Introducing the AxiDraw V3

by Windell Oskay

We are pleased to introduce the AxiDraw V3, a new generation of our flagship writing and drawing machine.

This new AxiDraw has been redesigned from the ground up for high performance. It features smooth rolling wheels on custom aluminum extrusions, specially designed for high stiffness and light weight. Its sturdy, rigid construction gives it finer quality output and in most applications allows it to operate at up to twice the speed of the previous AxiDraw, which it replaces.

As with the previous version, AxiDraw is a simple, modern, precise, and versatile pen plotter, capable of writing or drawing on almost any flat surface. It can write with fountain pens, permanent markers, and other writing implements to handle an endless variety of applications. Its unique design features a writing head that extends beyond the body of the machine, making it possible to draw on objects bigger than the machine itself.

AxiDraw V3 is available to order today, and begins shipping next week. See it in action and learn more on the product page.

The Mobile Phone PixelSWaLL

by James Hobson

mobile pixel wall

As much as we hate to admit it, smart phones have become somewhat of a disposable item in today’s society. People upgrade their phones constantly and simply chuck their old ones. Of course, there’s plenty of things you can do with slightly out of date phones… Here’s one we haven’t seen before — a wireless multi-phone display!

It’s called the PixelSWaLL, and according to the author,  his software can control up to 240 Android devices! To run this demo with just 9 phones, he’s using an old Apple Macbook running Windows 7 bootcamp, which sends the display info using an old Telmex router. Each phone or tablet runs the Android terminal application  using Eclipse ADT which renders OpenGL in real-time. The server application was made with Delphi 7 and uses the DSPack library to read video files in order to send them over UDP via Indy 10. It’s a bit of a mouthful to explain, but the resulting display array is pretty cool!

Time to start collecting phones…

[Thanks Axel!]

This Day in Blogging History: Mario "coin" sheet-music; Senator to AIG execs: kill yourselves; Bruce Sterling's open-door SXSW party

by Cory Doctorow

One year ago today
Sheet music for the Mario "coin" sound: From the Mario Piano site.

Five years ago today
Sen. Grassley to AIG execs: quit or commit ritual suicide: the first thing that would make me feel a little bit better toward them if they'd follow the Japanese example and come before the American people and take that deep bow and say, I'm sorry, and then either do one of two things: resign or go commit suicide.

Ten years ago today
Aftermath of Bruce Sterling's open-door SXSW party: The cops showed up. There was no dancing or loud music. Those were human beings *TALKING SO LOUDLY*that they could be heard as a steady dull roar two blocks away.

Delivery Man Trailer Arrives

Delivery Man Trailer Arrives

Vince Vaughn is a dad. 533 times...

Canadian comedy Starbuck was a huge hit in its native land, so naturally the remake rights were grabbed so that Americans wouldn't have to listen to any foreign accents, eh. And to avoid any confusion with excited Battlestar Galactica fans, the name was changed to Delivery Man. The first trailer for the film is lurking below.

Vince Vaughn stars as David Wozniak, who discovers that, through a sperm donation snafu back in the 1990s, he’s now the father of several children. 533 children to be exact, and now they’ve formed a group and are suing to discover his true identity. Naturally, Dave’s not too thrilled.

As the pressure rises, Dave has to decide whether he’ll stay anonymous or face the multiple kiddie music. As we see in the teaser, his lawyer / buddy (Chris Pratt) isn’t much help.

With the original film’s writer director Ken Scott once more pulling double duty and Cobie Smulders, Britt Roberson, Jack Reynor and Bobby Moynihan aboard, Delivery Man is set to arrive in the UK on October 11. Fingers crossed it’s as chucklesome as the Canadian version…

He's Got a Mug Like a Dick Tracy Character!

by Eric Stettmeier
A coffee mug, see...myeah!

More Dick Tracy fun!

I've had this coffee mug since the Disney movie was released in 1990. It was made by Applause and probably came from Hallmark or something. It's useless as a coffee mug, because it has functional wheels! A cute gimmick, but I don't need my coffee on wheels, especially since I live in California. Earthquakes and rolling coffee mugs don't mix.

So instead I use it to hold pens and pencils. And ironically it has never once rolled away and spilled. Sigh.

I never realized it until now, but with a little minor modification this could easily be made into a Clyde Barrow getaway car mug! Cool!
