holy fuck

I just did a quick perusal of the Coptic resources on this site, and it has all the resources I’ve personally found worthwhile and then some. These are resources that took me months, if not years, to discover and compile. I am thoroughly impressed. The other languages featured on the site are:

  • Akkadian
  • Arabic
  • Aramaic
  • Church Slavonic
  • Egyptian (hieroglyphics and Demotic)
  • Elamite
  • Ethiopic (Ge’ez)
  • Etruscan
  • Gaulish

  • Greek
  • Hebrew
  • Hittite
  • Latin
  • Mayan (various related languages/dialects)

  • Old Frisian
  • Old High German
  • Old Irish
  • Old Norse
  • Old Persian
  • Old Turkic

Fun fact: Tenochtitlan fell in 1521. From 1603 onwards, large numbers of honest-to-god fricking Japanese Samurai came to Mexico from Japan to work as guardsmen and mercenaries.

Ergo, it would be 100% historically accurate to write a story starring a quartet consisting of the child or grandchild of Aztec Noblemen, an escaped African slave, a Spanish Jew fleeing the Inquisition (which was relaxed in Mexico in 1606, for a time) and a Katana-wielding Samurai in Colonial Mexico.

Also a whole bunch of Chinese Characters BECAUSE MEXICO CITY HAD A CHINATOWN WITHIN TEN YEARS OF THE FALL OF THE AZTEC EMPIRE.

Sculptor Fills Pavilion with Stunning Series of Wire Mesh Architecture

by Kelly Richman-Abdou
Suko

OOo I like the ghost image/x-ray quality to this!

Wire Mesh Architecture Wire Mesh Architecture Edoardo Tresoldi

Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi is renowned for his sky-high sculptures of figures and edifices meticulously crafted from mesh. For his latest project, Tresoldi has filled an entire pavilion with an impressive arrangement of awe-inspiring wire mesh architecture.

Tresoldi's series of structures beautifully blends a classical aesthetic with an avant-garde approach. The sculptures feature age-old architectural elements like orderly columns, grand-scale archways, and colossal domes. However, their wire mesh construction, strategic lighting, and suspended installation gives the antiquated monuments a modern and ethereal feel. Furthermore, the grid-like, industrial nature of each wire sculpture is cleverly offset by natural accents like trees, plants, and living walls. This material juxtaposition adds yet another dimension of depth to the immersive installation.

Tresoldi was commissioned to create these wire works for a royal event in Abu Dhabi. In collaboration with DesignLab Experience, a creative company specializing in creating “environments that combine advanced technology with refined craftsmanship,” the artist was asked to sculpt site-specific installations for the event's 7,000-square-meter space. Once his work has wowed guests at the artsy affair, it will be removed and re-installed in public spaces throughout Abu Dhabi. Naturally, we can't wait to see how each wire work of art will interact with its new surroundings!

Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi has created a tableau of wire mesh architecture.

Creative Mom Dresses Up in Amazing Cosplay to Represent Older Women Characters

by Kelly Richman-Abdou
Suko

I love her choice of characters!!!

Tia Sol Cartoon Cosplay Pop Culture Costumes

Yubaba from “Spirited Away”

Proving that costumes aren't just for kids, Solange Amorim, or Tia sol, has taken dress-up to another level. The Brazil-based mom enjoys attending local cosplay events, where she wows young and old attendees alike with her spot-on pop culture costumes.

Tia sol crafts each eccentric ensemble using separate articles purchased online, which she creatively pieces together into amazingly accurate get-ups. With a preference for cartoon cosplay, she cleverly chooses characters not often represented by younger costume enthusiasts. Muriel from Courage The Cowardly Dog, Yubaba from Spirited Away, and the fairy godmother from Cinderella are just a few of the older leading ladies Tia sol has opted to emulate in her “world of make-believe.”

