Chop Chop: Farming Simulator 15′s Forestry

by Alice O'Connor

By Alice O'Connor on October 13th, 2014 at 9:00 am.

You can't run, tree.

Perhaps this is because I’m a city slicker, but I find something about this Farming Simulator 15 trailer very sinister. It’s showing off this year’s new woodcutting gear, and to me they all look like implements for terrible murder. One vehicle has a mighty arm for grabbing tall, thin, upright things and tugging them through a cruel mechanism stripping off limbs and sawing them into segments. A chainsaw to chase escapees down on foot. A chipper to Fargo what’s left.

Shhh, tree. Be quiet now. Good trees stand very still, tall and strong. Do you know what happens to bad trees, trees which run and scream and trample my corn? Be a good tree.

If we take it at face value, and trees are simply trees, simulated farmers see trees from cradle to grave. Or grave to cradle. They’ll cut trees down, saw them up, chip ‘em, process ‘em, transporting ‘em, then plant new ones amidst the stumps and sap. It’s still a little gruesome. That terrifying vehicle is named the ScorpionKing, for goodness’ sake. I don’t know if these are in the game, but now I’ll have nightmares about debarkers. All flesh is grass, and all skin is bark.

I might stick with the Skyrim Reforestation Project.

Farming Simulator is due just in time for Halloween, on October 30. Funny, that.

Farming Simulator 15, Focus Home Interactive, giants software.

3 US hospitals stopped Ebola from spreading. Why didn't Texas? - Vox

by gguillotte
"Ever since [2007] we've had a training program," says George Risi, who runs the country's fourth biocontainment unit, at St. Patrick's Hospital in Montana. His is the only unit that hasn't yet treated an Ebola patient, but his staff has spent years preparing for that moment. Every six months, they "do a workshop and also have periodic drilling." This isn't true of Texas Presbyterian. Like most American hospitals, it doesn't have a biocontamination unit. It hasn't spent years running through the drills of how to treat an Ebola patient. It began receiving additional training from the CDC, director Tom Frieden told reporters Sunday, only this week. "The care of Ebola can be done safely but its hard to do it safely," Frieden said in his Sunday press conference. "Even an innocent slip up can result in contamination."

Newswire: Twin Peaks’ Michael Horse says Sheriff Truman will come back for the new episodes

by Sam Barsanti

After 25 years of Twin Peaks-inspired fashion, Twin Peaks Pop Pilgrimages, Twin Peaks-themed B&Bs, Twin Peaks/Muppet mashups, Twin Peaks recreations on Twitter, Twin Peaks box sets, NES-style Twin Peaks intros, and however many Twin Peaks-related things that The A.V. Club hasn’t reported on, the show that inspired all of that crazy nonsense is finally coming back. Showtime announced just last week that it’s bringing Twin Peaks back for some kind of nine-episode continuation, with co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost fully on board. This being Twin Peaks, the project is still shrouded in secrecy, so while it seems like a safe assumption that guys like Kyle MacLachlan will return, we don’t really know for sure.

However, Michael Horse, who played Deputy Hawk in the original run of Twin Peaks, is certain that Michael Ontkean’s Sheriff Harry S. Truman is coming ...

Indians killed by lightning in Colombia to be left unburied - Yahoo News

by gguillotte
The 11 men were killed on Monday when lightning struck the hut during a ceremony, also injuring another 20 participants who suffered second and third degree burns. The Wiwas, a tribe that retreated into the Sierra Nevada of northern Colombia after the Spanish conquest, revere all aspects of nature and believe they are called to keep the world in balance. Some villagers saw the devastating lightning strike as a spiritual blow in response to "man's turning his back on nature," Lorenzo Gil, a survivor, told AFP this week.

The Forgotten Nazi Past Of America's Favorite Warplane

firehose

'none other than legendary Luftwaffe Colonel Hans-Ulrich Rudel was consulted to develop the Warthog ... it is an undeniable fact the he was an unrepentant Nazi and devotee of Adolf Hitler. After, the war Rudel—who became a relatively successful businessman--continued to advocate for the Third Reich and its genocidal, racist policies. One example of that: Rudel was a prominent member of the neo-Nazi German Reich Party from 1953 onward.'

this is what I get for liking warplanes

or anything apparently

The A-10 has been the favorite plane of American grunts for decades. But it was one of America’s most fearsome enemies who helped inspire the design of the so-called “Warthog.”

Despite Push From Tech Giants, AP CS Exam Counts Don't Budge Much In Most States

by timothy

"What is kind of surprising is how little the test numbers budged for most states — only 8 states managed to add more than 100 girls to the AP CS test taker rolls — despite the PR push by the tech giants, including Microsoft, Google, and, Facebook. Also worth noting are some big percentage decreases at the top end of the score segments (5 and 4), and still-way-too-wide gaps that exist between the score distributions of the College Board's various ethnic segments"

theodp (442580) writes "Well, the College Board has posted the 2014 AP Computer Science Test scores. So, before the press rushes out another set of Not-One-Girl-In-Wyoming-Took-an-AP-CS-Exam stories, let's point out that no Wyoming students of either gender took an AP CS exam again in 2014 (.xlsx). At the overall level, the final numbers have changed somewhat (back-of-the-Excel-envelope calculations, no warranty expressed or implied!), but tell pretty much the same story as the preliminary figures — the number of overall AP CS test takers increased, while pass rates decreased despite efforts to cherry pick students with a high likelihood of success. What is kind of surprising is how little the test numbers budged for most states — only 8 states managed to add more than 100 girls to the AP CS test taker rolls — despite the PR push by the tech giants, including Microsoft, Google, and, Facebook. Also worth noting are some big percentage decreases at the top end of the score segments (5 and 4), and still-way-too-wide gaps that exist between the score distributions of the College Board's various ethnic segments (more back of the envelope calcs). If there's a Data Scientist in the house, AP CS exam figures grabbed from the College Board's Excel 2013 and 2014 worksheets can be found here (Google Sheets) together with the (unwalkedthrough) VBA code that was used to collect it. Post your insight (and code/data fixes) in the comments!"

St. Vincent’s Annie Clark often draws comparisons to David Byrne for her quirky on-stage persona, but during yesterday’s performance at Austin City Limits, the purple-haired singer-songwriter gave her best impression of Eddie Vedder. When not wreaking total havoc with her guitar, Clark swung from stage scaffolding and dove into the audience to take people’s clothing, even ending up with someone’s crutch.

ChromeOS Will No Longer Support Ext2/3/4 On External Drives/SD Cards

by timothy

wokka wokka!

An anonymous reader writes Chrome OS is based on the Linux kernel and designed by Google to work with web applications and installed applications. Chromebook is one of the best selling laptops on Amazon. However, devs decided to drop support for ext2/3/4 on external drivers and SD card. It seems that ChromiumOS developers can't implement a script or feature to relabel EXT volumes in the left nav that is insertable and has RW privileges using Files.app. Given that this is the main filesystem in Linux, and is thereby automatically well supported by anything that leverages Linux, this choice makes absolutely no sense. Google may want to drop support for external storage and push the cloud storage on everyone. Overall Linux users and community members are not happy at all.

The Scablands: A scarred landscape as strange as fiction

by Scott K. Johnson
firehose

nice longread

EASTERN WASHINGTON—Traveling from the verdant, mossy coastal belt of the Pacific Northwest, one could be forgiven for feeling that the defining characteristic of Eastern Washington is its dryness. It's a land seemingly starved of rain in the shadow of the Cascade Mountains. But the dry landscape known as the “Scablands” actually tells a story about excess—excess of water, water that was torrential and sudden.

The Scablands are essentially wounds, still unhealed by time and erosion. They cut through the land and down into the rock after a series of unfathomably large floods unleashed by the catastrophic draining of great glacial lakes—half the volume of Lake Michigan splashed onto the land in less than a week. If you can imagine that, you’ve got us beat. The story recorded in this landscape is so incredible, it took one geologist decades to convince his colleagues that he was reading it correctly.

Inflation of the modern American vernacular has devalued superlatives like “awesome” and “epic,” but we’re going to need them where we’re going.

Owners want to adjust Roger Goodell's role, according to report

by Adam Stites
firehose

'the NFL should instead have a neutral arbitration panel selected by the league and NFL Players Association. Goodell's role would instead shift to that of an appellate officer who would come in to play if a player decided to appeal the punishment handed down by the panel'

Several NFL owners reportedly no longer want Roger Goodell to be the sole voice of player punishment.

Several NFL owners want to change the role of league commissioner Roger Goodell so that he is no longer the voice deciding initial player punishment for violation of league rules, according to a report from Chris Mortensen of ESPN.

During last week's league meetings, multiple owners suggested that instead of having Goodell be the sole voice that decides punishment for players, the NFL should instead have a neutral arbitration panel selected by the league and NFL Players Association. Goodell's role would instead shift to that of an appellate officer who would come in to play if a player decided to appeal the punishment handed down by the panel.

Mortensen said that union representatives "sounded dubious about the idea" and that the change would likely require collective bargaining.

Goodell has come under fire in 2014 for his decisions regarding player punishment; particularly, for a two-game suspension handed to former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice. After further evidence of Rice's domestic violence was released by TMZ, the suspension was extended indefinitely and Goodell admitted that he "didn't get it right."

According to Adam Schefter, NFL attorneys denied a request from the NFLPA to have Goodell testify in front of the U.S. district judge hearing and deciding Rice's appeal of his suspension.

Reggie Bush injury: Lions RB out vs. Vikings

by James Brady
firehose

time for Reggie Bush's biannual leg injury

Bush suffered an ankle injury in Week 5 that will keep him out against the Vikings.

Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush is inactive for Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings. Bush missed the entire week of practice with a sprained ankle and was listed as questionable on the official injury report. Bush sustained the injury in Week 5 against the Buffalo Bills. He had just six carries for 13 yards in that game.

Bush has struggled all season, and accordingly, the Lions have not been a particularly good running team. They rush for 83.6 yards per game on average, which ranks them No. 28 in the NFL. Bush happens to lead the way with 45 carries for 161 yards and a touchdown. Joique Bell has carried the ball 48 times for 152 yards and a touchdown of his own. Quarterback Matthew Stafford has run in two touchdowns himself.

It's Bell who will carry the load in Bush's absence. It seems likely that Bell would have received the bulk of the carries even if Bush, who was a game-time decision, had been active. There's no way Bush would have been 100 percent a week removed from a sprained ankle, so the Lions have likely been preparing for Bell to take on the primary role throughout the week. Minnesota isn't great against the run, allowing 121.8 rushing yards per game on average (19th in the league).

After suffering a concussion two weeks ago though, Bell likely won't shoulder the entire load and the Lions are expected to give Theo Riddick more touches. Through four games, the second-year back has just 22 yards rushing on six carries.

Tic Tac Toe with a twist

by Anton Kivva

via A

UPDATE / OCT, 15.

Further to this blog post, describing malicious functions of a mobile Trojan camouflaged as the TicTacToe game app, Lacoon Mobile Security company stated that TicTacToe was developed by them as a proof-of-concept.

Kaspersky Lab would like to reiterate, that as a security company, we detect all forms of malicious program, regardless of their origin or purpose. We recieved the samples through malware exchange with other antivirus companies and it was not marked as a proof-of-concept at this time. We saw several potentially malicious functions in this app – and a thorough analysis of TicTacToe revealed that the game code accounted for less than 30% of the executable file's size. The rest is functionality appeared for monitoring user and obtaining personal data. It is for this reason that we began the investigation and reported the incident to the public.

We respect and support other security companies who aspire to the development of mobile technologies, but we also believe that proof-of-concept programs should be marked clearly and shouldn't demonstrate fully-operational functions, to avoid situations where malicious users replicate the techniques.

Attempts by cybercriminals to disguise malware as useful applications are common to the point of being commonplace. However, the developers of Gomal, a new mobile Trojan, not only achieved a new level of camouflage by adding Tic Tac Toe game to their malicious program, but also implemented interesting techniques which are new to this kind of malware.

It all started with a Tic Tac Toe game being sent to us for analysis. At first glance, the app looked quite harmless:

Tic Tac Toe with a twist

However, the list of permissions requested by the game made us wonder. Why would it need to access the Internet, the user's contacts and the SMS archive or to be able to process calls and record sound? We analyzed the 'game' and it turned out to be a piece of multi-purpose spyware. The malicious app is now detected by Kaspersky Lab products as Trojan-Spy.AndroidOS.Gomal.a.

