Golden and gleaming, this convex mirror arrived last week at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., where it will be mounted on the much-anticipated Webb telescope. When the telescope is up and running, sometime later this decade, the Webb will take the title of the most powerful space telescope ever built, ousting even the Hubble. The Boulder-built mirror’s color comes from a microscopic layer of gold, 1,000 times thinner than a human hair. The gold will help the telescope better reflect infrared light, making distant planets and the universe’s first galaxies easier to see.

Com a vitória de Brack Obama sobre as forças do mal representadas por Mitt Romney o mundo foi salvo, o aquecimento global acabou, gays e cabras podem se casar livremente e a economia americana voltou a crescer. Dizem até que Obama vai finalmente cumprir as promessas de campanha do 1o Mandato.

Junto com essa onda de otimismo veio a história de que a NASA voltaria a seus tempos áureos, e culminando tudo, estabeleceria uma nova presença na Lua.

Aos poucos a história foi crescendo, e agora vários sites falam de uma “Base Lunar”.

Infelizmente não é assim que a banda toca.

A verdade é que a tecnologia para estabelecer uma base lunar não existe. Não que seja inalcançável, só depende de dinheiro, dinheiro que não existe. A proposta real é bem mais modesta, envolve a criação de uma estação espacial.

Menos.

A proposta é criar um habitat para uma tripulação de 3 ou 4 astronautas, acoplada a uma cápsula Orion, que só começará a voar em testes não-tripulados em 2014. Esse habitat seria uma base para avaliar a permanência a longo prazo de humanos no espaço, e seria colocada no ponto Lagrange 2.

Os pontos Lagrange foram calculados em 1771 por um cidadão de nome (surpresa) Lagrange. São 5 posições entre dois corpos em órbita mútua nas quais um terceiro corpo permaneceria “estático”, com as forças gravitacionais se anulando. Imagine um satélite geoestacionário, com a rotação equivalendo a 24h, mas aplicado a 3 corpos.

São o melhor ponto para uma estação espacial, economizando propelente para correções de órbita.

O ponto que nos interessa é o L2, situado a 60 mil quilômetros da Lua:

Será a maior distância que humanos já estiveram de seu planeta Natal, demandará muita tecnologia, sistemas redundantes a rodo e acima de tudo coragem, pois se algo der errado NADA poderá ser feito pra ajudar esses caras, mas é um posto avançado, não uma Base Lunar.

A mídia é implacável, e o público hoje anda MUITO chato. Quando a NASA transmitiu ao vivo o incrível pouso da Curiosity, assim que o robô transmitiu os primeiros thumbnails para indicar que tudo havia corrido bem, milhares e milhares de idiotas começaram a xingar muito no Twitter, explicações de que aquelas primeiras imagens eram minúsculas propositalmente eram afogadas em um mar de recalque e frustração.

Exploração espacial se dá a passos lentos, o caminho mais certo para o desastre é apressar os cronogramas. Que o diga o desastre da Apollo I. Uma base lunar seria ótimo, uma viagem a Marte mais ainda, mas é preferível que isso seja feito quando houver segurança. Segurança essa que será conquistada com o aprendizado em missões como esse Posto Avançado, que não é nada não é nada, é muito mais distante do que o que temos hoje, quando os humanos mais distantes da Terra estão a uma distância menor do que Rio-São Paulo.

Long time, no see! But here are some fascinating sea discoveries to kind of make up for some months without blog updates.

First are the mysterious circles discovered by Japanese diver Yoji Ootaka in 2007. In Japan, crop circles are more commonly known as “mystery circles”, and these were genuinely mysterious ones! Made in regular patterns on soft sand, they would not last for very long, and for years Ootaka recorded them and asked in his blog if anyone else had seen them, and who or what could be behind them? Turns out nobody had seen those circles before, but the mystery would not last very long.

This year a team of marine scientists with the public TV station NHK program “Darwin has come!” found and recorded the culprit in gorgeous images. And the artist was a little blowfish!

Working hard for up to six days to create these symmetrical constructions almost a couple of meters in diameter! What for? Well, as Jerry Coyne put it, “if you’re an evolutionary biologist, you might have guessed: sexual selection. A male sculpts this thing to attract females for mating”. In experiments the Japanese scientists determined the more grooves the pattern has, the greater the chance to attracts females. Because at the center of the pattern, there is the artist!

In the first posts about his discovery, Ootaka did mention he found small puffer fishes inside the circles, but they had to record the little fish actually creating the huge pattern to believe it. The pattern is not only aesthetic: the grooves and ridges help neutralize sea floor currents, further protecting the eggs.

Crop circles are still made by humans, but mating hedgehogs may not sound so absurd after all.

Sponge Reception

At ten thousand feet below the ocean’s surface, scientists discovered yet another amazing creature: the harp sponge (Chondrocladia lyra).

