let’s be real, no matter how crap this movie is I WILL be going multiple times. thus, multiple outfits - here’s number 2

ALRIGHT, getting a lot of messages arguing with the rooster! so I’ll break it down once, & then please obey the rooster’s speech bubble

1. Birds are Dinosaurs

image

at this point, no sane person can deny the relationship between birds & non-avian dinosaurs. if through magic you saw a photo of velociraptor today, you’d just say “neat-o I think that turkey has teeth!” & go back to scrolling your twitter feed.

but let’s clarify what a dinosaur is: Dinosauria is defined as the MCRA (most common recent ancestor) of Megalosaurus & Iguandon, and all their descendants thereof. you see that branching cladogram up above? everything past ‘Archosauria’ is an archosaur, including birds, everything past ‘Dinosauria’ is a dinosaur, including birds, and everything past ‘Aves’ is a bird.

so, Tyrannosaurus rex is not a bird, but a house sparrow IS a dinosaur.

2. Birds are Reptiles

image

many clades (groups consisting of a common ancestor & all it’s descendants) were made based on physical features like ectothermy and scales, before we fully understood who was related to who. so birds were not originally intended to be grouped with reptiles, but tracing their path backward in the tree of life, birds are nested in Archosauria (crocodiles, pterosaurs, dinosaurs, etc.), which is in turn nested in Reptilia (turtles, lizards, snakes, etc.)

by our own stupid rules, birds are reptiles.

The term “reptiles” should not be used at all in scientific discussions of phylogenetic relationships. Reptiles are a grade, a polyphyletic group constructed before we had evidence of birds being dinosaurs. The grup containing reptiles and birds is Sauropsida. Bird are not reptiles, but they are dinosaurs, which is a much cooler assertion.

Incredible 3D GIFs Created with a Simple Visual Effect

by Pinar
Suko

Simple visual illusions are so nice. I love that you can know what it's doing and it still works.

3d Gif 3d Gifs Animated Gifs Illusion

Animated gifs seem to be everywhere these days, but some gif creators are taking the visual experience of viewing quick clips of silent motion to another level. By carefully adding a couple of solid-colored (typically white), vertical lines to the moving images, an incredible three-dimensional effect is created. As characters and objects move into the foreground, they seemingly extend beyond the barrier of the image.

The solid, dividing strips serve as visual markers for the foreground. Once anything breaks out in font of them, blocking the view of the white dividers, the viewer's brain immediately translates this as a three-dimensional scene. The best 3D gif creators take note of this effect and tend to choose scenes from movies and clips from videos in which something is initially in the background and makes its way into the foreground—whether it be a person, animal, monster, or projectile object.

With the addition of simple vertical lines, ordinary animated images are transformed into amazing 3d gifs.

Model Maker Creates Spooky Miniature Scenes Framed Within Shadow Box Dioramas

by Emma Taggart
Suko

I love miniatures and vignettes.

Shadow boxes by Chimerical Reveries

London-based model maker and founder of Chimerical Reveries Andy Acres invites you to “peer into another world” with his hand-crafted shadow boxes. Inspired by the art of storytelling, each enchanting model depicts eerie, abandoned scenes in miniature scale. Derelict farmhouses, old attics, and fog-filled forests are just some of the places you will find. Ranging in size, each shadow box features meticulous details, rich textures, and deep colors. Viewers are able to inspect Acres’ spooky scenes at different angles to discover intriguing, hidden details and envision their own story.

Applying his background as a skilled illustrator, Acres starts by drawing out his scenes on paper. He then hand-draws each individual element and makes a photocopy before carefully cutting around it with a scalpel to make the stencils. His materials include soft wood, brass screws, plastics, and even real glass for the windows and the front of the box. The framed shadow boxes are back-lit with LED lights, which can be switched on and off using an antique toggle. Acre doesn’t stop working until his models are absolutely perfect. Only when the shadow boxes look “exactly like [his] drawings” does he feel like they are complete.

When describing why he chose to build his scenes rather than paint them on a canvas, he explains, “I have often found it a little frustrating that on occasion I have been unable to see more of an artist's depiction. What was around that corner or just beneath the window ledge? I wanted to create scenes of decrepitude, solitude and abandonment, subjects that are so rich and often entrancing they deserve more than a flat painting. I want my work to not only breathe life but to exhale.”

You can purchase Acre’s shadow boxes through his Etsy shop. They may cost a pretty penny, but that’s the price of hard work.

