"I looked at my hand and my little finger was gone – the bone was sticking out. It’s the weirdest feeling; one second you’re fine and your little finger is there, and the next second it’s gone. It shoves reality up your backside. I was in so much pain and shock that the first thing that hit my head was the beat and the bass. The bass was hard, so I just ripped off my top, wrapped it around my finger and tied it up as tight as I could and skanked it out for half an hour. My mentality was, ‘I’ve only been here for an hour, I’ve paid £10 for this night, I’ve lost my little finger – am I seriously going to go? Nah, I’m going to skank until I can’t skank any more.’ After that, my mate dragged me down to the paramedics."

Friends later told him that a “bunch of stoners found [his] little finger and were playing catch with it.”

Slow-Mo Video Takes Viral ‘Pucker’ Photos of Babies Tasting Lemons to Another Level

by DL Cade

If you don’t remember the photo series Pucker, then you might have been hiding under a rock last August because it exploded. An adorable series by photographers April Maciborka and David Wile, the photos featured babies trying lemons for the first time and reacting with everything from glee, to horror, to cute versions of the scrunched up faces most of us would make.

The series went viral — even just on PetaPixel it attracted some 6.2 thousand shares — but Maciborka and Wile weren’t done yet. Today, they took Pucker into the realm of slow-motion video.

There’s no need to describe what you’re about to see, given that you could just click play, so instead we’re going to re-share a few of the images from the stills series so that those of you who missed it the first time around can enjoy it again:

When Maciborka got in touch with us to share the video earlier today, we shot a few questions her way about what inspired her to go slow motion and asked her to share any challenges she encountered along the way. Here’s what she had to say:

After the craze online and in publications worldwide with the still series of “Pucker” we decided that we should make a follow-up video. Slow motion made sense as it would be even funnier to see morphed baby faces reacting to a sour taste… at 300 frames per second with the Scarlett camera you could catch moments that you would never even see with the naked eye — like the snot coming out of one babies nose, or the lip quiver on the other baby.

Brought to You By Inc. helped us with the post-production, which was something Dave and I do not usually do. Sasha, the cinematographer, collaborated with his excellent expertise in shooting with the Scarlett Camera. Together, we shot about 15 babies per day on a weekend. We sat down with Brought to You by Inc. and selected our favorite reactions and shared our visions. All in all, we were very pleased with how they saw our vision and made it a reality.

We haven’t faced many challenges on this job. In fact, the more heads, the better. We were able to shoot straight through babies reactions which is easier than getting that perfect still shot. We never thought we would share the moments with parents in the frame or arms or tears, but once we found a song, it all made sense to make it dramatic and have a somewhat explosive ending. Showing the decline of the lemon just seemed to make sense. The innocent baby accepting of all things and then deciding after its sour taste that it is worthless and terrible! How cute, how dramatic, how awesome!

Awesome indeed. If you’d like to see more photos from the Pucker series, be sure to check out our previous coverage. And for more from Maciborka or Wile, you can visit their websites by clicking here or here, respectively.

Cookbooks: Power Hungry

by Marisa

Power Hungry cover - Food in Jars

These days, my brain is entirely occupied by thoughts of my upcoming book tour. Next Friday, I head to Boston for a weekend of demos and book signings at the Eat Boutique Pop-Up Market. Soon after that, I’m road tripping my way through Charlottesville, Asheville, Atlanta, Birmingham, and Memphis.

I have page after page of to-do lists in my notebook, covering topics like demo supplies, book sourcing, day-to-day logistics, and even road snacks (because while I’ll have a back seat full of pickles and jam, preserves do not a filling meal make).

Power Hungry title spread - Food in Jars

Happily, thanks to Camille V. Saulsbury and her book Power Hungry my car snacks are in good hands. Released last fall, this book features recipes for granola bars, energy balls, and super healthy brownies that are the perfect thing to reach for when you’re driving from one state to another.

The book opens with an introduction to the pantry staples used in the recipes. From there Camilla moves into the section she calls “Super Natural Knock Offs.” If you have a favorite store bought bar, look here first, because chances are good that you’ll find a recipe that will get you something perfectly similar here.

Power Hungry Friend Bars - Food in Jars

From there, you move through chapters for Activity Bars (these are original recipes that are bursting with flavor to get you through a workout or a busy day), Endurance Bars (these are higher in protein and fat, for even more energy), Protein Bars (they get their protein from beans, or from whey or vegan protein powders), and Raw and Almost Raw Bars (these are the easiest bars in the book, because you just combine ingredients and pack them into shape).

