Galadriel for this challenge.

They were clad wholly in white; and the hair of the Lady was of deep gold… but no sign of age was upon them, unless it were in the depths of their eyes; for these were keen as lances in the starlight, and yet profound, the wells of deep memory.

Prince Fielder Is Getting Fat-Shamed

“He's overweight, injured, and has declining stats when he should be in his prime,” is just one of the many judgmental tweets about Major League Baseball player Prince Fielder of the Texas Rangers — this one courtesy of “The Paleo Manifesto” author John Durant, who shared that opinion with his nearly 16,000 followers.

LeBron James’s next big move—as a TV producer

by Jason Lynch
firehose

'executive producing the upcoming Starz comedy series Survivor’s Remorse'

' It also delves into the ties to the rough neighborhood Cam came from (Dorchester, Massachusetts'

Michael Jordan and LeBron James

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA—In announcing his return to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, superstar basketball player LeBron James said, “I’m not having a press conference or a party. After this, it’s time to get to work.”

And he wasn’t just talking about his basketball career. Like NBA icons Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal before him, James is also turning his attention to Hollywood, executive producing the upcoming Starz comedy series Survivor’s Remorse.

The Entourage-like show, which premieres Oct. 4, centers around Cam Calloway (Jessie T. Usher), an undrafted free agent who after four years in professional basketball, signs a multimillion deal and makes it big for the first time. He moves to Atlanta, with his family in tow. It also delves into the ties to the rough neighborhood Cam came from (Dorchester, Massachusetts, outside Boston), and his guilt about making it big when his childhood pals did not.

The otherwise-occupied James wasn’t in attendance when the cast and producers discussed the show on July 11 at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour. “He may be in the HR office going through his paperwork for his new job,” joked his manager and business partner Maverick Carter, who developed the idea for the show with executive producer Tom Werner (The Cosby ShowThat ‘70s Show), with input from James.

Despite the show’s obvious parallels to the life of its superstar producer, “this is not a show about LeBron James. This is a fictional show,” said executive producer Mike O’Malley, who admitted that they changed the original script, which was originally set in Cleveland (near James’s Ohio hometown of Akron), to distance themselves from those comparisons.

While he was involved with the development process early on, James isn’t hands-on during the actual production of Survivor’s Remorse. “From the beginning, he was involved in the overall concept of the show,” said Carter. James won’t be appearing in the series but, said Usher, he “adds authenticity to the show as well [as] someone who is actually living the life.”

James will go before the camera for director Judd Apatow’s next comedy, Trainwreck, which will come out next summer. But despite his love for film and TV (“I have a deep passion for the amazing television being created right now,” he said last year, adding that his favorite TV shows include Boardwalk Empire, Scandal and 24), his involvement in these two projects doesn’t mean he’s laying groundwork for a post-NBA career in Hollywood.

“It’s not necessarily a concerted effort, but it’s something that he enjoys from doing commercials and things,” said Carter. “I don’t think he’s going to pick up and move out [to Los Angeles] and start doing this.” James’s focus on basketball, Carter added, “is definitely number one, by a long shot.”

#teamcake

I was looking around for the “how to fold your Hermès Scarf” book and stumbled across this.

A couple/few years back I spotted a period Bundt pan on eBay and snagged it. It came along with its original recipe book (dating is difficult as there’s no explicit copyright info on it, but it has a Zip code on the front cover, which means 1963 at the earliest).

"Unusual Old World" recipes… Yeah. Potica: interesting. The Coffee Cake (Jewish Origin*) is just fine. The Sausage Cake is, well, ingredientially conflicted and I don’t think I’ll be serving it.

As for the fourth image, though, and that first recipe… I’m just now becoming able to breathe again. What can I say? It was in some ways a more innocent time.

*Is it just me or does this somehow seem vaguely like a warning notice of some kind? (eyeroll)

Submission - Historical Map, Boston Elevated Railway System,...

Submission - Historical Map, Boston Elevated Railway System, 1932

Submitted by emotingviamemes, who says:

This is an old Boston Elevated Railway Company map from a user guide I purchased at the wonderful Ward Maps store in Cambridge, MA. It’s a lovely relic of its time! The rest of the guide gives transit directions to landmarks and points of interest. I’m not exactly sure why the modern day Blue and Red Lines are the same color on here, unless some color had faded with age.

——

Transit Maps says:

Yep, it’s a beauty alright!

I’ve given up trying to comprehensively date Boston maps (one of my readers always comes up with more accurate dating than me!), so I’m just putting it in the rough range of 1928 to 1938, mainly based on the existence of the Atlantic Avenue Elevated line.

Note: Steven Beaucher from Ward Maps has identified this as the 1932 map for me (see, I told you someone else would know!).

