Exploding Apples FOR SCIENCE: part 2

Previously, in the Test Kitchen of Doom: I made apple dumplings the other night (i.e. cored, peeled apples stuffed with cinnamon sugar and butter, and wrapped in pastry dough), and they blew up. (Adding for clarification: this was not in the microwave — this was in the conventional/fan oven.) It seemed likely that they did this because I forgot to poke any venting holes in them.

So I decided that, in the spirit of scientific investigation, I would make another pair. In one of these I would poke venting holes. The other I would leave identical to the original ones, unvented, as a control.

Here they are before they went into the oven.

image

And here they are afterward:

image

And they both blew up anyway! Granted, the vented one blew up a bit less. But still…

image

…it blew up.

So the message seems to be: Vent your apple dumplings generously.

…I still can’t particularly bring myself to be upset that they blew up. They tasted fabulous. All fluffy and tangy. And I mean, just on general principles… apples and cinnamon sugar and butter… how can you go wrong? But I don’t know that this is a dish I would undertake to serve to guests. Only in certain circles would I feel comfortable bringing something to table that looked so like an Alien egg. Or so oozy and exploded. There’s something exquisitely… organic-looking about these (in the Lovecraftian sense), and it might put some folks off…

Never mind. Now I’m wondering how to wangle caramel into this recipe somehow…

ETA: Now I’m wondering if they would blow up less or more if I turned them so the folded/sealed sides were on the bottoms rather than the tops. Oh gods, I feel more Science coming on…

08 Sep 20:56

Meanwhile, at the nonscientific end of the apple situation...

PM and I were discussing apple pie recipes. This is the one (from Ina Garten / the Barefoot Contessa) that was in play.

Here’s how it looked before the fact…

image

…and after.

(Biteless of course.)  :)

image

I think I need to make another. …But then the raw materials are not exactly lacking.

image

Four pounds down. Sixty or so to go…

Horses are pooping on the field during Sunday Night Football

by James Dator

Working in the NFL is glamorous.

When you choose to have live mascot, sometimes accidents happen. Yes, those kinds of accidents. It's okay though, because the Denver Broncos were prepared with giant snow shovels to use as pooper-scoopers.

Two horses entered, one horse will leave. One horse will leave number two.

You & Me Across The Sea - The Great Collaboration | Indiegogo

by djempirical

djempirical

This is my brother & his fiance.

Why we are asking for help.

We are a soon-to-be husband and wife team with a shared love of the arts. We operate a small gallery, Shrewdness of Apes, in Covington, Kentucky where we create and collect works of all sorts. We are asking you to be part of a collaborative art project we dreamed up while planning an adventure. We can't wait to do what we love - make stuff, find stuff, share stuff -  all while traveling across the sea.

We <3

A few things we can't live without: collaboration, tiny things, street art, assignments, taking pictures, flea markets & thrift shops, watercolors, over-the-top tourist attractions, getting mail, meeting people, leaving a mark, DOGS, exploring, nature, finding things, opening packages, memories, experiences, shared stories, rocks, fossils, weird stuff, stuff that looks cool, stuff that's old!

If you like these things too, read on!

Getting the obvious out of the way, we are traveling from Cincinnati, Ohio to Norway, England, Wales and maybe beyond. We'll see where the wind takes us.  In addition to the travel, we want to do the things we love, explore the world, meet people and create.  Our project "You & Me Across the Sea" brings all of these things together. Whether we are scouring markets, visiting tourist attractions or hanging with nature we will be making a mark, taking something with us or leaving something behind. Plus we will be documenting our progress all along the way.

So here's where you come in. In return for your generous contribution you will receive one of our perks. Pick the one that calls out to you, You will be part of our story and have some cool stuff to show for it.

In addition, we will have a gallery show of the art and/or photography associated with this project. You & Me Across the Sea - The Great Collaboration will debut in November 2014. All contributors will be listed along with their pieces, so if having something in an art show is on your bucket list reach out and grab this opportunity!

People are actually pretty great on the whole.

You, you're the best.

While we know there are more important things for you to want to donate to, amazing important causes and innovative products, we believe that wonder and beauty and love make the world go round and we think our project is a perfect example! We will be collaborating with people and creating fun and memorable pieces. We love meeting new people and exploring new places. We love the idea of leaving things behind and imagining who will stumble upon them. We love that something ordinary can, through journey and intent, become rich with memory and bring a smile to the face of the person who looks upon it for years to come. We are excited.

Please check out our perks below to see our project in action. We think we have some great ideas, definitely things we'd grab ourselves, but if you have an idea that you think would work we'd love to hear it. Email us at tosoagallery@gmail.com.

Now for the perks!

Post It

Ever wish you could just send something out into the universe? Do you want to make your mark? With this perk we write your words on a post it and...you guessed it...post it somewhere.

