Heavily influenced by both film and photography, artist Ethan Murrow creates grandiose theatrical narratives manifested as large-scale graphite drawings. The artworks are populated with adventurers, inventors and dreamers, in what Winston Wachter gallery calls “characters as outrageous innovators and absurd explorers capturing a sense of adventure, satire, fun and defeat.” Murrow’s latest works involve a series of drawings set in different American states for his show State Flag currently at Winston Wachter in New York through May 2014. You can see much more of his work here and on his website. (via Illusion)

This is a public service thang on the Vancouver BC buses.

I love so many things about this picture.

- The Hamster has brought pizza onto the bus, opened it and just threw a slice on the floor.

-he is eating a bucket of whole fish with fish heads and fish faces.

-he is drinking a Jub’s sized thing of GUZZ.

-also the 2 assholes that are judging how my man enjoys his lunch are sitting on what looks to be an empty bus. Move back already if you can’t stand to see a strong hamster live his life by his own rules.

I also love how he is eating with his tongue flipped outside of his mouth, like that shit just gets in the way.

Dancing Shadow Sculptures by Dpt. and Laurent Craste [Updated]

Dancing Shadow Sculptures by Dpt. and Laurent Craste [Updated] shadows projection porcelain light kinetic sculpture ceramics

Parade is an interactive art installation concevied by ceramacist Laurent Craste and digital agency Dpt. for the Chromatic festival in Montreal. At first glance the piece looks rather mundane: two misshapen porcelain vases sit atop a pedestal inside a wood cube, lit from above by an industrial light. But move the light and suddenly the magic happens as shadows projected from the vases animate to life. What a fun piece.

Update: Of course things like this are never as simple as they appear. Dpt. explains further that the animated “shadows” are coming from a hidden projector which tracks the movements of the faux light source. We’ve been tricked! But I suppose that’s kind of the point.

cinephilearchive: John Waters and David Lynch meet outside of...

cinephilearchive:

John Waters and David Lynch meet outside of Bob’s Big Boy restaurant in Los Angeles, 1979.

“Lynch had been with John Waters earlier on the day of the interview and almost got him to join us. David later provided me with a copy of his short film ‘The Amputee,’ also shot by Elmes, which we screened following the interview on one TV set outside on the UCLA campus — a world premier. The interview ends on one of the great lines from David Lynch, who said he wasn’t interested in Hollywood stars at the time: ‘If you’re going into the netherworld, you don’t want to go in with Chuck Heston.’” —Tom Christie

johndarnielle: you know what I loved unicorns when I was...

johndarnielle:

you know what

I loved unicorns when I was eleven/twelve years old and then I learned that it was real soft and nerdy to love unicorns so I checked out of the whole unicorn-liking mindset because I felt a need to be hardening myself and copping a dark-stuff-only stance

then when I was 19 my girlfriend gave me a coffee cup with a unicorn on it and on receiving it I discovered that I had internalized some bullshit anti-unicorn stance and it made me sad

to those unicorns who didn’t get liked by me during my bullshit years: my bad, do you like carrots, I will leave a plate of carrots out by the back door, I also have oats

Tulsa OK 1921: US Government Bombs US City

National Guard troops patrolling the streets armed. Thousands of black people held in a convention center. Hundreds of black dead, with bodies piled like wood. That was not New Orleans, that was Tulsa, Oklahoma, in June 1921.

On May 30, 1921 a young black man named Dick Rowland, stumbled into a white woman, while entering an elevator. He was accused of assault, and arrested the next day. Newly rich from oil Tulsa, was a Ku Klux Klan town. Rowland was sentenced to be hanged. The Tulsa Tribune called for a “Negro lynching tonight.”

The white mob was surprised when they were met by several dozen armed black men, dressed in their World War I uniforms. This led to a racist three day destruction of the black neighborhood of Greenwood. The Red Cross reported 300 mostly dead black people.

Greenwood called “Little Africa,” was a relatively wealthy community. White mobs, many deputized, destroyed every house, store, church or school. The mob met resistance from an armed black population. Governor Robertson declared martial law. The National Guard arrived with machine gun mounted trucks, and airplanes hovering over Greenwood. It was the first time an American city was bombed from the air, by the US government.

Over 6,000 black people, were round up and held in the convention center and fairgrounds, as long as eight days. The homeless were shuttled into a tent city, where typhoid and malnutrition took over. Blacks were allowed out of the convention center, with a tag, with an employers name. Thosands fled the city.

Attempts to turn Greenwood into an industrial zone were unsuccessful. For several years, it was deprived of paved streets, running water, and garbage collection.

Waterbears can go without food or water for more than a decade. They can survive temperatures from zero to above the boiling point of water, pressure six times stronger than the deepest ocean trench, radiation hundreds of times higher than the fatal dose for a human, and the vacuum of space.

I’ve never seen one in motion. :O
