Well I don’t get why we celebrate Columbus day because he never settled America, he settled what it now known as Hati and the coasts of mexico.
He didn’t just slaughter the natives, he and his men captured them and made them slaves. they sent some of them to the queen and he was just an awful awful person really. He made other slaves work the land they once inhabited freely.
So I mean, there shouldn’t even be a Columbus day technically.

we need to stop idealizing “speaking out” to the point where victims/survivors feel coerced to share their traumatic experiences around sexualized violence because they feel like they need to prove that they deserve support for being “brave enough” to speak out about it. there is tremendous strength and vulnerability in silence. i need us to stop relying on this model of bleeding ourselves dry in order for transformation of the self and others to happen.

In the ruthlessly competitive world of technology, where companies rush the latest gadget to market and slash prices to stay competitive, the TI-84 Plus is an anomaly.
Texas Instruments released the graphing calculator in 2004, and continues to sell it today. The base model still has 480 kilobytes of ROM and 24 kilobytes of RAM. Its black-and-white screen remains 96×64 pixels. For 10 years its MSRP has been $150, but depending on the retailer, today it generally sells for between $90 and $120. The only changes have come in software updates.
Amazon calls the TI-84 Plus a No. 1 best-seller. Texas Instruments says that this year the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition has become its best-selling calculator, and that the TI-84 is its most popular family of calculators. The TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition is slightly more expensive than the base model, has a color screen, rechargeable battery and significantly more memory.

Trey learned two things about me early on in our relationship. First, I'm the kind of gal that if a server asks if I want to look at the dessert menu, I say yes. It doesn't hurt to look, right? And second, he learned that if crème brûlée is on that dessert menu, I'm going to order it.
This version of crème brûlée features a healthy dose of espresso flavor. Honestly, it sort of tastes like a vanilla latte. I highly recommend serving these on a tray filled with coffee beans. The added aroma will totally impress whoever you are serving this to. And when they aren't looking, you can totally pour the beans back into the bag and save them for your morning coffee. That's exactly what I did. :)
Espresso Crème Brûlée, makes 6-8 depending on your ramekin size.
2 cups heavy cream
2 teaspoons espresso powder
1/4 cup sugar
4 egg yolks
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup to 1/3 cup super fine (baker's) sugar
Heat the heavy cream over medium heat, whisking to dissolve the espresso powder. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.
In a bowl combine the egg yolks and sugar. Stir for a couple minutes until the mixture turns from bright yellow to a paler yellow. Slowly whisk in the heavy cream-espresso mixture and the vanilla extract. Pour the batter into your ramekins.
Place the ramekins in a large casserole dish or a baking sheet with a tall lip. Fill the baking dish with water so the ramekins are half submerged in the water. Bake at 325°F for 45-48 minutes. The custard should look set but have a slight jiggle in the center (like a solid custard). If it seems too liquidy, allow them to cook for a few more minutes. Ramekin size can really make a difference here, so use your best judgement. Take care when removing the baking dish from the oven as the water will be very hot. You do not want to splash it on your skin.
Allow the custards to cool. Then cover and refrigerate for at least two hours or overnight. Before serving, sprinkle a thin layer of sugar over the top and caramelize with a kitchen torch or under the broiler. Enjoy! xo. Emma

BoardGameGeek also describes it as "the most autobiographic game designed by Rosenberg." That's because it's set where his parents grew up, though it makes me imagine an indie RPG where you all play entirely unhinged German board game designers, taking a road trip through the countryside to find inspiration for your new game.

Aboriginal women ask Stephen Harper: Am I next?
Am I next?
That’s the question aboriginal women are asking Prime Minister Stephen Harper in a new online campaign to renew pressure on his government to call a national inquiry into murdered and missing indigenous women.
Coming on the heels of Harper’s "sociological phenomenon" blunder, the campaign is the brainchild of Holly Jarrett. She’s the cousin of Loretta Saunders, a 26-year-old Inuit student at Saint Mary’s University who was murdered earlier this year. At the time of her death, Saunders was working on her thesis on murdered and missing aboriginal women.
"She had come through a lot of the same kind of struggles that a lot women affected by colonialism and residential school stuff," Jarrett told PressProgress Friday, a day after launching the Am I Next campaign.
"We wanted to move it forward for her. She was really passionate about telling her story, to stand up and tell the brutal truth," said Jarrett, an Inuit from the Labrador coast who’s now based in Hamilton, Ont.
After organizing one of the largest petitions at change.org calling on the government to launch a public inquiry into hundreds of missing and murdered aboriginal women, Jarrett decided to launch the Am I Next campaign.
It’s inspired by the Inuktitut word ain, a term of endearment for someone you love in her native language.

