Infographic: The evolution of bicycles

by noreply@blogger.com (biotv)

An illustrated history of the bicycle, available as print on Pop Chart Lab:
With over 75 intricately detailed illustrations we've traced the evolutionary tree of the bicycle from 1780 to the present day. From the early high-wheel "boneshakers" of the Victorian Era to the first racing bikes to the more recent evolution of mountain bikes and BMX rides, we've brought together all of the many forms of the bicycle as well as landmark models to create a be-spoke rendering of two-wheeled transportation.

Aging 60 years in 5 minutes

by noreply@blogger.com (biotv)
In his project Danielle, video artist Anthony Cerniello tries to slowly capture the aging process of a person.

(Watch the whole video, don't skip around or you will miss the whole fun.)

From Collosal:
Last Thanksgiving, Cerniello traveled to his friend Danielle’s family reunion and with still photographer Keith Sirchio shot portraits of her youngest cousins through to her oldest relatives with a Hasselblad medium format camera. Then began the process of scanning each photo with a drum scanner at the U.N. in New York, at which point he carefully edited the photos to select the family members that had the most similar bone structure. Next he brought on animators Nathan Meier and Edmund Earle who worked in After Effects and 3D Studio Max to morph and animate the still photos to make them lifelike as possible. Finally, Nuke (a kind of 3D visual effects software) artist George Cuddy was brought on to smooth out some small details like the eyes and hair.

The vibrant pinks and contours of the first landscape shot caught our eyes, which made us wonder where the extraordinary place photographed is. Turns out it’s Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in the northeastern state of Brazil, Maranhão, and a lucky few who have visited this unique location took these remarkable photos of it. Nearby the Amazon rainforest, the park receives substantial seasonal rain that creates lagoons surrounded by white-sand hills and a natural habitat for freshwater fish and seabirds to flourish.

Ghost ( not Sam ;-) )

# Our last Flickr Friday theme was #DoubleExposure. This is a selection of our favorites from your submissions.

FlickrFriday can be very inspiring, challenging you to step out of your comfort zone. It was a pleasure to see all your creativity! Double exposures of people and nature were one of your favorite themes as you can see above. We also saw a lot of abstracts that teased the imagination to figure out what it was that you photographed — with the solution oftentimes only a click away in the description or tags.

We were happy to see a lot of analog contributions, but even those of you that were not equipped with "the right gear", found ways to create your double exposure in post production or took a literal approach by shooting an existing exposure. Each week, we enjoy browsing through your photos, and particularly this week it was great to read that we inspired you to explore your cameras and see how you can make your personal double exposure become reality. Read about others’ experiences and explore more of your brilliant submissions for this theme in the Flickr Friday group pool.

As every week, you can still submit your photos taken between the announcement last Friday and today, but more importantly get ready and start shooting for the new theme #LifeIsLikeABoxOfChocolates.

The next selection of your shots will be showcased right here on the Flickr Blog next Friday. If you would like to invite your friends to take part in this week’s challenge retweet us or share our status.

Explorer’s passionate pursuit of urban decay

by Ameya Pendse

“I’ve frozen in fear many times,” says urban exploration photographer Michelle LaCavalier, known on Flickr as ManicMelange Photography. “I’ve experienced extreme heights, evading police or security, squatters, scrappers; you name it, I’ve seen it all.”

“The only thing that gets me through is when I know whatever is waiting for me on the other side is a gem to shoot,” she says.

Michelle’s passion for photographing abandoned and decayed buildings stems from her fascination with human behavior and how people live.

Done

Demolition

“Going into these buildings that have so much history [and] being able to stand in a spot where so many other people before me have made memories, to touch the things these people have touched, just makes me feel more alive,” she says. “It’s incredible.”

Michelle says urban exploration is a lot about who you know and what those people know. It isn’t easy for her to get access into many buildings. And, as a female, it’s often unsafe for her to go alone.

Broken dreams, broken heart, broken home //

“I do my own research about the buildings,” Michelle says. “If the location has a history and a story, then I seek someone who can either tell me how to get in or go with someone who can get me in. It’s a rush to be one of the first photographers in a new space. But as a rule, it’s always smart to have someone with you.”

Michelle readily admits she’s a “touch-everything type of girl” who likes to get the whole experience inside these abandoned buildings. Dangers and unexpected surprises are part of the deal.

Green Mile You were with me, even when I thought I was alone //

“Every step I take has to be slow and focused,” Michelle says. “Floors have soft spots and you can fall straight through. You always have to be careful of rusty nails, glass chards, dirty needles.”

Demolition // Rubble from above Bigroom

Michelle has also encountered a fair share of health hazards inside the locations she visits. Many are dangerous to breathe, such as asbestos, mold, chemicals and animal droppings. To protect herself, she often wears gas masks and respirators which she often incorporates in her shots.

One of Michelle’s favorite locations to shoot are hospital and psychiatric insane asylums.

“The people that suffered, got better, healed, passed away, it’s all there,” she says. “It’s all in the walls, there’s always patient records laying around, you can actually read about someone and see their entire life. I love it.”

Love Factory boat Demolition // Longview

Michelle’s goal is to reconnect her viewers emotionally to these buildings, that are left behind when people move on, and breathe life into them again.

“I consider my photography a method of storytelling,” Michelle says. “To document that these buildings are still interesting, important and full of answers is my passion. When people react to my images with curiosity, questions or fascination, it’s worth every danger I encounter. It’s the ultimate accomplishment.”

Visit Michelle’s photostream to see more of her photography.

Zilian: 5 Anos, 5 Mulheres

by Mónica Lice
