The 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Anime Debuts in Japan; Watch a Preview Right Now

by Mike Sampson

Guardians of the Galaxy‘ was a huge success this summer and it’s currently the biggest movie of the year. People not only loved going to see it, they loved going to see it again and again, which surely has people excited for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2‘. Unfortunately, that film isn’t set to hit theaters until July 28, 2017, so you’ve got a while to wait. But, until then, there is some ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ anime to tide you over.

This just aired in Japan, so you probably won’t get to see much of it elsewhere, but the ‘Guardians’ have made their first appearance in the series ‘Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers’; a TV series that seems a cross between ‘Pokemon’ and Marvel Comics. (Basically, superheroes have been captured by Loki into these little discs and two little kids find them and can release the heroes for short periods of time to battle villains. Now the kids travel across the world with The Avengers trying to collect all the discs. Or something? Dunno, it’s all kinda crazy.)

We watched the episode and it’s interesting mainly because it’s not bound by the Marvel Studios contracts and Spider-Man can be a member of The Avengers and they can pal up with the X-Men and so on and so forth. But, it’s very much made for Japanese kids. It’s partially funded by Bandai, who created the Power Rangers, just to give you an insight as to what kind of tone you’re looking at here.

Just this past week, the Guardians of the Galaxy were introduced as part of the show, and while the series is ostensibly based on the comics, these characters are very much influenced by James Gunn’s film. Unfortunately, “there are currently no plans for an international release.”

Because you can’t see the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ anime outside of Japan, we have a brief clip above you can watch, plus some additional GIFs we pulled from their first episode (wherein Rocket and Groot crash on Earth and Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax come to save them). The good news is that Marvel Animation is working on a ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ animated series to air alongside ‘Avengers Assemble,’ ‘Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.,’ and ‘Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors’ here in the States.

As music sales fall, sax player Kenny G turns to stockpicking - Yahoo Finance

by gguillotte
"Most people in the music business don't make as much money as we used to," said Gorelick, who topped the contemporary jazz sales charts for several years running in the 1990s and whose 2010 album cracked jazz's top ten. "You have your 1 percent of Beyonce and U2, who are playing stadiums, who are going to make tons of money. I'm going to put myself in the normal category of a music person who has been successful." Gorelick, who holds a degree in accounting from the University of Washington, keeps his assets in two main accounts: one for his own trading and one that is overseen by Todd Morgan, a founder of Los Angeles-based firm Bel Air Investment Advisors.

One of the two blogs Denton holds up as an example of a Kinja-powered success reblogged a rebuttal.

Facebook Tells Drag Queens To Use Their Legal Names Or Risk Losing Their Profiles

If there were ever a group of individuals not to piss off, it’s drag queens. These personalities and performers have fought too long and too hard for acceptance, let alone stage time, to go down without a fight. Yet Facebook is doing just that: blocking performers from using their assumed names rather than their legal ones. Performers including Sister Roma.

The 'Best Startup Of 2014' Is A Butler Service For Rich Techies

Perhaps the most innovative thing about Alfreds is that they cost just $99 a month. At that price, they’re sure to disrupt the antiquated business models of conventional, non-“shared-economy” servants, whose bloated cost structures include such extravagances as job security, a stable income, shelter, and sometimes even basic health care.

Low-Fat Dairy Will Not Make You Thin Or Happy

The problem with the campaign against dairy fat is not that dairy is completely good for you and that we should all eat wheels of Camembert for dinner. The problem is that Americans either could not or didn't feel like eating dairy fats in moderation.

Eyewitness comes forward on ‘Palin brawl’ | Amanda Coyne

'Another melee. This time Sarah got involved and began to scream profanities at everyone. One source, who didn’t want to be named, said that she was “nearly crawling on top of people,” trying to get into the scrum.

As these things go, that also broke up, and the Palins were asked again to leave. They piled into the Hummer, but not until Track stood out in front of the house, inexplicably with his shirt off, his middle finger raised at those who were also leaving.

Then the cops came, and took statements from about 10 people, including Thompson. It’s unclear who called them. Thompson thought it was the Palins.'

Todd races in the Iron Dog. According to another witness, Palin wore platform high-tops with the American flag emblazoned on them. Track Palin was there and so was Bristol’s son, Tripp.

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer said Peterson has been cooperating with law enforcement, and has to turn himself in to authorities. His status for this weekend's game against New England is unclear, Glazer said.