Woman Who Just Gave Birth Shares the Delicious Food Served to Her in a Japanese Hospital

by Sara Barnes
Suko

Japan actually thinks that maybe mothers who just gave birth might need some time to recover and some feeding up. Standard to recover for 4 days and be fed real food.
What a crazy idea (sarcasm)! The reddit comments pretty much agree that in the US and UK, moms are out in 3-4 hours (same day) and are generally offered cold toast and maybe some packets of jam.

Hospital Food in Japan

Omuraisu, macaroni salad, chicken soup, squid rings, fruit, and green tea

When it comes to hospital food, the dishes often feel like an afterthought. Bland and uninviting, there’s a reason that people in the U.S. want their loved ones to sneak in a burger and fries from the outside world. In Japan, however, it’s a different story; the hospital food looks like a gourmet meal! A Redditor with the username hadababyinjp documented the dishes she ate after giving birth in a local clinic, and there was no weird jello to be found on any of her trays.

The dishes included things you’d find served in a restaurant. During one of her meals, she had chicken with mushroom sauce, braised pumpkin and pork, and a daikon carrot side salad. The Redditor snapped photos of all of these preparations—including the rest of what she was served. It not only sounds appetizing, but looks it, too; seeing these trays might make you unexpectedly crave some hot soba noodles.

In the comments of the now-viral Reddit post, hadababyinjp sheds more light onto labor and delivery in Japan. “The standard here is 4 days for all women,” she explains. “My delivery was very standard, no complications.” Of the food, she recalls, “All the calories were posted every day so we could see how much we were eating. All three meals always added up to between 2000-2500 calories, plus they gave us a small afternoon snack like a cream puff or small piece of cake and tea.” This, she says, “is a bit much for most Japanese women,” but that the overfeeding was probably to help with recovery and offer options in case there were food that a patient didn’t like.

The Reddit post, aside from offering a fascinating look into hospital food across the world, also yielded an interesting discussion on giving birth in different countries. Read the entire thing here.

Massive Ancient Underground City Once Housed 20,000 People

by Jessica Stewart
Suko

I really need to get to Cappadocia.

Derinkuyu Underground City

Photo: Nevit Dilmen [CC BY-SA 3.0 or GFDL], via Wikimedia Commons

Many of us have fantasized about having a door in our home that leads us to a hidden world, but can you imagine a buried city laying just behind the walls of your house? In 1963, a Turkish man knocked down a wall in his basement, only to discover the ancient 18-story underground city of Derinkuyu.

At one time housing up to 20,000 people, Derinkuyu is one of the largest underground cities in the world. Located in Turkey's Cappadocia region, it's one of over 200 subterranean cities that were carved into the volcanic rock. In fact, Derinkuyu is connected to some of these subterranean settlements by tunnels that run for miles. Part of what makes it so impressive is the city's depth of over 250 feet, as well as the organization needed to meet the demands of a population living underground.

When was the underground city created?

It's thought that the Derinkuyu underground city was started by the Phrygians, an Indo-European people, in the 8th to 7th centuries BCE. After the population became Christian in Roman times, they began to include chapels in their underground dwellings. It's thought that the Christian population used the underground city to escape persecution by the Romans.

But it is during the Byzantine period that the underground city flourished. During the Arab-Byzantine wars from 780 to 1180 Derinkuyu was used as a refuge for Muslim Arabs—it was during this period that the tunnels connecting the subterranean cities were added.

An alternate theory places the creation of the underground city much earlier, with the ancient Anatolian Hittites. This placed construction at about 15th century BC, with the area being used to flee invading enemies.

What was life like in Derinkuyu?

Though not ideal for the claustrophobic, these ancient cultures tried to make life as comfortable—and safe—as possible in the underground city. Long shafts measuring up to 180 feet provided ventilation, while large, round stone doors weighing up to 1,000 pounds ensured that invaders could not gain entry into the underground city.

Aside from chapels for worship, there are also areas for livestock and numerous wells to provide drinking water. Communal rooms, stables, wine cellars, and oil presses all point to a vibrant replication of aboveground life below the earth. And what about all the waste? That was stored in pots and then transported aboveground whenever possible.

Derinkuyu Today

Open to the public since 1965, the Derinkuyu underground city, along with nearby Kaymaklı, is a well-known tourist attraction in the region. While only 8 of the 18 levels are viewable, it's an incredible opportunity to see man's ability to adapt to their circumstances.

Located in Cappadocia, the central Anatolian region of Turkey, the subterranean city is one of over 200 in the area.

