Siftlinks [Link]

Siftlinks is very similar to something I made for myself. It scans your Twitter "friend" feed and turns links into an RSS feed. This is timely. The old Twitter API no longer works, which means I need to rewrite my little Python script. Maybe I'll just switch to Siftlinks.

Apple begins direct sales of iPhones and Macs in Russia for the first time

by Matt Brian

More than a year after it registered a new distribution arm in the country, Apple has opened an online store in Russia. Consumers are now able to order iPhones, iPads, and Macs directly via the company's website for the first time — products were previously only available via third-party resellers — signalling that Apple could be preparing to open its first bricks and mortar stores in the country.

Apple began making preparations for its launch in August 2012, registering “Apple Rus,” a distribution arm reportedly headed by Vitaly Morozko — Apple's local legal advisor who now serves as director general. The company has an office presence in Russia, specializing in marketing and digital sales, but shipments were handled by distribution partners for more than 15 years. Apple has rapidly expanded its presence in emerging markets as growth of smartphone sales begins to slow in western markets, previously earmarking China as one of its most important regions. With international sales now exceeding sales in the US, Apple will look to ensure first-time customers in Russia return to buy phones, computers, and media directly from its online store. Should it open new bricks and mortar stores in the country, Apple will operate stores in 14 regional markets, adding to its 400 existing retail locations worldwide.

YouTube Removes Video of Reactions To Being Videoed

by Soulskill
theodp writes "To follow-up on an earlier Slashdot post, GeekWire reports that YouTube has removed Surveillance Camera Man's latest video of people's sometimes-violent reactions to being videoed, citing its policy of prohibiting content designed to harass, threaten or bully ("This video has been removed as a violation of YouTube's policy prohibiting content designed to harass, bully or threaten"). In a neat coincidence, the YouTube ban comes just after similar complaints were lodged against Google Glass. 'Some people also seem to feel threatened by Google Glass,' Philip De Cortes wrote in Google Glass Will Fail. 'They wonder if they're being recorded, and they feel like the tool could be used against them in some way.'"

Why I’m Not Contributing to Earthworm Jim Creator’s Kickstarter Campaign

Courtney shared this story from Comments on: Why I’m Not Contributing to Earthworm Jim Creator’s Kickstarter Campaign:
/

By Brian P Rubin | 25 June 2013 |

armikrog

Yesterday, lots of gaming sites reported that Nintendo has fast-tracked Pencil Test Studios to become an officially licensed developer for the Wii U, a move related to specifically to the developer’s efforts to Kickstart their adventure game project, Armikrog. With 48 hours left before the funding period ends, the campaign is a bit over $160,000 short of its $900,000 goal, with a $950,000 stretch goal to make a Wii U port a possibility. From what I can see, the game looks pretty damn cool,

But despite the fact that the video game world might be a bit better with the presence of a game like Armikrog, I’m not going to be contributing. That’s because of the involvement of Doug TenNapel, the artist responsible for creating Earthworm Jim and on whose work this game is entirely based. Don’t get me wrong: I really dug Earthworm Jim back in the day, and I even liked his shortlived cartoon series Project G.eeK.eR. But I’ve discovered that TenNapel has made his views on the world pretty clear in his columns for Breitbart.com a few years ago, not to mention some unfortunate public comments about same-sex marriage. Every person has the right to express his or her opinion in whatever way they like, and that’s one of the most important rights we’ve got here in the United States. On that same note, I have the right to express my opposition to those views with my words and with my dollars—specifically withholding them.

Now, we’re running into some tricky gray area here. Shouldn’t I support the project despite the creator’s views? After all, the game doesn’t seem to have much to do with TenNapel, nor will contributing to it mean that I’ve suddenly changed my views. Many people can—and do—separate the artist from the art.

But over the  years that I’ve been consuming art in various forms, be it film, novels, music, and games, I’ve tried to take a more conscious approach to what I support with my money, and what I don’t. And when it comes to Mr. TenNapel and the way he uses his platform as an artist, I have chosen not to support this project. I don’t want my contribution to help him find more ways to promote a worldview that I don’t agree with.

