Special Topics In Gameology: Mon is the measure of all things: Unraveling Pokémon’s utopian economy

by Patrick Lee

Special Topics In Gameology explores a specific corner of the gaming world in a miniseries of articles. This article debuts the latest edition of the feature—commerce—in which we’ll examine games’ representation and use of business and trade.

People eat Pokémon, right? It’s one of the first grim realizations to be had about the world of Nintendo’s critter-collecting games. There are no cows to provide beef, but there are Miltanks. There are no salmon or cod, just Magikarps. There is no poultry, but there are Farfetch’ds—who go so far as to garnish themselves with green onions. Vegetarianism isn’t safe, either, thanks to the existence of the plant-like Grass type Pokémon. It’s not just food. All animal products have to come from Pokémon—silk must be spun by Caterpies, wool harvested from Mareeps, honey collected from the hives of Combees by master Combeekeepers ...

AEP : Blitab: World's first tactile tablet is 'iPad for the blind'

blitab braille tablet blind
The Blitlab tablet converts files and web pages into braille and relief images for blind and visually impaired people(IBTimes UK)

The first-ever braille tablet has been developed, using a new liquid-based technology to create tactile relief outputting braille, graphics and maps for the blind and partially sighted.

Austria-based startup Blitab Technology claims the "revolutionary" technology could be used to open up the digital era to the visually impaired, with plans to develop a braille smartphone.

"We are creating the first tactile tablet for blind and visually impaired people," Slavi Slavev, chief technology officer and co-founder of Blitab Technology, told IBTimes UK at the Hello Tomorrow Conference in Paris. "What we are doing is creating a completely new technology which outputs braille in a completely new and innovative way without any mechanical elements.

Tactile relief is created instantly through small liquid bubbles on the screen(Blitab)

"This is revolutionary and we want to solve a great issue, and that's the literacy of blind people. The technology is quite scalable so we can output images and put any tactile relief representation like maps and graphics, such as geometric figures, in order to serve as an educational tool for blind people."

Other devices currently on the market are mechanical and only allow for one line of braille to be generated at any one time. They also cost about three-times the price of the €2,500 (£1,778, $2,802) Blitab. More recent refreshable braille concepts, such as the Anagraph e-reader, have run out of funds before being able to bring the product to market.

The Blitab tablet uses liquid bubbles to instantly generate braille text or relief images, while the corresponding technology allows text files to be instantly converted into braille from USB sticks, web browsers or NFC tags.

Refreshable braille devices currently on the market only offer one line and are typically expensive(Hims)

"Currently there are some solutions which are extremely expensive and they represent only one line [of braille]," Slavev said. "These devices were developed 40 years ago and because no one has offered any new innovations since then, that's still all that's on the market."

In the UK, interest in the Blitab has been shown by the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) and Barclays bank, due to its potential for helping blind and partially-sighted customers instore.

Blitab is currently in the prototyping stage but if the ongoing investment round is successful the startup is hoping to bring the first product to market by September 2016.

Slavev added: "We think blind people should be included in the digital era in which we live, with all of the smartphones and tablets, but also ensure that they have a proper way to do everything that sighted people do, like web browsing, reading books and downloading books.

"Only 1% of all books worldwide are available in printed braille, as it's very expensive to produce printed braille. Some people are even saying that braille is decreasing among blind people but we want to get to the point where we can actually change this."

Watch Deus Ex's creators play Deus Ex

Well this is rather lovely. In recognition of Deus Ex's 15 years of existence, Square Enix gathered up game director Warren Spector (hey, that rhymes!), lead programmer Chris Norden and principal writer Sheldon Pacotti, and recorded them playing their own game. It's 50 minutes long, and encompasses the entirety of the first mission followed by select highlights from the rest of the game. It's a fascinating look at one of PC gaming's enduring classics, and contains plenty of behind-the-scenes insight and reflection.

Also, you get to see Warren Spector's expression when confronted with the technical limitations of a 15-year-old game:

Deus Ex

I'd like to take a moment to apologise to all the people who have just had their weekend plans ruined by a sudden urge to replay Deus Ex.

