Newswire: Geena Davis joins the cast of Grey’s Anatomy

by William Hughes
firehose

Geena Davis!

ABC announced this week that Geena Davis has been cast for “a major guest arc” on the network’s long-running medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy. Davis will, shockingly, be playing “a surgeon at the hospital,” dashing hopes that this might finally be the crossover between Grey’s Anatomy and ABC’s other 2005-premiering female-lead drama, Commander-In-Chief, that America has been waiting nearly a decade to enjoy. Sure, it’s technically possible that Davis’ character from that show, President Mackenzie Allen, became a surgeon in the intervening years. But sadly, the facts here don’t seem to bear that scenario out.

“Do I call you President Doctor, or Doctor President?!” Meredith Grey won’t demand, tears in her eyes. And Presi-doc Geena Davis won’t lean down and whisper in her ear, all while giving that million-watt Geena Davis smile to the cameras, “There’s no crying in surgery.” A missed ...

Shark Week Lied to Scientists to Get Them to Appear in "Documentaries"

Discovery Channel's "Shark Week" is misleading the public again this year with several documentaries. So why are scientists allowing themselves to be featured in these pseudoscience disasters? There's a simple reason: Shark Week producers have been lying to them.

All 30 MLB stadiums, ranked by beer choices

by Rodger Sherman
firehose

stupid fucking New York City

The Washington Post decided to find which stadiums in baseball have the best beer. This is an opportunity for us to laugh at the Yankees.

We can't think of anything better than taking in a baseball game on a hot summer's day with a nice, cold beer in our hand. Well, maybe if that beer didn't cost $13, but, well, you can't get everything.

The enterprising souls at the Washington Post decided to look at the beer selections team-by-team across Major League Baseball to see which stadium has the best beer, They find that the average MLB team offers 50 beers from 25 different breweries somewhere in their stadium, with the Reds offering a whopping 130 options over the course of a season.

They ranked teams by quality of beer -- beers ranked "very good" or better on BeerAdvocate -- locality of beers -- beers from the same state as the team -- and uniqueness of beers -- beers only available at that stadium. It's fascinating, and you should give it a look.

Findings:

The Mariners take first:

mariners

They don't have the best beer, just very, very good beer, and a lot of different types from close to the stadium, not surprising considering the craft beer scene in the Pacific Northwest.

The Yankees are in last:

yankees

They offer next to no beers, not a single beer cracking the "very good" threshhold, and despite a rash of New York-based craft brews, nothing local. Another reason for everybody to hate the Yankees.

Anyway, head over to the Post and read all that stuff. It's fun to play around with, if you are a fan of baseball and getting drunk.

It's Surprisingly Easy To Build A Sam's Club On A Native American Heritage Site

firehose

#nevergo

The people of Oxford, Alabama have waited more than four years to shop at Sam’s Club, the Walmart subscription mega-store. The economy delayed construction. At least one sinkhole opened up on the site. Then there was the Native American mound, which the city bulldozed to obtain fill dirt for the new store. Since then, officials have largely succeeded in sweeping the matter under the rug — or, more realistically, under the Sam’s Club.

The Top Cocktail Bars in Edinburgh

by Camper English
firehose

"Upstairs is a window advertising Panda & Sons as a barber shop, so that's a great indication that there is a speakeasy bar within. A rather large one, in fact, with a couple of spacious rooms filled with tables and chairs, though I don't think they serve food.

Here is where all the bells and whistles go into cocktail service. I had a drink served in a tin can. Another one is a whisky and soda that comes as two drinks in a mini-basket. I saw a drink go out with a smoked cocktail served under a bell jar. There are more pictures on the website as well. I like big garnish and I cannot lie."

sold; let's go to Edinburgh

Last week I was in Edinburgh, Scotland and was given a grand tour of the top cocktail bars in the city.

