Apple Ketchup: 1940s Recipes + Menus : gourmet.com

by hodad

Put 1 dozen peeled, cored, and quartered tart apples into a kettle with enough water to cover them and simmer them until they are soft and nearly all the water is evaporated. Rub the mixture through a sieve and measure the pulp. To each quart of pulp add 2 cups vinegar, 2 medium-sized onions, grated, 1 cup sugar, 3 teaspoons salt, 2 teaspoons powdered cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon each dry mustard and ground cloves. Bring the ketchup to a boil, simmer for 1 hour, and pour it into jars. Seal and store in a dry, cool place.

Reports suggest the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus may bend in your pocket

by Andrew Cunningham
An iPhone 6 Plus displaying a subtle bend after a weekend of use.

Early buyers have now had a few days with their new iPhones, but some of them are running into a problem: in some cases the thin, flat phones are bending or warping slightly in users' pockets.

The earliest reports came from MacRumors, where forum posters reported bending in the iPhone 6 Plus after a weekend of use. Later, Geek.com writer Russell Holly posted photos of the smaller iPhone 6 exhibiting some of the same behavior. When placed on its (normally flat) front face, Holly's iPhone 6 rocks back and forth slightly on its face, a behavior we haven't noticed in any of our iPhone 6es or iPhone 6 Pluses. Based on the reports that we've read so far, it appears that some combination of body heat and pressure from the carrier's pocket is responsible for the warping.

We've reached out to Apple for a comment on the situation and will update this article if the company responds. It's worth noting that many phones, including the older iPhone 5 and 5S, have been known to bend occasionally—Cult of Mac has a nice roundup with plenty of examples. The question at this point is whether these reports of bending and warping iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units are isolated incidents or if, like the iPhone 4's antenna problems, the issue is endemic to the new design. We'll keep an eye on this one as more people begin receiving the phones and as we spend more time with them ourselves.

Newswire: Drake and Arcade Fire lost the Polaris Music Prize to a seal-eating throat singer

by Kayla Reed

Last night the 2014 Polaris Music Prize was bestowed upon Tanya Tagaq, an Inuit throat singer and Björk collaborator, for her album Animism. The choice is definitely a surprise, but it will hopefully spark curiosity and not the indie equivalent of when that other Canadian singer lost to an unknown. Tagaq beat out Arcade Fire (who already won for The Suburbs in 2011), Mac DeMarco, and Drake, among others, for the coveted Canadian title, which honors “albums of the highest artistic integrity, without regard to musical genre, professional affiliation, or sales history, as judged by a panel of selected music critics,” and comes with a $30,000 prize. She joins the likes of other Canadian darlings Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Feist, and Fucked Up.

Unlike previous winners, Tagaq used her acceptance speech to encourage hipsters to eat more seals. No, really.

Great Job, Internet!: A Texas band brought a song from a Spider-Man comic to life

by Rob Dean

It’s fitting that a song featured in a comic book about jumping between dimensions has now leapt from the pages and into real life. “Spider-Verse” is an event in Marvel’s Spider-Man comics that involves Spider-Men (Spider-Mans?) from alternate realities banding together to stop a villain the friendly neighborhood wall crawler couldn’t defeat on his own. In one of the tie-ins, Edge Of Spider-Verse no. 2, readers were introduced to a dimension where Gwen Stacy had been bitten by a radioactive spider and becomes Spider-Woman (bullied Peter Parker instead becomes the Lizard). Apparently with great power also comes great rhythm and the need to rock, as this dimension’s Gwen is the drummer of a band called The Mary Janes with other female Spider-Man supporting characters Mary Jane Watson, Betty Brant, and Glory Grant. That issue depicts the punk group rocking out to their song, “Face It Tiger ...

Great Job, Internet!: Video of frogs watching video of worms provides key to understanding viral media

by John Teti

A person recently played footage of wriggling worms for an assembled group of frogs, accidentally (?) creating a metaphor for all online media. What you see above is essentially frog Facebook, and the frogs have been presented with a new video in their feed. Said video promises more (a delicious meal of worms) than it can possibly deliver, and you get the feeling that the frogs sort of know that, but they go ahead and click on it—i.e., hurl themselves at it—anyway. They can’t help themselves.

