goodstuffhappenedtoday: This 1973 photo of five children...
This 1973 photo of five children playing in a Detroit suburb has gone viral on the Internet. The children were Rhonda Shelly, 3 (from left), Kathy Macool, 7, Lisa Shelly, 5, Chris Macool, 9, and Robert Shelly, 6.
Photo: Joe Crachiola/Courtesy of The Macomb Daily
In late July 1973, Joseph Crachiola was wandering the streets of Mount Clemens, Mich.„ a suburb of Detroit, with his camera. As a staff photographer for the Macomb Daily, he was expected to keep an eye out for good feature images — “those little slices of life that can stand on their own."
The slice of life he caught that day was a picture of five young friends in a rain-washed alley in downtown Mount Clemens. And what distinguishes it are its subjects: three black children, two white ones, giggling in each others’ arms.
"It was just one of those evenings," Crachiola remembers. “I saw these kids — they were just playing around. And I started shooting some pictures of them. At some point, they saw me and they all turned and looked at me and struck that pose that you see in the picture. It was totally spontaneous. I had nothing to do with the way they arranged themselves."
This week, Crachiola, who now lives in New Orleans, posted the vintage photo on his Facebook page.
"For me, it still stands as one of my most meaningful pictures," he wrote in his post. “It makes me wonder… At what point do we begin to mistrust one another? When do we begin to judge one another based on gender or race? I have always wondered what happened to these children. I wonder if they are still friends."
After several days when the world seemed to be reduced to one big argument about race, the elegantly simple photo hit a nerve — in a good way.
After his Sunday post, Crachiola’s Facebook page blew up — as many as 100,000 page views. Six thousand “likes" and thousands of shares. The Macomb Daily reprinted the photo on its Web page and sent someone to the archives to help identify the children, who are now middle-aged.
It’s hard not to smile while looking at this picture. Crachiola liked it so much himself that he printed a large copy and has it hanging in his dining room. Former Michigan Rep. Don Riegle reportedly also liked it so much, he got a framed copy and hung it in his office.
Crachiola says that learning of the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial reminded him of the photo and made him think to post it.
He’s been gratified by the response. Between Facebook and the newspaper, he has solid leads on where the children are today. “Someone emailed me saying he works with one of the guys who was in the picture," Crachiola says. “He actually works for the Macomb County Road Commission." And just before we spoke, Crachiola saw someone had posted an even more intriguing note: “This," wrote Darnesha Taylor Shelly, “is my husband and sister in laws."
Looks like a reunion might be imminent.
Linus Torvalds defends his right to shame Linux kernel developers
firehose'Sarah, first off, I don't have that many tools at hand. Secondly, I simply don't believe in being polite or politically correct. And you can point at all those cultural factors where some cultures are not happy with confrontation (and feel free to make it about gender too—I think that's almost entirely cultural too). And please bring up "cultural sensitivity" while at it. And I'll give you back that same "cultural sensitivity". Please be sensitive to _my_ culture too.
Google "management by perkele".
Do you really want to oppress a minority? Because Finns are a minority compared to almost any other country. If you want to talk cultural sensitivity, I'll join you. But my culture includes cursing.'
...
'Torvalds doesn't want a "code of conduct," saying that "venting of frustrations and anger is actually necessary, and trying to come up with some ‘code of conduct’ that says that people should be ‘respectful’ and ‘polite’ is just so much crap and bullshit.” '
lol tech culture is welcoming
Among other things, Sharp is "the author of the Linux USB 3.0 host controller driver," which is kind of fucking important to Linux.
Profanity and insults have long been management tactics of Linux creator Linus Torvalds. He once memorably gave the middle finger to Nvidia; separately, he announced that he would not change Linux "to deep-throat Microsoft." Torvalds has also shown no qualms about being rude to those who disagree with him.
When Torvalds is fighting for the open source way against proprietary software companies, his abrasive style may elicit cheers. But developers who volunteer to improve the Linux kernel and find themselves on the receiving end of a Torvalds tirade might prefer for a different management style. One developer is now calling out Linux's leader for turning the world of open source kernel development into a hostile working environment.
“Keep it professional”
The Linux "workplace" is primarily a mailing list in which developers discuss changes to the kernel. The criticism of Torvalds came yesterday from developer Sarah Sharp, a software engineer at Intel who has made numerous contributions to the Linux kernel in the past seven years. Sharp wrote:

How To Fast For Ramadan In The Arctic, Where The Sun Doesn't Set
firehosetl;dr: "since we have midnight sun during Ramadan this year, we've chosen to use the timetable for Mecca." This means that if the sun rises in Mecca at 5:00 am, residents of Tromsø will begin the fast at 5 a.m. (Norwegian time). In addition to being a good symbolic choice, adhering to Mecca's timetable, according to Moe, also provides a practical benefit: "they have very stable times for sunrise and sunset so that makes the prayers and the fasting quite balanced."

More of the world thinks China has already overtaken the US as the no. 1 economic power
The question of if and when China will take America’s place as world’s largest and most powerful economy has inspired a lot of debate. US intelligence analysts predict it will happen by 2030; according to OECD estimates, it could be as early as 2016. Going by Chinese estimates, the country’s economy might not surpass the US at any point this century.
As for the general public’s opinion, China has already overtaken the US as the world’s largest and most powerful economy, or will soon. Since the financial crisis, an increasing number of people around the world believe China has surpassed the US, according to a yearly survey (pdf) by the Pew Research Center.
This year’s poll of about 38,000 people found that in 23 of 39 countries surveyed, a plurality of respondents said they believed China would or had already replaced the US as the world’s no. 1 superpower. Looking at 20 countries polled in 2008 and then again this year, Pew found that the percentage of those who placed China in the top spot went up in all but one country (Mexico). The median percentage of people (the midpoint in the range of percentages in each of the 20 countries) who view China as top dog in these 20 countries rose to 34% this year, from 20% in 2008. Meanwhile, the median percentage that named the US fell to 41% from 47%.
In other words, when comparing 2013′s data with that of 2008, there were more countries in 2013 that had a higher percentage of people who put China in the top spot.
The poll also shows that in terms of image, the so-called US-China rivalry may be something of a zero sum game. Some of the regions where the US is most popular are where China is the least popular, and vice versa.
In Asia, the median percentage of those who viewed China well was 58%; compared to 64% who were positive about America. The clearest cases in that region are Japan, where only 5% viewed China favorably compared to 69% who had a positive image of the US, and Pakistan where 81% liked China but only 11% viewed the US in good light.
In the Middle East, only 21% viewed the US favorably compared to 45% who saw China in a good light. Perceptions of China were the lowest in Europe and Canada, where favorability for the US was high.
Here’s a list of all the countries surveyed this year, and where they stand on which country is the foremost global economic power.
Verizon Wireless keeps racking up subscribers
firehosesucks forever
The numbers: Solid. Revenues rose 4.3%. Verizon profits increased 23%. It added 941,000 contract wireless subscribers, the most profitable kind. That’s a 6% year-over-year increase. But investors didn’t seem too impressed; the stock is down.
The takeaway: Verizon wireless is growing like gangbusters. Unfortunately, the New York-based telecom giant doesn’t get all the profits. Verizon Wireless is a joint venture with Vodafone, which is entitled to 45% of the bottom line.
What’s interesting: Verizon has been trying to get Vodafone to part with its share of Verizon Wireless for years. Vodafone is understandably reluctant to let such an investment go, but Verizon may start playing rough. Its agreement with Vodafone says it has to pay up, but it doesn’t say when. Verizon is making noises (paywall) about opting instead to pay down debt rather than pay the large dividend, which would deprive Vodafone of a big chunk of its revenue and raise pressure on the company.

