Yasiel Puig met a pug we can assume is named Yasiel Pug

by Rodger Sherman

It's like the Yalta Conference but for the baseball internet in 2014.

For some time, we have known that Yasiel Puig, lovable baseball sensation, has a last name only one letter removed from "pug," the derpy-faced dog breed. It has been photoshopped. However, we have not actually put Yasiel Puig in a room with a pug.

UNTIL NOW

"Last night in Ferguson after 11:00pm CT police were on loudspeaker announcing that anyone..."

Courtney shared this story from Super Opinionated.

“Last night in Ferguson, after 11:00 pm CT, police were on loudspeaker announcing that anyone who was not credentialed media must leave the area. The Amnesty observer delegation decided to leave. They walked to leave the area, which required them to move toward police who were holding guns. The Amnesty observers put their hands up proactively as a sign that they did not hold weapons and were not a threat. A police officer stopped them and told the first three observers to kneel, which they did. The observers explained to an officer that they were human rights observers who were leaving as requested and they were granted passage.”

I’m so upset about what’s happening in Ferguson right now, and I can’t come up with anything thoughtful about it to say, other than I think it’s totally and utterly f’d up. (via dinosaurparty)

Xiaomi (pronounced SHAO-mee) is a complete mystery in the West. We often hear stories about the "Apple of China" and how existing OEMs should be worried, but it's rare to get a look at any actual devices from the company. China is the world's largest smartphone market, and the #1 OEM in China isn't Samsung or Apple—it's Xiaomi. The company was only founded in 2010, but it sold 18.7 million smartphones in 2013. It expects to triple that number this year.

Why—and how—is this startup beating the biggest companies in the world? To discover Xiaomi's secrets and to investigate the state of Android in China, we imported the company's brand new flagship: say hello to the Xiaomi Mi4.

Xiaomi's greatest strength is its execution. A lot of things the company does are not unique, but Xiaomi does a fantastic job of whatever it puts its mind to. So yes, the front of the Mi4 (pronounced mee-four) is basically a big iPhone, but it's also built like an iPhone. A steel frame with chamfered edges, thin bezels, and impeccable construction make this the best Android hardware we've seen all year.

In 2001, two white undercover drug officers shot and killed two black men in the parking lot of a Jack in the Box restaurant, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The officers said the men, who had prior felony convictions in drug and assault cases, tried to escape and drove toward them. However, a federal investigation found that the men were unarmed and that their car had not moved when the officers fired 21 shots into the vehicle, killing both men. That inquiry concluded, however, that the shooting was justified because the officers feared for their lives.

McCulloch refused to prosecute the officers, despite public protests. He said of the dead men, “These guys were bums.”

Protesters also question whether McCulloch can impartially prosecute the Brown case because his policeman father was killed while on duty by an African-American man in 1964. McCulloch was 12. His brother, uncle and cousins all worked for the St. Louis police department.

The AOL Chat Room Monitor Revolt

firehose

'Reddit is an interesting example where people voluntarily fill the same community leader role that Aol’s volunteers did, although they do so with fewer restrictions and more agency. That said, while we don’t expect or believe that Reddit should be sued for back wages, it may suffer from the same problem as Aol: Reddit’s fanatical users may remain devoted only as long as the site still feels, as volunteers once described Aol, like a “community where people got together to get together.” Reddit has struggled to ratchet up revenues, likely because users would rebel against aggressive monetization.

In contrast, Buzzfeed is a so far successful example of getting users to do the same work as employees. Anyone who signs up with BuzzFeed Community can suggest blog post ideas to editors and write posts themselves that editors will decide whether to feature. In exchange for doing the work of BuzzFeed writers, community members are not paid, but they can gain badges and “cat power,” which decides their BuzzFeed Community ranking -- a perfect example of Carr’s thesis that users work in the “attention economy” for companies that profit in the actual cash economy. This contrasts strikingly with YouTube, where users who post popular videos can earn a cut of the advertising dollars, allowing some YouTube celebrities to make a living on the platform.'

In the mid 1990s, when America Online was synonymous with the web, the Internet had not yet achieved its destiny as a place where people gather to share memes, troll articles written by members of an opposing political party, and pursue the Sisyphean goal of inbox zero.

Peter Capaldi Is Already Carrying Doctor Who On His Amazing Shoulders

by Charlie Jane Anders
firehose

spoilers

'the fact that Jenny and Vastra's relationship is explicitly compared to the Doctor's relationship with Clara makes you wonder if the point of the episode is that Clara should really be happy to be treated like a subordinate.'

'The Doctor keeps undermining her — even when she's been utterly awesome, he says that she triumphed over the robots because she was "5'1 and crying." But when she's finally had enough of his meanness, he shows his wounded side and makes her feel sorry for him.'

