Microsoft teaches Cortana to speak Klingon

by Tom Warren

Microsoft is in London this week sponsoring the third-annual Star Trek conference. Instead of just splashing its corporate logo all over the conference, Microsoft has gone a step further by changing its Cortana digital assistant to speak Klingon, the language spoken by Klingons in Star Trek. It’s activated simply by asking cortana to "speak Klingon," and the software maker has added a number of other Star Trek themed responses. Beam me up, set phasers to stun, and do you know commander data all work, along with simply saying "engage" to trigger Star Trek responses.

Microsoft’s chief envisioning officer, Dave Coplin revealed today that Cortana’s Star Trek responses were mainly made possible because engineers working on Cortana are fans of Star Trek. It’s the latest in a series of improvements to Cortana that add functionality and features instead of just gimmicky responses. Cortana will now tell you when your favorite musician is playing nearby, and Microsoft is working to bring delivery tracking to Cortana in future. Windows 10 will also include deep Cortana integration when it ships next year.

'Smash Bros.' in virtual reality: how the Oculus Rift remixed my childhood

by Ross Miller

For the last month or so, Scott Kellum — a VR enthusiast and Vox Media's senior front-end designer — has been inviting people over to try out the Oculus Rift. The first time I tried the headset was well over two years ago, and admittedly I haven't used it but once or twice since. So late last week, I re-entered the virtual world by way of an off-white desk chair in the middle of Scott's living room.

I ran through the usual motley crew of demos — sitting in a chair as civilization rises and falls around me, sitting in a mouse-sized roller coaster set up around a studio apartment, and "standing" (virtually) while Totoro steals my umbrella and leaves me in the pouring rain in the woods.

But what I really wanted was a game. And that's when we played Super Smash Bros. Melee. As in, the GameCube version from 2001 — but through the Oculus Rift.

Holy shit.

Link smash gif

Let's back up a second and explain how this came to be. Dolphin is an open-source emulator that lets people play GameCube and Wii games on a PC or Mac — in HD, no less, something the actual GameCube and Wii aren't capable of. The experience is imperfect — an emulator works by trying to recreate custom hardware via software — but it does mean the community can do crazy things like, say, program support for VR. (Indeed, Smash Bros. is just one of many games Nintendo games compatible with the Rift.) The only missing piece is a (legally obtained) unaltered ROM file of your favorite Nintendo game.

So there I was, wearing an Oculus Rift headset, holding an Xbox 360 controller, and beating up Pikachu. The entire experience made me giddy, from the title screen onward. The character select screen was a giant IMAX screen floating in midair. I could move my body closer to it, farther away, rotate my head to and fro — the usual head gestures people make when they start exploring a virtual world. I've used the Oculus Rift plenty before, but this was a chance to see one of my all-time favorites from (literally) an entirely new angle.

So there I was, wearing the Oculus Rift, holding an Xbox 360 controller, beating up Pikachu

It's a testament to Nintendo's designers that they've fleshed out parts of the stages that they never expected to be seen in full view. Corneria (the Star Fox level) is a two-dimensional battle on a starship that looks to be actually flying through a small track (ditto the F-Zero level Mute City). The world below Temple (a floating-yet-otherwise-stationary structure in the sky) spans surprisingly far. The lot across the street from Onett (Earthbound) has some development plots. Oculus Rift didn't fundamentally change Smash Bros. — which is already an incredibly fun game — but it did augment an experience I thought I knew all too well.

Smash VR B

Smash VR B

And because it's an experimental emulation on top of experimental emulation, naturally there are glitches. But I love glitches — as long as the game's still playable (still was), it's just a fun remix. To list a few:

  • The game itself was sped up a hair, audio and video, which became obvious whenever Captain Falcon taunted a high-pitched "show me ya moves!"
  • Some of the textures never loaded. In the matchup screen against multiple targets, it was Mario (me) vs. a harsh mass of distortion and TV snow
  • Because the camera would default to showing the entire map, levels like Target Test and Race to the Finish were nigh playable. I would literally have to get up and walk forward a few feet, but doing that would have knocked over the webcam tracking my head movements, the coffee table, a few bottles of beer, the TV itself, etc.

But the best experience, and one that harkens back to all those other Oculus Rift demos, was the credits. The Super Smash Bros. Melee credit sequence is an on-the-rails ride through a star system cluttered with hundreds of names — the designers, developers, programmers and QA testers involved with making the game.

So once again, I'm back where I started. On a roller coaster ride I have seen literally hundreds of times in my life (specifically, hundreds of hours of my high school years). Only now I'm able to look beyond the older constrictions.