Regarding the route colours as shown, I’d just say that it was done in an effort to minimise the number of colours used in the print job. The “yellow” and “red” lines on this map run concurrently with each other between Haymarket and North Station and thus need some visual differentiation to make them easy to follow, while the two “blue” routes only cross other routes and don’t interact with each other, so they can safely use the same colour. Assignation of route colours back in those early days of transit map design was quite random: even early pre-Beck London Underground maps could never really decide which line got which colour. And remember that Boston’s modern route colours were only defined in the late 1960s when the famous “spider map” was introduced.

Seattle utility wants $17,500 refund after failure to scrub negative search results

by Cyrus Farivar

Seattle’s publicly-owned electrical utility, City Light, is now demanding a refund for the $17,500 that it paid to Brand.com in a botched effort to boost the online reputation of its highly-paid chief executive, Jorge Carrasco.

The project was concocted by the CEO’s chief of staff, Sephir Hamilton. In an interview with Ars, Hamilton said that the agency may even file a lawsuit to enforce this refund.

"We're leaving our options open,” he said. “I hope that they'll see that what we signed up for was not the service that they delivered. We were sold one bill of goods and we were given another.”

Flashback Friday: Spoiler alert! Spoilers actually increase enjoyment of stories.

by Seriously Science

THANKS, SCIENCE

Photo: cheezburger

Are you one of those people who avoids spoilers at all costs, even going so far as to block people from your Facebook and Twitter feeds who give away the plot of Game of Thrones? If so, listen up — contrary to what you might think, it turns out that avoiding spoilers might not be worth the trouble. According to this study, “spoilers may allow readers to organize developments, anticipate the implications of events, and resolve ambiguities that occur in the course of reading.” In other words, spoilers can actually make you enjoy the story more because you know where the author is going and can appreciate the hints that are given along the way. Whether, as the authors suggest, “birthday presents [might also be] better when wrapped in cellophane” remains to be determined.

Story spoilers don’t spoil stories.

“The enjoyment of fiction through books, television, and movies may depend, in part, on the psychological experience of suspense. Spoilers give away endings before stories begin, and may thereby diminish suspense and impair enjoyment; indeed, as the term suggests, readers go to considerable lengths to avoid prematurely discovering endings … However, people’s ability to reread stories with undiminished pleasure, and to read stories in which the genre strongly implies the ending, suggests that suspense regarding the outcome may not be critical to enjoyment and may even impair pleasure by distracting attention from a story’s relevant details and aesthetic qualities … We conducted three experiments, each with stories from a different, distinct genre, to test the effects of spoilers on enjoyment.

…Writers use their artistry to make stories interesting, to engage readers, and to surprise them, but we found that giving away these surprises makes readers like stories better. This was true whether the spoiler revealed a twist at the end (e.g., that the condemned man’s daring escape is just a fantasy as the rope snaps taut around his neck) or solved the crime (e.g., Poirot discovers that the apparent target of attempted murder was in fact the perpetrator). It was also true when the spoiler was more poetic, as when frisky adolescents watching a couple struggle with a baby are revealed to be previewing their own futures, and the couple glimpsing their own pasts. In all these types of stories, spoilers may allow readers to organize developments, anticipate the implications of events, and resolve ambiguities that occur in the course of reading….Erroneous intuitions about the nature of spoilers may persist because individual readers are unable to compare spoiled and unspoiled experiences of a novel story. Other intuitions about suspense may be similarly wrong: Perhaps birthday presents are better when wrapped in cellophane, and engagement rings when not concealed in chocolate mousse.”

The Confederacy Almost Had a Helicopter During the Civil War

The American Civil War was probably the first truly modern war in that technology was so important. The military use of balloons, the development of steam-powered ironclads and monitors (as well as the invention of the gun turret), rifled cannons of unprecedented size, submarines, guncotton and telegraphy were all invented or perfected during the war. brought about great advances in the use of technology in warfare. The only thing that was missing was heavier-than-air flight.

look at this fucking vblog-to-movie role deal

Anna

So remember that really excellent, feel-good “makeup tutorial” we showed you a couple of days ago, “How To Put On Your Face?” Anna Akana, the YouTuber behind the video, is about to find her face on an even bigger screen – one at a theater near you.

Deadline is reporting that Akana will be joining Sally Field and New Girl‘s Max Greenfield in Michael Showalter’s Hello, My Name is Doris. The indie comedy, written by Showalter and Laura Terruso, follows Field as Doris, as she attempts to romantically persue her younger co-worker (Greenfield). Akana will feature Akana as a blogger who fascinates Doris.

Akana’s YouTube channel has nearly a million subscribers and over sixty million views, and “How To Put On Your Face” has racked up 1.5 million views alone in under a month. Akana is one of TMS’s own Victoria McNally‘s favorite YouTubers because of her rad and empowering videos (like the one below). Since Akana is, you know, actually an actress (and not just a “personality”), we have a feeling the jump to the big screen is going to go very well for her.