The Hero We Need

Well, I guess that's one way to fight crime and change hearts and minds. Or at least take over hearts and minds. If you know someone who led a life of crime and had a sudden transformation into a mild-mannered, upstanding citizen, he may be harboring a secret within himself. This horror is only found in a world where superheroes, aliens, and zombies collides. Or in our world, when you recall the many posts we've done about parasites that turn their hosts into zombies that do the parasite's bidding. Hollowed Out Book Discovered as 16th Century “Assassin’s Cabinet”

by Jessica Stewart
Suko

Sithel, a new binding project? :) I think I have seen this book before but not with these lovely closeup/detail photos.

Secret Poison Cabinet

Labeled as a “poison cabinet” when placed for auction in 2008, images of this hollowed out book have been causing a stir online ever since. Was it a computer-generated image? Or a modern fake? According to German auction house Hermann Historica—and the private collector who purchased it for €5,200 (about $7,000)—that's not the case.

While calling it an assassin's cabinet may be a bit exaggerated, the dramatically titled curio is a hollowed out book from the 16th century. In the pages' place are eleven drawers of varying sizes with meticulous labels, each spelling out which plant each drawer contained. Of course, many of these plants, while poisonous, were also part of herbal remedies—making it equally possible we are looking at an ornate medicine cabinet.

Traveling kits were not uncommon at the time, as apothecaries would have needed to tote their items around with them. So just what was in the potentially deadly cabinet. Though empty at the time of auction, the silver-knobbed drawers would have contained everything from opium poppy and valerian to Castor Oil plant and Bella Donna. All of these have multiple uses—both in medicine and as a poison.

For instance, Bella Donna was famously used as a poison to kill several emperor's wives during the Roman Empire, but was also used to ward off motion sickness and as a muscle relaxer. Opium poppy, which most know as the base for numerous narcotics, was also used in medicine to treat asthma and upset stomachs. So, if anything, this curiosity certainly shows us that one person's poison is another's medicine.

Known as a “poison cabinet” this 16th-century book was turned into a secret hideaway for poisonous and medicinal plants.

Students Allowed to Wear Costumes for High School IDs and They Do Not Disappoint

by Sara Barnes

I would not have been brave enough in high school to do this for my ID photo but this is pretty awesome.

Funny School ID Photos

Photo: @margordss

By the time your senior year of high school rolls around, you’re ready to graduate. But why not have some fun while you’re eagerly waiting to don your cap and gown? The senior class at the North Farmington High School in Farmington Hills, Michigan starts the year off right with a quirky tradition; they're encouraged to dress up in costume for their school ID photos.

Hilarity ensues as the class of 2018 channels different characters from popular culture. From books to movies to memes, there’s a wide array of get-ups that go well beyond a conventional crisp blouse and forced smile. Characters from Harry Potter, Toy Story, and Bob’s Burgers are just a few of the personas that these young people take on. Others imitate folks in real life, such as Donald Trump's hair and his use of HUGEEE. There's even one student who dressed as the viral “girl goes crazy for cotton candy” meme.

Many of the participating students shared their funny school ID pictures on Twitter using the hashtag #NFID18. Their tweets, which introduce their characters, are the icing on the cake to this creative custom.

Each year, the senior class of North Farmington High School in Farmington Hills, Michigan partakes in a quirky tradition.

They don hilarious costumes for funny school ID pictures.

From books to movies to memes, the imaginative costumes are a fun way to start the students' final year.

devil’s grass

Suko

This is so good.

lustfulpasiphae:

lustfulpasiphae:

She had spent years telling her neighbors to stay off the grass.

When she was younger, she had the energy to chase the neighborhood children away, shooing them back to the relative safety of the sidewalk, where the tangled rhizomes made futile forays. She would keep it trimmed, tamed, beaten back.

It had been months since she had been able to make the proper sacrifices, though. The green blades were creeping out across the cement, throwing out runners, inching along the cracks where any bit of soil lingered. It was insatiable, relentless. She simply didn’t have the strength to fight it anymore, not since the stroke.

Someday it would take over the neighborhood.

She had told them. Warned them.

It was called devil’s grass for a reason.

The young man reminded her of a man she had known a long time ago, before her hips ached with arthritis, before her hair had gone steel grey and her hands gnarled like old tree roots. He was polite, respectful, but had a cheeky sense of humor that made her worn old heart glad. And he wasn’t afraid of the grass.

The first time he came to see her, he stopped by her dented mailbox, looking at the black-eyed susans and sandsburrs eking out an existence in the shade of the dry-rotted post, looking at the seeded heads of the grass swaying. The first time she saw him, all golden and sun-warmed and fit, she thought he was a ghost.