Though, today, Tia sol doesn't miss a single gathering in her city, her love of costumes is relatively new. Prior to dressing up herself, she would accompany her daughter to the events. Eventually, she was dared by a friend to participate, and the rest of is cosplay history. “A friend said that I wouldn't have the guts, I chose a character and had the costume made without saying another word. It was Tweety Bird's granny,” she explains to Buzzfeed. “I didn't know that I wouldn't be able to stop myself from going to the events!”

With a knack for cartoon cosplay, Brazilian mom Tia Sol creates and wears one-of-a-kind pop culture costumes that represent older women.

Artist Embroiders Portraits of Women Using Cascading Thread as Flowing Hair

by Kelly Richman-Abdou
Suko

Why have I not seen more embroidery like this? What a cool idea! And you could do hair in all kinds of colors...

Hair Embroidery Embroidered Portraits Sheena Liam

Artist Sheena Liam has a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted approach to embroidery. Favoring female subjects, with a focus on flowing hairstyles, Liam creates unique portraits of women and girls with thread tresses that cascade from the canvas.

Each portrait is created using black thread, culminating in a collection of works reminiscent of simple yet exquisitely rendered line drawings. While the majority of each embroidered image lays flat, the subject's hair falls loosely from her face, adding a touch of three-dimensionality to an otherwise uniform surface. Thanks to the thread's versatility, Liam is able to experiment with a range of hairstyles, from perfectly coiffed braided pigtails to loosely tied top-knots.

As a nod to the traditional craft, Liam uses an embroidery hoop to complete each inventive piece. In some cases, the figures' hair even extends beyond the frame, conveying the artist's tendency to challenge the boundaries and limitations of the conventional craft.

Artist Sheena Liam's hair embroidery art features portraits of girls and women with three-dimensional tresses.

Loving Husband Prepares Beautifully Symmetrical Breakfasts Every Day for Himself and His Partner

These are still amazing breakfasts. I can't believe he's still making these. I'm not a breakfast person but... for this... I'd definitely reconsider.

SymmetryBreakfast Food Photography Food Photographer Michael Zee

Kiribath, a Sri Lankan coconut milk rice with mini mangoes, honey and edible flowers, served on banana leaves.

As an “online phenomenon that incorporates world cuisines, contemporary design and a story of love over the meal of breakfast,” SymmetryBreakfast continues to captivate connoisseurs of food, art, and photography alike. Created by Shanghai-based food photographer and doting husband Michael Zee, the now-famous Instagram account features photos of delectably designed meals with a twist: each pair of plated creations is not only undeniably appetizing, but beautifully balanced, too.

Each photo has a similar layout: 2 main plates (or, depending on the meal, bowls, boards, skillets, and even leaves) are symmetrically situated and surrounded by equally balanced drinking glasses, soup bowls, and side dishes. The arrangements are shot from above, which emphasizes their matching positioning. In addition to a focus on symmetry, the photographs also showcase the creativity of Zee's cuisines, as well as the color-coordination of his tableware!

While the page began as a visual record of Zee's (literally) balanced breakfasts, it has since morphed into an all-day extravaganza. Morning meals, such as syrup-slathered waffles, swirly cinnamon rolls, and fruit-filled puff pastries, still regularly feature, but, now, so do lunches, dinners, and even desserts. Just like his celebrated breakfasts, Zee's other meals are inventive and eclectic. One look through his Instagram account, and it's clear that Zee and his husband enjoy a diverse daily menu!

If you're interested in emulating Zee's creative breakfasts, be sure to check out his unique cookbooks, SymmetryBreakfast: 100 Recipes for the Loving Cook and SymmetryBreakfast: Cook-Love-Share.

20+ Black Wedding Cakes That Add Goth-Inspired Flair to a Special Affair

by Sara Barnes
Suko

I thought these would be cheesy but actually some of them are really lovely! And what lovely deep black colors they managed!