  • "NKOTB rules!"
  • "If you prick us do we not bleed?"
  • "I love you!!!!"
Tell someone something in a way they'd never expect. Don't let Michael <3 Hilary be the only love story out there. Whatever you choose to say, we'll help you say it loud. We will take a photo for you and provide you with the exact location and then leave it there for all the world to see.

Postcards

Often weird, wonderful and abundant throughout the world, we will find, buy and mail a postcard to you while on our trip. Who doesn't like getting mail, especially from a foreign country? This perk includes the purchase of a post card and postage back to your home.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch - A special postcard request is being offered from this unique destination. Known as the town with the longest name in the world, postmarks from this tiny town can be much sought after. Should you choose this specific destination, we will make sure to get a postmark as well. It includes the whole name of the town and since postage often runs out we will be prepared with our own when we visit.

Frogner Park - Our second special request postcard is from Frogner sculpture park in Oslo, Norway. Most of the sculptures are some of the strangest you will see merging many human forms in towers, poses and shapes you wouldn't expect. We suspect there will be many interesting postcards available here and will make a special trip just for you.

Godzilla VS Postcard

This perk takes the tourist postcard and adds a monster! We will pick the best odd, touristy, or funny postcard we can find and add an invasion. Purchase of postcard, monster drawing and foreign postage included.

I'm with stupid =>

Those of you that know us have been waiting for this one. We will use iron on letters to emblazon your phrase of choice on a t-shirt. One of us will wear the shirt in public for at least a few hours. We will document ourselves and the reactions we get. When choosing this perk you will get our favorite photo printed and access to any additional ones online.

Examples include

  • the classic I'm with stupid
  • the entire alphabet
  • Stud Muffin ( Michael's example)
  • Backgammon players haunt my dreams (also Michael's example)
  • Isn't she lovely? (Hilary's example...although it's just asking for some tourist taken photo to show up of me bending over while wearing)

No foul language please. We will be wearing these out in public.

Tiny you on a big trip

This trip sounds great already, right? Do you want to come along? This perk is one way for you to take the trip with us. Send us a photo and we'll print and cut out the subject. We will take this tiny version of you to see all the landmarks we see. At least two photos will be taken showing your tiny self enjoying Norway, Wales and places beyond. Don't worry they will be flattering. Want to send your dog? We want you to too! Any subject allowed. We will document your wee adventure and email these to you when we get back. We will also post them to our facebook page and they will be included in our upcoming show at SoA Gallery, You will also get...wait for it...the TINY YOU. We'll send you back to yourself all fresh from travels.

Somebody's watching me

This perk gets you a googly eyed creature born of a foreign land. We will grab an ordinary object found on our travels and add one of the best accessories, Googly Eyes. We will send you a photo and mail the creature to you all from across the world. A whimsical and a great addition to your family can be yours. We will make every effort to find something that screams out your name.

Mini Masterpiece

Everyone likes original artwork. Well, everyone we like likes original artwork. We love to create and inspiration is all around us. Whether an animal at the zoo, an interesting building, a beautiful sculpture or that waiter at the local restaurant, if you choose this perk we will draw and paint a custom 4 x 6 watercolor inspired by our surroundings and mail it to you while on our trip. Foreign postmarks and stamps along with a special thank you from us included. We will take photos of the work but should you want your piece on display you may bring it on down to the gallery and we'll include the original.

    Magical Monument

Would you love to stumble across something extraordinary and beautiful when you least expect it? In this perk you can make that happen...for someone else. This is a perk of sharing in the best way possible. We will create a scene with you in mind using objects found in the surrounding area. It may be in a forest, a parking lot, a shopping center or a front yard. It might be on the coast or left in a restroom or on the side of the street. Whatever we create we will leave it behind for others to discover and enjoy. We'll take a photo for you and allow you to title the piece either before as an inspiration for us or after as a reflection of the work created.

    Finding 50

Do you love those really interesting photo studies where the photographer catches the most interesting things? So do we! With this perk we will do it 50 times over. With your purchase you can be the instigator. 50 different dogs, 50 different women, 50 different men, 50 different trees, 50 different pubs, 50 different meals, you get the picture (literally). This project will start at the airport in the good old US of A and continue to Norway and England and Wales and perhaps beyond. Each set will be unique to you and your name will be included in the final project. These will be exhibited at SoA Gallery and posted to our facebook page.

    Other Ways You Can Help

We understand if you can't help but certainly thank you for reading this far and giving us the chance. Think back...did any of it make you laugh? Did you wish you could do it? Did you think so-and-so would love that?? If yes then PLEASE share. We want a wide slice of life to be included in our story, the more the merrier and welcome any shares and forwarding you are willing to provide. We hope you'll take a moment to mention us on Facebook, twitter, Tumblr and all the rest. Especially to your friends with dollars burning holes in thier pockets. :)

    Who Made That Cocktail Shaker?