“C. lyra is called the harp sponge because its basic structure, called a vane, is shaped like a harp or lyre. Each vane consists of a horizontal branch supporting several parallel, vertical branches. But don’t let the harp sponge’s whimsical appearance and innocent sounding name fool you, it’s actually a deep-sea predator.

Clinging with root-like "rhizoids" to the soft, muddy sediment, the harp sponge captures tiny animals that are swept into its branches by deep-sea currents. Typically, sponges feed by straining bacteria and bits of organic material from the seawater they filter through their bodies. However, carnivorous harp sponges snare their prey—tiny crustaceans—with barbed hooks that cover the sponge’s branching limbs. Once the harp sponge has its prey in its clutches, it envelops the animal in a thin membrane, and then slowly begins to digest it.”

The regularity of the sponge, which makes it look almost artificial, may have Forteans remembering the case of the “Eltanin Antenna”, a famous photo captured in 1964 of what looked like a man (or perhaps alien) made artifact at almost four kilometer deep at sea. In 2003 Tom DeMary did the basic research that no UFO buff had done until then and contacting the original researchers found out they had already identified the image as that of another carnivorous sponge, C. concrescens.

Moving Lilies

And last, here’s one which I first thought was the creation of some horror movie, but as you may guess, is actually a very real and yet completely natural creature. Here is Neocrinus decorus:

It’s a crinoid, a sea lily usually attached at the bottom of the sea by its long stalk, and yet in the video we can see that when needed it can move, and actually quite fast. Scientists didn’t think it could move that fast – though, before you start running to the hills, one must remember the distance between the right-most and left-most red laser dots is only 2 cm. That is, this is a pretty small harmless sea lily.

Creepy as hell, granted, I much prefer the puffer fish, but they are all amazing discoveries which fortunately have not been mystified with cheap fantasies. With the exception of that sponge antenna of 1964, of course.

Virou “clichê do clichê” atribuir um poder quase místico – revolucionário e democrático – às redes sociais, especialmente as mais vistosas como Facebook e Twitter. O processo de celebrização de personalidades virtuais tem despejado, dia após dia, comunidades e páginas a serviço de determinadas causas e ideias. Simulacro de jornalismo, tais comunidades em geral orientam-se por alguma noção de “verdade” e suposto interesse público, mas trazem no seu DNA um paroxismo fatal: podem se converter, da noite para o dia, numa vertente para o fascismo.

Vamos refletir sobre um caso concreto: a comunidade “Diário de Classe”, página de Isadora Faber, 13 anos, estudante da Escola Municipal Maria Tomázia Coelho, no Santinho, Florianópolis. A comunidade foi criada em 11/07/2012 e no final de setembro chegou à casa dos 7 milhões de visitantes; outras 344,7 mil pessoas haviam “curtido” (até 23/10) e interagido, de algum modo, com os propósitos da página.

Com início neste mês, o Winter Illumination é um espetáculo de luzes instalado no Jardim Botânico Nabana no Sato, em Kuwana – Nagashima.

A estrela do show é a caminhada no túnel de luzes, que envolve completamente os espectadores, como se estivessem entrando em um portal mágico.

O tema deste ano é Natureza e promete cenas belíssimas como, por exemplo, o nascer do Sol no Monte Fuji, arco-íris e a formação de aurora boreal.

Art installation fixed outside a gallery’s wall, displaying natural flow and turbulence of the wind - via dezeen:

Hundreds of spinning blades reveal the invisible patterns of the wind in American artist Charles Sowers’ kinetic installation on the facade of the Randall Museum in San Francisco.

The installation, titled Windswept, consists of 612 rotating aluminium weather vanes mounted on an outside wall. As gusts of wind hit the wall, the aluminium blades spin not as one but independently, indicating the localised flow of the wind and the way it interacts with the building.

“Our ordinary experience of wind is as a solitary sample point of a very large invisible phenomenon,” said Sowers. “Windswept is a kind of large sensor array that samples the wind at its point of interaction with the Randall Museum building and reveals the complexity and structure of that interaction.”

Astronomers have now discovered over 1,000 planets orbiting other stars, and right now these exoplanets all have boring, license-plate-like names, such as HD85512 and GJ 436 instead of endearing, “real” planet names that might offer hints of what that world could be like. And recall the recent extrapolation of how many habitable planets might be in the Milky Way? A team using the ESO’s HARP’s spectrograph determined there might be upwards of 160 billion worlds out there for us to find, and perhaps eventually name. How might we come up with that many names?

Uwingu, a startup company that is hoping to use innovative ways to fund space and astronomy research, has an idea of how to do that. Their first commercial project is to challenge people to create a ‘baby book of planet names’ for all these planets, as suggestions for future names for other worlds.