A thorough analysis of the malicious program showed that the game code accounts for less than 30% of the executable file's size. The rest is functionality for spying on the user and stealing personal data.

Game code is marked in green, malicious functionality – in red

Game code is marked in green, malicious functionality – in red

What does this functionality include? First and foremost, the malware has sound recording functions, which are now standard for mobile spyware:

Tic Tac Toe with a twist

It also has SMS-stealing functionality:

Tic Tac Toe with a twist

In addition, the Trojan collects information about the device and sends all the data collected to its masters' server. But Trojan-Spy.AndroidOS.Gomal.a has something really curious up its sleeve – a package of interesting libraries distributed with it.

Tic Tac Toe with a twist

The package includes an exploit used to obtain root privileges on the Android device. The extended privileges give the app access to various services provided by Linux (the operating system on which Android is based), including the ability to read process memory and /maps.

After obtaining root access, the Trojan gets down to work. For example, it steals emails from Good for Enterprise, if the app is installed on the smartphone. The application is positioned as a secure email client for corporate use, so the theft of data from it can mean serious problems for the company where the owner of the device works. In order to attack Good for Enterprise, the Trojan uses the console to get the ID of the relevant process (ps command) and reads virtual file /proc/ /maps. The file contains information about memory blocks allocated to the application.

Tic Tac Toe with a twist

After getting the list of memory blocks, the malware finds the block [heap] containing the application's string data and creates its dump using one more library from its package. Next, the dump file created is searched for signatures characteristic of emails and the messages found are sent to the cybercriminals' server.

Gomal also steals data from logcat – the logging service built into Android that is used for application debugging. Developers very often have their applications outputting critically important data to Logcat even after the apps have been released. This enables the Trojan to steal even more confidential data from other programs.

As a result, the seemingly harmless game of Tic Tac Toe gives cybercriminals access to an enormous amount of the user's personal data and corporate data belonging to his employer. The techniques used by Gomal were originally implemented in Windows Trojans, but now, as we can see, they have moved on to Android malware. And, most dangerously, the principles upon which this technique is based can be used to steal data from applications other than Good for Enterprise – it is likely that a range of mobile malware designed to attack popular email clients, messengers and other programs will appear in the near future.

To reduce the risk of infection by mobile malware we recommend that users:

  • Do not activate the "Install applications from third-party sources" option
  • Only install applications from official channels (Google Play, Amazon Store, etc.)
  • When installing new apps, carefully study which rights they request
  • If the requested rights do not correspond with the app's intended functions, do not install the app
  • Use protection software

Update:

Trojan-Spy.AndroidOS.Gomal.a uses an old version of the exploit, which is effective on Samsung devices running Android 4.0.4 or earlier. This particular version of the malware could not successfully attack a corporate email client on devices with newer firmware.
So far, we have not seen any attempts to infect our users with the Gomal Trojan. However, even though this sample is not currently active in-the-wild, we detect it so we will be able to block any future attacks by mobile malicious programs based on this proof-of-concept malware.

The Cover of Wonder Woman #38 is A Bloody Mess

dcwomenkickingass:

Half of Wonder Woman’s team, Meredith the writer, was chatting up the new book at NYCC including this interview from VOX:

"David did not intend to say that she’s not a feminist," she said, explaining that Wonder Woman, like feminism, has evolved since the character was created. Finch says that her husband was just trying to make clear that there was no mandate from execs at DC to take Wonder Woman and create a token and hollow-feeling Wonder Woman, who would ultimately make for an empty female empowerment story.

"The experiences women are having in the 21st Century are very different from the experiences Wonder Woman had when she was created. So we just want to focus on telling a strong female story, that I can relate to as a woman, and really, everyone can relate to," she said.

So the meme now is that it isn’t about “Feminism” is now about not making her a “token and hollow-feeling Wonder Woman.”

Funny when Gail Simone wrote her as a feminist that didn’t happen.

Of course women’s experiences are different than when the character was created. But is that meant to suggest the need for feminism has gone away? Can women not relate to men and women being equal?

Really not getting the thought process from this team.

Anyway, in their their hunt to make Wonder Woman someone “everyone can relate to” here’s a cover by Finch from the January issue.

image

Oh, I can TOTALLY relate to this.
