Have You Played… Left 4 Dead 2?

By Adam Smith on January 12th, 2015 at 3:30 pm.

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

Of all games, Left 4 Dead and its sequel might well be the ones I miss the most. Sure, I could still play them today if I wanted to, but who would play them with me? They’re two of the smartest and most atmospheric cooperative games I’ve ever played, but I tend to tip my hat at a slightly more approving angle in the direction of the second because it has a wonderful sense of place. It also has improved zombie gore.

The basics of Left 4 Dead are brilliant – the AI director mixing up the threats on each attempt, the desperate rush to save a fallen companion, the red rain that follows the BEEP BEEP BOOM of a pipe bomb. Back when Left 4 Dead 2 was part of my daily diet, I invented all kinds of survival scenarios, games within games that sometimes required mods but more often simply required other players willing to experiment with odd, self-imposed rules.

But putting the actual shooting and surviving to one side, Left 4 Dead 2 earns its place in the pantheon of greats thanks to the beauty of its environments and the way that it uses a place as a theme. I love that the familiar musical stings from the first game have been recreated, Southern style, and that an organ adds a delirious quality to The Passing’s horde attacks while a banjo frantically attempts to keep up with the panicked drums of Dead Center. Then there’s The Parish.

The look of the game is as strong as the audio. The passage of time from one act to the next is noticeable in the changing quality and level of light, and the transition throughout Swamp Fever and Hard Rain is as attractive as any weather pattern I’ve ever seen in a game.

And, yes, I preferred the new characters to the original four. Nick had a proper arc and everything!

feature, Have You Played, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Valve.

Here is a Slime ice tray ⊟

I’ve resisted posting this for several days, to avoid perpetuating the image of myself as a man obsessed, unable to divest myself from the all-consuming need for Dragon Quest Slime goods. But I am weak. Maybe not weak enough to buy this (yet) but I can no longer ignore it!

So you could make Slime ice in this. You could also make Slime chocolate, Slime soap, anything else you’d put in a mold! P cool. It’s on NCSX and Amiami! Thanks to nintendotweet for first pointing it out.

Damian Lillard's MVP hopes rise with each clutch shot

by Jason Patt
firehose

DAME

The Portland Trail Blazers' star is putting himself in the MVP picture with each big shot.

Stephen Curry and James Harden remain neck-and-neck for the top spot after Curry regained it in last week's NBA MVP Power Rankings. But another Western Conference guard is hot on their heels. Read on to find out who.

1. Stephen Curry (Last week: 1)

Curry posted two double-doubles in a light week for the juggernaut that is the Warriors. Golden State throttled both Indiana and Cleveland, and Curry totaled 44 points and 25 assists in the two wins.

Looking at the bigger picture, Curry's on/off splits are absurd. The Warriors have been a whopping 22.2 points per 100 possessions better with the point guard on the court this season, per NBA.com. That's how you become a front-runner for MVP.

2. James Harden (Last week: 2)

After a couple poor shooting performances, Harden has bounced back in his last three games with superb efforts. He averaged over 28 points and nearly seven assists while shooting nearly 57 percent in three Rockets victories.

While Harden currently sits at No. 2 in these rankings, you wouldn't get an argument from me if you wanted to put him at the top. It's neck-and-neck between Curry and Harden at this point and should be the rest of the season. Other players could butt in, but those two have the inside track on the award.

3. Anthony Davis (Last week: 3)

It continues to be impossible to move Davis down despite the Pelicans' mediocrity. New Orleans went 1-2 over the last week, but Davis averaged 33 points and nearly 11 rebounds in the two losses. It's tough to blame losses on a guy who does that. He was also solid in an impressive victory over Memphis.

In addition to being awesome in general, Davis has excelled in the clutch this season. The big man is 19-of-25 when the game is within five points with under five minutes to play, per NBA.com. The question is why Davis has only taken 25 shots in the clutch and Tyreke Evans has taken 35 while only making eight.

4. Damian Lillard (Last week: 7)

Don't look now, but the Blazers are 30-8, which is tied for the second-best record in the NBA. Lillard was already a star in the making in his first two seasons, but now he's making the leap to superstardom.

Lillard's PER has gone up over four points in his third year, as he has become a more efficient scorer despite upping his usage. His true shooting percentage is a shade under 60 percent, nearly three points above last year. In addition to the more efficient scoring, the 24-year-old has improved as a rebounder and is at nearly five boards per game, which would be a career-high.

5. Marc Gasol (Last week: 5)

Gasol has held steady for much of the season, although his numbers have dipped a bit in January. Gasol is averaging 16 points, seven rebounds and three asissts this month, which is solid, but not nearly as good as the 20/9/4 line he put up in December.

