Our clearest view yet of Antarctica stripped of all its ice

The British Antarctic Survey has produced the sharpest image yet of Antarctica’s rugged topography. And as you can clearly see, without its mile-thick layer of ice, the polar continent would be an incredibly mountainous terrain, indeed.

SimCity Mac version delayed to August, Update 5 coming soon to PC

by Samit Sarkar
firehose

The "Out of Money" message now says "Can't find work" when appropriate
Cash gifts are now delivered electronically, not by truck. This should improve the efficiency of gifting.
Fixed an issue where Sims would not be able to take transit out of cities with lots of streetcars or shuttle buses. This could cause some cases where commuting Sims could not return home and their homes would go abandoned.

The Mac version of SimCity has been delayed to August, developer EA Maxis announced today.

Publisher Electronic Arts said in April that it planned to launch the Mac version June 11. People who have already purchased the Windows PC version will get a Mac copy for free on Origin, and vice versa.

"We have made this tough decision because we do not believe [the Mac version] is ready for prime time yet," said Kip Katsarelis, SimCity's senior producer, on the game's website. "We want to ensure the Mac is a great experience for our players and that is why we are taking more time."

To appease potential Mac players, Maxis will give all of them the SimCity Launch Park, a new area for early adopters that was released for the PC version of the game in Update 4 last month.

The next patch for SimCity on PC, Update 5, is set to be released "in a couple of weeks," said Katsarelis. The changes contained within are geared toward multiplayer and multi-city play, such as improvements to regional unlocks and commuting. Maxis has already gathered fan feedback on the SimCity forums for Update 6, which will focus on improvements to residential, commercial and industrial zoning.

You can check out the full list of patch notes for Update 5 below.

  • New: Historic Price charts for Global Market resources are available from the SimCity World button on the main menu.
  • New: The Region Wall chat has been completely updated with a new look and new functionality! Chat functions more efficiently and it's much easier to communicate with other players. Time stamps show on chat messages on rollover. Regional events are easier to read and can be toggled on and off.
  • New: Added a filter for friends' regions in the join region section.
  • New: Trading control. Added feature to give players more control over their utilities. Players can now choose whether or not to keep their power, water or sewage local. This setting can be found on the information panel accessible by clicking on the power plant, water tower, or sewage pipe or plant. Sharing with the region is on by default.
  • New: Regional Missions: Added seven new regional missions: Drink It Up!, Plug In, So Stoked, The Wheels on the Bus, Ferry Dust, Station to Station, and Riding Coach.
  • New: Regional Achievement: Added a new regional achievement, Field Trip!
  • Gifting Improvements: Cash gifts are now delivered electronically, not by truck. This should improve the efficiency of gifting.
  • Resource gifts: Resource gifts will happen more reliably. Multiple trucks can make deliveries at once if they are available in the sending city and the truck capacities have been increased.
  • Great Works Improvements: Delivery trucks will mark their resources as dropped off as soon as they reach the Great Works, instead of when they arrive back in the city. This will make tracking time more reliable.
  • Great Works Improvements: Update to have all resources at Great Works handled at the regional level. This will address players in different cities seeing different resources once the server has processed the region and cities.
  • Great Works Improvements: Fixed an issue where an Arcology would maintain power from the region and fixed an issue where shoppers would not increase at the Arcology as it was leveled up. This will update in both existing and new Arcologies.
  • Great Works Improvements: Tuned the Solar Farm.
  • Regional Unlocks: The advanced coal mine unlocks regionally. Fixed issue where the Trade HQ sometimes did not unlock.
  • Fire Advisor Trading clarity: Tuned the Fire advisor so they do not tell you that neighbors are sending fire trucks when your neighbor has no fire stations.
  • Trading: School buses that travel from a neighbor's city will show that city's avatar.
  • Regional Commuting: Fixed an issue where Sims would not be able to take transit out of cities with lots of streetcars or shuttle buses. This could cause some cases where commuting Sims could not return home and their homes would go abandoned.
  • Garbage Trucks and Recycling Trucks: Fixed an issue that some cities experienced where garbage and recycling trucks do not leave their buildings or disappeared when trading service with neighbors. Existing cities who have trucks that have disappeared will have to demolish their missing trucks' garages and plop new garages.
  • Text Clarification: The "Out of Money" message now says "Can't find work" when appropriate in rollover feedback and the approval rating UI. This is to clarify your Sims' actual need.

Vesper, a minimalist notes app from John Gruber and Brent Simmons (hands-on)

by Ellis Hamburger
firehose

'Day One, a "journal" app that also costs $4.99, manages to pack in far more features inside an almost equally simple interface.'

In an App Store entirely oversaturated with notes apps, it's not easy to stand out. Vesper, an iPhone app which launches today, is at first glance remarkable because it was built by Apple pundit John Gruber (of Daring Fireball), developer Brent Simmons (known for MarsEdit and NetNewsWire), and veteran interface designer Dave Wiskus. The supergroup met up several months ago and communally longed for a dead simple notes experience with tags on iPhone. Soon after, they decided to form a software company together called Q Branch, named after James Bond's crafty quartermaster. Today, Vesper hits the app store, but is it as impressive as its pedigree would suggest?