Then he asked about the grass, and she thought maybe he was from that homeowner’s whatsit that liked to meddle in her affairs. What did they have to do with her home, she wanted to know. Her daddy bought this house, paid it off in blood and sweat and tears when she was just a little thing, left it to her along with the grass and the things in the cellar and the woods out back that never did settle be it night or day.

She shook her cane at him, the carved figures smooth under her fingers after all these years. But he just smiled, shook his head, ma’am’d her politely, and asked if she wanted him to cut the lawn for her.

She sat back, hands clasped over the head of her cane, ruminating on that for a bit while he had stood there, still on the sidewalk, well back from the runners spilling over into the verge. Almost like he knew.

Two days later, the grass was tamed, trimmed, beaten back again. It wasn’t happy about it. She heard the way it rustled, the creeping rhizomes digging deep into the soil, seeking the bones and old dead things deep below. Reaching for strength.

She hummed from the porch, an old song, a secret song. It wasn’t much, but the rustling quieted for a bit.

Sometimes he brought his dog with him. The dog would come to the porch and lay by her feet in her worn slippers, rest his head on top of them. They got cold sometimes, after the stroke. He was a good dog.

When he showed up one day to battle the grass, he had a cut lip and a scrape on his forehead. They were clean and tended, but still raw. The grass swayed eagerly at the scent of blood, and she clutched her cane, humming, toneless, songs of protection, songs of stillness, songs of silence.

That was the first time she heard him sing. Songs of praise, golden like the sun, like his hair, songs that made her heart soar, made it fly.

He made her remember impossible things.

The dog came and sat on the porch at her feet, and she watched the grass surrender before the song.

Even old songs, at the ends of their age, had power. The moon was dark when they came for him again, the ones who had hurt him.

She was on her porch in the deep shadow, hands clasped on her cane, rubbing a familiar groove in the carved figures. The details of the lion’s mane were smooth, silky, under the ball of her thumb. She bided, waited, patient as she had ever been.

They never knew why they turned onto her walkway, the cement bone white in the faint light of stars, cracked and pitted with age. The creeping runners of the grass reached, seized, coaxed, hungry and insatiable.

Clouds obscured the sky, even the faint light of stars, until it was done.

The grass had grown two lengths the next morning, seed heads all ariot in an unseasonable breeze.

It would have to be cut again, tamed and trimmed and beaten back.

She smiled down at the dog, who had been at her feet when she woke, damp with dew, feeling the ache of the night’s work in her joints.

The dog gave her a toothy grin around the long bone in his jaws, went back to gnawing contentedly.

She waited for the young man to come and battle the grass.

Estonian Artist Uses a Chainsaw to Carve a Fantastical Dragon Bench

by Jessica Stewart
Suko

I want one! Guess I better learn to use a chainsaw.

Igor Loskutow Chainsaw Art

Estonian artist Igor Loskutow is an award winning master of chainsaw art. Based in Germany, he's part of the Husqvarna chainsaw sculpture team, which travels to events across Europe in order to show off their cutting skills. One of Luskutow's newest pieces, an incredible dragon bench, is a masterpiece of the art form.

It's incredible to see how the bench takes shape, with the fantastical animal's long body forming the seat and its head and tail curling around either side. The wings are especially impressive, as one wraps around as the back rest and the other curves around the sides in a dramatic fashion. Loskutow's newest creation is now at home next to a butcher shop, but this isn't his first aim at taming a dragon into seating.

In early 2017 he created another dragon bench, this one with the head carved from a red tinged wood. The fiery red head offsets beautifully against the rest of the mocha colored bench, and continues to show off the chainsaw artist's cutting skills. From incredibly thin, soft lines to bigger cuts used to create the overall shape, the benches only further prove why Luskutow won the 2015 Huskycup World Title for his work.

Igor Loskutow is an incredible chainsaw artist who uses the heavy duty tool to create fantastical sculptures like this clever dragon bench.

Dancers and Photographers Come Together for Incredible Spontaneous Photo Shoots

by Jessica Stewart
Suko

The forms are so lovely. What strength and poise!

What happens when you gather world class dancers, photographers, and social media influencers in dramatic settings across the United States? #CamerasandDancers. For the past few years, Jacob Jonas The Company has been hosting monthly Instameets with social influencers, allowing dancers and photographers to spontaneously collaborate to stunning effect.

#CamerasandDancers recently held its 30th meet up and has held events everywhere from the Getty Museum in Los Angeles to the New York Public Library. Over the course of three to four hours, the artists collaborate on a portfolio of images that are then shared across Instagram and other online platforms. “As a choreographer and activist for dance, I wanted to do something that would simply make the art form more visible online,” choreographer Jacob Jonas shares with us via email. “These photos carry the weight of peer-to-peer endorsement and keep dance relevant and connected to a younger demographic through the reach of the social influencers.”