Microblogs are making it easier for whistleblowers to rout out state-level corruption
On July 17, a Chinese journalist blew the whistle on the chairman of one of China’s most powerful state-owned enterprises, China Resources, alleging that he had lost shareholders billions of dollars. The reporter, Wang Wenzhi, works for Economic Information Daily, which is owned by state-run Xinhua, so it’s no wonder he took to Sina Weibo to publish his views.
Wang’s Weibo post, which has since been deleted, was addressed to the Communist Party’s disciplinary organ, which monitors corruption. Because Song Lin, the chairman of CRP, runs the international investment arm (paywall) of the government’s State Council, he ranks at the same level as a vice-minister under Party hierarchy.
Chinese-language articles about the post were pulled. However, earlier today, six shareholders announced that they had already filed a lawsuit against China Resources Power (CRP), the unit of China Resources listed in Hong Kong, over similar accusations.
CRP shares plunged nearly 12% since July 16:
The shakeup follows another Weibo-inspired leak about government corruption: A Caijing reporter accused Liu Tienan, a former director of the National Energy Administration and deputy director of the government’s economic planning body, of corruption.
Weibo has attracted a growing number of whistleblowers in the past few years, mostly because it circumvents the editorial discretion of government-controlled media. Investigative pieces implicating government officials have long put editors in a tough position since they’re both journalists and Party propaganda arms. Remarks by the Economic Information Daily’s deputy editor-in-chief, Luo Guojun, highlighted this tension.
“It’s his civil right to blow the whistle on someone who he thinks has done something wrong, but you shouldn’t issue it on behalf of the paper,” Luo said, reports the South China Morning Post (paywall). ”How could he have done it before even letting us know? That’s not our organization’s spirit. Organization is important for the Communist Party, right?”
Of course, blasting out incriminating content on Weibo has its downsides. A popular whistleblower in southern China known for calling out local Party officials was just attacked by assailants who burned him with acid and hacked with knives.
Government crackdowns are also on the rise. The website and Sina Weibo account of another anti-corruption blogger, Zhu Ruifeng, were blocked yesterday, as Global Voices reports, noting that 107 similar blogs have been pulled recently, ostensibly to rein in anonymous blackmailing.
In this way, the government’s corruption crackdown has the unfortunate side effect of stymying transparency. And yet, more and more journalists seem willing to take the risk of piping up.

Officially licensed Firefly game coming 2014
firehose"slated to launch on iOS and Android-based smartphones" welp, glwt
Firefly Online, a social online role-playing game based cult TV series Firefly, is currently in development and is slated to launch on iOS and Android-based smartphones and tablets during the summer of 2014, Fox Digital Entertainment announced at San Diego Comic Con today.
Developed by QMXi and Spark Plug Games, players take on the role of a ship captain where they hire a crew and lead missions, while trading with other players. Firefly Online features customisable ships and pick-up and play cross-platform, cross-device functionality.
"At QMx, we know firsthand how great and powerful a franchise Firefly is and how mighty the Browncoats are," said Andy Gore, CEO of QMXi and Quantum Mechanix Inc. "It has always been our mission to bring the Verse to life for our customers in every way possible. The idea of creating an interactive experience where fans can have their own Firefly adventures -- well, that's just too shiny for words."
"We are thrilled to be partnering with QMx on Firefly Online," said Matt McMahon, VP of mobile for Fox Digital Entertainment. "QMx has a long and successful history with Firefly and we couldn't think of a better partner to make a truly innovative game that will stand up in the Verse and to its passionate fans."
Ubuntu 13.10 Can Outperform OS X 10.9 On Intel OpenGL
firehoseWhile I expect Mavericks to improve closer to release, I don't expect its Intel driver to move much, so this might actually stick. Even if it doesn't and Mavericks pulls a little ahead, it'd still be pretty damn impressive and makes Intel/Linux sound even better for games and media, not in a competitive fashion with OS X but in being able to tell devs, "If you use OpenGL for Mac, expect equal or better performance on Linux".

- Attempt to diagnose Dr Watson
- Explain why people get psychosomatic limps
- Suggest what John might really have suffered from (and its much more mundane than PTSD)
This is brilliantly reasoned. Period.