Is the app as impressive as its pedigree would suggest?

Vesper feels like a pared down version of Simplenote, a note-taking app which already had just a few core functions in mind. All you can do in Vesper is create a note, type some text, add a photo, and list some tags like "Recipes" or "Ideas." From here you can email, message, copy, or delete the note you're working on. Back in the app's main "list view" screen you can re-arrange notes, filter notes by tag using the app's drawer, and swipe to archive a note you no longer need. There's no cloud syncing to speak of, gallery views for all the photos you've added, or settings menu to change font sizes. Vesper is simply a list of notes and tags.

"Collect your thoughts," is the app's tagline, an indication that it doesn't aim to replace Evernote as much as it hopes to help you record moments, ideas, recipes, and other snippets of things as quickly as possible. Vesper is a good app, but won't feel "feature complete" to people looking for a modern, multiplatform notes experience. Its price tag ($4.99) is bound to scare away many people, especially since the app offers no killer functionality that make it a must-buy. It instead strips away functionality for the sake of ease of use, which for some, could lower the barrier to pulling out your phone and tapping around to compose a note. Yet, Day One, a "journal" app that also costs $4.99, manages to pack in far more features inside an almost equally simple interface.

"Our goal was to make it such that, if a quick little thought entered your head that you might want to put in Vesper, the appeal of using the app would push you over the edge to do it, to put it in Vesper rather than just keep it in your head. A complete reduction of friction," Gruber said in an interview with MacWorld. Vesper doesn't have as much bite as the drink of the same name James Bond once ordered, but for those looking for a truly simple and cloud-less notes experience, it could be worth a shot.

Film: Movie Review: Much Ado About Nothing

by A.A. Dowd
firehose

"The performances are strong enough, in fact, to almost completely compensate for the tossed-off nature of the movie, which basically amounts to a bunch of close friends getting together to stage a reading."

Commonplace as it’s become, doing Shakespeare in modern dress is still tricky business. The burden is mainly on the actors, who have to properly deliver the playwright’s archaic, acrobatic wordplay while still sounding like they belong in the here and now. (Sorry, DiCaprio fans, but Leo nailed only half the equation in Romeo + Juliet—and it wasn’t the half that had anything to do with dialogue.) So kudos to the cast of Much Ado About Nothing, Joss Whedon’s scrappy, snappy take of one of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies. With little exception, the players assembled here—most of them veterans of the Whedonverse—pull off that difficult balancing act with gusto. The performances are strong enough, in fact, to almost completely compensate for the tossed-off nature of the movie, which basically amounts to a bunch of close friends getting together to stage a reading.

Film: Movie Review: The Internship

by A.A. Dowd
firehose

"the real star of The Internship is Google itself, and what a self-aggrandizing diva she is. In one final insult, the movie presents the company as a noble savior of small-businesses, beating back an economic depression one sponsorship sale at a time. It’s enough to make a lifelong Googler want to switch to Bing."

Product placement is one thing; building a whole movie around the glorification of a multinational corporation is something else entirely. Essentially a feature-length sponsored post, The Internship casts Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as middle-aged salesmen who find themselves competing against braniac college kids for a job at Google. As the film incessantly reminds viewers, the company—envisioned here as a professional paradise, where the food is free, diversity is key, and cars drive themselves—is regularly voted the greatest place to work in America. Characters go further, describing it as an “engine for change,” the “Garden of Eden,” and “the best amusement park you’ve ever been to, times a million.” If this excessively flattering farce is to be believed, Googliness is next to godliness.

Occasionally, the relentless PR campaign pauses long enough for someone to make a joke or two. Look past all the Google-gushing, and The Internship ...

Logitech looks to Kickstarter for accessory ideas with latest acquisition

by Matt Brian
firehose

Kickstarter endgame: Convenient catalog for A&M departments

Logitech has got itself into the Kickstarter business, albeit via an indirect route. The company announced today it has acquired Chicago-based studio TT Design Labs, one of the crowdfunding site's many success stories. TT Design Labs is recognized for two unique smartphone accessories, which have raised more than $250,000 in Kickstarter funding between them. The company's co-founders will join Logitech's design teams, while its two products — the TidyTilt and JustMount — have already been incorporated into Logitech's accessory line-up.

The TidyTilt and JustMount are already available for pre-order on Logitech's website

Today, Logitech is best known for its smartphone and tablet accessories, but the company has struggled financially in recent months. In its third fiscal quarter, Logitech posted an $180 million operating loss, discontinuing its "non-strategic products" which included video game console peripherals and speaker docks.

Kickstarter has been heralded for its crowdfunding platform and for helping independent designers and studios seek the funds they need to make their visions a reality. Recent success stories include the Ouya Android gaming console and the Pebble smartwatch. With the backing of the public, successful Kickstarter funded companies are capable of taking on public corporations like Logitech and Belkin, perhaps explaining why acquisitions are very rare. Today's announcement proves Logitech is monitoring innovation in the crowdfunding space and is adapting its business, which may allow it to stay relevant as public demand for inventive new products continues to grow.