And for institutions, it's a win win situation, as the visibility helps invite new thinking about the well-worn spaces and pushes them into the homes of a new audience. “To see so many dancing bodies, moving among the reels of film and archival boxes that store the collective history of dance, was a truly remarkable thing to witness and is a moment I'm eager to explore again in our space,” shares Linda Murray, Dance Curator, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.

#CamerasandDancers is a monthly Instameet that brings dancers, photographers, and influencers together in incredible settings to create spontaneous dance imagery.

Well this makes the song much more interesting.

ghostabletoastables:

when i was very small i assumed this song was about some lady who literally kept a human face in a jar by the door and since father mckenzie buried her that meant that he also killed her and basically i thought eleanor rigby was about zombies until i was like 12 years old

This is so much better than anything I could’ve envisioned listening to the song.

Love their reactions. They aren’t worried about being emasculated, they aren’t insecure, they are just genuinely impressed that she’s lifting like a beast!

Suko

I'm totally the third one but I think they left out some critical options
*make your own tomato paste so you can have 6 oz.
*add in an extra 1/2 oz of tomato paste from the stash in your freezer that you created for exactly this sort of situation.

prokopetz:

Cooking Personality Test - the recipe you’re making calls for six ounces of tomato paste, but you can only get tomato paste in 5.5oz cans. You:

  • Crack open a second can and skim 10% off the top
  • Use one can and adjust the proportions of everything else accordingly
  • Use one can and don’t adjust the rest because it’s really not that critical
  • Find the least common multiple between 5.5 and 6 and make eleven batches at once
  • Give up and order pizza

Pretty much.

I was thinking of observing stars to verify Einstein's theory of relativity again, but I gotta say, that thing is looking pretty solid at this point.

Suko

It got better.

littlelions101:

adramofpoison:

dondaario:

so if in the soulmate au the very first words your soulmate ever says to you are tattooed somewhere on your body since the day you are born imagine having something like ‘man I cant believe dumbledore died’ tattooed on you. imagine being spoiled for a book series that doesnt even exist yet. imagine worrying about this dumbledore guy your whole childhood while not knowing who he is. imagine knowing dumbledore dies before jk rowling even thinks about it.

Everybody go home, this is my favorite soulmate au

So you finally find your soulmate. After years of knowing that dumbledore dies and the entire franchise being ruined, you find him. You’re in the theatre, dumbledore is dead and you hear it. ‘Man I can’t believe dumbledore died’ by a guy walking right by you and in you’re rage you shout ‘You! You’re the one!’ The guy stops, looks at you, his own arm to read the words, then back at you and he says, “That’s not really how I imagined that being said”

Ridiculous yet effective ways to deal with Executive Dysfunction

Suko

I don't think I have executive dysfunction and I still do stuff like this. Totally gotta do what works for you. I organize via piles.

kasettetape:

kestrel-tree:

Dealing with executive dysfunction and ADHD becomes so much easier when you stop trying to do things the way you feel like you should be able to do them (like everyone else) and start finding ways that actually work for you, no matter how “silly” or “unnecessary” they seem.

For years my floor was constantly covered in laundry. Clean laundry got mixed in with dirty and I had to wash things twice, just making more work for myself. Now I just have 3 laundry bins: dirty (wash it later), clean (put it away later), and mystery (figure it out later). Sure, theoretically I could sort my clothes into dirty or clean as soon as I take them off and put them away straight out of the dryer, but realistically that’s never going to be a sustainable strategy for me.

How many garbage bins do you need in a bedroom? One? WRONG! The correct answer is one within arms reach at all times. Which for me is three. Because am I really going to get up to blow my nose when I’m hyperfocusing? NO. In allergy season I even have an empty kleenex box for “used tissues I can use again.” Kinda gross? Yeah. But less gross than a snowy winter landscape of dusty germs on my desk.

I used to be late all the time because I couldn’t find my house key. But it costs $2.50 and 3 minutes to copy a key, so now there’s one in my backpack, my purse, my gym bag, my wallet, my desk, and hanging on my door. Problem solved.

I’m like a ninja for getting pout the door past reminder notes without noticing. If I really don’t want to forget something, I make a physical barrier in front of my door. A sticky note is a lot easier to walk past than a two foot high cardboard box with my wallet on top of it.

Executive dysfunction is always going to cause challenges, but often half the struggle is trying to cope by pretending not to have executive dysfunction, instead of finding actual solutions.

Wow actual stuff about executive dysfunction on here, this is so helpful thank you