Some of the frogs click on the video and hop away, disappointed. But other frogs stay and watch. (These frogs are known as “influencers.”) They stick around because hey, it’s still moving images of worms, and there aren’t any actual worms around. So even if they can’t eat the worms, they can look at the worms and laugh ...

Newswire: Director of Obama’s America sentenced to community service gulag in San Diego

by Sean O'Neal

Dinesh D’Souza, a poorly spelled placard who became sentient and directed movies such as 2016: Obama’s America and just plain America, has been sentenced to five years probation for loving America so much that he illegally donated to his friend’s campaign twice—because he loves elections twice as much as you do. D’Souza pled guilty in May to violating campaign finance laws by enlisting his then-fiancee and his former assistant to help him funnel $20,000 in funds to New York senatorial candidate Wendy Long; he’s since used his every public forum to complain that he’s being unfairly targeted by the Obama regime. And today the Obama dictatorship wielded its mighty power, demanding $30,000 from D’Souza and banishing him to five backbreaking months of sitting in a “community confinement center” in the bleak tundra of San Diego.

In delivering D’Souza’s ...

Grace Murray Hopper – GHN: IEEE Global History Network via Retro computing.

A 1962 Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) Fellow “for contributions in the field of automatic programming,” Grace Hopper was one of the most important computer programmers in the pioneering era of computing.

Born Grace Brewster Murray in New York City, she received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics from Vassar College in 1928 (Phi Beta Kappa). Hopper earned a master’s and doctorate in mathematics from Yale in 1930 and 1934. After returning to Vassar as an instructor from 1933 to 1943, Hopper decided to join the America military’s World War II efforts. She joined the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Service) program in December 1943 and was commissioned a lieutenant early the next year, taking an assignment at the Bureau of Ordnance Computation Project at Harvard University.

After the war, Hopper stayed on as a research fellow at the Harvard Computation Laboratory. In 1949, she went to work for the Eckert-Mauchly Corporation, and in 1952, became Director of Automatic Programming for the UNIVAC Division of Sperry Rand (which had acquired the Eckert-Mauchly company). Hopper was one of the originators of high-level programming languages, completing one of the first compilers in 1952.

by Katie Rife

I accept it

With a resume that includes both 12 Years A Slave and Trapped In The Closet, Michael K. Williams has proven himself to be quite versatile. That—plus the fact that his casting would give The A.V. Club ample opportunities to quote The Wire, and quoting The Wire is fun—means he would probably be great in a Marvel movie. Williams apparently agrees, to the point that he’s starting his own casting rumors.

“No, not yet. And I’m saying ‘yet’ with a lot of emphasis. But hopefully I’m looking forward to being a part of the franchise,” Williams said when Cinema Blend asked about his superhero prospects. He went on to say that his hero of choice would be Black Panther—not out of childhood nostalgia but because “I would definitely bring that quintessential New York City edge. Is There Any Plausible Reason Why Aliens Would Evolve To Look Like Us?

In science fiction movies and TV shows, intelligent aliens are usually the same basic shape as humans: two arms, two legs and a head. But why would creatures that evolved on a completely different planet look so similar to us? We asked some experts, and they told us the most likely explanations for humanoid aliens.

Elite Dangerous Beta 2 On Sep 30th, Original Elite Is Free

by Graham Smith

By Graham Smith on September 23rd, 2014 at 8:00 pm.

I continue to find Elite: Dangerous‘s version names slightly confusing. Premium Beta 2 came out back in June, but the new update coming September 30th is called “Beta 2″. Thankfully I can overcome my confusion for the exciting feature list, which includes a reputation system, the introduction of exploration mechanics, 500 new star systems, a vaster collection of upgrade spaceship modules…. And so on. The full list is below the fold.