As an example, let’s talk about Orson Scott Card. His novel, Ender’s Game, is being made into a major blockbuster this fall, and the trailers look pretty great. But because of Card’s membership on the board of directors for the National Organization for Marriage, an organization with which I disagree pretty strongly, I decided that as much as I may have enjoyed his books, I don’t want my dollars going to a person who’s going to turn around and fund initiatives I despise. That was a choice I made, and one I’ll continue to make when Ender’s Game shows up in theaters later this year.

The act of “voting with your wallet” doesn’t end with people you might disagree with. Sometimes people who make art are particularly unappealing, like the by-now infamous Roman Polanski. There’s no doubt that his movies are fantastic—Chinatown is one of my favorites. But I find Polanski to be a reprehensible human being, and now that I’m old enough to understand that, I feel better about not supporting him despite missing out on what I’m sure are amazing films.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the fact that by even participating in any level of consumer culture, I’m supporting entities that aren’t necessarily good for the world in one way or another. If I started adding up the good and bad things that companies like EA or Best Buy or Exxon do every day, I’d end up not buying or even doing anything. I’d have to go live under a bridge in rags I found in the river, subsisting off of moss and fish I caught with my bare hands. Simply put, your money always goes somewhere, and it’s impossible to live in society without engaging in some form of consumer hypocrisy. I love my smartphone, but I’m sure I wouldn’t love the conditions under which it was manufactured.

So I admit the fact that I have to accept a certain level of frustration with the way my money goes to places I don’t like. But the age of Kickstarter brings with it a certain amount of transparency and intimacy that games coming from big companies don’t have. That means that we as consumers and gamers can curate the kind of art and artists we want to succeed—and withholding support in the form of not contributing to Kickstarter campaigns means that we have more direct control over what kind of art populates our world.

I may have had problems with Square Enix’s Tomb Raider based on what I’d heard the game’s executive producer had said. But whether I bought it or not wouldn’t have changed the fact that the game was going to come out anyway. And whether or not I was right to skip it is kind of a moot point: the reimagined Tomb Raider is out in the world no matter what I thought. That’s one of the perils of big businesses producing art in the form of books, music, movies, and, yes, games.

Kickstarter gives consumers of culture the chance to bring the art we want into the world, and to support the artists whose work and worldview we believe in. Simultaneously, it offers us the chance to decide what art and artists we don’t want to support. That’s why, whether you agree or not, whether the game would be good or not, I’ve chosen not to support Armikrog. I’m glad that I know more about where my money would’ve gone, and that I have the power to keep it in my pocket and out of making the world into something I don’t like. And if the invisible cost of that choice is the possible loss of a great game, I’m okay with that.

On one hand:
'Republicans keep trying to shut her down. Her 2008 victory was a squeaker over the Republican incumbent, and she pulled out another in 2012 after federal courts threw out a Republican gerrymandering plan that would have put her in a much more conservative district. Again, she became the last vote needed to deny Republicans a filibuster-proof majority (The 2012 firebombing of her office appears to have been a random act by a mentally ill homeless person). After her 2011 filibuster, the Republican-led house stripped her of her position on the education committee.'

On the other hand:
'She’s got “fashion icon status” in the state Capitol. At least that’s what The New York Times says. For this filibuster, she wore pink sneakers.'

Thanks, NYT

You know, the Fort Worth Democrat who stood for eleven hours to filibuster a bill in the Texas State Senate that would place new restrictions on abortion clinics and ban the practice after 20 weeks of pregnancy? Here’s what you need to know.

The 5 Grossest Russian Foods of Your Childhood

by Semechka

attn: saucie

If you grew up American in a Russian immigrant family, school lunches might’ve been an ordeal for you. The other kids just didn’t understand how half a kotleta slapped on a piece of black bread was your Grandma’s idea of a hamburger. While they indulged in their smorgasbord of American delicacies, you sulked that your lunch never came with a plastic toy, and that your baby bologna sandwich was decidedly less appetizing than the Oscar Mayer/Wonderbread pairing so popular amongst your peers. And try as you did to score some Gushers when shopping with Mama v Shopraitye, the answer was always the same: “A popa ne slipnitsa?

gamburger

 mmmda.

