i can no longer take any description of a male protagonist seriously if the writer describes him as ‘brooding’

because i used to think ‘oh, that’s sexy and mysterious, etc’

and now i think of this

once you’ve been loudly cussed out by 2.5 lbs of feathers, that word only ever means one thing

This is the kinda brooding i WANNA see

#so this behavior basically translates to nonstop cuddling of offspring and vocal aggression towards anything that tries to prevent that #tbh i would be delighted to see male protagonists do just this sort of thing (via starfoozle)

I just had to explain what I was cackling at to my roommate. It automatically passes the Laugh Rule.

She found her reluctant fiance, Erstad, brooding out on the rainy moors.

“Is that a baby rabbit?” she asked, observing his huddled form.

“IT’S SIX BABY RABBITS AND YOU CAN’T TOUCH THEM,” replied Ernstad, contriving to look twice his usual size and at least three times his usual fierceness.

“Whoah okay damn,” she said, and backed away.

That’s actually how it works.

Crows: smart enough to not only remember but convey to their buddies which humans were nice to them that one time and which were jerks, but dumb enough to get their heads stuck in fences, apparently.

There are humans who manage to get their dicks stuck in toasters I really don’t think we get to judge

Why You Should Read the American Gods Novel Before Watching the TV Show

by Evan Narcisse
ThePrettiestOne

Because it's good?
Also, I personally recommend reading the Sandman books, since they sit sidewise to American Gods

Months ago, I waffled over whether to re-read American Gods before the TV show started airing. Did I want to experience the show as its own unique thing or should I go back to the book and reacquaint myself with the plot? The decision to go back to Neil Gaiman’s modern fantasy epic won out and I feel like I made the…

Sally Yates to finally deliver public testimony about the Trump-Russia connection on May 8

by rss@dailykos.com (Mark Sumner)
ThePrettiestOne

This almost needs a drinking game.

Sally Yates was originally scheduled to appear before the House Intelligence Committee in a public hearing over a month ago. It was to be the committee’s second such hearing, following the one in which FBI Director James Comey rocked Republican expectations by revealing that, yes indeed, there was an active, ongoing investigation into Trump’s Russia connections within the FBI.

At the time, rumors swirled around Yates’ possible testimony, which was said to contain some hard to ignore information on how the White House had kept then National Security Advisor Michael Flynn in place despite repeated warnings from Yates. There were even suggestions that the hearing might be cancelled, specifically to keep Yates from making a public disclosure about what she knew.

Interesting—Jeremy Bash implies Sally Yates had revelations for House Intel about when she told WH that Flynn lied. Nunes nixed the hearing.

Then committee chair Devin Nunes did his from-the-White House, to-the-White House briefing and series of press conferences and, what do you know, the hearing where Yates was scheduled to testify really was cancelled, along with every other hearing before the committee.

But Sally Yates is going to make that public appearance last, on the other end of Capitol Hill.

Former acting attorney general Sally Yates is scheduled to appear at a congressional hearing next month on Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, a Senate committee announced Tuesday.

Yates is to appear May 8 along with James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence, at an open hearing of the crime and terrorism subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

So while Yates may have moved from the House to the Senate, it seems we’ll finally get a chance to hear if what she has to say was reason enough for the actions taken by the White House and Devin Nunes.

My mom said that today in church her pastor said in the sermon that Jesus told us to help the poor, and taking money away from public schools to give to charter schools only widens the gap between the rich and the poor.  She then added that Jesus spoke against adultery and lust and would not have approved of bragging about sexually assaulting women.  According to my mom, people got up and walked out.

The pastor also started the sermon by noting that she’d heard of another minister who read the entirety of the Sermon on the Mount at the pulpit, to be told by the so-called Christian parishioners after the service that it was offensive and they didn’t agree.

The Sermon on the Mount is straight up the words of Jesus.

I recently read an article that said, hypocritical Christians in America don’t actually worship Jesus. They worship America, and even then, it’s a very specific, self-centered idea of America.

YES.  EXACTLY.

My mom’s church talks almost every Sunday about how Christians are called to welcome strangers and foreigners and does tons of stuff to help refugees because HELLO, IT’S RIGHT THERE. IN THE RED TEXT, NO LESS.

I don’t believe everything they believe, but I REALLY like those people.

What a lot of these people are is idolators.