Here’s the full list:

  • Combat ratings from ‘Harmless’ all the way up to ‘Elite’.
  • Reputations per system and galaxy-wide that influence attitudes and prices offered to you.
  • Ability to discover and explore and scan new systems and sell the data on them.
  • Detailed system maps.
  • Around 500 additional star systems to explore.
  • Lakon Asp Explorer ships added.
  • Much greater variety of upgradable Life Support modules, Engines, Hyperdrives, Power Distributors, Sensors, Shield Generators and Cargo Racks for all ships.
  • Ships are subject to gradual ‘wear and tear’.
  • New weapons including mines and a new non-lethal missile-deployed cargo hatch disruptor for piracy.
  • Outposts (small, exposed ‘roadside café’ stations in remote locations)
  • Occelus starports, a version of which can move around for early civilization of new systems and space tourism.
  • Visibility of other ships in supercruise, and track others through supercruise and hyperspace.
  • Newsfeeds about events from the rest of the galaxy and player activity in your local system.
  • All backers names (from the appropriate crowd-funding reward tiers) have been added to the NPC naming database.

Elite: Dangerous already feels great to fly and fight around, but each added detail to its expanding galaxy is exciting because it offers not just more to do in the inky black, but a further expansion of its space-venturer fantasy. I want to rocket around between its’roadside cafe’-style outposts next, like a space trucker…

Oh no, I just remembered.

While the Elite Dangerous Beta may also be too expensive for you at its current £50 price, you could always of course celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary by grabbing the original Elite for free. Also, I wouldn’t normally casually link to DLC – and I wouldn’t pay £10 for this – but the wireframe Cobra paintjob on sale is kinda cool too.

X-Men: Apocalypse To Have Ickle Baby Versions of Storm, Cyclops, and Jean Grey - '80s Mohawk Storm or bust.

We told you yesterday that Bryan Singer will be directing X-Men: Apocalypse, but that’s not the only X-news that’s broken. There’s a new plot description out, and it has some pleasing nuggets.

Via Deadline:

“The altering of time has unleashed a new and uniquely powerful enemy. Charles (James McAvoy), Erik/Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Hank/Beast (Nicholas Hoult) are joined by young Cyclops, Storm, Jean and others as the X-Men must fight their most formidable foe yet: an ancient unrelenting force determined to cause an apocalypse unlike any in human history.”

So… Charles and Erik are working together again? That should make Tumblr happy. The big news here, though, is that Storm, Cyclops, and Jean Grey—the latter two brought back from death after Days of Future Past decided fuck it, we’re just going to retcon The Last Stand out of existence—will be coming back into the fray, but as younger versions of themselves. That makes sense, given we already knew Apocalypse would be a got-dang ’80s period film.

You know what was big in the ’80s?

NASA Administrator Resigns After Leak Of Offensive Anti-Moon Email

firehose

In the email, sent to several top NASA officials, an exasperated Bolden appears to vent his frustrations about the agency’s historic involvement with the moon, going so far as to say that Earth’s lone natural satellite “all but ruins the night sky for me” and that every dollar spent on lunar exploration might as well have been “thrown straight in the trash.” Later in the email, Bolden seems to downplay the significance of the recent 45th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 moon landing, wondering “how the hell Neil Armstrong just didn’t fall asleep walking around on that thing.”

Longtime colleagues of Bolden told reporters that while they respected him for his many contributions to the agency over the course of his career, they agreed that his remarks concerning the widely beloved celestial body, unmistakably sent from his email account and typed by his own hand, had destroyed his credibility.

“I wish I could understand what would possess someone so committed to space exploration to say such ugly things about the moon,” NASA Associate Administrator Robert Lightfoot said, adding that he was shocked and appalled when he read Bolden’s wish that the moon would “just wane itself out of existence.” “But his comments were clearly inexcusable. Unfortunately, I think his resignation was the only way for NASA, and for Charles himself, to move forward.”

“This isn’t the Charles Bolden I know,” added Lightfoot. “At least the one I thought I knew.”