'instead of the Doctor having to prove himself to the new companion, the whole episode is about Clara needing to prove that she's not intolerant or shallow. She has to prove her worth, even though she's already proved it a dozen times'

'she talks about him in very stalker-ish ways, saying that she's the only one he's not mean to, because he loves her so much. In an episode that's all about the women in the Doctor's life, and which of them can see him for who he is, this is a uniquely creepy coda.'

and yet

'Capaldi's channeling Tom Baker's aggressively weird, baffled-but-rude performance, which is just the best thing ever. Purely for Capaldi's bravura performance, I'm 100 percent excited for Doctor Who all over again.'

Peter Capaldi Is Already Carrying Doctor Who On His Amazing Shoulders

This was a pretty humdrum season Doctor Who season opener for the most part. Except that Peter Capaldi, the new Doctor, is already bringing a marvelously strange energy to the role of the Doctor. Capaldi's presence lent a huge spark to the storyline about Clara having trouble adjusting to the Doctor's new face.

A London rapper is one of “the Beatles” suspected of killing James Foley

by Kabir Chibber
A militant Islamist fighter gestures as he takes part in a military parade along the streets of Syria's northern Raqqa province June 30, 2014. The fighters held the parade to celebrate their declaration of an Islamic "caliphate" after the group captured territory in neighbouring Iraq, a monitoring service said. The Islamic State, an al Qaeda offshoot previously known as Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), posted pictures online on Sunday of people waving black flags from cars and holding guns in the air, the SITE monitoring service said. The British authorities suspect a rapper from London, known as L Jinny, of being one of the ISIL militants who beheaded the journalist James Foley in a video released earlier this week, reports the Independent. Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary is thought to be one of three British militants—dubbed the Beatles—who are guarding hostages near Raqqa, Syria. He has left a macabre trail on social media.

Bary traveled to Syria earlier this year to fight as part of ISIL, which began as militants in the country and declared an Islamic caliphate after taking large swathes of central Iraq in the summer, and came to attention earlier this month for posting a picture of himself on Twitter with one finger in the air and holding a severed head in Raqqa. “Chillin’ with my homie or what’s left of him,” he wrote in the tweet. Britain’s Daily Star posted a censored version of the image, below. (Quartz recently ruminated on the morality of posting images of death.) Bary’s Twitter account has now been shut down.

Bary and his family live in Maida Vale, a fairly prosperous neighborhood in London. His father was extradited from the UK to the US in 2012—along with the more well-known Abu Hamza—after an eight-year legal battle. He was accused of being one of Osama bin Laden’s top lieutenants, organizing a terror cell in London, and playing a role in the attacks on the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998. In a sympathetic interview from 2013, Bary’s mother told The Guardian : “My life, it is just my kids now … but maybe, after 20 years of nothing but anxiety, maybe, maybe, I can say I’m recovering myself … maybe.”

Under the name of L Jinny and Lyricist Jinn, Bary has had songs played on the BBC. His most recent song was posted in March. (Update: The video was removed from YouTube after this piece was initially published.)

“The Beatles” appear to be crueller even than the local jihadists. “They were really rough with” the hostages, a source told NBC News. “Whenever the Beatles showed up, there was some kind of physical beating or torture.” Radicalization of the Muslim population in the UK has been a problem for a long time, most vividly illustrated when four Britons of Pakistani descent killed themselves and 52 innocent people in suicide attacks on the London transport system in July 2005. It appears to be getting worse. In the UK, offences related to Syria—such as financing of terrorism or visiting a training camp—have shot up this year. There were 69 arrests by Scotland Yard in the first six months of the year compared to 25 for the whole of 2013, according to The Independent.

Stop Undersea Volcanism NOW!!!

'designed to manipulate Latin American to migrate North to get trapped in the ice with poor and middle class Americans, as the wealthy elite have the vacated Central Americas all to themselves'

welcome to Portland

More than two million undersea volcanoes are currently erupting, heating and evaporating oceans while over loading them with greenhouse gasses, melting icebergs, lowering sea levels, and reducing pressure off tectonic plates, resulting in Earthquakes creating uplift that causes tsunamis. As the evaporated sea water falls as precipitation temperatures drop, inland glaciers grow, and an ice age ensues.

The media spin and political rhetoric is designed to manipulate Latin American to migrate North to get trapped in the ice with poor and middle class Americans, as the wealthy elite have the vacated Central Americas all to themselves.

Landmark Ruling: Animals Can Legally Be Considered Victims, Just Like Humans

firehose

in Oregon

The Oregon Supreme Court this month passed a landmark ruling that will change the way animals are treated under the law in the state for the better. The ruling will ensure that any animal can be seen as a legal “victim” in a case, affording animals more basic rights to protect them from abuse.