Judge denies Bradley Manning's motion to drop WikiLeaks charges
The judge in Bradley Manning's court-martial today upheld a set of charges against the Army private, including that of aiding the enemy, for providing information to WikiLeaks. Prosecutors argued that Manning's leaks indirectly aided information to the enemy, a fact he should have known given his training as an intelligence analyst. The defense countered that at the time of the leaks, WikiLeaks was generally viewed as a journalistic outlet dedicated to publishing secrets, and that Manning's training had never specifically dealt with the site. At the time, the defense argued, even the US Army didn't regard WikiLeaks as a threat.
Manning will face charges of aiding the enemy
Defense witness Yochai Benkler, a Harvard law professor, also testified that the legal notion of "indirectly aiding the enemy" would have a chilling effect on press freedom. The government had previously stated that, regardless of WikiLeaks' status as a journalistic organization, the charges should stand, and that even if the New York Times had published the leaks, Manning would still face prosecution.
On June 15, defense lawyers asked to have some charges dismissed, saying that the prosecution had offered only circumstantial evidence to support its case. Army Colonel Denise Lind today denied that motion, leaving Manning open to the "aiding the enemy" charge and six others. Having already pled guilty to some charges, he now faces the possibility of life in prison, plus 154 years, with the trial expected to conclude soon.

Android 4.3 detailed in new leak, but updates are minimal

OK THAT'S BETTER
Google is set to reveal the next version of Android at a press event next week, but we have already received a pretty good look at what the update will bring courtesy of a leaked copy obtained from a secondhand Nexus 4 sold by a Google employee. Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, as the name suggests, will be a minor update to the user experience introduced in 4.2. One of the most welcome changes comes to the dialer. With the update, the phone will automatically suggest phone numbers from your contacts as you dial either by matching the digits or using the T9 dial pad to look up names. It is worth noting that it's not on by default, however. The dialer now includes an option to add pauses when calling a number as well.
Android 4.3 also features the slightly updated camera application first introduced on the Google Play editions of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4, and there are a few helpful new settings. One setting, when enabled, lets apps turn on Wi-Fi just to get a lock on your location before turning it back off again — meaning apps will no pester you to turn on wireless to get your coordinates. The updated operating system also adds compatibility with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), which means you'll use less battery when connecting to wearable devices, for instance, and there's support for some new advanced visual effects in games and apps thanks to OpenGL for Embedded Systems 3.0. In all, it looks like there won't be much to see with 4.3, but AndroidCentral has published a helpful video walkthrough demonstrating some of these changes.

This is my dog, Lily. My sister and I bought her, without my dads permission and brought her home as a puppy about a year ago. My dad hates her, but me & my 2 sisters love her to death. This dog helps me cope with my depression and shes always great company to my sisters and I. My dad describes her as “tolerable." Today, after having this dog for over a year, my dad is saying she needs to go, while he is angry at us for bringing her home, she has become part of the family and we can’t get rid of her, it’s too painful. After begging my dad for a while, he was still stuck on getting rid of her. I mentioned tumblr as a final option, and surprisingly he agreed to it. If I can get 200,000 notes by the end of July, we can keep her. He thinks it’s impossible, but I have faith. I’ve seen tumblr do it before. Please guys help me, I love this dog more than myself. Netflix does not crop movies, except when it does
firehoseupdate
Netflix has moved quickly to distance itself from reports that it is ignoring the original aspect ratio of movies it streams to customers. In response to accusations made by Tumblr website 'What Netflix Does', which criticizes the company of cutting the sides of wider-screen movies in order to fit them into a squarer image, Netflix has categorically stated "we do not crop," adding that it attempts to offer "the best picture and provide the original aspect ratio of any title" on its service.
"We do not crop... unfortunately our quality controls sometimes fail."
The Tumblr website highlights a number of movies that have been cropped from their original aspect ratio, which include Planet of the Apes, Prometheus, and Passion of the Christ. If a movie was filmed for wider screens, it will display a black 'letterbox' panel on the top and bottom of the screen, ensuring that the movie can be viewed in the manner in which it was filmed. Older DVD movies used 'pan and scan' techniques to fill a viewer's screen, but cut out wider parts of the frame in order to do so.
Example: There Will Be Blood — original (left) and Netflix (right)
Netflix admits that while it attempts to offer movies in their original aspect ratio, it may sometimes deliver the wrong version of a title. "When we discover this error, we work to replace that title as soon as possible," the company notes. The author of the Tumblr website notes that he jumped between different Netflix regions to capture the stills, which could suggest the Netflix is supplied with different formats of a movie depending on where it signed its licensing deal.