Several unnamed NASA sources, however, told reporters that Bolden’s moon email was indicative of a pattern of intolerance that spanned decades and that also included derogatory comments about astronomical phenomena such as pulsars, sunspots, and the spherical mass of comet-like objects beyond the outermost planets known as the Oort cloud.

Additionally, sources pointed to an event honoring the retirement of the Space Shuttle in 2011, when a hot mic reportedly caught Bolden calling gas giant planets “big fucking nothings.”

HOUSTON—Saying he deeply regretted his “thoughtless and insensitive” comments, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden announced his resignation as head of the nation’s space agency Tuesday following the disclosure of an email in which h...

Gullible People Are Microwaving Their iPhones Because of a Twitter Prank, Don’t Try This at Home - Next year it'll be kinetic energy charging that powers it by throwing.

by Dan Van Winkle

Note to #iPhone users: That microwave charging thing is a hoax http://t.co/EOmip6SGv9 pic.twitter.com/WhXpLrWv13

— CTV Vancouver (@CTVVancouver) September 23, 2014

As advertised, using the new “Wave” technology in iOS 8 will quickly fill your phone’s battery—with fire, smoke, and explosions, that is. Who knew that putting metal objects into the microwave wouldn’t end well? These people need more Jennifer Lawrence in their lives.

oven_fire_reactionsmall

Important life lesson learned.

The hoax follows a similar one from last year, when 4Chan users tried to convince iPhone owners that iOS 7 could sense when a phone was submerged in water and automatically protect itself by shutting off the phone’s power. When the iPhone 6 was announced, 4Chan users began brainstorming a new hoax as shown in screenshots on a Reddit thread. From there, the idea of “wave” charging caught on and was passed around Twitter with an Apple-inspired ad for the feature under the hashtag #AppleWave.

Damn, making me want an iPhone so i can use #AppleWave !!!!! pic.twitter.com/kODmNQ6UP4 — Skinny (@ben_bruzz) September 22, 2014

Just like the waterproofing, they make it sound like the feature can be enabled through software alone and will work on any iOS 8 device, and, well, it looks like people have believed them (which I know is what you’re really here for).

Of course, there’s no way to know whether or not these people actually microwaved their phones or are just playing into the joke, which there’s also no shortage of.

@SwagdaddySlansk I’m totally kidding hahaha my phone is completely fine, I didn’t do it… I got that pic from google

While my initial reaction to this was definitely a laugh at how gullible people would have to be to try microwaving their iPhones, you’d also have to be a fairly large jerk to deliberately spread a hoax that you know is costing people expensive technology. Being a jerk is not better than being gullible. Please remember the power of the masses, which you can also learn about through movie GIFs.

prostheticknowledge: WirePrint Prototyping 3D printing method...

Courtney shared this story from Super Opinionated.

prostheticknowledge:

WirePrint

Prototyping 3D printing method from HPI reduces construction time of model making by a tenth creating wireframe versions of forms - video embedded below:

WirePrint prints 3D objects as wireframe previews. By extruding filament directly into 3D space instead of printing layer-wise, it achieves a speed-up of up to a factor of 10, allowing designers to iterate more quickly in the early stages of design …

Even though considered a rapid prototyping tool, 3D printing is so slow that a reasonably sized object requires printing overnight. This slows designers down to a single iteration per day. With WirePrint, we propose to instead print low-fidelity wireframe previews in the early stages of the design process. Wireframe previews are 3D prints in which surfaces have been replaced with a wireframe mesh. Since wireframe previews are to scale and represent the overall shape of the 3D object, they allow users to quickly verify key aspects of their 3D design, such as the ergonomic fit.

What Is SteamFluff? :: Fluff Festival in Union Square, Somerville | Union Square Main Streets

by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy

OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy

Imagine me screaming “#villeashell! #villeashell!” over and over again like in that Austin Powers “MOLE! MOLE! MOLEY MOLEY MOLEY” scene.

What is SteamFluff?