The Grizzlies are just 5-7 in their last 12 games, and while injuries to Zach Randolph and Tony Allen didn't help, Gasol isn't blameless. While Gasol was still good, Memphis could have used more from him on both ends of the floor to help overcome the injuries.

6. John Wall (Last week: 8)

The Hawks game wasn't a great look for Wall, as he turned the ball over eight times in a 31-point loss. But Wall was his typical self in an impressive blowout victory over the Bulls the game before and he has been dynamite all season. Wall is shooting just under 46 percent on the season and leads the league in assists per game at 10.3. Both marks would be career-highs.

Similar to Curry in Golden State, Washington is worlds better with Wall on the floor. The difference isn't quite as vast, but it's close. The Wizards have been 18.5 points per 100 possessions better with Wall on the court this season, per NBA.com.

7. Jimmy Butler (Last week: 4)

Butler rose up to No. 4 last week, but he drops several rungs down this time due to regression in his shooting that should have been expected. He had been hovering close to 50 percent for much of the season and it simply wasn't reasonable to expect that to be sustained over a full year given his career to date.

Butler shot just 33 percent over the last five games, although curiously, he shot over 36 percent from three during that span. If Butler can regain his form from two-point range while also shooting that percentage from three, he'll be even more dangerous.

8. Kyle Lowry (Last week: 6)

Lowry's efficiency began to plunge several weeks ago and that troubling trend continued this past week. The point guard is shooting under 37 percent in January. Not coincidentally, the Raptors are 1-4 this month.

It also doesn't help that Toronto is currently playing defense at almost league-worst levels. Lowry isn't helping in that regard, as he has posted a defensive rating of 114.1 in the last five games, per NBA.com.

9. Klay Thompson (Last week: 11)

Thompson's transformation into a legitimate star player took another step forward with his second 40-point performance of the season last week. Thompson poured in 40 points on 14-of-25 shooting in the beatdown of the Pacers.

Making Thompson's scoring average of nearly 22 points per game even more impressive is the fact that he's doing it in under 33 minutes per game. He's putting up almost 24 points per 36 minutes and his PER is over six points higher than last year, all with a usage rate over four points higher than last year.

10. Jeff Teague (Last week: Unranked)

The Hawks don't really have a "star" player, but it's about time somebody gets recognized for their unbelievable 29-8 start. That honor will go to Teague, who has run Mike Budenholzer's offense in Atlanta to near perfection.

Teague's efficiency has taken a huge leap this season, as his true shooting percentage is near 60 percent and his PER is just under 23. Prior to this year, his career-best true shooting percentage was just over 55 percent and his career-best PER was a tick over 17.

Teague has also been stellar on the defensive end as part of the Hawks' sixth-ranked defense. He leads the team in steals and Atlanta has been better on that end with him on the floor.

Next 5: LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Blake Griffin, LaMarcus Aldridge, Pau Gasol

MOAR Oregon Breweries That Reject IPAs!!

by Andrea Damewood

A while back, I wrote about how there were some five-odd Oregon brewers—out of about 200 total—who have the cojones to NOT make an IPA.

I hedged my bets in that story, knowing there would be a few more brave souls to crawl out of the foxholes to shout it loud that they too do not brew the bitter IPAs. Most of them were pointed out on Twitter. And some people were wrong.

I was told that tiny Arch Rock Brewing Company in Gold Beach, which turned heads when it pulled down the award for the country’s No. 1 German-style unfiltered lager at the 2014 Great American Beer Fest, is an IPA-free zone. Not true, says brewer James Smith. “I did one because people were bugging me to do one for about eight months,” he says. He made Adipose IPA, after the fin cut off hatchery fish. “I probably won’t make one for a while, because they’re not my favorite style.”

More examples after the jump... but first... a legally binding poll!

Same goes for Portland’s Buckman Botanical Brewery, which has never made an IPA on its own, but has done collaboration IPAs during over its five years, a spokeswoman says.

But I did miss a couple. In particular, I overlooked Ambacht Brewing in Hillsboro, which has the somewhat erroneous slogan: “Oregon’s only brewery without an IPA!”

Ambacht, which sells at New Seasons Markets in Southeast and Southwest Portland, as well as at the Beaverton Farmers’ Market, does Belgian style brews, says co-owner Tom Kramer. He rejected the idea of brewing a Belgian-style IPA, calling them “nasty.” Most of his beers stay under 20 IBUs, Kramer says.
“I like some IPAs, and I appreciate them,” Kramer says. “But our other slogan is, the world doesn’t need another one.”