School lunch isn’t the only source of food-related grief one encounters growing up in a Russian household. When I was a kid, meals were a dreaded affair. Somehow my grandparents never grasped the concept of child-size portions, and were thus unsympathetic to my desperate pleas to escape the dinner table. Not to mention that Russian food isn’t the most “kid-friendly” cuisine. Case in point…

The 5 Grossest Russian Foods of Your Childhood

1. Holodets

Whoever decided that encasing shredded meat in a blob of salty jello could be even slightly appetizing was probably high off exhaust fumes. One morsel of this snot-flavored appetizer would send me reeling out of my dining chair in violent fits of nausea. If any one food could make headcheese look tasty by comparison, this would be it.

holodets

meat Jell-O, anyone?

2. Pickled Fruit

Want to gross out your American friends? Direct them to the section of your Russian grocery with the open vats of pickled tomatoes/watermelon/grapes/apples/cabbage/anything. When it comes to marinating produce, nothing in the Russian culinary tradition is sacred. At some low point in history, we decided collectively as a people that the question “Should we pickle it?” is entirely rhetorical.

“Can we pickle it?” “Yes we can!!!”

3. Salo

“Hey, let’s take some sliced pig lard, spice it, and serve it on black bread as a vodka-chaser.” Sliced. Pig. Lard. Need I say more?

mmm, spicy pig back.

4. Silyodka Pod Shuboy

Literally translates to “Herring Under a Fur Coat.” I’ll tell you something — there’s nothing vaguely resembling a “shuba” in this dish. This is a “salad” of marinated herring, topped with layers of boiled potatoes, eggs, beets, and copious amounts of — what else? — mayonnaise. One bite of this is a mouthful of Nope.

Masquerading as a cake, are we? Nice try.

5. Kvass

Basically carbonated bread juice. Similar to beer, except without all the pleasant side effects. Sometimes they put raisins or other random crap in it to mask what tastes like fermented dirt. If you have kids, spare them the displeasure of drinking this liquid rankness.

Bottoms up.

Other common Russian ingredients that are generally disagreeable:

Beef tongue, chicken gizzards, tripe (intestines), beef/goose/cod liver, milt.

….but the one treat that redeems it all?

Robot Dominates Air Hockey, Adapts To Opponents' Playing Style

by timothy

attn: saucie

colinneagle writes "Researchers at Chiba University in Japan have developed a robot that could frustrate teenagers worldwide with its impressive air hockey skills. What's remarkable about this air hockey-playing robot, which is not the first of its kind, is that it can sense human opponents' playing styles and adapt to defend against them. The key is how the computer controlling the robot views its opponent — at a speed of 500 frames per second. From there, the robot uses a three-layer control system to determine motion control, when it should hit the puck, defend its goal or stay still, and a third that determines how it should react to its opponent's playing style."

How A Great Google Workplace Turned Into A 'Nightmare'

firehose

"There in the women's bathroom of Google, a company regarded worldwide as great place to work, someone had scrawled graffiti in thick permanent marker: 'Zagat can suck my dick.'"

tl;dr: Melissa Mayer wanted to turn Zagat into a primary editorial source for Google. They ramped up contractor hiring, promoting the jobs as temp-to-perm. Then Larry Page took over and fucked Mayer over. Mayer left. Page acquired Frommer's and gave all the temp-to-perm jobs to the Frommer's acquihires, but kept all the Zagat temps--many of whom left full-time jobs at other travel writing gigs for a shot at Google--in NYC. Their morale plummeted. Page's directives even killed the Frommer's team's morale. Google told all the temps they wouldn't be renewed, then renewed them. Then the rest of the NYC office allegedly started excluding the Zagat crew from company activities. Mayer's lieutenant quit/was fired, nobody knows.

Has the Zagat acquisition been a waste of Google's time and money and gone terribly wrong?

Long filibuster against Texas abortion limits suspended - CBS News

firehose

'Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst determined that Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis strayed off the topic when she talked about a sonogram bill passed in 2011 and how the new abortion restrictions only compounded the anti-abortion laws in Texas.

