupt puppet president would never take office, and would probably end up in jail.

in the real world… what happens now? anything? will there be any response to this whatsoever?

edit: note that by refusing to acknowlege this report, trump is burning his bridges with the intelligence community. the cia and homeland security are usually so right-wing as to be proto-fascist in themselves, and he could’ve had them in hand so easily, but instead he’s giving them the cold shoulder in order to avoid offending putin.

this WILL come back to bite him. i’m just afraid it’ll kill a bunch of us first.

Shit like this made such an impression on me as a 10-year-old kid watching.  Xena took up space physically and exhibited power in a way that I had only seen from men, and that blend of masculinity and femininity being displayed together, no problem, was just an epiphany to my Millennial mind.

disease-danger-darkness-silence:

Y’all might remember that I had you guys sending postcards to Gus and Charlie, because Gus was fighting cancer, and losing kind of badly. Gus was 7 years old when he died on September 29th, just prior to what would have been his 8th birthday.

My friend Sasha held her son as he died and then carried him to a hospital, so that at some point in the future no parent will have to deal with this. In his death, Gus may have provided answers to the questions his incredibly rare and deadly form of cancer brings to the table.

Gus was only able to make to almost-but-not-quite 8 years old because of the ACA. He was able to experience things and live as full a life as possible and learn about dinosaurs and go to school (he was diagnosed young, prior to even entering school) and make friends – because of the ACA. His mother and father were only able to afford a service and cremation because his ACA-compliant insurance paid the bulk of the bill. They were only able to continue financially caring for their youngest son Charlie (who just turned 7 years old…yesterday, I think) and keep themselves in food and housing rather than going bankrupt…because of the fucking Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare

With her permission, I have posted this here, because I want people to know exactly how badly Republicans will be screwing children, and their grieving parents, over if they repeal the ACA.

For Gus, who never made it to 8; for Sasha and her husband, who lost their son; for Charlie, who lost his brother –

For all of the other parents and lost children who are and were in the same boat –

We can’t let Republicans do this. We need to step up to the plate. Because they – Sasha and Gus and everyone like them – can’t.

Spread this

I…I love her.

My daughter is beautiful and strong.

her dorsal fin is longer than a full grown adult but I in all my 5'2" glory still wants to protect her

I am, I believe, the reasonable amount of scared of sharks that a smart soft mammal should be, but I definitely just said “whos a big pretty girl” at the screen.

Thank you, tumblr, for reminding me that things I’m afraid of are beautiful too.

So I got curious and look this giant up and found this picture of the diver high fiving her as she passed.  According to the article, not only is Deep Blue big but in the picture she’s super pregnant too.

Texas and Wisconsin offer an exciting preview of a post-Planned Parenthood, STD-filled America

by rss@dailykos.com (Laura Clawson)

Want a look at the near future of a United States in which Republicans have defunded Planned Parenthood? Texas and Wisconsin have already done just that, barring Planned Parenthood from accepting Medicaid patients. The end result is not that women are getting their health care from 100 percent abortion-free providers, it’s that women are not getting the health care they need

In Texas, Mike Austin, the head of a community health organization that provides similar services to a Planned Parenthood that shut down, says “I hate to say it, but I think an awful lot of women just opted to go without care.” And he should know. Before it closed, the local Planned Parenthood sent Austin’s organization its patient records, to help people make the transition easily.

But to Austin’s dismay, only about 100 former Planned Parenthood patients ever showed up at his door.

“We are seeing a subsequent rise in STDs and a subsequent rise in unplanned pregnancies,” Austin said. He believes they could be linked. “And I’m sitting here going, ‘See? I told you so. This is what happens.’”

It’s not just Texas:

Shawano County, Wisconsin, which is experiencing a flare-up in gonorrhea and which the state government recently designated a hot-spot for new chlamydia infections, is still feeling the pressure. After the Planned Parenthood there closed, former patients faced significant waiting lists to see a doctor at local community health clinics. The health department didn’t know where to send women for certain services.

“The clinic that closed in Shawano served the whole county,” said Jaime Bodden, the Shawano County health director. Not just women on Medicaid, she said, but women with stingy insurance and women with no insurance at all. Now, the county health department is virtually on its own as it combats the region’s rising STI rates.

“It’s something that we still often talk about,” she said. “We say, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to have Planned Parenthood in town?’”

If and when Paul Ryan and the rest of them get their way, there are going to be a whole lot more places where health professionals (and, heaven knows, patients) look around at STD rates and unplanned pregnancy rates and say “Wouldn’t it be nice to have Planned Parenthood in town?”

"But have you ever, anywhere (other than Free Speech TV), seen a TV conversation about the role the..."

But have you ever, anywhere (other than Free Speech TV), seen a TV conversation about the role the media itself played in getting Trump elected, and why they did it?

The numbers are easy to find online Trump got between $2 and $3 billion in free media coverage, while Hillary struggled to break into the evening news, and Bernie Sanders was largely ignored until the final months of the Democratic primary.

And it’s not a secret: Les Moonves, the executive chairman and CEO of CBS, said, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter about Trump’s candidacy: “It may not be good for America, but it’s damn good for CBS.” He added: “Donald’s place in this election is a good thing… . Man, who would have expected the ride we’re all having right now? … The money’s rolling in and this is fun… . I’ve never seen anything like this, and this going to be a very good year for us. Sorry. It’s a terrible thing to say. But, bring it on, Donald. Keep going.”

The networks — whose first priority since Reagan killed the Fairness Doctrine is profitability rather than informing the public — are no doubt salivating about the next 4 years of daily eruptions from the White House. They’re clearly betting The Donald Trump Reality Show: POTUS Version will provide an ongoing revenue stream, whereas a Hillary presidency would merely have been competent and boring, and thus not as profitable for the media.