Not in terms of the realness or unrealness of who they worship, but in terms of how they’ve warped their focus away from the reality and turned it towards a fantasy of their own construction.

By definition, an idol is an image with no god behind it.

What they have done is taken the idea of Jesus and created a false image of him, nothing like the reality, to carry around in their back pocket, or to wave around on signs, and pull out and shove in people’s faces to justify all manner of unChristlike behavior.

It is a “worship” that is fundamentally self-centered rather than deity-centered, wherein the deity in question is more of a pocketbook get-out-of-jail-free card than directive to live by, and more of a status symbol than a guiding light.

That people will, without a shred of self-awareness, rest themselves assured that Jesus would want them to tip their waitress with a Jesus pamphlet made to look like folded-up money (to take only one example out of many) is the ultimate dismissal of everything the original stood for.

There is a line in the Bible about Jesus meeting his false worshipers and saying “I do not know you.” It seems like plenty of so-called Christians have beaten him to the punch with how quick they are to say they don’t know him.

A lot of churches and organizations in America that call themselves Christian churches are in fact Christianist cults.  They no more represent Christianity than Daesh represents Islam.  In addition to the usual nonsense of so-called Christians being pro-war, anti-immigrant, racist, and so forth, there are a lot of sects/movements that are just completely toxic and not Christian at all, even though they use that label.  If you are Christian and want to have some fucking nightmares, google “christian dominionist,” or “prosperity gospel.”

Somebody said Humans would be the Mad Scientist species to aliens- like, aliens watch Back To The Future, and they see Doc Brown, and they think yes this is a human scientist, they’re all that crazy, these humans do such insane things with science.

I would like to offer an alternative.

Humans are tough. We can shrug off plenty of injuries, and we recover pretty fast from most others. Hell, we find minor injuries amusing (Don’t tell me you’ve never laughed at someone getting hit in the balls).

Humans have a skewed sense of danger. We think baby anything is cute- tigers, lions, alligators, whatever, no matter how scary they grow up to be- and even then there’s people that would happily cuddle up to a grizzly. Even less adventurous humans keep vermin as pets, or snakes, or dogs, that apex predator sub-species we made.

We are fascinated by morbid and scary stuff. We have a whole genre designed to terrify people. Tons of fantasy revolves around deadly monsters, plenty of which involve romance with said monsters. Lots of grim dystopias in sci-fi. Even children’s stories involve grandmothers getting eaten or witches getting cooked in their own oven.

And if you’re on this site, you know all the jokes we make about depression or social anxiety, or joking about wanting to die.

We aren’t the Doc Brown species.

We’re the Addams Family Species.

…ACCURATE.

Watch This Stabby Robot Play the Knife Game With a Human Hand

by Andrew Liszewski on Sploid, shared by Rob Bricken to io9
ThePrettiestOne

this boring. I want to see Simone Giertz's version.

We’ve all seen footage of giant factory robots hoisting and placing heavy parts with perfect precision, so it should come as no surprise that a robot arm can adeptly play the knife game without lopping off someone’s finger. But even with that in mind, you’ll still be stressed watching this stabby robot in action.

DRAGONS

I feel so stupid I didn’t know they could fly, I thought they were like CHICKENS, I never questioned it because these pictures never circulate, I am WAY OVER MY HEAD.

Das a phoenix not a dragon. Obviously.

Birds like peacocks may be the real-world inspiration for mythological creatures. Here’s a silent, slo-mo clip of one flying down from a roof. If you’d never seen a peacock before, and your first encounter was one flying across a clearing with the sun behind it and nothing for scale, thinking it was a phoenix or firebird or dragon would make sense.

I read something a long time back suggesting the noise made by mute swans in flight was a similar basis for myth, because it does NOT sound like wings beating.

Watch and listen to a brief solo overflight here. as one swan takes off to avoid another’s aggressive territorial behaviour.

(@dduane and I call its neck-back wings-up posture with bow wave “The Trireme”. NB - If a swan heads for you looking like that, leave. Quickly.)

Here’s the sound of five mute swans flying together (found on the website Xeno-Canto, bird calls from all over the world).

Again, these are wingbeats, not voices. If you heard that sound at dawn or dusk 1000 years ago, what story would you tell about it - the Children of Lir mourning their lost humanity, perhaps?
