TV: Newswire: Whitney Cummings' talk show has been canceled, suggesting America's theoretical love affair with her may be ending

by Sean O'Neal

Community may actually outlive Whitney, amazing

America’s hypothetical love affair with Whitney Cummings seems to be slowly going the way of all love affairs, as characterized in the comedic observations of Whitney Cummings: devolving into a barely sublimated rage that ends in a nasty break-up with her E! talk show, and then America farts and goes back to watching sports, which is just like America. Cummings’ Love You, Mean It has seen the sassy, passive-aggressive insincerity of its title thrown right back in its face by E!, who confirms that last week’s episode of the show was your final opportunity to hear Cummings’ take on the latest cultural happenings in her unique comedic voice: a sharp, needling half-shout. Nevertheless, while the continued ratings slump of NBC’s Whitney suggests it’s similarly destined for cancelation, Cummings is still doing just fine with 2 Broke Girls, meaning—like all relationships as seen by the hilariously ...

Surface Pro: 'Virtually Unrepairable'

An anonymous reader writes with a link to an article at Wired with some harsh words for Microsoft's new tablet: "The Surface Pro is not a repair-friendly machine. In fact, it's one of the least repairable devices iFixit has seen: In a teardown of Microsoft's tablet-laptop hybrid, the company gave it a rock-bottom score of just one — one! — out of 10 for repairability, lower even than Apple's iPad and the Windows Surface RT."

3D scanner made in a day

by Mike Szczys

diy-3d-scanner

The LVL1 Hackerspace held a hackathon back in June and this is one of the projects that was created in that 24-hour period. It’s a 3D scanner made from leftover parts. The image gives you an idea of the math used in the image processing. It shows the angular relations between the laser diode, the subject being scanned, and the webcam doing the scanning.

The webcam is of rather low quality and one way to quickly improve the output would be to replace it with a better one. But because the rules said they had to use only materials from the parts bin it worked out just fine. The other issue that came into play was the there were no LCD monitors available for use in the project. Because of that they decided to make the device controllable over the network. On the right you can see a power supply taped to the top of a car computer. It connects to the laser (pulled out of a barcode scanner which produces a line of red light) and the turntable. A Python script does all of the image processing, assembling each slice of the scan into both an animated GIF and an OBJ file.

[Thanks Nathan]

Steam for Linux is now live

by Alexa Ray Corriea

By Alexa Ray Corriea on Feb 14, 2013 at 2:18p

Steam is now available on Linux, Valve announced today.

Linux users can download the free Steam client from the Ubuntu Software Center, the most-used Linux distribution center. Steam for Linux client is compatible with Steam's Big Picture mode, allowing users to play their Linux games on the television using a game controller.

To commemorate the launch, Steam is offering 50 Linux-compatible titles between 50 and 75 percent off until Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. ET. Available games include Counter-Strike 1.6, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life and Team Fortress 2, the latter of which is also running an exclusive promotion. For a limited time players on Steam for Linux will receive Linux mascot Tux the penguin as an item that can be carried by characters in-game.

"The introduction of Steam to Ubuntu demonstrates growing demand for open systems from gamers and game developers," said Ubuntu developer Canonical's director of consumer applications David Pitkin. "We expect a growing number of game developers to include Ubuntu among their target platforms. We're looking forward to seeing AAA games developed with Ubuntu in mind as part of a multi-platform day and date release on Steam."

"We're huge fans of Linux," added Serious Sam developer Croteam's CTO Alen Ladavac. "It's like the indie OS-a perfect home for our indie game. And who better to lead the charge into Linux gaming than Valve?

"With Steam distribution on Windows, Mac OS, and now Linux, plus the buy-once, play-anywhere promise of Steam Play, our games are available to everyone, regardless what type of computer they're running," he added. "That's huge."

Valve announced it was developing Steam for Linux last spring. The program went into closed beta through Ubuntu in November before opening to everyone a month later.

Spider-Man arrested after Times Square fight with woman

by Kevin Melrose

spiderman-threat or menaceLife isn’t easy for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, particularly if your neighborhood is Times Square.

Philip Williams, who’s just one of two wall-crawlers who lurk around the New York City tourist magnet charging for photos, was arrested Sunday after he allegedly punched a 44-year-old mother who refused to pay him for posing with her two kids.

The New York Post reports the woman stormed off to find her husband, intent on revenge. But upon her return … she angrily confronted the wrong Spider-Man. “A woman came to me and said, ‘What did you do to me, you fucker?’” the other webhead told the newspaper. “Her husband came over and said it was a different Spider-Man. They went over to the other one and started fighting.”

With that web of confusion untangled, the husband beat the 35-year-old Williams with a backpack until police arrived and hauled Spidey away, proving once again that J. Jonah Jameson was right.

“Getting arrested isn’t good for any of us,” a man who dresses as Big Bird told the Post. “It makes us all look bad.” Yes, that’s what makes them look bad.

But at a bail hearing, Williams claimed he was the victim and only acted in self-defense. In his version of events, the woman apologized for not having money to tip him for the photo. When he replied “You’re crap,” she struck him with a snowball. And so he punched her. With great power something-something-something …

Williams, who was charged with assault and harassment and released without having to pay bail, clearly is cursed with that Parker luck, as prosecutors noted he’s had brushes with the law before.

Raspberry Pi as a plug-in hash harvester

by Mike Szczys
firehose

not that kind of hash

plug-in-hash-harvesting

Plug in the power and Ethernet and this Raspberry Pi board will automatically collect Windows hashes from computers on the network. With a couple of RPi boards on hand [Travis] was searching for more hacks to try with them. This made a great little test to see how the board performs with the well established attack.

To start he booted into the standard Raspbian distribution. From there he loads the Metasploit framework which brings most of the necessary tools into play. It uses the Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Protocol (WPAD)  to request hashes from any Windows machines listening on the network. Some version of the OS respond with LM hashes, others don’t. The importance of this and the particulars of using rainbow tables to crack the hashes is explained in this article on the subject.

We wouldn’t mind having a little hardware hack that adds a couple of LEDs to the GPIO header so you know when the RPi is done collecting the data.

TV: Newswire: The Whisky A Go Go could get its own Boardwalk Empire-like series

by Sean O'Neal

The Whisky A Go Go could soon be the site of soap opera drama totally unrelated to that time Axl Rose was kidnapped and replaced by his evil twin, as Deadline reports a premium cable series revolving around the fames Sunset Strip nightclub is in the works. Virgin’s Richard Branson (a man who knows rock ‘n’ roll, often seeing him at Christmas) is behind the series that would start with the early days of the Whisky’s co-founding by Elmer Valentine, Mario Maglieri, and others in the 1960s, tracing the Maglieri family’s “rise to power” as it bought up other nearby clubs, and telling the stories of the many legendary bands who have played there over the years. The search is currently on for showrunners and directors for the drama described as “a rock ‘n’ roll twist on Casino and Boardwalk Empire,” in the sense that it has ...

What the asteroid skimming past Earth tomorrow could be worth

by Gideon Lichfield
Artist's impression of asteroid 2012 DA14 approaching Earth. Asteroid 2012 DA14: priceless, or worthless. AP Photo / NASA / JPL-Caltech

So you want to build a giant spaceship?

That’s the assumption of asteroid-mining consortium Deep Space Industries (DSI), which suggested yesterday that asteroid 2012 DA14, due to pass by Earth tomorrow (Feb. 15), could be worth $195 billion.

If that seems like a lot for a 150-foot (45-meter) lump of rock and ice, that’s because, says DSI, it would only be worth this much—and this is what most news reports glossed over—if its contents were used for building spaceships:

According to DSI experts, if 2012 DA14 contains 5% recoverable water, that alone—in space as rocket fuel—might be worth as much as $65 billion. If 10% of its mass is easily recovered iron, nickel and other metals, that could be worth—in space as building material—an additional $130 billion.

The company obtains these figures by arguing that using the asteroid’s materials in space would save you the cost of getting those same materials off the Earth’s surface and into orbit—which it puts at $10 million per US ton. But this, of course, is predicated on the existence of an orbital construction industry with demand for thousands of tons of water and metal. Tim Worstall of Forbes, who pointed out that absent such an industry, the value of the asteroid is precisely zero, earned himself a huffy riposte from DSI (scroll down to the comments).

And why isn’t there such an industry? A look at the economics of asteroid mining can help here too.

As we calculated before, an asteroid 10 meters wide would fetch just under $9 million as a pure metal hybrid of 90% iron and 10% nickel, which some asteroids are thought to be. (We said $8 million last time, but nickel prices have risen since.) For 2012 DA14, which has just over 90 times the volume, that’s about $820 million of iron and nickel.

This, incidentally, is why asteroid mining for earthbound use is a fantasy: NASA’s planned space probe to bring back just 2kg of asteroid a decade hence will cost $1 billion. But let’s fantasize, and suppose 2012 DA14 were made of pure silver. It would then be worth $48 billion at current market prices. In other words, even a 150-foot, 55,000 ton silver nugget would still be worth only a quarter of what DSI estimates it would cost to get a fraction of that mass, in water and base metals, into space.

And that is why DSI’s claim does make a certain crazy sense. Mining asteroids could, in theory, be a much cheaper way to get that raw material—but only assuming you know someone who wants to build giant spaceships with it.

And so it remains only to note in passing that someone last year proposed a design for the Starship Enterprise, which would cost $1 trillion and weigh 85,000 tonnes including propellant. Going by DSI’s reckoning, that’s just a handful of asteroids’-worth. What are we waiting for?

The Oscar Pistorius shooting has spurred a gun control debate in South Africa

by Commentary
South Africans drop their guns at the entrance of a week end long motorcycle rally north of Johannesburg.

South African Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius has been charged with the murder of his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. This incident has begun to spark debate about gun ownership in a country where estimates show that there are 12 firearms for every 100 citizens, 6 million guns overall. The gun laws in South Africa stipulate that potential owners undergo a competency test and a background check. As it stands there are few facts as to why Pistorius allegedly shot his girlfriend  in the head and arm in his home in Pretoria this morning. Police have disputed early morning reports by Afrikaans publication Beeld that claimed that the athlete attacked Steenkamp because he had mistaken her for an intruder in his house. Pistorius is currently in police custody.

On the same day that President Jacob Zuma is set to deliver his State of The Nation Address, the shooting has dominated news in South Africa with some callers on the popular talk radio station CapeTalk, saying that this is just another example why people should not keep guns in their homes.

In a country with such high rates of violence, particularly against women, this debate is bound to gather steam as the facts of the morning’s deadly incident become clearer. One report has referred to Pistorius’s “affinity for guns” and the Independent Online referenced the star athlete’s interview last year with the New York Times where he spoke about his 9mm handgun and took the reporter to the shooting range.

The independent broadcast channel MNet, which airs the Academy Awards to its subscribers, is pulling its billboard that features Pistorius in Rovonia, Johannesburg. “Out of respect and sympathy to the bereaved, M-Net will be pulling its entire Oscars live coverage campaign featuring Oscar Pistorius with immediate effect,” M-Net’s Head of Communications Lani Lombard is quoted as saying.

The Fed proposes to smother banks with capital, but not end “too big to fail”

by Simone Foxman
Wall Street flood cash capital

When JP Morgan lost $6 billion on a bad derivatives bet in its “London Whale” fiasco last year, it wasn’t just unpleasant for the bank, but was also a blow to regulators’ credibility. Banks that don’t properly supervise their own traders are just the kind of thing that regulators—most particularly the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, according to a longtime investment banker—were supposed to be watching out for.

So the US Federal Reserve, tasked with making sure systemic risk doesn’t wreck the financial system, has been looking for ways to do it even when other agencies fall down on the job. Its solution: Smother banks with loads and loads of capital. In a speech today before the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Fed governor Daniel Tarullo announced new proposals that, boiled down, force the nation’s smallest and largest banks to stockpile funds in case of a shock to the financial system. That way, if credit seizes up and banks can no longer borrow to refinance their debt or fund their daily operations, they’ll have plenty of capital on hand to hold off insolvency. Well, that’s the idea, anyway.

us bank tier 1 capital ratios historical data Banks have loaded up on high-quality capital over the last few years, but is that enough? Hamilton Place Strategies

The proposals call for new premiums on banks with assets worth more than $50 billion; for premiums on systemically important banks considered “too big to fail” on an international basis (this includes a timely application of Basel III requirements, which would force JP Morgan, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank AG, and HSBC Holdings PLC to hold some 2.5% more high-quality capital); and for forcing banks that securitize products to retain a portion—recent proposals have said 5%—of the securities they’ve sponsored. This last piece would theoretically prevent banks from issuing securities in bets they know they will lose and then selling the whole lot off to suckers, as Goldman Sachs did when it issued credit-default swaps against subprime mortgages which it sold to AIG.

The new proposals would also standardize risk-weighting procedures—particularly for regional and community banks. These more stringent procedures would probably force them to (surprise) hold more capital.

Finally, the proposals would require banks to hold a minimum proportion of long-term debt (currently, they mostly hold short-term Treasurys of 2-3 years maturity). The idea here is to align the banks’ interests more closely with those of the economy as a whole—that if they hold unsecured long-term debt, they won’t bet against those markets fundamental to the functioning of the economy—the mortgage market, for instance.

Tarullo also cited concerns about a shadow banking system—and the regulation of financial institutions which are not banks, though there were no concrete proposals.

But it will save the banks?

The Fed’s proposals will make banks pay a penalty for being too big, and force them, in theory, to act more responsibly. But there could be unintended consequences.

First, more long-term debt could hobble the banks in a bad economy. Some banks already hold some debt with a longer duration—10 or even 30 years—purchased at low interest rates. If interest rates rise then those bonds lose value relative to the money they could or should be making. Those losses could be more acute in a sluggish economy where their other investments aren’t making them much money. This is already a concern: Christopher Wolfe, a managing director in Fitch’s financial institutions group, said long-term debt is one of the main things his team has been looking into lately to determine the credit-worthiness of the firms they cover. If the Fed forces banks to up their holdings, it could effectively be penalizing them for simply existing in a bad economy.

Second, it could discourage foreign banks from operating in the US. Under the current provisions of Dodd-Frank that Tarullo has promulgated, foreign banks will be forced to establish US holding companies. In these holding companies, they’ll be required to keep a certain amount of high-quality capital at all times, restricting their ability to move that cash overseas. That might make it simply too expensive for them to do business in the US, causing them to leave that business. For example, Barclays and Deutsche Bank have already given up their titles as US bank holding companies, allowing them to evade certain new capital requirements.

Third, it’s not clear that the reform will lead to smaller banks, or even that the Fed has that goal in mind. Nathan Sheets, Citigroup’s global head of international economics, who spent 18 years at the Federal Reserve, said last month at a conference, “I think the bank model over time is as robust as the capital markets model,” and argued that US banks were likely to expand over the next 10 years. In the same way banks in Europe are responsible for the vast majority of lending and thus have massive balance sheets, US banks—Sheets believes—could end up expanding the scope of their operations, with more hands in all pots.

Further, forcing small banks to hold onto more capital and spend lots of money on lawyers to fulfill new regulations makes them less viable, and encourages them to consolidate. That’s already begun to happen; many community banks have been allowed to fail since the financial crisis, and many states have cited the consolidation of their community banks as a growing trend. The end result is that big banks seem a likely outcome of all this regulation, albeit ones awash in capital.

The Fed’s desire that banks be rolling in cash doesn’t fix the financial system in the long term. It just cushions it against the risks that remain in place. It certainly doesn’t contribute to the separation, which the Volcker Rule is meant to achieve, of more bread-and-butter banking and lending from trading and investment banking. The capital-heavy model is likely to hold up for a while, but it’s a questionable antidote to future systemic financial crises.

India’s most popular matchmaking service is finally being used in … India

by Commentary
A couple rides a bike through rainfall in Hyderabad, India.

While the rest of the world believes that marriages are made in heaven, in India, marriages have always been made in categories. Until a decade ago, there were only two: arranged, where the parents picked the potential spouse; and love, a minority of couples who chose each other. Now, sitting somewhere in between and growing at a phenomenal rate, is a new one—the online matchmaker.

Here are some figures that highlight the rising trend:

The top three online Indian matchmakers have accounted for over 5 million marriages in the last decade. Bharat Matrimony is the prominent player in the southern states and Shaadi, which means wedding in Hindi, is the leader in the rest of the country. Jeevansathi was a later entrant and is currently the third largest player.

On average, Shaadi gets 10,000 new registrations a day and has 3 million active users looking for spouses. Until 2007, a majority of these users were South Asians who lived abroad. Now, 80% of registered users, which include parents looking for spouses for their children, are Indians living in India.

The current size of the online-matchmaking industry in India is $100 million. Revenues of the top two players, Bharat Matrimony and Shaadi, are around $30 to $35 million a year and are growing at 40% annually. Registration on the sites is free but users have to pay, between $45 to $60 for three months’ access, to initiate contact with other users.

Sites provide their users with 23 to 25 personal criteria such as: community, location, education, height, weight, age, salary among others. Most users’ first criterion is finding someone from their own community followed by educational qualifications and career prospects. During the recession of 2008 to 2010, the average age of the users went up by six months as people delayed getting married. Also, most users preferred not to marry people working in the more recession-hit countries, especially the US and UK. Bankers also fell significantly in the preferred list of professions.

Currently, eight metro cities account for 50% of the users. The remaining users come from other parts of India. The highest rate of growth is in the non-metro India gets connected to the internet and mobile is the new area of focus for online matchmakers in India. Offline users have the option to go to one of 100 matchmaking centers that Shaadi operates across 87 towns in India.