Cakes are definitely having a moment. Whether they’re masquerading as prickly cacti or dripping with sweet decadence, turning dessert into art is en vogue—not to mention delicious. The same goes for wedding cakes. Although we’ve seen some spectacular geodes and galaxy-inspired creations, dark wedding cakes are arguably the most stunning of all. Channeling your inner goth, these multi-tiered creations feature black icing and fondant that adds a dramatic flair to the special affair.

Black is often seen as an unusual color choice for weddings, but as daring brides have proved, it’s a welcome break from convention. Here, the dark icing acts as a backdrop for creative bakers to add eye-catching accents like cascades of flowers, hand-painted gold, and geometric patterning.

While infusing the dessert with an accent color is popular, some of our favorite cakes fully embrace the black-on-black look. To add visual variety, pastry chefs stack textures and finishes. Tortik Annushka, for example, has created multi-tiered cakes where every layer uses a different decorating technique. This could look busy and unfocused, but it instead appears elegant and modern thanks to the single color.

Getting hungry yet? Check out over 20 more unique wedding cakes below!

Having a black wedding cake might be an unconventional dessert, but the results are stunning—and delicious.

Fun Vampire Fact; the reason that Vampires traditionally cannot see their reflections in a mirror is because mirrors used to be backed with a reflective layer of silver — which, as the metal of purity, would not ‘interact’ with Vampires, who are the Devil’s work.

However, modern mirrors have used aluminum as their reflective backing for many years now — and aluminum is not a ‘picky’ metal at all. So Vampires are able to see their reflections in modern mirrors.

All I can think about is a vampire used to not seeing their reflection in mirrors for centuries, and one day they are just walking along and unknowingly pass a mirror backed with aluminum and THEY NEARLY SHIT THEMSELVES.

The first vampires who saw their reflection 100% reacted the way a dog does to seeing themselves in a mirror, this is backed up by facts :D

Man Reveals How to Build Your Own Futuristic “Magic Mirror” in Helpful DIY

by Sara Barnes
Suko

I feel like sithel would do something cool with this :)

DIY Magic Mirror

You’re probably familiar with the famous phrase, “Mirror, mirror, on the wall…” Uttered by the Evil Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the line prompts a face to appear within the reflective surface and speak to her. The iconic scene, with its striking visual, has continually intrigued us; before modern technology, however, it was just a fantasy. But with some ingenuity and coding, Redditor Toothie96 has produced a magic mirror and shared the DIY on Imgur. His hi-tech creation displays information like the time, date, weather forecast, and news all on its face—a contemporary riff on the fairy tale.

Toothie96 built the DIY magic mirror as a gift for his significant other. “She uses it every morning and night when she's getting ready,” he explains. “The whole idea was to spend less time on her phone, and at a glance she has most of the information she'd need without the distraction of notifications on her phone.”

To begin this project, Toothie96 chopped pine wood and secured it into a frame that was deep enough to hold all of the technology. After that was perfected, he moved onto the electronics. “Due to the limited depth of the back housing, everything had to be modified to ensure it would fit,” he said. This required a bit of desoldering parts and rearranging them so they would lie flush with the back housing.

So, how did Toothie96 get the information to show up on the mirror? After all, he wrote, “Normal mirrors don't let light through them.” He obtained a custom-cut piece of two-way glass that allowed some light to shine through. For additional illumination, he wrapped the frame in LED lights. He also added a Bluetooth speaker and a sensor so that you can swipe your hand over the mirror to turn it on and off. Then, a small Raspberry Pi computer was fitted into back; this vital piece of technology controls all of the information on the front of the mirror.

The most time consuming part of the whole endeavor was the coding for the mirror's user interface. Toothie96 had never coded before, so he looked to the open source MagicMirror2 framework for guidance. While daunting, many hours later, he got it working. “On a scale of 1-10 [of difficulty], I’d give it a 6,” Toothie admits. “Honestly, even with the Magic Mirror framework, there's still so much code to get your head around when things don't work out first time, especially for someone with no coding experience.”