Democrats immediately appealed the decision and set off a heated debate. Austin Democratic Sen. Kirk Watson appeared to be positioning himself to launch a new filibuster on Dewhurst's decision.

Davis offered some insight to her plans Monday night on Twitter:

The leadership may not want to listen to TX women, but they will have to listen to me. I intend to filibuster this bill. #SB5 #txlege

-- Wendy Davis (@WendyDavisTexas) June 25, 2013
Wearing pink tennis shoes to prepare for nearly 13 consecutive hours of standing, Davis began the day with a one-woman filibuster to block a GOP-led effort to impose stringent new abortion restrictions across the nation's second-most populous state.

The filibuster began at 11:18 a.m. CDT Tuesday and continued until 10:03 p.m., less than two hours before the midnight deadline marking the end of the 30-day special session.

Rules stipulate she remain standing, not lean on her desk or take any breaks -- even for meals or to use the bathroom. But she also had to stay on topic, and Republicans pointed out a mistake and later protested again when another lawmaker helped her with a back brace.

Republican Sen. Donna Campbell called the third point of order because of her remarks on the sonogram law. Under the rules, lawmakers can vote to end a filibuster after three sustained points of order.'

Running Ubuntu Linux Is Messy On The 2013 MacBook Air

Earlier this month, shortly after Intel announced their latest-generation Haswell processors, Apple rolled out their new 2013 MacBook Air laptops. From a hardware perspective, the new MacBook Airs are incredible. The 13-inch MacBook Air can get a 12-hour battery life with Intel Haswell CPU. The 11-inch model continues being an ultra portable computer and has excellent performance with its Core i5 Haswell processor and HD Graphics 5000. As soon as the Haswell MacBook Airs went on sale, I bought an 11-inch model for Linux testing. Ubuntu can be installed and run on the new Apple MacBook Air, but the experience is less than desirable.

Saints Row 4 refused classification in Australia due to 'alien narcotics' and an 'Alien Anal Probe'

by Jenna Pitcher
firehose

Australians fear the weirdest shit

Saints Row 4 was refused classification in Australia by the country's Classification Board because it featured a weapon called an "Alien Anal Probe" and an alien narcotic that gives players super powers when smoked, according to the Board's Decision Report obtained by Polygon.

Last night, the Australian Classification Board announced that it denied Saints Row 4 classification under the "Guidelines for the Classification of Computer Games," saying that the title "includes interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence which are not justified by context" and features use of "illicit or proscribed drug use" as incentives in the game, which is prohibited by the board's guidelines.

The "Alien Anal Probe" weapon, according to the report, can be "shoved into enemy's backsides," as well as in-game civilians. The Board decided that Saints Row 4 should be refused classification based on the weapon's design to be used to penetrate the anus of in-game enemies and civilians, which "constitutes a visual depiction of implied sexual violence that is interactive and not justify by context."

When using this weapon the play approaches a (clothed) victim from behind and thrusts the weapon between the victim's legs and then lifts them off the ground before pulling a trigger which launches the victim into the air. After the probe has been implicitly inserted into the victim's anus the area around their buttocks becomes pixelated highlighting that the aim of the weapon is to penetrate the victim's anus. The weapon can be used during gameplay on enemy characters or civilians.

Another contributing factor to the game's ban is the use of an alien narcotic. Not only does the board decry that the use of in-game drugs provide the player with incentives, "quantifiable" benefits and rewards but, according to the report, there is insufficient differentiation between real world drugs, such as cocaine and heroine, and the alien narcotic, which is obtained through a street dealer and smoked through a pipe.

The game contains an optional mission which involves the player obtaining and smoking drugs referred to as "alien narcotics." Smoking alien narcotics equips the player with superpowers which increase their in-game abilities allowing them to progress through the mission more easily...

After killing this dealer the player is again depicted smoking from a small glass pipe. Within moments the player begins to feel the effects of the drug, commenting "(my) powers feel limitless", "(I) feel like every muscle inside me is going to burst" and "holy crap we have superpowers". The player then embarks on a mission to locate and kill an enemy character and is depicted using superpowers which include increased speed and jumping abilities.