Grownup Congressman Mark Sanford Announces Breakup on Facebook - Yahoo News

No relationship can stand forever this tension of being forced to pick between the one you love and your own son or daughter, and for this reason Belen and I have decided to call off the engagement. Maybe there will be another chapter when waters calm with Jenny, but at this point the environment is not conducive to building anything given no one would want to be caught in the middle of what’s now happening. Belen is a remarkably wonderful woman who I have always loved and I will be forever grateful for not only the many years we have known and loved each other, but the last six very tough ones wherein she has encouraged me and silently borne its tribulations with her ever warm and kind spirit. ... 'Consuming or being under the influence of illegal drugs or excessive amounts of alcohol in the presence, or while responsible for, the care of the minor child.' This really is crazy. Why would one throw out the need for restraint if it were not a problem - or if one did not want to raise the specter of a problem? On this one all I can ask is that you talk to anyone who has seen or known me over my entire 54 years in the Low Country. I have never taken any illegal drug in my life. I did not drink in high school or college and though I do drink now, my consumption is so limited that my friends give me a hard time about it. I will have but one beer or two when out at a social occasion."

Walmart workers unhappy about new 'dress code' - Yahoo Finance

by gguillotte
Walmart says its average full-time hourly wage in the United States is $12.92. The company says employees are free to buy the clothes anywhere, however, Walmart also has extended an offer for employees to buy the clothes from Walmart for a 10% discount. If employees buy dress-code appropriate clothes (2 shirts and 2 pairs of pants) from the company's own website, that would add up to abour $48, after the company discount of 10%, which Moore says is "tiny" compared to other retailers' discounts. "If you work at any other store, whether it’s Macy’s (M) or Club Monaco, Urban Outfitters, you get 50% discounts, sometimes 60% discounts, so it’s also pretty chintzy on that front,” she said.

Punctual Pooch For their 130th anniversary, Swiss watchmaker...

Punctual Pooch

For their 130th anniversary, Swiss watchmaker Victorinox invited MWD to review their newest timepiece, the I.N.O.X. and we jumped at the opportunity. Right out of the box, you can tell this bad boy is no joke; sturdy, hefty but not heavy, and built to withstand a tank. No seriously, the I.N.O.X. has been through a ruthless battery of strength tests, including being driven over by a 64-ton tank without so much as a dent.

Aside from its durability, it’s also a beautiful timepiece; judging from pictures alone, we were expecting an overwhelming beast of a watch but it’s actually not as large as you think, fitting our less-than-beefy wrist just fine. It comes standard with a rubber strap and is technically a sports watch, but the bezel is so sleek that you could probably switch out the rubber for a leather band and dress it up with a suit and tie. The quartz-movement I.N.O.X. is available in 3 different dial colors: black, olive, and navy and comes in around $500, which makes it a lovely gift for that special dude without going into debt.

MWD approved - because even dogs need to be on time.

OK Go Claims Apple Stole Its Music Video Concept To Kick Off iPhone 6 Event

A shot from OK Go’s “The Writing’s On The Will” video, left and Apple’s “Perspectives” video, right.

In the video “Perspective” used by Apple to kick off its event unveiling the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch earlier this week, the company encourages people to “see things differently.” But the band OK Go — known for its colorful, quirky (I can use that word whenever I want, legally) music videos — says Apple saw things pretty much exactly the same way as it did when the group first pitched a video concept to the company last April.

That collaborative pitch was rejected by the company, OK Go’s manager tells Businessweek, so the band decided to go ahead and make the video anyway for its song “The Writing’s On The Wall.”

As you can see below, the video employs a single, long camera shot that tracks through a room and shows the band members popping in and out of different set=ups that appear to look one way when approached from a certain angle, and have a new meaning when viewed from another. You, know, perspective.

Meanwhile, Apple’s, ahem, “Perspectives” video employs a lot of the same technique, only in that video, words appear in unexpected ways throughout, instead of guys with mirrors on their head and polka dot sweatshirts that match the backgrounds:

They do feel similar, but that can happen, right? One style influences another? After all, OK Go’s video has been viewed over 10 million times since it was posted in June, so maybe some of its visual trickery simply rubbed off on Apple.

Except not really, the band’s manager says: After Apple declined the band’s pitch, the company hired the same production company behind OK Go’s video and used the same director.

While Apple hasn’t returned Businessweek’s request for comment, “The videos speak for themselves, and you can draw your own conclusions,” the band’s manager says.

Whaddya think?
