'24' is back: Fox reviving hit series for 12 episodes in summer 2014 (update)

by Chris Welch

christ

Jack is back. Fox Broadcasting chief Kevin Reilly has announced that 24 will be returning in 2014. According to Brian Stelter of The New York Times, the show will run for 12 weeks — meaning producers plan to deviate from its longstanding format, where each hour-long episode represents an hour in realtime. When it debuted in 2001, that unique approach established 24 as one of the first network programs tailored for binge viewing sessions. The New Yorker's Emily Nussbaum shared that sentiment when we spoke to her last November, crediting 24 for breaking the network habit of putting out procedural episodes, where "any individual hour could be distributed in any order." Scenes of gratuitous torture toward terrorism suspects were also a new sight for television audiences in a post 9/11 climate.

Fox plans to switch things up for Jack Bauer's ninth day-long adventure. "What they'll be able to do is go in chronological order of the day, but skip hours," Reilly said. That means each hour viewers see will still be "real time," but 24's writers will be able to tell a tighter, more engrossing narrative. Apparently that idea came from showrunner Howard Gordon, who told Reilly that each 24-episode season of the show ultimately contained about 12 episodes of compelling storyline.

Rumors pointing to a 24 reboot reached a fever pitch in recent days, and star Kiefer Sutherland has already been attached to the project. Reilly says the show is likely to return to Fox at some point in May 2014.

Col Chris Hadfield, Canadian astronaut and Commander of the International Space Station, is preparing to return home to Earth. For the past six months he’s provided us all with truly awesome glimpses of our world and countless fascinating insights into what life is like in outer space, aboard the ISS. (What ever will we do without him?) But before he goes, Commander Hadfield has gifted us with a song. It gave us goosebumps and is pretty much one of the best things ever:

With deference to the genius of David Bowie, here’s Space Oddity, recorded on Station. A last glimpse of the World.

Huge thanks in the making of the video to the talented trio of Emm Gryner, Joe Corcoran and Andrew Tidby, plus Evan Hadfield and all at the CSA.

Data Leak Spurs Huge Offshore Tax Evasion Investigation

by Soulskill
New submitter lxrocks writes "Tax authorities in the U.S., Britain, and Australia have announced they are working with a gigantic cache of leaked data that may be the beginnings of one of the largest tax investigations in history. The secret records are believed to include those obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists that lay bare the individuals behind covert companies and private trusts in the British Virgin Islands, the Cook Islands, Singapore and other offshore hideaways. The IRS said, 'There is nothing illegal about holding assets through offshore entities; however, such offshore arrangements are often used to avoid or evade tax liabilities on income represented by the principal or on the income generated by the underlying assets. In addition, advisors may be subject to civil penalties or criminal prosecution for promoting such arrangements as a means to avoid or evade tax liability or circumvent information reporting requirements.'"

Apple Deluged By Police Demands To Decrypt iPhones

by Soulskill

"the ATF was 'placed on a waiting list by the company.' "
"there would be at least a 7-week delay"

New submitter ukemike points out an article at CNET reporting on a how there's a "waiting list" for Apple to decypt iPhones seized by various law enforcement agencies. This suggests two important issues: first, that Apple is apparently both capable of and willing to help with these requests, and second, that there are too many of them for the company to process as they come in. From the article: "Court documents show that federal agents were so stymied by the encrypted iPhone 4S of a Kentucky man accused of distributing crack cocaine that they turned to Apple for decryption help last year. An agent at the ATF, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, 'contacted Apple to obtain assistance in unlocking the device,' U.S. District Judge Karen Caldwell wrote in a recent opinion. But, she wrote, the ATF was 'placed on a waiting list by the company.' A search warrant affidavit prepared by ATF agent Rob Maynard says that, for nearly three months last summer, he "attempted to locate a local, state, or federal law enforcement agency with the forensic capabilities to unlock' an iPhone 4S. But after each police agency responded by saying they 'did not have the forensic capability,' Maynard resorted to asking Cupertino. Because the waiting list had grown so long, there would be at least a 7-week delay, Maynard says he was told by Joann Chang, a legal specialist in Apple's litigation group. It's unclear how long the process took, but it appears to have been at least four months."