The Gist:

  • Edinburgh looks really quite big in person (there is a castle on a cliff, after all) but you can walk from one side to the other in a matter of minutes- so it's great for barhopping.
  • Bramble, Lucky Liquor, and Last Word are owned by one company and are bar-focussed: They do not serve food beyond bar snacks.
  • Bon Vivant, Bon Vivant Stockbridge, and Devil's Advocate (along with the liquor store Bon Vivant's Companion and coffee shop Pep & Fodder) are owned by another company and are more like pubs that serve full meals along with the drinks.
  • Panda & Sons and Heads and Tales are the independents.
  • There are plenty of traditional pubs and beer bars too, of course. They're good for hydration stops in between cocktails.

Edinburgh Castle2

The Bon Vivant Old Town and Bon Vivant Stockbridge

The original Bon Vivant in Old Town was the winner of the 2014 Best International Restaurant Bar at Tales of the Cocktail; kind of a big deal. Without a huge sign or decor that screams for attention, it's the type of pub you could walk right past without noticing - except if you recognize the Tales award in the window.

Inside there is a bar on the left with the rest of the space filled out with wooden tables and chairs. It has a super casual feel to it, yet its operations seem to be firing on all cylinders: The staff are friendly, hip, and knowledgeable; the menu is understated but the food is creative and elegant (with both small bites and larger meal options); they have a huge wine and champagne by-the-glass list for a small bar; and the cocktails that I tried were great as well.

The Stockbridge location (that's not another city; just another neighborhood with lots of gourmet food shops) seems smaller but even more comfortable and welcoming, with a bar down the middle and tables in the front and back. Owner Stuart McCluskey described it as his Cheers since he lives closeby. The bar is also close to the Last Word.

Next door to the original Bon Vivant is the Bon Vivant's Companion, a beer, wine, liquor and barware shop. There is a downstairs room for tastings and classes, where I gave a talk to local bartenders about (wait for it....) ice.

Devil's Advocate

This bar is more modern and design-focused, yet located in a very old building - a former pump station on a narrow, winding, steep street called a "close." The steepness of the street allows for two levels - a top one with a small (soon expanding) outdoor patio, and a downstairs with tall ceilings and a sexy wall of booze displayed behind the bar. It's all rock and brick walls, wood tables, black iron rails, and slate-colored wood accents that are reclaimed 300-year-old beams from a former building across the street.

The whisky selection is prominently featured and I had the feeling that this bar is made for the well-heeled set, though given its location it gets tons of tourists popping in for a refresher as well.

Cocktails on the menu are divided into small sections of Prescriptions, Re-Fresher, Forgotten, Sours & Flips, Digestives, and Sippers. Something for everybody.

Bramble

The last time I was in Edinburgh was 2007. Bramble was already open but I learned of it too late to visit so this one was long overdue... but of course I got there 10 minutes to closing time so I was only there for one (terrific) cocktail. This place has been nominated or won just about every accolade in the bar business over the years in between.

Bramble is a bare bones bar down a set of stairs from the street, with a couple small rooms and a great cocktail menu.

Lucky Liquor Co.

I ended up in this bar three times within 24 hours, so that's a pretty good sign. Lucky Liquor's bar area, located at the back of a narrow room, has that strange energy of a kitchen at a house party - everybody gravitates there despite plenty of seating elsewhere in the venue.

Besides the small bar room are a couple of tables on the sidewalk, a narrow middle room, then a larger downstairs area with more tables.

On top of the bar was a Randall, a "filter system that allows the user to run draft beer through a chamber of whole leaf hops, spices, herbs, fruit, etc. so that the alcohol in the beer strips the flavor from whatever you add and puts it in the beer” that was created by Dogfish Head beer. But instead of using it for hopping beer on tap, they used it to make a hopped Negroni.

Other unseen equipment included a centrifuge, which they used to clarify scotch bonnet pepper juice served in a miniature Tabasco bottle which you'd add drops of to a drink that's between a Gin Martini and a Red Snapper. They also own a rotovap. I believe these pieces of high-tech equipment make ingredients for all their bars.

The Last Word Cocktail Saloon

My last cocktail in Edinburgh was appropriately sampled at the Last Word Saloon. It is another small neighborhood bar, but one with Green Chartreuse on tap. Like every place I went in Edinburgh, the bartenders were lovely hosts.