We're inspired this year by the creativity of Steampunk.  Steampunk takes the mind of nineteenth century science fiction authors like Jules Verne (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth) and H.G. Wells (The Time Machine, War of the Worlds) and brings it into today. It takes the technology of their time -- steam power, the start of the industrial revolution -- and their fashion aesthetic -- Victorian England and America's Wild West -- and re-imagines it.

Steampunk tropes are top hats, corsets, and pocket watches. Because the heroes of this world are scientists and tinkerers, steampunk features complex machines made of repurposed everyday objects with visible working gears.  And because this is a science fiction that reaches across the centuries, the concept of time, travel and time travel are prominent so expect lots of googles, protective jackets, watches, and lens to look through.

Archiald Query, the inventor of Fluff we celebrate in this festival, was born in the nineteenth century and shares the steampunk desire to make something new.  An immigrant to Somerville, he knew a thing about perilous journeys.  Marshmallow Fluff itself, made the same way today as when Archie first whipped it up, is a magical substance that allows everyone who eats it to return to the time of their own childhoods.  We therefore declare SteamFluff as our vehicle for this year's state of play.

Great Job, Internet!: Eugene Mirman’s Flotsam General Store skewers artisanal everything

The Internet is one of the few things that doesn’t have an organic alternative, although the second someone figures out how to sell artisanal wireless routers, they will. Brooklyn, for better or for worse, is the epicenter of the artisanal movement, offering high-quality (and high-priced) alternatives to everything from mayonnaise to beef jerky for well-heeled residents who prefer to know the name of the chicken they’re about to eat.

#626: Self-care tip: Stop auditioning for the approval of people who dislike you

by JenniferP
firehose

never follow firehose

Courtney shared this story from Captain Awkward:
"I cannot describe the peace of mind that comes when you stop subjecting yourself to a constant ambient awareness and interaction with someone who annoys the shit out of you."

Hello Captain!

I’m writing to you about a lady in my friend group who seems to dislike me very much, and makes social gatherings very uncomfortable. Some back story: I started dating my boyfriend Brad about 4 years ago, and hung out with his friend group consisting of his friend from childhood Jake, Jake’s wife Pam, Jake’s brother John, and John’s girlfriend, the lady who now won’t talk to me unless forced, Kayla. (names changed!)

For the first year Brad and I dated, everyone got along! Kayla was warm and friendly, and once when drunk told me that I was “the sister she never had.” Her, Pam, and I would go shopping, talk about comics or feminism, the whole group played cards and went out – things were fine! But then around the same time Kayla and I both moved in to the 3 bedroom apartment Jake, Pam, John, and Brad were sharing, each couple in a room sharing 2 bathrooms and a kitchen, and things deteriorated rapidly.

Simple roommate requests, like “Brad and I have done the dishes twice this week, do you mind taking care of them soon?” became big THINGS for John and Kayla. After any typical roommate issue, they would withdraw to their room, and Kayla would stop speaking to us. We ignored it, chalking it up to social awkwardness, but things got worse. Suddenly Kayla didn’t want us playing with John’s cat. (who, up until this point, was all over the apartment and playing with everyone freely) No reason was given, nothing was said, but suddenly Brad, and mostly me, got nasty looks from Kayla if we picked up the feather toy, and the cat would then be locked up in their room. Soon John and Kayla weren’t even acknowledging us when everyone was in the main room together, or if we bumped into them during the day.

Pam and Jake noticed this change and spoke to John and Kayla privately, and they really made an effort to be more sociable to us for the next few months. Kayla still wasn’t talking to us a lot, but she at least said hello and acknowledged our presence. Then, about a year after everyone moved in together, Brad and I had a small, typical-couple-stuff spat and Kayla was the only other person home. Brad went out to cool down and I was washing my face in the shared bathroom. Kayla walked by and I made a small mention of the spat, and we talked for a bit about long-term relationships; she even seemed warm towards me. Brad and I figured everything out, and everything went on as normal.