Playing Smash Bros. Melee through an Oculus Rift has changed my view of the game — and it's changed my view on the Oculus Rift. Virtual reality allows for new means of immersion; that I already knew far too well. This experience showed me how it can remix my childhood.

Newswire: Dwayne Johnson will star in Baywatch, which is an action movie now

by William Hughes

Like the fall leaves, or a drowning swimmer slowly turning blue while lifeguards run in slow motion toward him, Paramount’s attempt at making a Baywatch movie has once again changed its colors. The last we had heard about Baywatch, Reno 911’s Robert Ben Garant was attached to direct the film as a parody of the TV series, with Bill Hader in a lead role. But now The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Dwayne Johnson is “loosely attached” to star in the film, which is now being described as an action movie. Furthermore, Garant is apparently no longer involved, We’re The Millers writers Sean Anders and John Morris are said to be directing, and Trophy Wife writer Justin Malen will be the latest doomed soul to take a stab at the movie’s undying chimera of a script.

And just to be clear, we’re talking about the official ...

“Annie (a pseudonym) is a Chinese-American, straight, female university professor. While she was in graduate school, she found it difficult to receive medical treatment due to the perceived psychiatric condition of simply being Asian and female: “I went to a doctor at the university because I had recurring abdominal pain. The doctor listened to my description, but rather than doing a physical exam, he explained to me that it was normal for Asian women to be anxious and stressed out, and anxiety was probably causing my abdominal pain.” But surprisingly, the doctor didn’t treat the anxiety either. He just said there was nothing he could do.”

Baystate Banner Publisher Melvin Miller’s NH Home Burns To Ground

Melvin Miller, Owner and Publisher of the Baystate Banner, was a victim of a raging inferno which claimed his New Hampshire home.  No one was home at the time and no one was injured however the fire consumed the entire house.  Fire officials who arrived on scene said the house was completely engulfed in an inferno and beyond saving. Neighbors reported that the fire was so intense you could see the glow in the sky.

Recently, Miller has been engaged in a war of words with The Boston Globe which has been critical of a $200,000 loan provided Miller at the behest of Mayor Menino through the BRA and has yet to be paid back in full.  Miller has responded consistently that the $200,000 loan was not in danger of going unpaid because it was secured by a property worth much more than the $200k.  The NH house which was totally destroyed by fire was the property that secured that loan.  The fire is currently under investigation by NH officials and the City of Boston has not yet commented on what this loss for Miller means in terms of the status of the loan.

Scott Brown: Birth Control and Equal Pay Are Not 'Issues That People Care About'

by hodad

binders full of issues

Fox News host Gretchen Carlson asked Brown to address comments from his opponent, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), about his voting record.

"He doesn’t stand up for women’s reproductive rights and economic security," Carlson quoted Shaheen as saying. "He co-sponsored legislation to let employers deny women coverage for birth control or even mammograms. He had two opportunities to vote for equal pay laws and both times he voted no."

"So Senator, how do you respond to her claims?" Carlson asked.

"Well unfortunately, I’m talking about issues that people care about," Brown fired back.

He went on to say he supports contraception and equal pay and that "women's issues are very important," but that he is "focusing on the things that people care about," such as "border security, veterans issues, [and] where we stand when it comes to Obamacare."

Oregon penalized for taking a bow

by Ricky O'Donnell
firehose

football penalties are hilariously infuriating

In a game full of penalties, a late one by the Ducks proved to be costly.

On third-and-goal from Oregon's eight yard line, Ducks defender Tony Washington sacked Arizona QB Anu Solomon. He proceeded to run the middle of the field and take a bow, a celebration the officials deemed an unsportsmanlike. The penalty kept the drive alive, and the Wildcats would go on to score the touchdown go-ahead touchdown in a previously tied game.

It's worth noting Arizona got a similar penalty earlier in the game.

Arizona should be pleased after completing one of the biggest upsets of the college football season, and "Duck Hunt" is a good way to represent it. Notice the subtle use of two ducks, to show both of Arizona's upsets of Oregon in the last two years.

There's one problem though. We all know the classic NES light gun game featured a dog who retrieved the shot birds. No cat is going to have that kind of loyalty to an owner, let alone a wildcat. A cat is going to hide those ducks from its owner and slowly devour them in the bushes.

Texans vs. Cowboys picks and predictions 2014: Who do the experts like in Lone Star State showdown?

by Michael Jones

"SB Nation's panel of experts have the Cowboys coming out on top by a margin of 5-2."

w/e, JJ Watt is going to have his first 10-sack/10-INT game

Can the Cowboys keep the momentum in their favor with a win against their in-state rival?

The Dallas Cowboys have impressed both Las Vegas and NFL analysts this season with a 3-1 record against the spread and overall. Now, they'll face the in-state rival Houston Texans to see which team can continue its surprising run toward the playoffs.

According to the folks over at OddsShark, Jason Garrett was the favorite among prop bettors to be the first head coach to be fired this season. Instead, they're rolling behind a surprising defense and efficient running game to complement a healthy Tony Romo and the passing attack.

Houston comes in with the sixth-ranked defense in terms of points allowed. The team will have to deal with DeMarco Murray and Dez Bryant applying pressure.

Since the Cowboys are at home and seem to be clicking in every facet of the game, they enter this matchup as 7-point favorites. The O/U is situated at 47 with 56 percent of the action as of Thursday leaning toward the over.

This figures to be a high-scoring affair and will test both defenses.

SB Nation's panel of experts have the Cowboys coming out on top by a margin of 5-2. If history is any indicator, Dallas has a slight edge because of its 2-1 head-to-head record in the all-time series. In those contests, they've averaged 23.67 points against Houston's 12.67.

Among other experts across other major platforms, Dallas earns a clean sweep with ESPNCBS Sports and Yahoo Sports each tabbing the 'Boys as winners on Sunday.

BILL SIENKIEWICZ CORRECTS TERRIBLE ‘SUPERMAN DOES IT AGAIN’ SHIRT WITH APPROPRIATE LEVELS OF VIOLENCE

By now, you’ve probably heard all about the genuinely awful licensed t-shirt featuring Superman planting a seemingly unwelcome smooch on Wonder Woman and proclaiming “SCORE!” and that he’s “done it again.” It’s bad for a lot of reasons — blatant sexism, the awful lettering of the caption box — but, as an optimist, I’ve always taken the position that nothing is so bad that it can’t be improved in some way. And apparently, that’s Bill Sienkiewicz’s position as well.

After everyone got up in short-sleeved arms about the shirt, the legendary artist behind Elektra: Assassin, New Mutants and much much more  took to Facebook in order to provide his own version of the shirt, complete with a new piece of art for the back that solves its major problems in the way that all superheroes fix things: Violence!

The new CSS is up, maybe when I am typing this, maybe slightly after. If you're reading this wondering "why there is no new CSS?" maybe go make a sandwich, read one of Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy, or consider a kimchi recipe. But first finish reading this, because you already made it this far so why not? Then press F5.

Thanks to /u/Discord_Dancing we have a new CSS layout. Yay! We are planning on continuing to improve this CSS, and this thread is for you to make suggestions and/or contribute submissions for sidebar images. Have at it.

Edit: Let's keep it civil and the criticism constructive. We are already making changes based on your feedback (bye yellow bar!) but it's not a healthy sign for our community if we can't have a civil discussion about improving things. I think we're a better, smarter community than that.

Brutal Battle Between Great White Sharks? Not really, no.

DSN on the debunk beat

"Over the past couple of days a video portraying a seemingly “brutal battle” between two Great White Sharks went viral. I tend to avoid following links with such sensationalist claims, but the video was shared with me in Twitter, Facebook and Google+ so many times that I had to check it out.

When I actually took the time to watch the video, I noticed that in reality nothing remotely close to a battle takes place.

But if not a battle, what exactly is going on? It’s quite simple, both sharks are going after the bait hanging behind the boat at the same time, and the small shark is simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. What do you think would happen if you tried to feed two wild bears in Yosemite with a big juicy steak at the same time? Or even two dogs that don’t know each other? Of course sparks would fly, so I think you get the idea."

I doth protest…

by stylebubble

I’ve finally had a moment to sit down and gather my thoughts about the Chanel S/S 15 show, a pleasant stroll down Boulevard Chanel that has essentially been overshadowed by the faux-test, fashion riot and co-opting of feminism that has reverbed into discussion threads far longer and more in depth than any other show of the season, nay maybe the year.  I have to thank Instagram for clarifying my thoughts – not through the endless pictures by attendees, which mostly gave the show a big thumbs up and applauded the genius of Karl Lagerfeld – but by commenters on a little slideshow I made of the picket sign and banner waving finale.  I salute you guys for bringing thought provoking discussion without brainless finger pointing to the land of emojis and likes.

0E5A9638

I was ready to dissect it all to try and conclude my own initial feelings of unease and confusion when I first saw the show.  Then I went and read some of the reviews that had gone up.  Vanessa Friedmann, of the New York Times, who has been injecting pretty much every review with a political angle, somehow skirted the issue.  Tim Blanks did add context and colour to his review but gave Lagerfeld a pass because he was remembering 1968.   An interesting Twitter convo between Cathy Horyn (your presence is missed…) and writer Max Berlinger had Horyn answering questions from the public about recent shows.  What did she think of the Chanel finale?

“My knickers are not in a twist. It’s a show!” she replied.

That was a nail in my twisted knickered self.  Had I overthought it and gone too deep into my foggy flu-influenced thoughts?  Should I tra-la-la along and laugh it all off as just a bit of fun at a fashion show?

0E5A9434

0E5A9440

Well, I’ve thought and re-thought.  The feelings throttling about in my feverish head were real.  When waiting for the show to start, I was catching up on what was happening in Hong Kong on The Guardian.  I was thinking about how proud I was that as a sort-of-HK-er, Hong Kong – a city which I had thought was essentially a slave to the $ and consumerism – had galvanised itself and was fighting back for what is a hugely worthy cause.  I was also still slightly perturbed by the fact that on Sunday night, a Chinese “fan” accosted me in a restaurant, accusing me of betraying my “country” because I had tweeted out my support for the pro-democracy protests – did try and tell her that China was, not in fact my country.  I was incensed and perhaps, slightly raging in my own head.

My head looked up.  Then I saw pretty paint-splattered tweed, rainbow silk and ribbon woven in and out, monochrome metallic pin-striping and the continuation of “street-inspired” casualification of Chanel classics.  All good and well.  They walked down the street in pairs, trios or by themselves, with different hair and make-up treatments.  They were individuals walking down a very busy and Chanel-ified street.  Dress however you want was what Lagerfeld seemed to be saying.  Great!

Then at the end of the show, the silence was broken by a faint yelling.  Cara Delevigne led the way with her loudspeaker, as all the models stormed the mock Boulevard with a mock protest.  Karl Lagerfeld, not holding a placard or banner, walked along coyly as if it were a joke and a ruse.  Some waved their banners and placards with half-baked enthusiasm (woe on models who are required to “act” – they mostly don’t have it in them).  Some were having a laugh with it.  Did they know what they were saying?  I doubt it.  Not with slogans like “Féministe mais Feminine”, “Votez for Coco”, “Divorce pour tous”, “Boys should get pregnant too” and “Tweed is better than tweet.”  What do they even mean?  More to the point, why is pointless activism being used to sell clothes, when elsewhere in the world, real isuses are being fought for with blood, sweat and tears?

I’ll quote some Instagram comments to solidify the point as they were so eloquent.

NonsenseonStilettos: This kind of co-opting of protests and the real concerns that have people out on the street, to drive Chanel’s particular brand of selling things, is in poor taste.

ModernNiche: Perhaps it is admiration of protestors past and present but essentially trivialises the real issues to sell clothes (or more likely beauty and fragrance) sold at some of the highest price point.

0E5A9647

When the banners got meatier and expressed a more intelligent feminist sentiment – “He for She” (in arch reference to Emma Watson’s UN speech), “Feminism not Masochism” and “Women’s Rights are More than Alright” the shit really hit the proverbial fan.  Whatever Lagerfeld’s true stance on feminism is, it is difficult to believe the conviction of a uniform cast of women, held up to an unrealistic standard of beauty, waving such banners, whilst wearing clothes that are prohibitively expensive.  Why go there, Karl?  To court controversy?  To get more Instagram likes?  I suspect it’s a combination of both.

Lounawt: It mocks any real struggle, it’s the bourgeoisie dressed up as the proletariat.  The presentation of the feminist movement as trendy or as though we have gender equality.

MelissaKateColeman: Feminism is a flat concept if we don’t use it to discuss current gender issues. In fact it distorts the conversation. This is not starting the conversation on feminism.  It’s a conversation what a luxury fashion brand can and cannot do in good conscience.  Just to be clear, if he’d really addressed issues I would have respected it regardless of his questionable past.  Sadly, he was just paying lipservice.

0E5A9650

Some have pointed out the fact that Lagerfeld – he of the controversial and often misogynist quotes – is in no position to even promote the cause of feminism.