There I had a version of the Derby cocktail made with "rotovapple" syrup and Fernet-Branca. It was delicious.

Heads & Tales

This bar just opened in June 2014 and is so very pretty. The main room features the bar, some tables, and windows through which gin stills are highlighted. There is another room for seating, and then several snugs that can seat groups, built into cave-like rooms. One of them has a piano in it.

The bar has a gin theme, with a menu divided into gin drinks and "not so much gin." The gin stills on display (one pot still and one tiny column) aren't only for that purpose - they are functioning and are/will produce Edinburgh Gin

I'm not sure if many of the drinks are served with fancy preparations, but the one I ordered came wrapped in a giant, edible pound note. It tasted mostly like paper but the drink was great.

This was my first visit to Edinburgh in about 7 years. It had an outsized cocktail scene for a small city even back then and I'm psyched to see the venues have changed but the drink quality has only improved. Thanks to all the great bartenders there for hosting me.

Bellevue Police says Marshawn Lynch cleared. Was not involved in incident.

— Bob Condotta (@bcondotta) August 14, 2014

Police are trying to determine whether Seattle Seahawks Marshawn Lynch was involved in an assault in Bellevue, Wash. early Sunday morning, according to Chris Daniels. Lynch is under investigation but has not been arrested.

Police responded to a report of assault and property damage at a downtown Bellevue apartment complex at 2:30 a.m. local time on Sunday, where they were told by an unnamed woman that Lynch was the suspect, according to KOMOnews.com. Police said they are still trying to determine whether Lynch was indeed involved and have not spoken to him yet.

"The Bellevue Police Department is in the process of gathering the facts of this alleged incident, including verifying whether or not Mr. Lynch was in fact involved," police said in a press release.

The incident did not involve domestic violence or sexual assault, according to the release.

Lynch recently ended his holdout with the Seahawks, reporting to training camp last week. He did not play in the team's preseason loss to the Denver Broncos last Thursday.

An anonymous reader writes Google has announced it is backing plans to build and operate a new high-speed internet Trans-Pacific cable system called "FASTER." In addition to Google, the $300 million project will be jointly managed by China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, Global Transit, KDDI, and SingTel, with NEC as the system supplier. FASTER will feature the latest high-quality 6-fiber-pair cable and optical transmission technologies. The initial design capacity is expected to be 60Tb/s (100Gb/s x 100 wavelengths x 6 fiber-pairs), connecting the US with two locations in Japan.

British inventor Colin Furze demonstrates how to transform sheets of metal through hydroforming by using a pressure washer to fill them up like a water balloon. Furze makes all sorts of interesting shapes, including a cone used to amplify the engine sounds of a riding mower and a square resembling a small metal pillow.

We’ve kind of made…a metal pillow… Check that out, ladies. It’s quite cool. I don’t know what you’d use it for, but…

Furze has made a number of cool projects in the past, including a pair of automatically extending Wolverine claws.

We Have a Rape Gif Problem and Gawker Media Won't Do Anything About It

firehose

TW: rape, harassment

Jezebel's editorial staff is in open rebellion against Gawker's tech team

"None of us are paid enough to deal with this on a daily basis."

Working at Gawker Media is a dream job for many of the women on staff here at Jezebel. This is a place that takes chances on developing writers, that has always stood behind us no matter what. But it's time the company had its feet held to the fire.

For months, an individual or individuals has been using anonymous, untraceable burner accounts to post gifs of violent pornography in the discussion section of stories on Jezebel. The images arrive in a barrage, and the only way to get rid of them from the website is if a staffer individually dismisses the comments and manually bans the commenter. But because IP addresses aren't recorded on burner accounts, literally nothing is stopping this individual or individuals from immediately signing up for another, and posting another wave of violent images (and then bragging about it on 4chan in conversations staffers here have followed, which we're not linking to here because fuck that garbage). This weekend, the user or users have escalated to gory images of bloody injuries emblazoned with the Jezebel logo. It's like playing whack-a-mole with a sociopathic Hydra.