Mozilla Handing Out Free Firefox OS Developer Phones To Bolster App Marketplace

by Soulskill
MojoKid writes "Is the world really ready to shift from native apps to HTML5 Web apps? Probably not, at least not in North America yet, but developing nations may see it differently. That's the hope with Firefox OS, a web-based operating system that's (in theory) a lot more open. Of course, one needs only look at Microsoft's battle to get Windows Phone into a place of competition to realize that gaining market share is no easy task, which is why Mozilla will soon be handing out Firefox OS developer phones in order to bolster that. The company's goal is to get app builders to build for Firefox OS, so Mozilla is sending out free Preview handsets for folks to tinker with."

Vulnerability Found In Skyrim, Fallout, Other Bethesda Games

by Soulskill

great

An anonymous reader writes "The author of this article goes over a format string vulnerability he found in The Elder Scrolls series starting with Morrowind and going all the way up to Skyrim. It's not something that will likely be exploited, but it's interesting that the vulnerability has lasted through a decade of games. 'Functions like printf() and its variants allow us to view and manipulate the program’s running stack frame by specifying certain format string characters. By passing %08x.%08x.%08x.%08x.%08x, we get 5 parameters from the stack and display them in an 8-digit padded hex format. The format string specifier ‘%s’ displays memory from an address that is supplied on the stack. Then there’s the %n format string specifier – the one that crashes applications because it writes addresses to the stack. Powerful stuff.'"

ANNE passes its Kickstarter goal with more than a week to go

by Jessica Conditt

"At $90,000, ANNE would have achievements and a Gender Swap mode"
I can't believe I have a 'purchasing protagonist gender customization in games through Kickstarter stretch goals beat'

ANNE reaches Kickstarter goal with 11 days left
ANNE, the 2D nostalgia-laden platformer from developer Mo, hit its $70,000 Kickstarter goal, and from today it still has nine days left to earn more money. In a multilingual thank you update, Mo said words couldn't express his gratitude, so he created the happy robot image above.

"For sure the money is what will allow me to get the job done, but knowing that there are people like you out there that believe in my game, in me, just this is worth more than money," Mo said.

The first stretch goal for ANNE is $80,000 and it would add Mac and Linux versions of the game to Mo's development schedule. At $90,000, ANNE would have achievements and a Gender Swap mode, and later stretch goals (up to $150,000), add Ouya, PSN, Vita and Wii U versions.

ANNE is a combination of ideas from some of Mo's favorite 16-bit games, including Mega Man, Contra, Gradius and Super Metroid. That last one was a big inspiration, Mo told Joystiq in April.

"I remember at the beginning, you had this amazing ship," he said. "A crazy sprite landing slowly and then, the next thing you know, you're just on foot. And I was just, 'What a tease.' What if you could actually go in [the ship] and fly? What would that look like, and how fun would that be? So basically, it's picking up from just questioning myself and just trying to see what, you know, what am I really looking for as a player right now?"

Neil Gaiman gives Doctor Who's Cybermen what they need: a new legend

by Charlie Jane Anders
firehose

"The Doctor is already a cold, manipulative, sarcastic fucker, who views his regular companion more as a scientific curiosity than as a person. So when you take away the Doctor's human emotions and scruples, you get... the Doctor."
enjoyed this episode immensely, though still not as much as The Doctor's Wife

Doctor Who has been many television shows over the years, but for many people the show reached its perfect formula in the mid-1960s, with stories about a handful of people trying to withstand an army of Cybermen. Or Ice Warriors. Or Yeti. Neil Gaiman is one of those people, and he's created a perfect tribute to that era of Who.

'This is Spinal Tap' album reissued on vinyl for the first time in 30 years

by Adi Robertson

It's a fine line between clever and stupid, but the 1984 faux-documentary This is Spinal Tap walked it perfectly, and Spinal Tap's self-titled album is coming back in its original black vinyl. While it's obviously been available in modern formats, this is the first time in decades that record aficionados can get their hands on a new copy. The album will come with the original liner notes, with an all-black color scheme. Naturally, it's launching on June 11th — though you can pre-order it from Amazon or The Control Group — and includes 11 tracks, including the classics "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight," "Stonehenge," and "Hell Hole." If you can't wait until June, of course, you can always go ahead and laser-cut your own copy on some wood.