So far, my favorite recipe in the book is the one for Friend Bars. They’re Camilla’s version of Kind Bars and the coconut almond variation has helped me kick my habit of picking up three or four at Trader Joe’s each time I grocery shop.

Power Hungry back - Food in Jars

This week, one of the things on the ever-lengthening to-do list is to make a couple batches of these bars, wrap them individually and stash them in the freezer. I’ll grab a few for next weekend’s trip and even more when I head south.

I’m so looking forward to the fact that I won’t be dependent on expensive store bought bars for all this upcoming travel. What’s more, there’s really nothing better than having something homemade when I’m on the road. It becomes an edible touchstone for home and the life I’m so happy to lead.

Anti-Piracy Group Accused of Stealing the Photo They Used in an Anti-Piracy Ad

by DL Cade

potofgold1

Well this is awkward… We’re all for people advocating for copyright law and making sure that people at least understand that it’s bad to steal other people’s intellectual property, but if you’re going to do it, you might want to follow your own rules.

Case in point: Anti-piracy group The Business Software Alliance was called out this weekend for allegedly using a stolen photo in an anti-piracy ad that encouraged people to turn in unlicensed software users.

The ad in question (which you can see above) reads: “Your pot of gold is right here baby. Report unlicensed software and GET PAID.” Problem is, the pot of gold picture they used to illustrate the ad is actually a picture of a delicious St. Patrick’s Day cake baked by Cakecentral user Bethasd.

potofgold2

When this was pointed out to the BSA, they declined to comment and immediately pulled the photo down, pretty much confessing by omission that they were in the wrong.

Now they’re in the awkward situation that might have them paying out their own pot of gold to user Bethasd, who is being encouraged by many to ask for both licensing fees and damages for the unauthorized use.

RARP: RAVE ACTION ROLE PLAY - THE NEW RAVE TREND Behind the RAVE

by Maria Mouk
Tiago Lessa

geekaria pesada.

RARPing is a fresh and somewhat secretive new rave form that involves costuming, hidden identities, and random missions while being an off-shoot of LARPing (live action role playing.) Those we interviewed about the subject were not very forthcoming, fearing they would be ousted by their RARP community. Read on to find out more.

The History of LARP
Live Action Role Playing, more commonly known as “LARPing,” is a free form of (mostly) unscripted role-playing (or live acting) that ranges from the purely theatrical through to combative, political or historical. Dozens or hundreds of characters meet in a decided location to freestyle through a framework of accepted scenarios, and live out an abstraction of their appointed avatar, whether it be magician, warrior, or other deviation from their everyday self. Gaining most of it’s momentum across the globe in the 70s with the invent of tabletop role-playing games. LARP identities or genres have since included science fiction, historical recreations, dystopian or zombie apocalypses, and even gender reconstruction scenarios.

Shortcut-S: A Photoshop Dedicated Keyboard Promises to Speed Up Workflow

by Hanssie
Tiago Lessa

is this real life? falta totil para dia 1 de abril.

Shortcuts. When 3 weddings, 5 portrait sessions and 4 album designs are staring you down, a shortcut is a lifeline to making sure that you are not enslaved to your computer and maybe have a chance to see the outside world at least for a few minutes.

I have nary to find many photographers who loves the editing part of the job. In fact, for me personally, I’d rather endure a roomful of crying toddlers or face an army of fire ants than sit in front of my laptop with Lightroom or Photoshop and hours of editing ahead. Sure, Photoshop has lots of shortcuts, but I have to remember all these shortcuts and the older I get, the less my brain holds information like remembering what Command+Shift+N does for me.

[REWIND: Example of Culling-In Workflow in Lightroom]

So, when a Kickstarter project has told me that I can speed up my workflow by 30%, my ears perk up. The Shortcut-S Keyboard is a keyboard specifically for editing in Photoshop. Grouped by color, the Shortcut-S keyboard looks intuitive and easy to navigate.

ShortcutS-kickstarter-1Creator Sorin Neica has promised that if the project is funded, that they will develop more overlays for popular programs such as Corel Draw, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Illustrator, Final Cut, Lightroom, etc. You can vote now on their website for the graphics program you want them to develop next.

[PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT: To speed up your Lightroom workflow check out our Lightroom Organization and Workflow Workshop v5]

Shortcut-S is truly a shortcut, allowing me to use one finger (not three keys with one hand and the mouse with the other), and press any of the 319 keys for the most important tools, functions, and filters. There are also 20 customizable keys.

shortcuts-kickstarter-3

Here is their Kickstarter video below for more information:

They have 48 days to raise $185, 280 to reach their goal and begin production on this project, so if you think that this would help you speed up your editing time, check out their Kickstarter page.

Vegetarian Mushroom Hot And Sour Soup

by Phoebe Lapine

I gained a lot of culinary influence from my college friend Salima, but no dish more so than hot and sour soup. vegetarian hot and sour soup in a bowl

Her influence did not necessarily come by way of the kitchen, as I’m pretty sure the only thing she attempted to cook while we were living under the same roof was pancakes. They were never attempted during daylight hours and always resulted in batter on the walls and the faint smell of something burning that stuck with us for the week that followed. But she did have excellent (if eccentric) taste in the food she wasn’t making.

Under Salima’s tutelage, I tried escargot for the first time, which she gingerly doused in butter and arranged on toast for my sampling. I also learned to start ordering my steak rare versus medium (what was I thinking?!?). But the most ubiquitous dish in Salima’s diet was hot and sour soup.cremini and shitake mushrooms on a boardvegetarian hot and sour soup in a pot

I’ve seen Salima eat hot and sour soup as early as 8am. I’ve seen her eat it in at least 5 different countries, including Italy, where I had no idea you could even find hot and sour soup. It was her cure all comfort food. And most of the times that required curing and comforting, were the times of extreme hangover. If Salima was in a bad state, we all knew to run down the block to Shanghai, the local Chinese restaurant, and come back with a quart container of hot and sour soup to-go.

I’ve never had a problem with eating savory foods for breakfast. Before I was gluten-free, weekend dim sum was a hangover tradition. But I had always been more of a miso soup kind of gal before Salima came into my life.

vegetarian hot and sour soup in a bowl

Maybe it was some wacked out college kid’s placebo effect, but soon all of my housemates and I started adopting Salima’s cure all. And it’s remained a brunch time tradition to this day when we all get together.

The times that I’m at my weakest and most cranky are not really the times I want to be cooking. So perhaps that’s why this hot and sour soup recipe has taken so long to materialize in my kitchen. It’s really easy to make, and has the added benefit of being gluten-free. Luckily, as I discovered last week, when I’m in good health and spirits hot and sour still tastes delicious, and doesn’t remind me of the times I’ve woken up with my pillow covered in eye makeup.

The official start of Chinese New Year was last weekend. It’s officially the year of the Rat. I have no idea what that means. But I feel like hot and sour soup is probably the right thing to cure all that comes with it.

with health and hedonism,

Phoebe

Mushroom Hot And Sour Soup

This delicious vegetarian, gluten-free spin on classic Chinese hot and sour soup will keep you warm in winter and satiated through lighter months.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes
Servings 4

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon refined coconut oil
  • 1 small shallot, sliced
  • 1 bunch scallions, thinly sliced, white and green parts divided
  • 1 pound mixed mushrooms, I used shitake and cremini, stems removed, thinly sliced
  • 1 inch fresh ginger, peeled and minced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 teaspoons sambal olek or sriracha
  • 1/4 cup gluten-free tamari
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 6 cups vegetable stock
  • 2 tablespoons arrowroot starch or cornstarch
  • 1 large egg, beaten

Instructions

  • Heat the oil in a large stockpot or Dutch oven. Saute the shallot and white scallions over medium-high heat until soft, 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook until they've reduced in size and begun releasing their liquid, 5 minutes. Stir in the ginger, garlic, and sambal olek or sriracha. Cook until fragrant, 1 more minute.
  • Carefully pour in the tamari and vinegar (hot vinegar can sting the eyes), scrapping up any brown bits that have formed on the bottom of the pan. Add the stock and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 10 minutes until the flavors have melded. In a small mixing bowl, whisk the arrowroot or cornstarch and 1/3 cup of water to create a slurry. Add it to the pot and simmer the soup until slightly thickened, another 10 minutes.
  • Remove the soup from the heat and slowly pour in the egg while stirring the liquid. The egg will form soft strings and will cook immediately. Taste the soup and add salt as necessary. Garnish with the green scallions and serve.