But after that day Kayla point blank refused to speak to me or even make eye contact. She was perfectly fine to everyone else in the apartment, including Brad, but now all the antisocial weirdness from before was directed solely at me. If I ran into her and John in the parking lot and said hi, she would look away and walk straight past me, even if John and I were still chatting. At one point we were all at a restaurant and when I sat down, she literally scooted into John’s lap to not sit next to me, and only came off when I moved seats. She blocked me on all social media when prior to this we had all been fairly interactive on Facebook and Twitter, but denied doing so when confronted by Jake and Pam. Jake and Pam eventually stopped inviting her to outings unless she acted nicely, and even then she would sit as far away from me as possible and responded to any attempts at conversation with one-word answers. At this point I had sent a text and also spoken with her face to face, saying that if I had done anything to make her uncomfortable or upset, that I was sorry and would like to reconcile. Over text she said “Sure!” and in person she just smiled and nodded, but nothing changed. I gave up trying to figure things out and let her be, and Brad and I tried to hand out with Pam and Jake alone more often.

Now, another two years later, all of the couples have moved into apartments of our own, but things are still distinctly weird when everyone gets together. I have tried to speak to Pam, who is close with Kayla, and she has said that Kayla tells her she likes me and everything is fine. She still has me blocked on all social media and when questioned by Pam, said she forgot to undo the blocking. However when we all hang out Kayla will ignore me in the conversation but exuberantly engage with the others. Even if I am included in the conversation, she will address them as if I am not there, even in conversations about things Brad and I now share like our apartment, car, cats, etc. I feel like I’m intruding on conversations about my own life, and it’s frustrating and hurtful. Ultimately Kayla has the right to dislike me whatever the reason, and I don’t want her do anything she doesn’t want to do. However I’d like to be able to engage with my friends about mine and Brad’s life without someone essentially denying my involvement in it.

I feel like I’ve done everything I can to address this, and to do more would just be unnecessary drama. Do you and the awkward army have any advice on how I should proceed?

It sounds like the time of “We are three close-knit couples who socialize all together” is at an end. It’s long past being at an end. In fact, it only works if everyone pretends that Kayla doesn’t hate you, and if you pretend that Kayla doesn’t hate youwhile she is actively hating you to your face. At a bigger event, it would be less noticeable and more bearable – it’s very possible to go to parties where you don’t like every single person and say a perfunctory heyhowyadoin to some people and focus your attention on others. But when there are only 6 people in the room, it’s impossibly awkward. Decide today: No more nightmare brunches! No more silent-treatment to your face! brunches.

What I suggest is that you and your boyfriend keep inviting invite Pam & Jake to do stuff, just the two of them, and maybe mix it up with some other friends you have, too. And if Pam & Jake invite you to do stuff with Kayla and John, you say “No thanks!” until they get the hint or Pam straight up asks you why and you can say “I’ve decided to stop subjecting myself to Kayla’s bullshit, thanks. I know you’re friends with her, keep enjoying that! But she is never invited to anything I plan, and I’ve decided to stop pretending for all our sakes. I don’t like how she treats me, and I don’t want to subject myself to it.”

I also suggest that you block the living shit out of Kayla on all modes of social media. It will be good for you. Unfriend her boyfriend, too while you’re at it. There’s nothing there for you. I cannot describe the peace of mind that comes when you stop subjecting yourself to a constant ambient awareness and interaction with someone who annoys the shit out of you. Be free!

You have done everything you could to make it better. You tried. You are a nice person. You don’t have anything to apologize for. She doesn’t like you. Stop engaging, and stop putting yourself in situations where you have to hang out with her. Put your energy into making other friends and seeing other friends. This isn’t fixable.

Friend Groups can be nice things to have, but they stop functioning if they stop functioning for you. You can maintain friendships with Pam and Jake and preserve the connection to that part of your life, but preserving “the group” at the expense of yourself is no fun. Disengage, disengage, disengage. And ask your boyfriend to back you up here.

Unfriend someone you dislike today!
