The record industry reportedly won't let Apple price its streaming service below $10

by Nathan Ingraham

No one really knows what Apple's inevitable iTunes-branded subscription service will look like, but details have been emerging over the last few months ahead of its anticipated announcement this summer. We know that Apple is unlikely to offer a free, ad-supported tier, and it seemed like Apple was going to try to undercut competitors like Spotify by offering its service for $7.99 per month. Now, it's looking like Apple might not be able to use price to catch up to Spotify — a report from Billboard indicates that the record companies are unsurprisingly unhappy with Apple's attempt to make streaming music even cheaper. As such, it sounds like Apple is no longer pushing that price point and will instead price its service at the now-standard $9.99 per month.

Apple is also reportedly hoping to use the power and clout iTunes gained over the last decade-plus as the world's largest music retailer to try and get more exclusive content as a way to combat Spotify's dominance in the streaming market. But it sounds like the record labels aren't inclined to give Apple that content at the same time as it is trying to make subscriptions services even cheaper. "Apple is one of the biggest companies in the world," an unnamed music executive told Billboard. "If they want exclusive content, they're going to have to get out the checkbook."

Lucy Lawless to Stomp Deadite Ass in the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV Show! - Groovy.

by Dan Van Winkle
firehose

WHOA OK, LISTENING

Marvels-Agents-of-Shield-Lucy-Lawless

Or maybe she’ll stomp Ash’s ass? It’s not clear yet, but there had better be some Xena-ass-stompage to be found. Aiaiaiaiaiaiai!

Bruce Campbell has confirmed Lucy Lawless will appear in the upcoming Ash vs. Evil Dead tv series in some capacity. After a previous interview in which Lawless made some remarks about Campbell not “ruining her franchise,” he said to Blastr, “Dear Ms. Lawless: Hit your marks, say your lines, or you’re fired,” and, “She’s going to be on the show.”

Yes! Nothing will ever fill the chakram-lined hole in my heart from the lack of Lawless in any of the final season of Parks and Recreation, but this is a nice consolation prize.

Campbell went on to add,

We just added her to our cast, and I got to tell you, I couldn’t be happier. Some actors you work with and you know that you’re going to fail the chemistry test. There are some that you know you won’t fail it. She’s great; I worked with her a lot in the Xena days, and it’s great to have her on Ash vs. Evil Dead.

Details on just what part she’ll play or how involved she’ll be a scarce to non-existent, but Ash himself did mention that her ability to play “extreme characters” would be put to good use, so get excited. Campbell expects her to be a show-stealer just as much as we do:

I expect her to hog every one of our scenes, and I’ll let her because she’s Lucy Lawless; we want her to be happy on the show and we have a very good part for her.

by ericisawesome

That’s a slick Zelda wallet and shirt ⊟

If I hadn’t just splurged on a Saddleback joint, I would be all over this “luxury wallet” from British brand and shop Gametee. Crafted with “luxury Grade-1 Italian ethically sourced leather”, the slim bifold doubles as an attractive wallet and a low-key tribute to The Legend of Zelda. The black wallet even has a forest green interior and a green stitching variant.

Gametee is kickstarting the £25/$38 wallet (pledge goal already reached!), and the additional incentives it’s offering — posters, pins, shirts, RFID-blocking sleeves, and more — are just as finely designed. That flora tee, designed by the brand’s art director AJ Hateley, is a thing of beauty. Even as a human who does not wear video game shirts on the reg, I would rock the fuck out of that.

Scotland Yard Chief: Put CCTV In Every Home To Help Solve Crimes

by samzenpus
schwit1 writes Homeowners should consider fitting CCTV to trap burglars, the country's most senior police officer declared yesterday. Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said police forces needed more crime scene footage to match against their 12 million images of suspects and offenders. And he called on families and businesses to install cameras at eye level – to exploit advances in facial recognition technology.

I visited Derrick Rose's roadside memorial under a highway overpass in Chicago

by Ricky O'Donnell

Emoji candles, printed out tweets and so much more.

It was about 50 degrees in Chicago on Monday afternoon, or approximately 50 degrees warmer than it was a week ago at this time. That in itself seemed to make for a perfectly good excuse to walk throughout the city's northwest neighborhoods to the I-90 underpass on Fullerton Ave. where a new memorial to currently injured Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose went up over the weekend.

If this particular underpass sounds familiar, it's because a salt runoff (or divine miracle) caused locals to form an homage to the Virgin Mary back in 2005 at the same location. The tribute to Rose shares similar religious undertones, only with a hint (we hope) of sarcasm. As has been said before, Rose means a lot to this city.

rose

There's plenty going on there, so we decided to take inventory. This is what people leave at a memorial for a point guard who is supposed to be back on the court in a few weeks. A vigil for Jimmy Butler's elbow has yet to be planned.

2 crutches

Derrick didn't need them after surgery so at least they were put to good use.

6 knee pads

I'm not a doctor, but I don't think these would have saved him.

