In 2012, Busted Knuckle Films and a group of off-road enthusiasts took to the hills at Morris Mountain ORV Park during an RBD event in Heflin, Alabama for some Extreme Barbie Jeep Racing, a dangerous downhill challenge in plastic toy vehicles. To compete in the race, you must “take a power-wheels vehicle, break off the drive gear, go to a steep hill, climb aboard and watch the madness unfold.” You can read more about the race online.
Nothing is more hardcore than riding a plastic kids toy down a steep race course at breakneck speeds. Plastic will break, egos will be bruised. Who will come out on top?

As reported by the Times earlier this month, new legislation in California could make that state the first to legally guarantee the rights of transgender high school athletes. California has already joined a group of more than half a dozen states with school policies that allow transgender athletes to choose whether to play sports with males or females. The above map shows these states, according to information provided by the Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network (GLSEN).
At Moebius’ funeral/memorial. :(
Darrow had this to say about the late great master: “Je lui dois tout”, “I owe him everything.”
Seeing all these great minds together in one place is amazing, too bad it’s for a such a sad occasion.
Darrow is 2nd from Right side, Tanino Liberatore on far right, Milo Manara in middle.

Akira Production Report
Documentary from 1994 about the animated film, with lots of production footage(closeups of backgrounds being painted HELLO), interviews, and super awkward dubbing/narration. Some great stuff in this, including a part where Otomo defends against accusations of drawing “plain” looking girls rather than super cute ones(followed by a weird moment where the narrator sort of makes light of the scene where Kaori gets sexually assaulted by the clowns).
mikeshearulesi wanna get serious about the comics game later in life, i feel like most people burn out before they get cool and weird.
Best read.

"Almost everything you post on this blog is so terrible and depressing!"
Yes, I know. It’s a message I often receive on here. So, in order to combat the overwhelming sadness you all feel today from not winning the lottery or the news that Yahoo is probably buying Tumblr for $1.1 Billion (around double that of the $590+ million Powerball jackpot ONE PERSON from Florida won last night), I have put this silly little post together.
Here are a few actual kind-hearted people who would like to give $1 million to each and every person in America but are unfortunately not all that good at math.
If this all looks familiar, that’s because others were saying the exact same thing last time there was a large Powerball jackpot.
Here’s to investing in our education system!
mikeshearulesHOW TO ART
Here is a master at work Kenichi Sonoda doing a step by step tutorial in the How to Art section of the 12/1989 of Newtype. There is also a set of art book reviews down below the tutorial.
Floating high above the sky Patricia Piccinini’s Skywhale hot air balloon is a thing of wonder. Commissioned by The Centenary Of Canberra the massive flying sculpture that is a cross between a turtle, breasts and prehistoric fish will be making the rounds in Australia during 2013.
Here’s what creative director of the COC had to say about this project:
“Observing Canberra’s continuing love of the spectacle of hot air balloons , each autumn gracing the airspace over the national capital, I wanted to offer this highly visible ‘canvas’ to an Australian artist as a Centenary of Canberra commission. Patricia Piccinini is one of Australia’s most successful ‘sculptors’, her work seen in major collections in Australia, and a survey show broke all attendance records for the Tasmanian Museum and Gallery: she has had recent exhibitions in Nashville, Istanbul and London. Her highly imaginative work invites us every time to think about the human condition, and it was this relationship with the very concept of ‘life on Earth’ that made me think of her. Many special shape balloons have started to replicate characters or animals, but they are mostly caricatures and in the realm of kitsch, rather than art.
To my delight, Patricia was immediately responsive to the idea of her work in a new form, and insisted that it would not be a novelty, but a continuation of her ouevre and its years of investigation into the way life has evolved. This is exactly what the new work is, and we are so proud to have been able to find the resources to help this great artist make it happen. That Patricia was educated in Canberra, also makes this a celebration of the fine talent that the national capital has, and continues to produce.” (via)
Watch three fantastic videos with the artist in her studio as well as footage of the Skywhale in flight after the jump!
