TV: Newswire: Alec Baldwin might be getting his own talk show on MSNBC

by Sean O'Neal

Believing that what Alec Baldwin could use is another avenue through which to share his unscripted opinions with the world, MSNBC is reportedly close to hiring him to anchor a new late-night talk show. Though far from a done deal, Mediaite nevertheless quotes an anonymous, “senior” source who “insists it’s a done deal,” so what do we know? MSNBC SENIORS RULE! Anyway, details are obviously scarce, though we do know the show would run weekly, every Friday at 10 p.m. ET, and “will feature a large dose of Baldwin’s outspoken liberal politics”—which have thus far been solely represented on Baldwin’s appearances on Lawrence O’Donnell’s The Last Word, his podcast Here’s The Thing, his on-and-off-and-on-again Twitter account, and nearly every single time he’s interviewed or approached on the street. However, here they will be delivered with an equally large dose of handsomeness ...

Something is up with the 2013 Nexus 7’s GPS

by Andrew Cunningham
The GPS on the 2013 Nexus 7 appears to be having some issues.
Andrew Cunningham

It's not uncommon for new hardware to have issues early in its run, and it looks like the 2013 Nexus 7 will be no exception. PhoneArena has spotted reports from users complaining that the GPS in the new tablet becomes non-functional after a period of sustained use, and only rebooting the tablet will bring the GPS sensor back from the dead. I bought a 16GB version of the tablet earlier this week and was able to recreate the issue using the following steps:

  • With Wi-Fi based location tracking turned off in the settings, I opened Google Maps and hit the current location button. It successfully found my exact location in my apartment.
  • I left the tablet on for about ten minutes, and the GPS icon in the notification area began blinking. The full notification says, "searching for GPS." Some users have reported that the GPS will work for as long as 30 minutes and for as little as two minutes—if you're trying to recreate the issue yourself, there does appear to be some variance.
  • I walked around my apartment complex. The tablet's other sensors oriented the map in the right direction as I walked around, but the blue dot (which eventually turned gray) didn't follow me around.
  • Rebooting the tablet appears to reset the GPS, at least until I repeated the steps above. Toggling location services on and off did not appear to reset the GPS.

Google's Paul Wilcox has been active in that thread telling users that Google was "looking into" the problem and asking some follow-up questions—it's unclear as of this writing whether the issue will be fixable in software with an update or if it's indicative of a deeper hardware problem. We've reached out to Google for further comment on the issue and will update this post if we get a response.

Update: Google's official response is that they're aware of the issue but not ready to comment further at this point. We'll continue to follow the story as it develops.

Twins Prank Strangers by Pretending to Teleport While Getting Their Photo Taken

by Justin Page

For a PrankvsPrank video stunt, London-based twins and filmmakers Jack and Finn Harries of JacksGap fooled random strangers into taking a picture of Jack. Once Jack handed off the camera and the unsuspecting person was purposely sidetracked, Jack would hide behind a large sign while Finn popped up from a second story balcony.

Finn would call down to the person for them to continue taking the photo. It would confuse each person every time! Some thought it was impossible, some just didn’t understand, and some laughed their butts off!

French and Chinese lists are hilarious

The most controversial Wikipedia articles worldwide

WHEN disputes arise on Wikipedia, contributors are encouraged to go to a “talk page.” But often an “edit war” ensues: a change is repeatedly done by one person and undone by another—known as a “revert.” These reverts represent the most controversial articles. Taha Yasseri of the Oxford Internet Institute and colleagues looked at Wikipedia’s different language editions from their inception (January 2001 for English) to March 2010 and ranked the most contested articles, based on the number of reverts and the number of edits the contributors have made (dubbed their “maturity score”). The results in some ways confirm cultural stereotypes. Americans bicker over politics and professional wrestling; among the top French squabbles is Freud. When the Wikipedia community meets for Wikimania, an annual gathering held this year between August 7th and 11th in Hong Kong, they presumably will be nicer.

one of many weird things that happened while I was in LA

Russ went to bed early, setting “do not disturb” mode on his iPhone so no one could wake him up. His phone did wake him up, though, screeching and lighting up with an Amber Alert message about abducted children in a different part of the state. He asked Consumerist: how can he make these unwanted text messages stop?