MoreModelsofColorBullshit.  If you are for all women.  Cast older women, cast more models of colour – four black models is not enough and cast darker black models like Grace Bol, Nykhor Paul, Ataui and Ajak Deng, Ajuma Nasenyana, etc… Cast Indian models, cast more Latinas, cast more Asian models.  Embrace all women.  Have a more diverse cast if you are going to preach about feminism.  Cast plus-size models.  Stop it with racism, white supremacy and all the hypocritical-ness and pretentiousness.

0E5A0835

On the flipside,  some, including many big glossy title reviews, did credit Lagerfeld for driving awareness and starting conversations.  I myself had lengthy conversations with fellow editors about the show usually tailing off without any neat conclusion.

SansimAdali: On the contrary I find it beneficial for those who want to make themselves heard.  For example some of you now learned that Turkish women are suffering from gender inequality.  Maybe some of you are now watching Emma Watson’s UN speech #heforshe. I just checked the latest news about #occupyhongkong

I did love all the conversation and discussion that came out of the conversation but what is the final end result – that Chanel gets more bag sales because they “raised” a topic of discussion?

PowItsKim: Awareness isn’t really a valid argument? If there is no follow-up, there is such a great chance of doing more harm than good ultimately.  So he brought up, well, bombarded us with feminism, what are we now to do with that information?  Who is leading this dialogue?  The same skinny white women who are privileged by the system of fashion?

Thud.  There goes that line of defence.

Then there’s the other theory.  Was it all one big satire and was he in fact trolling feminists and political correctness in general?  Or poking fun at fashion designers that take themselves too seriously with their heavy-handed messaging?  Was Lagerfeld in fact acknowledging the real bottom line of why we’re all there to see fashion, which is that we’re all there to flog clothes and anything else is just a diversion?  Then all the discussion is moot and not in fact a positive contribution because they’ve just added to the page views, mentions of Chanel on Google and its search ranking and numbers of #ChanelProtest on social media, which in turn will lead to sales.  Which I’m fine with – that is what brands seek.  We’re all in the game and that’s how it’s played.  That said, it’s the callousness with regard to the real issues of feminism and the struggles going on right this second that makes my head spin.  But yes, what fun!   What larks because Instagram exploded with vids and pics.

And so, yes I have taken it all rather seriously and my knickers are in a big twist, even when I put aside my own personal entanglement with what is going on right now.  It left me in a conflicted position because – and I do want it this to be known – I shamelessly love Chanel.  I love its world and most things it touches with its glossy black, gold-edged, quilted hand.  Chanel’s presence on this blog is a whole-hearted genuine MUAH to the brand without any commercial ties.  Questioning what it does and its impact is demonstrative of how highly I regard it.  This is a house that can affect change if it really wants to.  It can go big on a protest and get behind a solid and genuine cause.  Of course, if Lagerfeld is indeed just poking fun at the idea of fashion effecting change as he did when he prodded the art world in a gallery or made fun of our love of a brand, so much so that we’d try and steal an empty CC-logoed biscuit tin in a fake supermarket, then I have nothing to say to that.  It’s the crème de la crème of all cynical moves that could so easily have been a positive one.

And then my other final final question would be, why all the fuss and the shit-stirring that essentially overshadowed the clothes?  Unlike some of the other Instagram commenters, I quite enjoyed the clobber and when I saw them in the showroom, even more so, because they weren’t hidden by placards or banners.  You saw superb craftsmanship and fabrications of the highest order and just a streamless unfettered indulgence of pretty pretty things (if perhaps a bit unedited).  They’re clothes that could definitely empower a woman but that idea is now dented by the images of those signs.  A woman rich enough to buy Chanel with her own hard earned £/$ will also be smart enough to know when she is being played by a man.  Why couldn’t he just have had all the models walk out with variations on the signs that read “Be your own stylist” and “Be different”- those are strong messages that didn’t get muddled up with all this click-baiting, Instagram trolling and knicker twisting.

"Asked in an open-ended question to name the most important issue currently facing the U.S., neither issue scored even 1 percent of responses. When asked how important each issue was personally, 43 percent of likely voters ranked abortion an important one, while 32 percent said that about same-sex marriage.

Nine in 10 likely voters in the survey said the economy was an important issue, outpacing rising concerns about terrorism, ongoing concerns about health care, and the social issues that have led to sharp clashes on the campaign trail."

6 in 10 oppose Obamacare.

"He argued that since the stopover in Minneapolis was en route to DC, that the sex solicitation was part of his "official business" and so he was entitled to use his campaign warchest to pay the lawyers who presented a series of increasingly farcical arguments in his defense. The FEC didn't buy it."
