Is that Malala or Mindy Kaling? Take our quiz | World news | theguardian.com

by djempirical

Can you tell the difference between Mindy Kaling and Malala? Well, one man can't. According to the New York Times, a 'tipsy man in his 80s' mistook the 35-year-old US comedian for the 17-year-old activist at a party in Manhattan last month.

The unidentified drinker told the Mindy Project star 'Congratulations on your Nobel prize', before expressing amazement at how well she had recovered from being shot by the Taliban.

Kaling's response: 'Did he really think I'm Malala? And that if I were, I'd be at the Boom Boom Room?'

She's not the first non-white person to be mistaken for another. But here's a quiz to prove how easy it is not to make the same mistake …

The Marvellous Miss Take Is Stylish, Make No Mistake

by Graham Smith

By Graham Smith on October 27th, 2014 at 8:00 pm.

I experimented with crime once, attempting to take a free leaflet out of a magazine in a WH Smith without first buying the magazine. I got nervous and shaky and put the leaflet back before I could complete the crime, prompting a lifelong fascination with cons, capers, heists and the detectives that solve them. The Marvellous Miss Take pushes all those buttons formed by a childhood wasted in safe, law-abiding conformity, by being about a woman in a fabulous hat dodging guards, cameras and snuffling hounds to steal a museum’s-worth of art. Steal a glance at the trailer below.

That soundtrack! That art style! I could use some stealth mechanics in my life that weren’t tiring metaphors or about grimly slitting necks. I could use more games that look like they’re inspired by Hanna-Barbera cartoons.

There’s a pleasing amount of variety in the video also, both in the obstacles – I like the old ladies who tattle on you – and in your abilities, which seem to extend as far as an Unreal Tournament-style tossable teleportation disc.

I know very little else about the game besides, except that it was at both the Eurogamer and MCM Expos, which means that you might have played it while I have not. And you didn’t think to tell me, which is a thing we’ll have to talk about sternly later. I do know that the game is being made by a team of former Lionhead devs under the banner of Wonderstruck Games, the same people responsible for crowdfunded Minecraftbut Oort Online. I much prefer the look and style of Miss Take.

Listen to the bizarrely good Aphex Twin / Taylor Swift mashup album

by Jacob Kastrenakes

Both Aphex Twin and Taylor Swift are back with new albums this year, and how better to celebrate that than an entire album mashing up some of the two artists' biggest hits. Cartoonist David Rees, known for his long-running series Get Your War On, has put together an eight-track album that he's calling Aphex Swift, combing songs like "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" with "Girl/Boy" and "I Knew You Were Trouble" with "4." The two artists' may not have the biggest overlap in their fan bases, but this might just be enough to bring them together.

In a blog post introducing the album, Rees says that he actually sees the two artists as quite similar. He explains that his thesis was twofold: "Aphex Twin is as big a romantic cornball as Taylor Swift" and "Taylor Swift is as scary as Aphex Twin." Rees writes that Aphex Twin's beats often feel like someone protecting their "bleeding heart." Swift, on the other hand, "is what happens when Skynet becomes self-aware." All of which is to say this may not be the most obvious pairing, but it's kind of amazing.

If you're looking for more of either artist after this, well, you're probably already set on Swift, but here's the playlist you should go to for Aphex Twin.

The FBI thinks it has found Glenn Greenwald's second leaker

by Russell Brandom

As Glenn Greenwald's The Intercept continues to publish secret government documents, some of which go beyond the initial NSA documents leaked by Edward Snowden, speculation has grown concerning a second leaker smuggling classified documents to the publication. After a recent law enforcement raid, that speculation seems to be confirmed. Yahoo's Michael Isikoff reports that the FBI has identified a contractor who may be responsible for leaking documents about abuses in the government's terrorist tracking system, as detailed in this Intercept report. According to Isikoff, the suspect's home has been searched and federal prosecutors in northern Virginia have opened a criminal investigation into the matter.

The initial leaks revealed that more than half of the people identified in the FBI's terrorist tracking database had no clear affiliation with a terrorist group, suggesting real problems for the database as a law enforcement tool. As a result, many have viewed the source as whistleblower acting in the public interest. The Obama administration has been notoriously eager to prosecute whistleblowers in the name of national security, but Isikoff's report suggests the administration has grown less eager to prosecute the cases. Still, with Snowden still facing espionage charges, it remains to be seen what will happen to other officials who have made the leap to reveal government misconduct.

Newswire: Downton Abbey may be forced to eradicate Isis (the dog)

by Sean O'Neal

Much as our own modern, polite society has been forced to deal with the intrusion of ISIS with grim determination and a stiff upper lip, so too must the family of Downton Abbey deal with its own Isis threat—specifically, that viewers may confuse the terrorist group, ISIS, with its beloved dog, Isis.

As reported by The Independent, the show, currently airing its fifth season in the U.K., began hinting that the Labrador’s days may be numbered in a recent episode, where [spoiler alert regarding an occasionally glimpsed dog] Lord and Lady Grantham note that Isis is looking “terribly listless” and not at all interested in normal dog things, such as sniffing out scandalous disregard for propriety or sending telegrams. And, as every seemingly innocuous conversation on Downton Abbey must immediately be read as a looming portent of disaster, it stands to reason that Isis may soon die ...