this fucking console

The requirement covers recording and sharing of gameplay videos, making Skype video calls and using a service that finds gaming opponents. An Xbox Live Gold account that currently costs $60 (£40) will be needed for all these features. Sony PlayStation 4 owners will also have to pay for some online services. However, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment confirmed, via a post on Twitter, that its machine would not restrict games recording and streaming features to paid subscribers.

the weird thing that happened in LA followed me

A reported sighting in northeast California of murder suspect James DiMaggio, who is believed to have abducted a dead woman's teenage girl, has triggered statewide alerts in Oregon and Washington state. The focus on the Northwest intensified after Oregon state police reported a possible sighting of DiMaggo's car Wednesday near Alturas, in northeast Oregon, and later about 50 miles along the same highway near Lakeview, in south-central Oregon.

Company Accuses LinkedIn of 'Extreme Sexism' After It Pulled an Ad Featuring a Beautiful Argentinian Engineer - Yahoo! Finance

"members of the tech community (LinkedIn users) saw it as impossible that our female engineers could actually be engineers, and a leader of the tech community (LinkedIn) agreed with them. Unfortunately we’re banned from showing anything except 100%, all male software advertisements from now on"

Toptal was told that if it planned to continue advertising on the site, it would have to kick the image of dark-haired, Argentinian web developer Florencia Antara to the curb in place of what LinkedIn described in an email as, "different images, related to the product." In a blog post titled "In Defense of Female Engineers," CEO Taso Du Val made his disgust clear: The fact of the matter is: members of the tech community (LinkedIn users) saw it as impossible that our female engineers could actually be engineers, and a leader of the tech community (LinkedIn) agreed with them. Unfortunately we’re banned from showing anything except 100%, all male software advertisements from now on and so, that’s what you’ll be getting. I’m disappointed both on a personal and professional level. I expect better.

Where Obamacare Premiums Will Soar - Yahoo! Finance

by gguillotte
firehose

tl;dr: Obamacare will drop rates in places where reform has already taken place and raise rates in places where reform is desperately needed

"New York, for example, already required that insurers provide comprehensive coverage to all who apply. Rates there could fall by half since the pool will expand to include many younger, healthier residents under Obamacare. But New York is more the exception than the rule, experts said."

In Florida, for instance, officials constructed a hypothetical silver-level plan based on the offerings available today. Then they looked at how the cost of that plan compares to the average silver plan that will be available on the exchange. Florida found premiums will rise between 7.6% and 58.8%, depending on the insurer. The average increase would be 35%. The main driver of the premium increases is the Obamacare mandate that coverage be offered to everyone, said Kevin McCarty, Florida's insurance commissioner. There are just short of a million enrollees in the individual market in Florida, while 3.8 million are uninsured. The state does not allow new entrants into a "high-risk pool," which provides coverage to the sick. "People who are in their 50s with high blood pressure have no coverage options," he said. So why aren't there such big premium increases in other states? New York, for example, already required that insurers provide comprehensive coverage to all who apply. Rates there could fall by half since the pool will expand to include many younger, healthier residents under Obamacare. But New York is more the exception than the rule, experts said.

Inside the secret world of teen cartel hit men - CNN.com

by gguillotte

longread

On a dusty, remote ranch across the Rio Grande from this Texas border town, an intimidating drug lord stood over 13-year-old Rosalio Reta and handed him a gun. Reta didn't know who the man was, but it was clear he instilled fear and commanded respect among everyone standing around watching the dramatic scene unfold. The American teen had never before met anyone who carried a pistol adorned with such an unforgettable decoration: the number "40" encrusted in diamonds on the handle. The cartel leader looked at Reta and ordered him to shoot and kill a man tied up on the ground. If he refused to murder the stranger, Reta recalls, the drug lord would have killed him. Rosalio Reta's career as a teen drug cartel assassin had begun. "I knew that my life had just changed forever," Reta told CNN this week, 11 years later. "That's a day that I'm never going to be able to forget. After that, I didn't have no life."