This practice is profoundly upsetting to our commenters who have the misfortune of starting their day with some excessively violent images, to casual readers who drop by to skim Jezebel with their morning coffee only to see hard core pornography at the bottom of a post about Michelle Obama, and especially to the staff, who are the only ones capable of removing the comments and are thus, by default, now required to view and interact with violent pornography and gore as part of our jobs.

None of us are paid enough to deal with this on a daily basis.

Higher ups at Gawker are well aware of the problem with this feature of Kinja (our publishing platform, in case you're new here). We receive multiple distressed emails from readers every time this happens, and have been forwarding them to the architects of Kinja and to higher ups on Gawker's editorial side for months. Nothing has changed. During the last staff meeting, when the subject was broached, we were told that there were no plans to enable the blocking of IP addresses, no plans to record IP addresses of burner accounts. Moderation tools are supposedly in development, but change is not coming fast enough. This has been going on for months, and it's impacting our ability to do our jobs.

In refusing to address the problem, Gawker's leadership is prioritizing theoretical anonymous tipsters over a very real and immediate threat to the mental health of Jezebel's staff and readers. If this were happening at another website, if another workplace was essentially requiring its female employees to manage a malevolent human pornbot, we'd report the hell out of it here and cite it as another example of employers failing to take the safety of its female employees seriously. But it's happening to us. It's been happening to us for months. And it feels hypocritical to continue to remain silent about it.

Over the years, this company has undergone so many major changes that it would be easy to lose track of them all. But even in the midst of seemingly constant overhaul, Gawker has always been a place that would really go to the mat for its writers, a place that offered unmatched freedom to smart people with something to say. It's time that Gawker Media applied that principle to promoting our freedom to write without being bombarded with porn and gore. We're real, we're here, and we matter.

A Brief List of Standard Answers For the Amazon/Hachette Thing

by John Scalzi
firehose

'You can construct in your mind a world where there are the tough and scrappy self-published authors on one side of a battle and the posh and pampered traditionally published authors on the other, and pretend to set them against one another, like flabby, middle-aged Pokemon. But I think that’s kind of stupid and I’m not obliged to live in that particular fantasy world. Nor do I believe that the successes of other writers take away from my own. It’s not actually a zero-sum game where only one publishing model (and the authors who use it) will survive and the rest are eaten by weasels, or whatever. The world is large enough to have authors publishing one way, or another, or by some combination of various methods.

And none of that, mind you, has anything to do with Amazon and Hachette negotiating with each other. Trying to conflate the two suggests you’re not actually paying attention.'

Because it will be useful to do this, to refer people to later: Various complaints/comments/questions about the Amazon/Hachette negotiations and my commentary on it, that I’ve seen online, or have been sent to me via e-mail/social media are below, paraphrased, with my responses. Ready? Here we go.

Why do you hate Amazon?

I don’t hate Amazon. I’m in business with Amazon. They publish many of my audiobooks via their Audible subsidiary, and they sell a lot of my electronic and printed books. I’ve also been an Amazon Prime user since the program started and buy tons of stuff from them.

Then you’re a hypocrite for saying terrible things about Amazon!

If by “a hypocrite” you mean “someone publicly noting the company’s increasingly odd public tactics in its negotiations with Hachette,” then yes. Otherwise, no. I’ve been very clear what my position on Amazon is, to wit: It’s a self-interested corporation, doing what self-interested corporations do. This is in itself neither good nor evil. Its particular public actions are open for comment and criticism.

Why do you love Hachette?

I don’t love Hachette. I’m in business with Hachette through its UK imprint Gollancz; it’s published two of my books in the UK. Gollancz has done well enough for me. I don’t feel anything that could be construed as “loyalty” to Hachette therein, any more than I feel “loyalty” to Amazon for publishing my audiobooks.

But you’re not criticizing Hachette like you’re criticizing Amazon.

Hachette appears (wisely) not to be offering up as many public opportunities for criticism, as regards this particular negotiation with Amazon. If that changes I might comment on their actions, too.

I still think you’re a hypocrite.

