Beautiful Oil Paintings of Grotesque Creatures by Christian Rex van Minnen
mikeshearulesone day i will learn to oil paint.
Renaissance paintings on LSD. That’s the best possible way to describe the work of Christian Rex van Minnen. Born in Providence, Rhode Island and now living in Brooklyn, Christian takes the traditional notions of oil painting and twists them into some of the most bizarre and grotesque pieces of art I’ve ever seen. They’re brilliant (and you’ve been warned).
Clearly a very talented guy, van Minnen can easily replicate the style of an old Renaissance master, but he distorts and twists the subjects of his paintings, turning them into mangled, infected, catroon-ish beings. He also combines portraiture with still life painting with disturbing results – fruits growing out of a man’s face or a fish tied to a person’s head. And for good measure he even throws in some completely contemporary objects like tattoos or a chair with the phrase “Kill ‘Em All” carved into the back of it.
You can see more of Christian’s work below and on his website.
Saul Bass “BASS” T-Shirt On Sale Info!
mikeshearulesgoddammit stuff from these mondo dudes always sells out immediately
Tomorrow we will be releasing three brand new shirts in celebration of legendary graphic designer Saul Bass’ 93rd birthday.
Earlier this year while out in LA for meetings, I went by the LACMA for the AMAZING Stanley Kubrick exhibit (if you haven’t been yet, please… open up a new browser window and make arrangements to go. It’s something you really shouldn’t miss. Truly mind blowing.) While there, I saw some comps that Saul Bass had done for the original THE SHINING poster. These comps had notes hand written on them by Kubrick.
It was very fascinating seeing remnants of their process, as it is similar to what Rob, Mitch and I do here at Mondo pretty much every day. So seeing these two titans going back and forth and getting to see their creative process was great. It’s crazy to think that even someone as legendary as Saul Bass would get art directed… but, as this was obviously a time before computers, Saul and Kubrick would write back and forth through letters. Some of these letters were ALSO included in the exhibit. Take a look at the amazing signature that Saul Bass has…
And that’s where this idea was born. Tomorrow is Saul Bass’ 93rd birthday and we want to celebrate by putting out this officially licensed “BASS” shirt, featuring his signature and caricature fish. We have very limited quantities of these available and they will go on sale tomorrow, May 8th, at a random time at www.mondotees.com. Please follow us on Twitter for the on sale announcement.

In the spirit of openheartedness and what life is really all about, I’ll go so far as to say that the fear of others may mask some deep-seated desire to understand, and maybe even to love. Because really, what is there to be afraid of? Few people today don’t know—or have in their families—at least one loving couple who are raising children, same-sex or not. And it’s really just the loving part that matters. That same-sex marriage could go from its preliminary draft of “diagnosable” to the final edit of “so what?” must indicate some positive evolution on the part of the larger human consciousness. My wife, being a biology teacher, puts it even more succinctly: “Why are all these people so worried about who everybody else is sleeping with, anyway?” (Score two for Moms.)

The Monuments Men of World War II
The Monuments Men were a group of men and women from thirteen nations, most of whom volunteered had expertise as museum directors, curators, art scholars and educators, artists, architects, and archivists. The Monuments Men job description was simple: to save as much of the culture of Europe as they could during combat.

mikeshearulesa friend of mine has this book too, it's insane and awesome
todf:
Codex Seraphinianus, 1976-1978
‘The Codex Seraphinianus is a book written and illustrated by Italian artist, architect and industrial designer Luigi Serafini, from 1976 to 1978. The book appears to be a visual encyclopedia of an unknown world, written in one of its languages, an alphabetic writing intended to be meaningless.’
A couple friends of mine have copies of this (I was just looking at the copy at Strand), but it’s always been too pricy for my blood. If you get a chance to see one in person, do it.
I’d forgotten about this. I once gave a copy to a couple of bibliophile friends when they married. One of the most rewarding gifts I ever gave. I’ll always treasure being told that it had instantly become “one” of the weirdest books in their collection. They have, it must be said, a very weird collection.

Over 70 Killed in Garment Factory Collapse
mikeshearulesgood to be aware of where your stuff comes from
A day after cracks were discovered in the building's edifice—but supervisors forced workers to work anyway—an eight-story garment factory and commercial center in Bangladesh collapsed, killing at least 70 people and injuring hundreds more. The disaster is the latest in a string of horrific workplace accidents at facilities owned and operated by the country's garment industry, which is among the world's largest—and cheapest.