Redditor Toothie96 created the type of mirror you'd see in a fairy tale. This DIY magic mirror displays helpful information on its face. He started by building a wood frame.

Magic Mirror DIY Magic Mirror DIY Magic Mirror DIY Magic Mirror DIY

After the frame was complete, Toothie96 rearranged and desoldered some of the electronics to ensure they'd fit flush with the back of the mirror.

Magic Mirror DIY DIY Magic Mirror DIY Magic Mirror

The parts were secured with insulation tape. LED lighting was added for an additional illuminated effect.

DIY Magic Mirror Magic Mirror DIY

The Redditor even added a small Bluetooth speaker.

Magic Mirror DIY Magic Mirror DIY

A sensor in the bottom of the frame allows the mirror to turn on and off with the wave of your hand.

Once that was complete, the Raspberry Pi computer was added. This crucial element controls the information that appears on the mirror's screen.

Raspberry Pi Magic Mirror

Prior to this project, Toothie96 had no experience with coding. He used the MagicMirror2 framework to help him through it.

The mirror displays helpful information, such as the time, date, weather, train times, and news.

Once the coding was complete, the back was sealed.

Created as a gift for his significant other, he says: “She uses it every morning and night when she's getting ready… The whole idea was to spend less time on her phone, and at a glance she has most of the information she'd need without the distraction of notifications on her phone.”

New York Public Library Transforms Underground Train into a ‘Subway Library’

by Kelly Richman-Abdou
Suko

I know it's a stunt (but great ad for a cool program) but if I lived there, I'd probably make an effort to find and ride in this train car.

Subway Library New York Public Library Free Online Books

Attention, New Yorkers! Thanks to an inspiring initiative by the New York Public Library and the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), your morning commute just got a little bit better. “Subway Library,” a free digital platform, invites and encourages passengers to “browse and download books, short stories, chapters and excerpts that can be read quickly and easily during your commute.”

For a 6-week stint, passengers can access all of Subway Library's titles through Transit Wireless, a WiFi network available to travelers in trains and stations. Once connected, commuters are presented with a plethora of digital books, short stories, and excerpts that have been donated to the New York Public Library by publishers. With hundreds of pieces to choose from, book-loving commuters are guaranteed a pleasant, page-turning journey no matter the distance (or delays!).

To celebrate the launch of Subway Library, the MTA has given one lucky train a festive makeover. On its exterior, colorful letters spell out “Subway Library.” Inside, seats are camouflaged as shelves, “bricks” line the walls, and a reproduction of the historic ceiling found in the New York Public Library's recently-reopened Rose Main Reading Room has been installed overhead. For a limited time, you can find this spirited train as it alternates between the E and F lines in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens.

To celebrate Subway Library, an initiative that offers free online books to commuters, the New York Public Library and the MTA have given one lucky train a book-themed makeover.

But Spinebreaker fancied herself the brains of this outfit, and when confronted by a gun-wielding stick-up artist who seriously thought he could hit our primary “bank” for the money-laundering operation, just stood there, ruffling her wings softly, only her eyes visible in the shadows where she was lurking.

“The money,” the pissant said, waving the gun not just at Spinebreaker and myself but at our employees, who had been counting and sorting and stacking cash until he busted into the warehouse.

“Are you really gonna make me do this?” I asked Spinebreaker.

“It’s your turn,” she said from the darkness.

Dragons are lazy, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

“Hey, bitch, I said, the money!” the pissant yelled.

“Excuse me I am having a conversation,” I told him.

“Fuck your conversation!” he said, and actually fired the gun, and probably I’m alive today because Spinebreaker’s tail snapped out in front of me and bounced the bullet off into a concrete wall. Dragonscale is better than kevlar for that kind of thing.

“Seriously?” I asked her, as she resumed her ruffling. The pissant looked startled.

“It’s your turn,” she insisted.