12 candles

There was a candle of Phil Jackson dressed like the pope, candles of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen photoshopped into classic Catholic imagery and, of course, a candle featuring a sketch of the praying hands emoji outfitted with Chicago's six championship rings.

The mural was put together by two local Bulls fans and a vigil was held on Sunday at noon. Of course there was someone there wearing Rose's No. 25 Simeon jersey from high school. (Picture via my friend Jackie. Hi Jackie!):

Rose is expected to be back in three weeks. Prayers up.

Shitphone: A Love Story

firehose

I’ve been living happily in an electronics shitworld long enough that I’ve begun evangelizing for it. My last television, a Hisense pulled from the storeroom of a North Carolina Walmart by an employee who didn’t know it was there, is a simple and vibrant LED TV with bad sound. My stereo is built around an Insignia receiver (Best Buy house label) that powers speakers from a company called Micca ($55.60, 347 customer reviews, 4.7 stars) and it sounds… pretty good! My router is made by TP-LINK ($18.99, 575 customer reviews, 4.3 stars), and keeps me online about as reliably as my Netgear did. I bought my mother a neat little Baytek Bluetooth speaker for $26.99 (54 customer reviews, 4.6 stars), which she loves, even if its programmed voice draws out the “ess” in “Connected SuccESSSfully” in a way that suggests a strictly mechanical familiarity with English. I impulse-buy off-brand earbuds with mixed results and derive great satisfaction from discovering good ones. I bought a used Macbook for work but use a $280 Chromebook whenever possible. It is my aspirational shit-top, and I consider this situation a failure. Mainstream laptops are far enough along in the commoditization process that, for the purposes of browsing and emailing and chatting and dealing with photos — a near-totality of my computer usage — almost anything available will do. The top-selling laptop on Amazon is a $250 Asus that runs Windows 8. It would suit my needs nicely. We’ll see what happens when the Mac dies.
...
Shitphone attachment is minimal: Losing it or breaking it or handing it over to teens would be less of a loss than an interruption.

If shitphones were ready for everyone, they wouldn’t be shitphones. As devices, they’re nearly there; as buying decisions, they’re still exotic. They represent a compromise and a risk. They are classic shitworld.

I was an iPhone man once, like you. Then Shitphone changed everything.

Dame Helen Mirren accused of altering performance for US audiences in The Audience | Daily Mail Online

by gguillotte
Helen Mirren has been accused of changing her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in the Broadway version of The Audience to make it easier for Americans to understand. Critics said that the actress put ‘topspin’ on her lines to emphasize the comedic elements in the first reviews of the play - which were decidedly mixed. One reviewer claimed the show was ‘cuddly’ and for people who find Downton Abbey ‘too edgy’.

Young, Rural Americans at Greater Risk of Suicide: Study

Young people who live in rural areas of the United States die by suicide nearly twice as often as those who live in cities, a new study finds.

Researchers analyzed national data from 1996 through 2010 and found that nearly 66,600 young people aged 10 to 24 took their own lives during this period.

Guns were used in half of those suicides, although the researchers also found that hanging is rising among this age group.

The study was published online March 9 in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.

There are a number of possible reasons why young people in rural areas are more likely to kill themselves, including less access to mental health services, greater social isolation and greater availability of guns, said study co-author Cynthia Fontanella, of Ohio State University, and colleagues.

Easy access to guns is a significant part of the problem, said one expert.

"Suicide is in many ways the oft-ignored part of gun tragedy in America, the part that few talk about, especially those who resist any efforts to decrease access to guns," journal editor-in-chief Dr. Frederick Rivara wrote in an accompanying editorial. He is the division chief of general pediatrics at the University of Washington in Seattle.

"However, safe storage of firearms in the homes of children or others at risk for suicide is a pragmatic rather than ideological issue that should not be contentious. The problem of suicide and the issue of firearms are very complex public health concerns. But, in the United States, they also appear to be integrally linked and demand our attention," he concluded.

Suicide rates, per 100,000, were 19.93 for rural males and 4.40 for rural females, compared with 10.31 for urban males and 2.39 for urban females, the researchers said.

Overall, the most common methods of suicide were by gun (51 percent), hanging/suffocation (34 percent), poisoning (8 percent), and other means (7 percent).

Newswire: Let Tumblr answer one dumb question: Is This Band Name Taken?

by Marah Eakin
firehose

literally hyhomnb

There are only so many ways to put together words, especially if those words are just “the” and a plural noun. Thus, there are a finite number of band names. Fortunately, the Internet has figured out a way to help fledgling artists suss out whether a band name is available before they’re forced to change it. That way isn’t Google (though, duh…). Instead it’s Is This Band Name Taken, a new Tumblr that answers that one simple question. Want to call your band The Singles, Scarlett Johansson? Think again. Thinking about using the handle Twigs? Don’t, or you might be forced to add that “FKA” up top. Someone’s even grabbed The A.V. Club, thus killing our staff band dreams. Corncob’s available, though the site encourages groups considering that name to “get good fast,” thus ensuring they’ll have the rights to that moniker.