Newswire: James Franco’s Tommy Wiseau movie hires Fault In Our Stars writers

by Ignatiy Vishnevetsky

James Franco has directed his share of bizarre, art-damaged vanity projects: a pseudo-documentary about a reimagining of the deleted scenes from Cruising; a hicksploitation take on an early Cormac McCarthy novel; a split-screen, video-installation-like adaptation of As I Lay Dying. However, none of these is as intriguing as Franco’s ongoing project to adapt The Disaster Artist, Greg Sestero’s memoir about the making of The Room and his friendship with its writer-director-star, Tommy Wiseau.

In the 1990s, Sestero, a male model and struggling actor, met and befriended Wiseau––a vampire-like self-styled auteur and discount fashions entrepreneur of unknown, probably Polish origins––and ended up playing one of the lead roles in his magnum opus, a bizarre San Francisco-set melodrama whose aggressively vague plotting, overlong sex scenes, and out-of-nowhere Rebel Without A Cause references have spawned the modern era’s definitive bad-movie cult.

Now The Wrap is reporting that Franco ...

by gguillotte
Sleeping in Airports also ranked the worst airports in North America.  LAX came in as the second most hated airport in America after LGA. In fact, all three major New York City metro area airports—Newark, JFK and LaGuardia—got bad marks. And Las Vegas’ McCarran, at number 9, is generally despised for the constant chiming from slot machines.

Discarded Power Mac G5s 'Upcycled' Into Modern Office Furniture [Mac Blog]

by Kelly Hodgkins

via Albener Pessoa
"an entire office full of furniture designed around old Power Mac G5 units"

Apple's Power Mac G5 has a distinctive aluminum design that was disruptive when it launched in 2003. Inspired by this milestone in design, designer Klaus Geiger has "upcycled" this aging Apple hardware into furniture because the machines are "simply too good to be disposed of." (via DesignBoom)

power_mac_g5_bench
As part of a project aptly titled "Benchmarc", Geiger has carefully created a sitting bench using a carved wooden plank that forms a bridge between two Power Mac G5 units. The machining on the wood is aligns the curve perfectly with the shape of the Power Mac chassis.

power_mac_g5_table_drawers
Beyond benches, Geiger also has crafted a movable conference table, file cabinets and more using discarded Power Mac machines. Additional concept renderings include an entire office full of furniture designed around old Power Mac G5 units.

Though interesting as a one-off furniture design project, this isn't the first time Apple hardware has been recycled. Both the iMac and the Mac Pro have been converted into fish aquariums, while a Power Mac G3 became an unusual roadside mailbox.

The New Face of Transgender Youth - Yahoo News

by gguillotte
Jazz Jennings was born a boy, but started to show leanings toward a feminine side at only 15 months old. By age 2, Jazz started to verbalize her feelings that "she was a girl," and by 5 she was one of the youngest people ever to be diagnosed with gender dysphoria ― a persistent unease with the characteristics of one's gender, accompanied by a strong identification with the opposite gender.

Sex at a Four-Year Video Game College | Motherboard

of course it's Vice

DigiPen currently enrolls 1,200 students; 80 percent are male, 20 percent are female. The female students, numerically speaking, tend to be found in art and animation, and much less in programming, where the sex ratio skews even more male. Ask some students what DigiPen stands for, and they tell you: Digital Penis.  I wanted to know, in light of discussions around gender and games having reached a fever pitch, what social life is like for the young people studying video games under these asymmetrical conditions. What, if anything, does the traditionally male-dominated nature of video gaming bring to bear on dating at video game school?

Taking inspiration from the fear of Ebola, a Dallas-area man has stacked up barrels marked "biohazard," surrounded his yard with yellow caution tape and crossed his door and windows with white tape marked "quarantine." "There's negative people everywhere and they are going to give me grief about it but it's all in good fun," James Faulk told reporters Thursday while standing outside his home wearing a face shield and white protective suit with the label "CDC Trainee" and gripping a clipboard and red plastic bag marked "biohazard infectious waste."

the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun

A shooting at Marysville-Pilchuck High School Friday afternoon left one victim and the gunman himself dead. Four other victims were hospitalized with gunshot wounds. The student shooter was allegedly motivated by a spoiled romance.  “I believe (teacher Megan Silberberger is) actuality the real hero. She’s the one that intercepted him with the gun. He tried either reloading or tried aiming at her. She tried moving his hand away and he tried shooting and shot himself in the neck,” Cervantes said.

welcome to New Orleaoh wait we spent all that money on a safety who played 1/4 of the season, did nothing, and got hurt

On Sunday, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that this would be Lynch's last year in Seattle. The report was seconded by SI's Peter King and others. Lynch is owed $7 million next year, but Mortenson says the salary is only part of the reason Lynch won't be back.  "The organization has grown tired of his ways, including pulling a no-show at the White House Super Bowl ceremony, his training camp holdout, and his possible contribution to locker-room distractions," Mortenson reports. There also appears to be a personal rift between Lynch and head coach Pete Carroll. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said on Sunday that Lynch and Carroll don't speak:
