God of Blades slays Android

by JC Fletcher

attn: librarians

God of Blades slays AndroidGod of Blades, the only game that combines brutal sword duels and your local library, is now escaping the bounds of iOS and invading Android. And to celebrate the surprise launch, developer White Whale Games has the new version on sale for 99 cents (normally $3).

God of Blades adds a layer of meaning to its otherworldly sword-hacking by awarding players special swords for visiting libraries in the real world. This connects the game's pulp novel inspirations with the idea of scouring the shelves for some previously undiscovered inspiration of your own, and helping to keep obscure fiction from being forgotten. You don't really have to think about that stuff to play it (just swipe to cut, mostly) but that deeper meaning is there if you want it.

To get a better idea of how the game works, you can play its multiplayer PC/Mac variant Slayers here.

Cristiano Siqueira’s posters for imaginary Batman films

Cristiano Siqueira, the Brazillian illustrator/designer sometimes known as CrisVector, is another one of those guys who spends a fair amount of time dream-casting Batman films in his head, but unlike most, has gone on and created posters for these imaginary movies. He’s posted a gallery of them on Behance, and some of them are quite inspired — Mel Gibson as Frank Miller’s returning Dark Knight? Suitably mental!

Best Buy Follows Yahoo in Banning Remote Work

by Soulskill

well it's been fun

bednarz writes "Is telecommuting the new scapegoat for poor performance? Best Buy, in the midst of a corporate restructuring, has canceled its flexible work program and expects corporate employees to put in traditional 40-hour work weeks at the retailer's headquarters (they used to be able to work whenever and wherever they wanted). The announcement comes on the heels of Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's decision to end telecommuting, which ignited a firestorm of criticism. It also follows news of Best Buy's plans to lay off 400 corporate workers as part of a plan to cut $725 million in costs and restructure its business. This could signal the beginning of a trend, or be an indication that telecommuters need to actively justify their preference for working outside the office."

During the awards broadcast, hosts Fey and Poehler threw a barb at Taylor Swift, telling her to “stay away” from actor Michael J. Fox’s 23-year-old son.

The Grammy-winning singer is well known for documenting her personal relationships in her songs, often leaving little clues in the lyrics that hint at the subject.

She has been linked to high profile celebrities such as John Mayer, Jake Gyllenhaal, Taylor Lautner, Joe Jonas and more recently, Conor Kennedy and One Direction’s Harry Styles.

In the Vanity Fair interview, Swift, 23, responded to the Golden Globes incident by citing a saying told to her by talk show host Katie Couric that “there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.”

“For a female to write about her feelings, and then be portrayed as some clingy, insane, desperate girlfriend in need of making you marry her and have kids with her, I think that’s taking something that potentially should be celebrated - a woman writing about her feelings in a confessional way - that’s taking it and turning it and twisting it into something that is frankly a little sexist,” Swift said.

Swift’s latest hit “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” was presumed to be about Gyllenhaal while “I Knew You Were Trouble” is said to be about Mayer.

Swift, who notably refuses to reveal details of her personal life, didn’t name any names herself in the interview, but said “since 2010 I have dated exactly two people,” referring to Kennedy and Styles.

According to Vanity Fair, Swift gave permission for an unnamed source to speak about her relationships in more detail, revealing that Styles, 19, had “chased” Swift for a year and “wore her down” into dating him.

The Accidental Betrayal of Aaron Swartz

by Soulskill
theodp writes "The anarchist dictum when it comes to grand juries, explains Salon's Natasha Lennard, is a simple one: 'No one talks, everyone walks.' It's a lesson journalist Quinn Norton tragically learned only after federal prosecutors got her to inadvertently help incriminate Aaron Swartz, her dearest friend and then-lover. Convinced she knew nothing that could be used against Swartz, Norton at first cooperated with the prosecutors. But prosecutors are pro fishermen — they cast wide nets. And in a moment Norton describes as 'profoundly foolish,' she told the grand jury that Swartz had co-authored a blog post advocating for open data (the Guerrilla Open Access Manifesto), which prosecutors latched onto and spun into evidence that the technologist had 'malicious intent in downloading documents on a massive scale.' Norton sadly writes, 'It is important the people know that the prosecutors manipulated me and used my love against Aaron without me understanding what they were doing. This is their normal. They would do this to anyone. We should understand that any alleged crime can become life-ruining if it catches their eyes.' Consider yourself forewarned."

Vint Cerf: Google Shouldn't Require Real Names

by Soulskill
An anonymous reader writes "In an interview with Reuters, 'father of the internet' Vint Cerf spoke about Google's past push for requiring real names from their users — a stance they later backed down from after public outcry. Google+ and many other services work just fine with pseudonyms, Cert says, and it's better to let users pick the option that works best for them. 'Using real names is useful. But I don't think it should be forced on people, and I don't think we do.' That said, he also firmly believes some services do need true identities from both sides: 'Anonymity and pseudonymity are perfectly reasonable under some situations. But there are cases where in the transactions both parties really need to know who are we talking to. So what I'm looking for is not that we shut down anonymity, but rather that we offer an option when needed that can strongly authenticate who the parties are.' Still, the matter of pseudonyms on Google+ seems to be settled internally, at least for the moment. Cerf said, 'There was a debate on this subject and it was resolved. ... Our conclusion was that choice is important.'"

FIGMENT 2013, An Annual Multi-City Participatory Art and Culture Event

by Rusty Blazenhoff

Figment

Figment Boston

FIGMENT is an annual series of interactive events in different cities that encourage the creation and display of arts. A multi-city call for participation has been posted for FIGMENT 2013.

FIGMENT is an antidote for uncertain times. Precisely because the commercial market for art is facing grave challenges in an uncertain economy, an event like FIGMENT is more important than ever, because it is built on community and not on commercialism. Participatory art expands the definition of “art” — art isn’t about creating an object that can be bought and sold, or creating a “show” that you pay to attend — it’s about creating a shared experience, free from the constraints and pressures of the marketplace. It’s about a celebration of creative culture. Lack of money should not be a barrier to creativity.

Civ 4 lead's consulting gig at Stardock followed Zynga layoffs, still deciding his future

by Xav de Matos
Soren Johnson, lead designer of Civilization 4, has clarified his role at Stardock following company CEO Brad Wardell's announcement his studio had secured Johnson "at least for a while, to oversee the design of all our games."

Johnson tells Joystiq that Zynga's decision to shutter its Baltimore studio last week left him jobless and he quickly jumped into a role as a consultant at the developer famous for its Galactic Civilization franchise.

"Brad Wardell and I wanted to work together for a while, so I immediately started a consulting job with Stardock to help them with their current projects," Johnson said in an email to Joystiq. " I am, however, still trying to decide what my next permanent position is going to be."

Late last year Stardock launched Elemental: Fallen Enchantress, previously the studio released Rebellion, an expansion to the real-time strategy game Sins of a Solar Empire. Prior to his stint at Zynga, Johnson had worked at Maxis as part of the team that developed Spore.

Developers May Be Getting 50% of Their Documentation From Stack Overflow

by Soulskill

because documentation fucking sucks

New submitter gameweld writes "Software companies, such as Microsoft, create documentation for millions of topics concerning its APIs, services, and software platforms. Creating this documentation comes at a considerable cost and effort. And after all this effort, much documentation is rarely consulted (citation) and lacking enough examples (citation). A new study suggests that developers are increasingly consulting Stack Overflow and crowd-sourced sites over official documentation, using it as much as 50% of time. How should official documentation be better redesigned? What are the implications of software created from unruly mashups?"

Let’s Move! Celebrates its 3rd Birthday–At Walmart’s

by Marion

Last week, First Lady Michelle Obama did a national tour to celebrate the third anniversary of her Let’s Move! campaign to end childhood obesity within a generation.

As explained in the White House press release, the tour was to focus on school lunches, physical activity, and getting businesses involved—“Healthy Families, Thriving Businesses.”

To that end, she visited a Walmart in Springfield, Missouri to congratulate the company on its pledge to open 300 stores in communities with limited access to affordable healthy foods, to reduce salt and sugars in its products, to make healthier food more affordable, and to put front-of-package logos on healthier foods.