At Fire Cirkl in White City, which skirts the line between beer and wine, making a style of mead with malted grain and honey, Managing Member James Romano summed it up this way in an email: “I will never ever make an IPA. Never have. Amen.”

Cheers, dude.

The tech elite have already given big to California's newest Senate candidate - VentureBeat

'She’s known to host packed fundraisers at places like Airbnb’s swanky new headquarters in San Francisco’s SoMa district.

According to California political donation tracker Electiontrack (and double checked with Cal-Access) here’s a list of big tech names that have given generously to Harris:

Sean Parker (Napster, Facebook)
Marc Benioff (Salesforce)
Marissa Mayer (Yahoo)
John and Anne Doerr (Kleiner Perkins)

Brian Chesky (Airbnb)

Tony Fadell (Nest)

As Attorney General, Harris hasn’t been very influential on tech’s big issues. Her website mentions a roster of classic liberal hot-button issues — education, equal rights, consumer rights, coastal environmental protections — but says nothing about issues Silicon Valley cares about, like loosening restrictions on highly-skilled immigrants, streamlining the bureaucracy involved in starting a company, or providing more effective protection against foreign cyberattacks directed at stealing corporate secrets.

But Silicon Valley has a history of backing inspiring rising stars who give lots of face time to the industry, even if they don’t have a distinguished record of backing big tech bills (as it did with President Obama and former congressional candidate Ro Khanna).

Harris doesn’t have many competitors in the Democratic party. Her only potential challenger, Lt. Governor and former San Francisco Mayor, Gavin Newsom, said on Monday that he isn’t running.'

What Does Emerald City Comic Con's Acquisition Mean for Rose City Comic Con?

by Megan Burbank

Today, the news came out that Emerald City Comic Con—beloved for its accessibility and reasonable scale—has been acquired by big-name events company ReedPOP. In a weird turn of events, ECCC's organizers have also been acquired by ReedPOP—they'll be taking on new roles within the larger company. In an exclusive, sprawling interview with Comics Alliance, ECCC Director Jim Demonakos and ReedPOP Vice President Lance Fensterman expressed a desire to preserve what's great about ECCC. What's not clear, however, is how this shift will affect Rose City Comic Con.

Here's the closest Demonakos gets to discussing what's going to happen:

CA: In 2014, Emerald City entered into a relationship with Rose City Comic Con in Portland, helping organize and promote that show – does ECCC’s acquisition by ReedPOP mean that Rose City will be doing their own thing this year?

JD: Yes, Rose City will once again be operating as an independent organization, and they’re getting bigger and better. They’re an incredible show in a great city, and they’re definitely ones to keep an eye on!

Rose City has responded by posting the following on its website:

Rose City Comic Con remains an independent Oregon based company. Our goal is to serve Oregon and the entire Northwest with all your pop-culture needs. We're looking forward to our event in September and we hope to see you there!

Rose City Comic Con and Emerald City Comic Con teamed up in 2012, announcing a formal partnership following convention giant Wizard World's decision to hold a convention closely timed with Rose City.

American Light Rail and Streetcar Systems to Scale by Matt Johnson

Nice work here from long-time Transit Maps correspondent Matt Johnson as he visualises all existing and under construction light rail and streetcar systems in the USA in one graphic. In a way, this graphic is an update of this fantastic (but now out of date) one by Bill Rankin that shows the relative scales of all North American rail-based urban rapid transit (PDF link).

The sprawling nature of some of the light rail systems is readily apparent, reflecting the suburban nature of those cities. The relative largeness of my hometown Portland’s system surprises me, but I guess it does extend from Hillsboro all the way to Gresham! Streetcar systems tend to be much smaller, serving the central core of a city – some of them barely showing up at all at the scale of this graphic.

Check out the article that accompanies this graphic over at Greater Greater Washington for more details, and be sure to read the comments for some interesting thoughts from readers.

Make A Water Recycling System

by Rebecca Houlihan
firehose

hi saucie

NewImage

Want to the water your garden during a drought? Or you just don’t want the steep water bill? Use this tutorial from user slemke to recycle your grey water. via instructables

The area that I live in has been in a drought for a year or more. As such we now have water restrictions on washing the car, watering the garden etc. Initially I set up a drainage hose from the washing machine outlet to containers outside to enable me to collect the waste water so I could water the garden. This process worked fine except for the back breaking work of emptying the waste water (grey water) onto various places in the garden.

The next stage was to develop an automatic system that would distribute the grey water into the garden and have the following features.
1) Filter the water before sending it to the garden.
2) Automatic pump to allow water to be delivered to the high end of the garden.
3) Timer to prevent water stagnating in the tank.

The system uses a wheeled trash bin which is made out of 5mm thick plastic (nice and sturdy). Grey water comes into the top of the bin into a filter. When the bin fills to around 3/4 full, a water level switch triggers the pump controller to turn on the pump sitting at the bottom of the bin. The pump continues to operate until the lower water level switch is triggered.

The pump controller also has some logic built into the program to detect if water is in the bin but not high enough to operate the high water level switch. If this situation occurs, at 10 hour timer is started. If the water stays in the bin for 10 hours the pump will start and empty the bin. This stops the water from stagnating. I also have another timer that detects the run time of the pump. If the pump runs for longer than an hour (without any of the level switches being triggered) then the fault LED will be lit and all pumping will stop. This would indicate that the output pipe is blocked.

Obama to push for cheaper, speedier broadband in the US

by Josh Lowensohn

President Obama today outlined an upcoming executive action to increase US broadband speeds and reduce its cost, something he intends to announce at a speech tomorrow in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and again in his sixth State of the Union address next week.

In order to do that, The White House today said that it plans to file a letter with the Federal Communications Commission to end restrictions in 19 states that it believes are holding back broadband advances. It also plans to push a grants and loans program for rural carriers to supply subsidized broadband, as well as form a "Broadband Opportunity Council" whose job it will be to "promote greater coordination" among various government organizations.

"That little circle thing that goes round and around. It's really aggravating."

In a preview of the initiative, Obama pointed to Cedar Falls as a prime example of the inequality of broadband service among US cities when compared to international counterparts. It ranks on par with download speeds in cities like Seoul, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Paris. By comparison, he said, cities like Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC, and San Francisco come up short.

"You know what it feels like when you don't have a good internet connection. Everything is buffering, you're trying to download a video, you got that little circle thing that goes round and around. It's really aggravating," Obama said. "There are real world consequences to this, and it makes us less economically competitive."

Internet download speeds (White House)

(Credit: WhiteHouse.gov)

The topic is one several about the security and availability of the internet that Obama is expected to discuss further in the State of the Union. Yesterday the President said he wants the federal government to do more to safeguard data, both from attackers and advertisers. He's also expected to weigh in once again on changes to net neutrality, which the FCC is voting on next month.

Margaret Cho Isn't Apologizing for That Golden Globes North Korea Skit

by Jamilah King
Margaret Cho Isn't Apologizing for That Golden Globes North Korea Skit

Margaret Cho isn't apologizing for her North Korea bit at this year's Golden Globes. The comedian had a recurring character named Cho Young-Ja, a humorless North Korean Army general with a stereotypically "Asian" accent who was also a contributor to the fictional to Movies Wow! magazine.

E. Alex Young wrote over at Vulture that the bit was plainly racist, and falls in line with a long line of problematic comedy in Cho's history:

Margaret Cho's comedy has always relied on utilizing a brand of Orientalism. For instance, in her HBO comedy special from 1994, she does a sketch where she plays a "sponsored child" for Star magazine. She dons a rice paddy hat and "Asian" accent as she shares her weight-loss secret: contracting malaria. On the face of it, this could be just another instance of yellowface, but Cho introduces the sketch with a story of when her brother sent her a clipping from Starmagazine that featured her on the cover with the headline "Chow Like Cho Diet" and a fake interview. "When I was young, I was raised on rice and fish, so when I get heavy I go back to that natural Asian way of eating," Cho relays. "That's so racist you can almost hear the choppers overhead."

But Cho defending her actions on Twitter:

I'm of mixed North/South Korean descent - you imprison, starve and brainwash my people you get made fun of by me #hatersgonhate #FreeSpeech

-- Margaret Cho (@margaretcho) January 12, 2015

She also spoke to BuzzFeed and added, "I'm of North and South Korean descent, and I do impressions of my family and my work all the time, and this is just another example of that," she said. "I am from this culture. I am from this tribe. And so I'm able to comment on it.

I can do whatever I want when it comes to Koreans -- North Koreans, South Korean. I'm not playing the race card, I'm playing the rice card. I'm the only person in the world, probably, that can make these jokes and not be placed in a labor camp."

AEP : Addicting Info – Millionaire Renounces US Citizenship To Dodge Taxes, Whines When He Can’t Come Back

firehose

via Albener Pessoa

Roger Ver is your typical free-loading libertarian millionaire: Loved all the perks he got from living in the United States, didn’t think he should pay for them. In fact, he was so incensed at the idea of having to pay taxes on his millions – that he totally earned in a complete vacuum having nothing to do with the infrastructure created by the tyrannical government – that in 2014, he renounced his citizenship and ran off to live in St. Kitts, a tropical island with no almost no taxes.

Except now he’s upset because the US won’t let him back in:

Ver complains that the decision has forced him to miss speaking appointments at conferences and that the US embassy in Barbados refused to even consider the evidence for his application.

The official reasoning behind Ver’s rejection is that he doesn’t have sufficient “ties” to his country of residency in the Caribbean and has not demonstrated he has “the ties that will compel [him] to return to your home country after your travel to the United States,” according to a picture he tweeted of a letter that appears to be from the embassy.

In short, US officials are worried that Ver might choose to stay in his native country illegally.

Ver is known as “Bitcoin Jesus” because he fetishsizes the cryptocurrency that he’s hoping will overthrow the evil tyrannical government. Of course, like all libertarians, Ver doesn’t really care what happens to all the people not already rolling in bitcoins because he got his, so to the hell with them. The most annoying part of his hypocrisy? Ver worships a virtual currency that literally only exists because the United States government he loathes so much spent millions of taxpayer dollars to develop the internet that Bitcoin cannot exist without. What a complete and utter tosser.

It might seem petty for the US to deny Ver entry but let’s be honest, if you renounce your citizenship for the explicit reason that you already made your millions and don’t want to pay back into the system that allowed you to become wealthy, you’ve broken the social contract and the United States owes you absolutely nothing. He can go scratch where the sun don’t shine.

Speaking to attendees of the Automotive News World Congress today in Detroit, Musk said that one of his kids called the Model S was "the stupidest car in the world," because it didn't have reading lights in the back. The feature had originally been removed because Musk and others believed people would use backlit devices. One of his five kids thought differently, and the lights were brought back.

Tesla originally said the removal in the lights was to increase the headroom in the backseat area, something it was able to accomplish while keeping the lights, but the company managed to ship out some cars to customers that did not have them. Tesla ultimately offered to install the lights to those customers at no cost.

Musk also hopes Tesla will be profitable by 2020

Musk's appearance came alongside the North American International Auto Show, which is taking place in Detroit this week. Other speakers include General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Jaguar president and CEO Joe Eberhardt, and Chris Urmson, the director of Google's self-driving cars project.

Along with lightbulbs, Musk discussed a number of rather serious issues facing Tesla, including the possibility of the company becoming profitable by the time its Model 3 goes into production come 2020. Musk skirted questions surrounding just how many cars Tesla was selling, saying the company's target for last year was to sell 33,000 vehicles. "We sold, in terms of cars, far more than that," he added.

EMERALD CITY COMICON JOINS THE REEDPOP FAMILY OF CONVENTIONS

Since its founding in 2003, Emerald City Comicon has grown to occupy a unique place in the echelon of comic book and pop culture conventions – it’s high-profile without being high stress; it focuses largely on indie and small-press work; it’s a show that’s centered on the artistry of the comic medium. It has a well-deserved reputation for being not just a fan’s convention, but a creator’s convention. The atmosphere is friendly and casual, and it’s full of cool things to see and do without being overwhelmed by the bombast and commercialization of most large-scale shows. It’s about the comics community.

ReedPOP, on the other hand, is known for its huge entertainment events: New York Comic Con, Star Wars Celebration, C2E2, the UFC Fan Expo, the PAX family of shows.  And while last year’s launch of Special Edition: New York (a smaller, comic-focused compliment the all-inclusive San Diego-esque sensory overload of NYCC) was a critical and commercial success, Emerald City still seems like quite a different animal from anything else in Reed’s family of conventions, which is why it will come as a surprise to many industry observers that ECCC has become part of the ReedPOP group.

That’s right. Emerald City Comicon is now part of ReedPOP. ComicsAlliance has confirmed that as part of the acquisition of ECCC, director Jim Demonakos and his staff will remain not just with ECCC, but actually join ReedPOP in expanded roles that will see them involved with organizing and executing other conventions as well, both in the United States and internationally. Indeed, in this exclusive interview with Demonakos and ReedPOP vice present Lance Fensterman, the new union’s stated goal is to find ways for “ what makes Emerald City so much fun for creators to be infused into New York and C2E2.”

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

1. Good luck with that

2. Does this mean rosecitycomiccon is also a ReedPOP exxxxtravaganzzzaaaanow? (EDIT: No it doesn’t. “Rose City will once again be operating as an independent organization, and they’re getting bigger and better.”)