How A Young Joe Biden Turned Liberals Against Integration

firehose

JJB

40 years ago, a contentious battle over racial justice gripped Capitol Hill, pitting the nation’s lone African-American senator against a young Joe Biden. The issue was school busing, a plan to transport white and black students out of their neighborhoods to better integrate schools — and at the time the most explosive issue on the national agenda.

Houses of the near future can replace stairs with this Star Trek-like elevator

by Gabriel Fisher
firehose

I bet this started as a shower stall on a garage door opener or something

The new Terry Lifestyle Lift

Aging Star Trek enthusiasts are in luck.

There is now a futuristic elevator on the market that bears a strong resemblance to the lifts of the classic TV show.

Terry Lifts, a British elevator company, has designed a compact hexagonal-shaped box that can transport people from floor to floor. The company is marketing the elevator as an elegant replacement for a stairlift, which it argues is both an uglier and more permanent addition than the Terry Lifestyle Lift.

“You could describe it as a high-end chair lift. People don’t want, in many cases, a chair-lift on their beautiful staircase and they don’t necessarily want a lift,” John McSweeney, marketing director for Terry Lifts, told Reuters. He added that “it’s never the elephant in the room.”

A spokesperson for the company tells Quartz that the contraption can be installed in a few days and easily removed when, say, a house is sold to another owner.

It wins extra brownie points for its Star-Trek look, which the company says was not intentional. (That comparison beats the one made by people who say it looks like a shower cubicle, the company tells Quartz.)

So far, the company has sold more than 200 lifts, many to customers overseas.

'Wiccan Ritual Killing' Leaves Family of Three Dead in Pensacola: Police

firehose

ok, sure

When asked how the evidence suggests these are ritualistic or Wiccan killings Sgt. Hobbes said, "The injuries to the victims, the positions of the bodies and also the person of interest right now is also a practitioner."

According to Hobbes, Richard Smith worked for Homeland Security and a supervisor contacted the sheriff's office, who dispatched a unit to check the home at 4605 Deerfield Drive in Pensacola.

Authorities believe the trio was killed sometime after 7:00 p.m ET, on the previous Tuesday, three days earlier.

Police are continuing their investigation.

"It's frightening to think about. Especially when you have small children," neighbor Ken Lester said, according to affiliate WECT. "To find out that it was this weird, satanic cult, witchcraft whatever, is just really unsettling."

Etsy’s market value is evaporating after reporting more losses

by Shelly Banjo

'Etsy also warned that it didn’t expect to make a profit anytime soon'

'investors expressed concerns over an influx of counterfeit goods and realized the hyped-up company wasn’t profitable'

Wave goodbye to market value.

Etsy is coming apart at the seams.

Shares of the online seller of handcrafted goods dropped by 13% in after-hours trading (following a 6% loss during the day) on Tuesday after the company reported a $6.4 million second-quarter loss.

Etsy also warned that it didn’t expect to make a profit anytime soon: The strong dollar is dampening demand from buyers outside the US and Etsy plans to increase spending on marketing and hiring.

The company, whose shares are down 36% since going public in April, took a bath last quarter after investors expressed concerns over an influx of counterfeit goods and realized the hyped-up company wasn’t profitable. (The decline jumps to 45% including today’s after-hours trading.)

And those losses seem to be deepening.

No matter, says Etsy. The company said it is establishing the “foundation for the long-term value we expect to create for our entire community, including our investors, for decades to come.” It points out that the number of active buyers and sellers on its marketplace grew by more than 24%, while revenue rose by 44.4% from the year before to $61 million.

The Rent is Too Damn High: San Fran Residents Pay $1,000/Mth To Live In Shipping Containers

by Tyler Durden

'It’s not even San Francisco proper either, this is in Oakland'

popular shared this story from Zero Hedge.

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

There’s nothing quite like a grotesquely lopsided “economic recovery” in which a handful of cities boom, while the rest of the nation stagnates. Even worse, millennials living in such chosen cities face one of two options. Either live in mom and dad’s basement, or face a standard of living far more similar to 19th tenement standards than the late 1990’s tech boom.