Microsoft bundles 12 months of Xbox Live with Office 365 subscriptions
firehoseuhh
Microsoft is unveiling a new offer on Thursday designed to tempt consumers over to its subscription Office 365 service. Between July 18th and July 28th, customers who purchase a year-long Office 365 Home Premium subscription or a 4-year Office 365 University subscription will get 12 months of Xbox Live Gold at no extra cost.
The software maker introduced its Office 365 subscription, which includes access to apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, earlier this year. The service passed one million subscribers in May, with Microsoft noting that the Office 2013 software is the "best-selling" edition yet. It's a big bet by Microsoft to focus on paid subscriptions over the traditional method, but there's early signs of progress. Microsoft has been pushing Office 365 in a series of adverts aimed at passengers in railway stations and airports, alongside a magazine campaign that included a Wi-Fi hotspot.
After supplying an Office for iPhone app recently for Office 365 subscribers, the company has also been hitting at new apps in future. A transition to a touch version of Office is clearly underway, and Microsoft's former Office president, Kurt DelBene, revealed that the Office team is moving to more rapid updates for its subscription customers. Microsoft has also teased touch-based "Metro-style" Office apps for Windows 8.1.

PS4 will support PS3 wireless headsets
firehosebecause duh, there's no reason not to, it's a fucking headset
The upcoming PlayStation 4 console will support previous generation PlayStation 3 wireless headsets, Sony confirmed to Polygon.
It still remains unknown whether the new system will ship with its own PS4 headsets, however — comparatively, late last month Microsoft confirmed no Xbox One headset will be included in the base system of the console as the system will instead emphasize Kinect-driven voice inputs. Unlike PS4, previous-generation headsets will not be compatible with Xbox One controllers due to a new headset adapter port.
PlayStation 4 is slated to release this November for $399. Sony is debuting the console during this week's Comic-Con International: San Diego, giving attendees the opportunity to go hands-on with the next-gen system.
Conan O'Brien may play infamous 80s rape game on-air
firehosemaybe I was wrong about Conan playing up the creep factor to skewer gamer culture to its face :/
Custer's Revenge, the controversial Atari 2600 game that has players controlling a mostly-naked Gen. George Custer in his attempts to rape a native american woman tied to a pole, is one of eight possible games Conan O'Brien will play as part of a "Clueless Gamer" retro segment on his show, according to the show's official site.
The game is listed among seven other potential candidates in a poll to determine what to play during an on-air gaming session.
"Clueless Gamer is going RETRO: Conan and assistant nerd Aaron Bleyaert will be firing up an Atari 2600 and playing a bunch of classics from the Golden Age of gaming," according to the post. "Yesterday we asked for your Atari game suggestions via social media and were overwhelmed by the response. Below are the finalists; vote NOW for the game you want the maestro and his minion to play the most in this special throwback episode."
The eight finalists are Pong, Burger Time, Pitfall, Frogger, E.T., Dig Dug, Joust and the now infamous Custer's Revenge.
Original box art
Custer's Revenge was released in 1982 by now defunct publisher Mystique as "Swedish Erotica" and an "adult video game cartridge" during an era that pre-dates the ESRB's now prevalent gaming rating system by more than a decade. The publisher soon went out of business, and Playaround bought the rights, making several modifications, including to the game title, before re-releasing it.
In the game, players control a mostly-naked, visibly aroused 8-bit Custer who must navigate a screen filled with dropping arrows to get to a naked woman sporting a single-feather headdress, tied to a pole, to have sex with her.
The game spurred outrage among women's rights groups, Native American groups and parent groups before being pulled from shelves after selling about 80,000 copies.
Conan's Clueless Gamer segment has the affable O'Brien playing video games, often with developers, in a distinctly non-gamer fashion. We've reach out to O'Brien and the show to see if they were aware of the dubious nature of Custer's Revenge when they added it to the poll.