“Ugh, fine,” I replied, and while the pissant was still trying to figure out what was happening, I stepped forward, picked up a chair, broke it across his face, and stepped on the back of his neck to keep him down.

“I know you little bastards have some truly weird ideas about dragons,” I told him, bending over while he squealed and struggled, “so as a human who has done some deals with them, let me explain to you a thing.”

I kicked his shoulder, rolling him over, and pressed the gap between toe and heel of my shoe over his throat again. “There is no way to gender a dragon without asking their pronouns politely, which means that hens and drakes are the same size, and similarly tempered. Which means that when you decided to hit us today, you were going up against a full grown dragon and one of the few humans she has thought worthy to enter into partnership with. You thought you were gonna get some scared little five-foot hen? No my friend. Instead you got me. And then there’s her.”

Spinebreaker emerged from the shadows then: fifteen feet tall at a crouch, forty feet long from her teeth to her tail, covered in swirls of black, blue, and gold, patterned with streaks of deep oxblood red. The rill of gold that ran from brow to jaw was fully extended, making her head look twice as wide as it was; her wings were spread, barbs emerging from their sheaths, and her scales caught the dim light through the warehouse windows like the most terrifying disco ball in the world. A dragon in full battle-rear is one of the most glorious sights in the world, and one of the rarest if you aren’t Dragon-bought, or a partner in business like I am.

“BOO,” she said, and the pissant wet himself and passed out.

There was gentle laughter from our employees as they got back to work.

“Make me do all the hard parts,” I grumbled. Spinebreaker patted my head with a delicate, clawed hand as she passed me to pick him up and carry him outside for the garbage collectors to find.

AAAAHHH SAM WROTE ME A STORY! *flails*

*shelves it with the 2006 Wizard Bird drabble and treasures them*

Aw, I’m glad you liked it!

I’m still turning this story over in my head, trying to find a way into it as a larger narrative. Hopefully it’ll crack open for me at some point.

Japanese Artist’s Delicate Paper Cutting Pays Beautiful Homage to ‘Alice in Wonderland’

by Sara Barnes
Suko

Lovely but my hand cramps just looking at it.

Paper Cutting Art

Decorative paper cutting is an ancient art. In Japan, it’s known as kirie and was first developed shortly after paper was first brought to the country in 610 AD. With arrival of the material, the incredible art of paper cutting has only grown more complex as the centuries go on. Continuing this great tradition is artist Nami Sakashita. With a sharp blade and a steady hand, she reveals long-form prose from a single piece of origami paper. One of her most recent creations is a passage from Lewis Carroll’s classic story, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Sakashita’s cutout is a love letter to the written word. Each character is painstakingly extracted from the black sheet and is flawless in its execution—none of the words are torn or distorted. Rather, they’re all connected with a beautiful lace-like pattern that covers the entire paper in graceful, circular lines. These delicate swooping curves transition into the edges of the piece and transform into flower petals. The result is a fluid composition that guides your eye from one end of Sakashita’s paper cutting art to the other.

With the stunning amount of detail and meticulous process, it’s no surprise that it took Sakashita a week to complete this cut paper piece. If you’re near Tokyo in July, you can see Sakashita’s work in person at the Art Imagine Gallery from July 21 to July 25, 2017.

Nami Sakashita created a stunning homage to Lewis Carroll’s classic story, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Using a sharp blade and a steady hand, she extracted a passage from the book out of a black piece of origami paper.

15+ Artists Whose Mind-Bending Optical Illusions Will Make You Look Twice

by Sara Barnes
Suko

Love optical illusions. That Mimi Choi makeup art is crazy good.

Illusion Art

Art has the ability to amaze and inspire, and few artworks do this better than those that fool the eye. These types of art—aptly referred to as illusion art—easily trick the viewer into believing what they think they see. For instance, seeing what you believe to be a 3D object when it's actually a cleverly shaded and colored 2D drawing. (If you've been following My Modern Met, you'll notice we've featured several artists throughout the years who paint three-dimensional subjects on a flat surface to make it look like they're popping off the page and into real life.)