With that out of the way, I want to introduce you to what a $1,000 per month rental in the San Francisco Bay area looks like. Shipping containers:

Screen Shot 2015-08-03 at 10.41.45 AM

Don’t worry, there’s a lovely garden out back:

Screen Shot 2015-08-03 at 10.41.59 AM

We learn more from Bloomberg:

Luke Iseman has figured out how to afford the San Francisco Bay area. He lives in a shipping container.

The Wharton School graduate’s 160-square-foot box has a camp stove and a shower made of old boat hulls. It’s one of 11 miniature residences inside a warehouse he leases across the Bay Bridge from the city, where his tenants share communal toilets and a sense of adventure. Legal? No, but he’s eluded code enforcers who rousted what he calls cargotopia from two other sites. If all goes according to plan, he’ll get a startup out of his response to the most expensive U.S. housing market.

“It’s not making us much money yet, but it allows us to live in the Bay Area, which is a feat,” said Iseman, 31, who’s developing a container-house business. “We have an opportunity here to create a new model for urban development that’s more sustainable, more affordable and more enjoyable.”

As many as 60,000 San Franciscans live in illegal housing, according to the Department of Building Inspection.

Iseman collects $1,000 a month for each of the 11 structures parked in the 17,000-square-foot warehouse he rents for $9,100. Tenants include a Facebook Inc. engineer, a SolarCity Corp. programmer and a bicycle messenger.

It’s not even San Francisco proper either, this is in Oakland. You could probably catch $2k per month for a cargo box in the Mission.

Iseman used to pay $4,200 a month in San Francisco’s Mission District for a two-bedroom apartment with a slanted floor and mosquito-breeding puddles.

He bought his metal box for $2,300, delivery included, then cut out windows with a plasma torch and installed a loft bed, shower and bamboo flooring. He estimates his all-in cost at $12,000, and plans to sell refashioned containers for about $20,000 through his company, Boxouse.

“What we’re doing is converting industrial waste into a house in a couple of weeks,” said Iseman, who also founded a pedicab fleet. Meanwhile, he doesn’t plan on seeking city approval for cargotopia, whose location he asked not be identified. “I’d rather ask forgiveness than ask permission.”

I want to be clear that I’m not knocking Mr. Iseman for starting this project. He seems to be a well-meaning, entrepreneurial guy trying to make the best out of a bad situation and solve a very real problem on his own. What I am knocking is the criminally corrupt American oligarchy, which left this legacy to our youth due to their unfathomable greed, cronyism and nearsightedness.

Of course, I’ve covered this trend several times over the past several years…

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is reportedly thinking about running for president

by Alice Truong

howard schultz

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is reportedly considering a run for the US presidency.

Two recent reports suggest the CEO and chairman of the world’s largest coffee chain is at the very least thinking about the idea. In a column published Aug. 1, the New York Times’s Maureen Dowd reported that friends have been urging Schultz to enter the Democratic primary, directly challenging Hillary Clinton.

Sharon Waxman, editor-in-chief of TheWrap, added fuel to the speculation on August 3, drawing on her personal connection to Schultz, whose venture firm is an investor in her publication. Though she acknowledges that Schultz lacks political experience, she provides a resounding endorsement of his leadership. “If you have ever seen the Starbucks CEO in action, you’d see that he’s a political natural,” she writes.

But it’s unclear whether Schultz is ready to pull the trigger. In April, Schultz told Fast Company: “I have no desire to be in an elected position in government. That’s not what I’m trying to do.” Starbucks officials weren’t immediately available to comment on the recent news reports.

How Baseball’s Tech Team Built The Future Of Television

"... the internet, as a technology, was never designed to do something like this — deliver flawless video simultaneously to millions of people." Inzerillo explains. "I liken it to trying to live on Mercury. The planet is completely inhospitable. Every day all you’re doing is [fighting] a battle for survival in a place that really does not want you. Streaming video on the internet is sort of like that."