Saints Row 4 is the first video game in Australia to be refused classification since the country introduced an R18+ classification for video games earlier this year. Under Australia's current classification system, games sold at retail need to be classified by the Australian Classification Board. The country's Federal Parliament only passed legislation to create an R18+ category for video game classification in last February and the new classification system, which included the R18+ rating, came into effect Jan 1, 2013.

A Deep Silver spokesperson told Polygon last night that Saints Row 4 developer Volition is amending the video game so it can be resubmitted for classification and ultimately see a release in the country.

"Volition, the developer, reworking some of the code to create a version of the game for this territory by removing the content which could cause offence without reducing the outlandish gameplay that Saints Row fans know and love," the representative said.

Saints Row 4 is slated for release on Aug. 20 in North America for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC. The open-world game made it onto Polygon's Editor's Choice selections for E3 2013, alongside Titanfall, Infamous: Second Son and Dark Souls 2. The full Classification Board's decision report for Saints Row 4 can be viewed in full via the link.

Man of Steel versus Googliness

So I saw the latest Superman. I wanted to like it, especially after Pete’s enthusiastic recommendation and Ramsey’s eloquently philosophical one in the thread. Too much of the movie is given over to boring fight scenes. It’s just never clear what you have to do to kill someone from Krypton. The last long fight between Kal (Superman) and General Zod is especially ridiculous. They seemingly can throw each other around indefinitely, taking out whole skyscrapers and so forth, without either getting really hurt. Then we finally learn that it’s possible to choke the other guy to death. (Update: Pete in the thread below says Zod’s superneck was broken–believe him, by the time it happened I was too bored to care.) What a relief! But relief comes too slowly for me.

The movie is also very careless on the human cost of the collateral damage of all that violence. Lots and lots of big buildings go up in smoke, but you don’t know for sure that even one citizen of Gotham City Metropolis actually died. So MAN OF STEEL is too much a video game or cartoon for me. The film for this and other reasons (look at the thread for speculation about the destruction of those Kryptonian babies–are they really babies?) is hardly a celebration of the sanctity of life. Both Superman and Zog Zod agree that it’s either US or THEM, and it’s lucky for us that Superman thinks of us earthlings as his “us.” There’s no COSMOPOLITAN message here. here. (Update: It is true that Clark initially envisions that the Kryptonians can share earth with us, but that’s because he doesn’t understand who they are, what they’ve been made for. His final thought is “Krypton had its chance!” Pete is probably right that Krypton makes a comeback in some sequel; the status of the future Kryptonians encoded in Superman’s body isn’t clear. The interesting thought–a thought that maybe begins in the REPUBLIC–concerns whether people genetically created to be some part of a “city” are really fully human, whole persons. Does irreducible individuality or personality ironically elude the intentions of the merely political creator? That might be one ironic subtext of “evolution always wins.” Evolution–which includes human freedom–wins over every attempt to control it for non-natural purposes. You super-fans might be thinking; he’s now thinking that the movie is smarter than he originally thought.)

I actually felt Zod’s pain. He’s not a bad guy. He was bred, after all, to defend his people and their eugenic scheme. His is a purpose-driven life. It seemed unfair to say that he wasn’t, but the people of earth are, bred for morality. The early Krypton, apparently, was an empire–not a republic. But it abandoned its colonial outreach, adopted forced population control, and started to artificially bred citizens for various places in their regime–workers, warriors, and leaders. That led to the regime’s atrophying to the point of destruction. An enlightened scientist (Superman’s dad–the Crowe character) did see, if too late, the need to return to a world of choice and chance, and so making the babies the old-fashioned way. The presence of such a wise man (overplayed by Russell Crowe) suggests that they were even breeding philosopher-kings, even if, not surprisingly, not reliably.

So even if we can criticize Father Barron for understanding Plato’s REPUBLIC as a real program for political reform, he is right to see the film as a defense of an “open society” (modern American imperial freedom) against politicized eugenics as the foundation of a closed society. We also see that an open society depends upon hope, and what was wrong with Krypton is that it hadn’t kept hope alive in some sense. (Superman’s S is actually Kryptonian for hope.) But hope in what? We see Clark/Kal/Superman in church talking with a young priest who advises him to take the leap of faith that precedes trust. But faith in who or what?