In Brief: NYC Football Club Sparks Imagination

by Armin

this would be a fantastic logo for DC United, where there's a pentagon that everyone outside of stupid fucking New York associates with a city

NYC FC Designer Proposals

Late last month, Major League Soccer announced that a new expansion team will join the league in 2015: New York City Football Club (NYC FC). This will bring soccer to the New York metropolitan area and perhaps also ignite yet another "crosstown" rivalry — a la Yankees vs. Mets, Knicks vs. Nets — with the other MLS team, New York Red Bulls that play in the less glamorous suburb of Harrison, New Jersey. Less than a month after the announcement, two soccer and design aficionados have taken it upon themselves to design a proper identity for the new team.

I really like the subway token feel of the primary mark, it's the first use of the multi-stroke trend that makes sense and actually adds meaning to the logo. The secondary mark feels a little flimsy by comparison and hard to read at smaller sizes. Typography is edgy and contemporary. Cap looks almost like it belongs on a cop or firefighter, hence: win.

I love the old-school feel of the FC monogram and the ambition that you wouldn't even need to say "NYC". I bet legal would have a difference of opinion. The flared approach to the pentagon is a nice contrast to the more basic shape of Hyperakt's proposal and adds to the vintage feel. Unis are sexy. The hoodie is something I need, hence: win.

The exploit, as noted by the hacker, makes use of specially crafted HTTP queries that inject PHP commands. The exploit uses POST request to launch a PHP interpreter and the attacker can set any configuration parameters through the POST request. Once invoked, the interpreter can be used to execute arbitrary commands."

Epic announces Oculus Rift support for Unreal Engine 4

by Adi Robertson

significant considering how many companies use Unreal

Epic Games has officially announced support for the Oculus Rift on the Unreal Engine 4. In a release today, the company announced the members of its UE4 Integrated Partners Program, a group of companies whose technology will be tightly integrated with the latest engine. Among Autodesk, Intel, Nvidia, and other big names, you'll find Oculus VR, whose virtual reality headset has captured the imagination of many gamers and developers. As Engadget points out, Epic has said before that it was working on support for the Oculus Rift. But this announcement makes it clear that Epic will be working with Oculus to make Unreal Engine 4 work as smoothly as possible on the Rift, and that there will be an ongoing relationship between the two.

Epic isn't the only big name to express interest in supporting the Rift. EA's Frank Vitz is exploring the possibility of integrating Rift support into the new Frostbite Engine, and Valve has worked on porting several of its games for the headset. John Carmack of Id Software was also an early supporter of the project. Tailoring engines for the Rift and supporting existing games is just part of the problem Oculus faces, however. The immersion and head-tracking mechanisms of the Rift often work poorly with fast-paced shooters or other games that require deft control, meaning that developers will need to think not just about how to get games running, but what kind of experiences actually work in virtual reality.

Cool: 1369 now delivers iced coffee in growlers - Boston Business Journal

by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy
firehose

welcome to Portland
this reminds me that I haven't gotten a Stumptown growler yet

This summer, Cambridge locals and workers will have the opportunity to quench their thirst with growlers full of cold-brewed iced coffee delivered by bicycle to their doorsteps.

At locations in Inman and in Central Square, 1369 Coffee House brews iced coffee by soaking ground coffee in cold water.

“People always told us, ‘I love your iced coffee, I wish I could have it in my house,’” said Joshua Gerber, owner of 1369 Coffee House. The Cambridge coffee shop started bottling their product in half-gallon glass jugs, usually used to contain beer, and delivering them to their customers in the area.

Growlers will be shipped to the clients every Wednesday starting tomorrow, June 5. Customers can sign up for the iced-coffee delivery service online and order any number of growlers to be delivered weekly or biweekly.

At the beginning of the week 25 customers, including business and residents, had signed up for the coffee delivery system, Gerber said. “We are planning on going into the fall, stop in the winter, and start again next spring,” said Gerber. The coffee shop is also considering delivering other cold beverages.

As far as the iced coffee goes, the first growler will cost $25, after that the cost goes down to $20 when exchanging the empties. “We choose to use growlers because they have a nice size,” said Gerber. Each growler will contain between 8 to 10 cups of coffee.

In January 1369 will celebrate 20 years in business.

Stop everything. New Game Center CX game!

Before you take your shirt off, twist it ‘round your head, and spin it like a helicopter, things to note from the announcement tweeted above:

  • This announcement comes from G.rev, not IndiesZero, which developed the first two Game Center CX releases on DS.
  • We don’t know the platform yet. G.rev, however, has put out a single 3DS game: Kokuga, the shoot’em up that released in Japan last year and is possibly headed to the West. Apparently it’s for 3DS?
  • G.rev is mostly known for putting out shmups (Senko no Ronde, Under Defeat).
  • Even if it does release for 3DS, there’s little guarantee it will come to the West. And the 3DS, as you might remember, is region-locked.

Yeah, so you might want to leave your shirt on. More details will be disclosed in the next new episode of Game Center CX. Thanks to Meeceace for the GIF.