Throughout the ages, we’ve come to understand the illusionistic nature of art itself; how things like darkened edges and shadows represent roundness and volume. The most intriguing facet of illusion art, however, is also known as optical illusions. Through painting, sculpture, and design, this style of visual manipulation can make you believe that stationary lines are moving or that an entire building has disappeared.

Illusion Art History

So, how did modern illusion art get its start? Its roots are in kinetic art, which is a genre that creates movement “perceivable by the viewer.” Op Art is an offshoot of it, in which this movement is produced through optical illusions. The 1950s was its heyday, but that wasn't the first we had seen of these sorts of mind-bending works. Rubin’s vase is one of the most famous examples of this. It was created in 1915 by Danish psychologist Edgar Rubin and is still popular today.

Contemporary forms of illusion art are as varied as the tools used to create them. Whether it’s perfectly-painted body art or surreal children’s book illustrations, each of these pieces use some form of visual trickery. They’ll make you look twice—once out of disbelief and another to figure out how the artist worked their magic.

Take a look at how illusion art manifests itself today—from illustrations to street art to body art.

Hikaru Cho‘s body painting skills play serious tricks on the eye, making it difficult for the viewer to discern whether Photoshop is involved. She often plays with the idea of secret layers to people. By adding surreal visual prompts like a half-unzipped zipper on the back or a cracked exterior shell of a head, she hints at the multiple layers and hidden truths each person conceals.

Look at her STRUT!!! She is dragging that endorphin for filth and using that filament as her runway, bitch.

Fun Paper Animal Puppets Designed to Move in Unexpected Ways When Touched

by Kelly Richman-Abdou
Suko

Holy shit these are amazing!

Animal Puppets Karakuri Kirigami Paper Dolls Haruki Nakamura

In his menagerie of moveable animal puppets, Japanese designer Haruki Nakamura adds a mechanical touch to the ancient art of paper crafting. Inspired by kirigami—an origami-like technique that employs cuts in addition to foldsNakamura creates paper dolls that move in unexpected and unusual ways.

Crafted from paper and cleverly constructed, each whimsical creature puts a paper twist on karakuri, or mechanized puppets. Like traditional karakuri, each figure's movements are prompted by human touch. This means that when pressed, poked, or prodded in certain places, the puppets come alive. Whether they're shedding surprising disguises, showcasing amazing acrobatics, or coming out of their shells (literally), the animals exhibit both the capabilities of the kirigami craft and Nakamura's creative approach to paper dolls.

While Nakamura sells his delightful dolls in his online shop, they only ship within Japan. However, if you're overseas and would like to get your paws on your own paper puppets, you can learn how to create your own with Karakuri: How to Make Mechanical Paper Models That Move. Or, if it's kirigami that has piqued your paper interest, check out Kirigami: The Art Of Folding & Cutting Paper.

Season 3 MoN, perhaps? :)

wintersoldierfell:

i’m so tired of movies whose only real premise is “the best dude in the world at this non-white thing… is a white dude.” like The Last Samurai, where Tom Cruise is for some reason the only one who can properly understand samurai culture. i want the opposite of that. i want a movie where the best person in the world at this extremely white thing is a non-white person. Like imagine Aziz Ansari has to enter a bagpiping contest to save the honor of some teeny Scottish town and ends up marrying the stoic, humorless Scottish babe who is inexplicably good with swords. Or the fate of the American nation somehow depends on Li Bingbing learning how to play bluegrass. Or idk Canada’s hockey team has lost its coach and is going to suck and only the magic of Lupita Nyong’o can save them. Or maybe there’s a sports team from a country that doesn’t traditionally do the sport and oh I’m thinking of Cool Runnings. Let’s all rewatch Cool Runnings

…anyway has Aziz Ansari seen this post yet