My big objection, of course, is that all this philosophical or spiritual stuff isn’t really developed. (Or stupid: We learn that SUPERMAN is 33; if that means something, he should have died for our sins.) There’s too much boring action instead. I do have to admit that Ramsey is right that Kevin Costner (who also overplays his part, but that’s his style) is moving as a foster father who sacrifices his life for a son he can’t fully understand. And Crowe is quite the caring biological father to Kal. So Superman has two dads, and he’s lucky (very lucky) to have them both. It’s always great to see Amy Adams, but her gutsy Lois Lane is pretty darn underdeveloped too.

You might say that the real problem is that MAN OF STEEL’s teaching style just doesn’t match my learning style. For one thing, I found out once again that 3-D glasses don’t work me. Because my eyes don’t work together, I have no real depth perception.

I also saw THE INTERNSHIP. It’s the most dystopian movie ever made. It celebrates the triumph of GOOGLINESS over MANLINESS. We will soon be controlled by techno-geeks with enough collaborative “people skills” and fake-EASTERN insight to control us all while never leaving the GOOGLE campus with its free pudding and sleep pods. I just hope SUPERMAN can stop them before it’s too late.

THE SCRIPT DOES NOT PORTRAY TURING AS STRAIGHT. I REPEAT, THE SCRIPT DOES NOT PORTRAY TURING AS STRAIGHT!

I know someone who got a hold of the leaked script, and they say that there is nothing sexual between the two characters whatsoever.

The Imitation Game’s script topped the Blacklist, which lists the best screenplays of the year (some of which end up being Oscar nominated after the films are released) in 2011. If that’s anything to go by it’s certainly not going to be a piece of crap.

And lo and behold, look what the Blacklist article mentions about The Imitation game: “[It is] the story of British WWII cryptographer Alan Turing, who cracked the German Enigma code and later poisoned himself after being criminally prosecuted for being a homosexual.”

Furthermore, Benedict Cumberbatch knows that Turing was a homosexual and that he was persecuted for it. He’s said it in a few interviews, such as at the end of this one and this one at 20:20. Benedict always wants to portray characters based on real people as accurate as possible- he even went to Stephen Hawking himself when he was preparing for his portrayal of him back in 2004. I really doubt he would take on a role in a biopic without knowing anything about the person first, and would probably turn it down if it was so blatantly inaccurate.

I was informed that the production company (Black Bear Pictures) responded to someone who showed them the article with this@prairiehomo We assure you there were almost no truths in this weekend’s article. We couldn’t imagine making a movie where Alan is straight.

I understand that queer erasure is a really huge issue, and IF the script actually made Turing straight I would be furious! But considering what I know about the script, these articles floating around recently seem to blow things out of proportion. We won’t know exactly how the film will be until it comes out!

Thanks for the clarification. After doing some digging it looks like the original post was written by someone who based it off this article in the Sunday Times: http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/news/uk_news/Arts/article1277723.ece

And it looks like that original poster may have misinterpreted some of that article. I also don’t know if the bit about the biographer objecting holds merit.

Let’s hope for the best.

Edit: Also the poor girl who made the original tumblr post about this that got like a million reblogs has deleted it and has had to change blogs because of all the harassment she’s getting about misinterpreting the article. She didn’t expect it to go beyond her little group of friends but it blew up. Poor thing.

Atari requested Baldur's Gate: EE removal from iOS, Oster says

Atari responsible for Baldur's Gate EE iOS removal
Beamdog CEO Trent Oster has said that Atari is the "unknown publishing partner" behind the removal of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition from the iOS App Store. "At the request of Atari legal we removed the game from sale on Beamdog and the App stores," Oster told Game Informer recently. "Atari is still selling the game through their channels."

Those "channels" would be the official Atari site, Steam, and Amazon.com, where the game is still available for sale. It's unclear why Atari wouldn't want the game selling in other places, but Oster has said both a patch and an enhanced sequel have been put on hold due to the dispute.