That’s fine.

I also think you’re just a tool of big publishing!

As someone who self-published his first two novels online in an era where if people wanted to send you money they had to physically mail it to you, and then later was the president of a writers organization that frequently went toe-to-toe with publishers to defend the rights of writers and to make sure they were fairly compensated for their work, and who has worked with several small and indie publishers over the years, I find your assertion amusing.

Prove me wrong! Say something negative about big publishing!

I’ll say two things: One, its general continued reliance on digital rights management is stupid and insulting to people who buy electronic books; I’m happy Tor and Subterranean Press, who publish the bulk of my North American fiction, don’t use it, and note its lack has done nothing negative regarding my sales. Two, the standard 25% net eBook royalties are too low, everyone knows it, and I suspect in the very near future if large publishers don’t move off of that as a hard line, they’re going to start losing authors — as they should.

I still think you’re a tool of big publishing.

That’s fine.

Why can’t you see that big publishing is doomed?

Probably because I work directly with big publishing on a daily basis and the part of it I work with is full of smart people who are actively figuring out how to make all this stuff work for them. The fact that one my books — The Human Division, which we initially serialized electronically — was formally a research project, from which data was obtained, crunched and studied intensively, suggests to me that the outside-looking-in image of these publishers as cartoon dinosaurs, flailing chaotically, is, in my corner of this world at least, somewhat uninformed.

But [insert Author name here] worked with a big publisher and says they are doomed!

Okay, and? His or her experience may have been different than mine. Bear in mind that authors are not usually perfect reporters — they carry over grudges, loyalties, slights, personal experiences both positive and negative, etc — and that in general, in my experience, and intentionally or otherwise, they tend to universalize their own individual situation.

Are you calling [insert Author name here] a liar?

Only as much as I’m calling myself a liar, since it works that way with me, too. The point to take away here is that maybe you might want to consider the idea that not any one author should be considered the last word on these sorts of things. This is especially true if the author is nursing a grudge, or has an explicit economic interest in a particular publishing model.

But [insert Author name here] sells lots of books!

So do I. Is there a point you have here? (Also, somewhat related, does anyone else see the irony of criticizing certain traditionally published authors — me among them, I will note — as being part of “the 1%” and thus being somewhat clueless to the real world of working authors, while lauding certain self-published authors whose earnings would also put them into the 1%, in terms of author earnings? Seems sketchy logic to me.)

You feel threatened by this new wave of self publishing and that’s why you hate it!

One, it’s not new — please see my notation of having self-published my own novels, the first one 15 years ago now — and two, I don’t particularly feel threatened by it or hate it, no. Why should I?

Because it will doom the way you get published!

You know, at this point I gotta say I’m not exactly concerned that I won’t be able to sell work, regardless of the publishing environment.

New writers are nipping at your heels!

Excellent — I always need new things to read.

Look, here’s the thing: You can construct in your mind a world where there are the tough and scrappy self-published authors on one side of a battle and the posh and pampered traditionally published authors on the other, and pretend to set them against one another, like flabby, middle-aged Pokemon.

Trying to conflate the two suggests you’re not actually paying attention.

You’re smug and obnoxious and condescending.

I’m fine with you thinking that.

I will never buy your work!

Oh, well.

This whole conversation is just you using strawmen to make your own points for yourself!

Hush.

I WILL NOT BE SILENCED.

Fine.

Seriously, though, what do you want out of this?

Me? I want Amazon and Hachette to figure out something that allows both of them to be happy with the outcome — or at least happy enough that they can continue to do business with each other — and for Hachette’s authors to have the same access to Amazon as other authors currently have. I would like for both Amazon and Hachette to have economic models that work nicely for authors, so that everyone makes money and everyone is happy. And as I’ve repeatedly said, I would like authors and everyone else to stop thinking this negotiation is about an epic clash of cultures, and see it for what it is: Two companies trying to maneuver for their own economic advantage.

But it is an epic clash of cultures!

Maybe you need to get out more.

I have a complaint not addressed in this entry!

That’s what the comment thread is for.