In 1848, George Foster, a reporter for The New York Tribune who spent his nights searching for good stories in the city’s seedier quarters, marveled at the way a bartender made a drink: “With his shirt sleeves rolled up, and his face in a fiery glow [he] seems to be pulling long ribbons of julep out of a tin cup.”

Newswire: You can now buy stuff directly through tweets

    by William Hughes

Twitter—realizing that that the Internet still contained far too many hurdles between people’s money and the instant gratification they so desperately seek by spending it—has announced that users will now be able to directly purchase products from within tweets.

The company stated on its blog that, starting today, a small but growing number of Twitter users will see a “Buy” button attached to certain posts on the popular micro-blogging and awful celebrity site. Users who click the button will experience a brief unease about the rampant commercialization of the world they live in, before being taken to a page where they can ignore that unhappy feeling by shoving money at whatever crap it was they were being tweeted at about.

Twitter’s initial partners in this bold experiment to cut the rational parts of your brain out of the purchasing decision loop include brands like Home Depot ...

Newswire: The Flaming Lips enlist Miley Cyrus, Maynard James Keenan for Beatles covers album

    by Marah Eakin

News and details about The Flaming Lips’ collab-heavy redo of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band have been floating around for a while, but now the world finally has a track list, thus revealing exactly which acts have chosen to hop on board the Lips’ psychedelic crazy train. A lot of the contributors—like Lips pal Miley Cyrus, for instance—have been rumored for a while, joined by new additions like Tegan And Sara and Tool’s Maynard James Keenan. The full track list is below, along with some upcoming Lips tour dates.

To the collaborators’ (and Lips’) credit, all proceeds from the sales of With A Little Help From My Fwends will be donated to The Bella Foundation, an Oklahoma City non-profit that assists low-income, elderly, or terminally ill pet owners with the cost of veterinary care.

    Holdout

With photos on their website strongly evoking the house from the Pixar film Up, host Roman Mars and producer Katie Mingle use this episode to feature the highly human subject of homeowners who refuse to leave. Holdouts are often shooed away by big developers, but sometimes it’s the government that takes a vested interest. The show first highlights David Hess, who was forced out of his home by New York City. All that was left for him was a piece of land the size of a large slice of pizza—mosaic tiles from 100 years ago still decorating that spot and declaring it private to this day ...

No, you let RoRo have turn…I can give RoRo lovies too…You’re just tired and crabby. It’s okay for me to love RoRo. You just stay there…I know, but it’s Ro’s turn.

Ray Rice's contract terminated by Ravens - SBNation.com

motherfuck goodell to the ends of the earth

The Baltimore Ravens have released running back Ray Rice, the team announced on Monday afternoon. The release comes following a video of him striking his wife Janay Palmer and knocking her unconscious leaked Monday through TMZ. Ray Rice had been serving a two-game suspension handed down earlier this year by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Goodell has subsequently acknowledged his mistake in the face of widespread public criticism over the length of the suspension and the manner in which he investigated the matter. Goodell reportedly allowed Rice to be in the room when Palmer met with Goodell at the NFL offices. The Ravens were no innocent party in this mess either. After a different video surfaced of Rice dragging his unconscious out of an elevator, the team held a disastrous press conference in which the star running back apologized to owner Steve Bisciotti, GM Ozzie Newsome, and head coach John Harbaugh, but not his wife. In a prepared statement, Rice stated, "Failure is not getting knocked down, it's not getting back up."

Broncos player wants Ray Rice thrown out of the NFL - SBNation.com

    by gguillotte
Denver Broncos defensive tackle Terrance Knighton just tweeted some strong words about the latest video of Ray Rice assaulting his then-fiancée Janay Palmer. "That man should be thrown out the the nfl and thrown into jail. Shame on those deciding his punishment. If there's anyway to open that case up and give this guy the punishment he deserves, it NEEDS to be done. As players we must speak up. Stand up for what's right. I don't give a damn who u are or how much money you make. No place for this. This video makes me sick to my stomach. As players we always speak on how we are unfairly treated, well now what?" Scott Fujita: "I'm glad no one this morning seems to care about yesterday's games. This piece of shit needs to be out of the league. Period."

    ugh timbers

Will Johnson is a grown man. He is a professional soccer player. He is a team captain.

He also throws a tantrum that would be impressive for a two-year-old.

"BUT IT WAS A BAD CALL. THE REF WAS BEING A STUPIDHEAD. I TOLD HIM TO WATCH AND HE DIDN'T EVEN WATCH. I BET MY DAD COULD BEAT UP HIS DAD. AND HE'S NOT COMING TO MY BIRTHDAY PARTY."