"We're trying to remedy the situation and I'm hopeful we can come to an arrangement," he said to Game Informer. Joystiq has reached out to Atari for more information, and will update here if we hear back.

Music: Newswire: Chris Brown's metaphorical hit-and-run life now includes literal hit-and-run

by Sean O'Neal

this fuckin' guy

Having explored the various facets of America’s celebrity worship through exhibitions satirical, political, and even scatological, controversial performance artist Chris Brown recently took a page from David Cronenberg’s Crash, rear-ending a woman in an auto accident for all of us to experience. The happening—a theatrical metaphor for the nation’s fascination with watching wrecks play out in the lives of the famous, as well as an actual famous-person wreck—was staged last month in Los Angeles. According to the L.A. City Attorney’s Office, Brown now faces two misdemeanor charges that may not only violate the self-delusions we harbor about control, but also his probation, potentially sending him to prison for up to a year.

These include the charge of “hit-and-run”—evoking deliberate reference to Brown’s violent assault of Rihanna and his subsequent escape from any real consequences amid rampant obfuscation and denial. “Indeed, what ...

Rick Moranis On Where He's Been For 20 Years

firehose

ladies: he's single

BA: Who are your people? You said you don’t stay in touch with “those guys.” I don’t know who that means, SCTV people or Steve [Martin] …

RM: I haven’t been in touch with anyone I’ve worked with for over 20 years.

BA: The scripts that have been thrown your way over the years. More times than not, they’re hitting you up for sequels and threequels?

RM: Not anymore. I think the sequels exhausted themselves from the old franchises. So I hadn’t heard any of that stuff for many years now.

BA: Spaceballs II: The Search for More Money was a conversation?

RM: Mel wanted to do a sequel after it became a cult video hit. It wasn’t a box office hit. It was a cult video hit, and MGM wanted to do a sequel. And my idea for it was Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II. And I was unable to make a deal with Mel. I couldn’t make a deal.

BA: In terms of just getting enough money?

RM: I wasn’t privy to what the budget was or anything, but the deal he presented me, what he wanted me to do, was not workable. It was two or three years later. He wanted me to … it’s better if I don’t get into the particulars of it. Because it is so specific, it’s counter-productive to talk about it. But I was unable to make a deal, and it would have been something I would have wanted to do. But that ship has sailed. Then, there’s the perennial talk of another Ghostbusters, but that’s all talk and speculation.

Heeb’s Brian Abrams talks to Rick Moranis about his new comedy album, the search for both "Spaceballs 2" and "Ghostbusters 3," and the raunchiness of airports.

Just over a week until RSS apocalypse... where are you moving? - Verge Forums

by Thomas Houston

Feedly mentioned 137 times, vast majority of them positive mentions
NewsBlur mentioned 24 times, several times in a negative light
The Old Reader mentioned 12 times, several times complaining that it's slow or "spazzy"

Verge staff opinions:

"NewsFire on my laptop."

"I’ve been completely sold by Feedly, even though it’s still missing some major features (apparently, search is pretty hard for any company not named Google). Feedly seems the be the furthest ahead when it comes to providing a backend sync API for other apps, so I get to use Press when I’m on an Android device and soon Reeder on iOS. Feedly’s own apps are pretty solid in their own rights, as well. ... Sadly, everything points to one main company dominating the RSS reader space once again — which was the exact problem that Google Reader had. Hopefully Feedly will remain invested in the service and it won’t suffer the same fate as Google’s product."

"First to add article search and not look like a butt gets my money."

Hard to believe it's almost July already. What's everyone planning on switching to and why?

Still plan to use Google Reader until it refuses to load, but feedly looks like the current replacement. Mobile app support is pretty good, the web client is fast and improving, and I'm a big fan of card view. Now if only they'd implement search...

blackpeopleconfessions:

This is 7-year-old Lamya Cammon. Her teacher took her in front of her Milwaukee public school class and cut off one of her braids as punishment because she kept playing with her hair. The teacher has received just a small fine and is still in the classroom.