Yesterday the human backwash that started TheFappening subreddit devoted to sharing nude photographs stolen from female celebrities hosted an “Ask Me Anything” to apologize for his egregiously shitty invasion of women’s privacy whine over imagined free speech violations in an attempt to extend his fifteen minutes of Internet shame fame.
I think it’s important to draw attention to the Redditor’s responses in said AMA, not only because irony is an elusive and often misunderstood concept rarely demonstrated as perfectly as it was yesterday, but also because it’s vital to recognize the degree of chucklefuckery a person attains when deciding to benefit from a sex crime.
In one of the lowlife’s most telling responses, The Scumbag Who Won’t Be Named replied to a question about TheFappening’s shutdown by promising “I won’t be bullied into silence [...] I am not happy [...] if they banned my sub on Sunday (or even Monday after we broke the servers) I would be fine with it. But, they made a decision that seems based on what their lawyers say, rather than what is best for the site.” Asked if he felt guilty for violating victims’ privacy, he replied “No. I created it on a whim and just rode the wave as it went viral. My only regret is that the admins folded to legal pressure.”
Also, you guys, the Redditor has a totally valid, rational reason for wanting to continue using women’s bodies as a commodity in exchange for fake popularity points on the Internet:

Wow. For anyone who thought the money raised for charity by the subreddit indicated any remorse or wish to make amends, it’s pretty clear from the above statement that if (Hera forbid) another large-scale hack happens, TheFappening creator would have no problem violating women’s privacy for personal gain again. But hey, in cause you’re curious (you’re definitely not), he wants the world to know:

This might not be a popular statement, but I’m going to put it out there that anyone who takes advantage of what is, again, a sex crime, by looking at leaked pictures for whatever reason, is just as bad as this guy. Don’t be this guy. We can all be better than this guy.

Tapping directly into someone’s brain in order to share thoughts isn’t just for Spock anymore. An international team of researchers were able to replicate the Vulcan Mind Meld by creating a device that allows two people to share information through thought. The researchers tested the technology by separating the users over 8,000 km (5,000 mi) apart—with one user in France and the other in India. The paper has been published in PLOS ONE.
“We wanted to find out if one could communicate directly between two people by reading out the brain activity from one person and injecting brain activity into the second person, and do so across great physical distances by leveraging existing communication pathways,” co-author Alvaro Pascual-Leone said in a press release.
“One such pathway is, of course, the internet, so our question became, ‘Could we develop an experiment that would bypass the talking or typing part of internet and establish direct brain-to-brain communication between subjects located far away from each other in India and France?’”
The device connects directly to the users’ scalps and impulses from the sender were picked up via electroencephalogram (EEG) as well as by image-guided and robot-assisted transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The signal was encoded and sent via the internet to the user on the other end. Once it reached its target destination, the code was then interpreted by a computer interface and delivered to the recipient.
The device worn by the recipient stimulates phosphenes, which appear as flashes of light even though there isn’t actually any light entering the eye. (You can see this phenomenon for yourself by going into a dark room, closing your eyes, and then pushing on your eyeball.) The phosphenes are delivered in a pattern, which needs to be deciphered by the recipient who wears a blindfold to block out other visual stimuli.
Through this method, users were able to exchange simple messages of “ciao” and “hola” to one another without the use of speech, writing, or body language. Though there were minor errors during the trials, the system was, on average, over 90% accurate. There are other methods that would likely be more accurate, but require being embedded into the users. This EEG method is noninvasive and is therefore the best choice at this stage.
“By using advanced precision neurotechnologies including wireless EEG and robotized TMS, we were able to directly and noninvasively transmit a thought from one person to another, without them having to speak or write,” Pascual-Leone continued. “This in itself is a remarkable step in human communication, but being able to do so across a distance of thousands of miles is a critically important proof-of-principle for the development of brain-to-brain communications. We believe these experiments represent an important first step in exploring the feasibility of complementing or bypassing traditional language-based or motor-based communication.”
Using EEG to transmit information isn’t completely novel, as it has previously used when operating powered wheelchairs. However, this is the first time that the technology has been used to connect human brains directly. In the future, this technology could be used to help communicate with patients who, following disease or injury, are still aware but unable to speak.