As the press release explained (and as Walmart says in its own):

Walmart is one of many businesses across the country that is making healthy changes to support their customers, because they recognize that what’s good for their customer’s health is also good for their business. Following the tour, Mrs. Obama will deliver remarks about how supporting the health of American families is also good for business, and remind consumers that it’s up to them to continue demanding healthier options.

Did this mean that the new emphasis of Let’s Move! would be on personal responsibility?  Mrs. Obama explained further in the Wall Street Journal:

Take the example of Wal-Mart. In just the past two years, the company reports that it has cut the costs to its consumers of fruits and vegetables by $2.3 billion and reduced the amount of sugar in its products by 10%. Wal-Mart has also opened 86 new stores in underserved communities and launched a labeling program that helps customers spot healthy items on the shelf.

The best reported account of this visit is by Eddie Gehman Kohan at Obamafoodorama.  She points out that this particular Walmart is not located in an underserved community.  She also did the math and calculated that the savings in the cost of fruits and vegetables work out to 16 cents per week per customer.

At this point, I thought it was time for a field trip.

I was in Ithaca, NY over the weekend and checked out its Walmart to see what its Let’s Move!-inspired actions looked like on the ground.  I particularly wanted to see how its “Great for You” labeling program was working out.   This, you may recall, identifies healthy products with this logo:

Although the labeling program was announced a year ago, I had to search hard to find any examples.  Here are a couple in the produce section.

Only a few bins of produce were marked with those labels.  There’s a tiny one in the picture below in front of some clementines from Honduras, but none of the other foods in that section had labels.

I could not find another such label anywhere else in the store.

How else was this Walmart promoting healthier eating?  Its big in-store promotion that day was right along the produce section: a large display of Oreo Mega Stuf cookies (the ones with twice the filling and twice the calories of regular Oreos).  A man was handing out free samples and dollar-off coupons.  When I picked up a package to read the label he said “Don’t do that. Treat yourself.”

The Ithaca Walmart is a quarter of a mile from Wegmans, so I did some comparison shopping.  I was surprised to find that the prices were remarkably close—about the same or only slightly higher (explaining why the Walmart price advantage is only a couple of cents a day).

But the people who shopped in Wegmans looked more affluent and healthier than Walmart shoppers.

Although the prices are similar—and the fresh foods at Wegmans are of higher quality—that Walmart is much less crowded, sparsely staffed by poorly paid employees,  and somehow makes it more comfortable for very poor people to shop there.

My conclusions:

  • Walmart makes produce available at market prices to people who don’t feel comfortable going to Wegmans.
  • Walmart promises to open stores in low-income areas where Wegmans will not.

On this basis, does Walmart deserve this high level of White House praise and attention?

I don’t get it.

Minecraft being considered for PlayStation, Wii U probably not happening

by Richard Mitchell
firehose

Mojang's ever vigilant effort to lull the entire world into a Minecraft-induced coma continues, with the studio considering even more platforms for the ubiquitous time-sink. Though Minecraft currently has an exclusivity deal on Xbox, Mojang's Jens Bergensten, lead designer on Minecraft, recently told iGamer that the team will consider PlayStation platforms whenever the deal lapses. Those with dreams of a GamePad-enabled Wii U version may be out of luck, however, as he added that a port for Nintendo's console is "very unlikely."

And so Joystiq lives in fear of a possible Vita version of Minecraft, in which we might lose Jess Conditt forever.

Barrel-aged tea from Steven Smith and Rare Tea Cellar | National - TastingTable

by russiansledges
Smith and his partner Tony Tellin first began experimenting with aging their tea in local Pinot Noir barrels. Their Méthode Noir ($18 for 2 ounces) is a subtle blend; the flavors from the barrel are like grace notes of oak and spice, close to what you might find in a great Oregon Pinot. On the other side of the spectrum, Marcus makes a piney, smok-y and lush Willet Rye barrel-aged lapsang souchong called Forbidden Forest. It evokes that teenage summer when you stole a bottle of booze and made out with your crush from across the lake.
