Shelter, the badger survival sim launching on Steam next week

By Jenna Pitcher on Aug 20, 2013 at 5:18a
Nature survival sim called Shelter is set to release on Aug. 28 on Steam for Windows PC and is available to pre-order now at 10 percent off, Pid developer Might is Delight announced on its official Facebook page.
Revealed in April, the third-person adventure game requires players to look for shelter and hunt food as the mother of a litter of badger cubs. Players must protect their brood from wilderness dangers, such as birds of prey and brush fires.
Shelter collected enough community votes and past Valve's Steam Greenlight late last month along with 15 other games, including Iron Galaxy Studios' fighting game, Divekick; Plastic Piranha's first-person shooter, Rekoil; Swery65's Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut; and, Free Lives Games' Broforce.

Victor Hugo’s theory for why the rich resent the poor
This accounts for the great mystery at the heart of American politics — the backwards flow of resentment. In America, the wealthy resent the poor, the powerful resent the powerless, the well-fed resent the hungry, leaders of the dominant religion resent religious minorities, privileged whites resent people of color, privileged men resent women.
This is an enigma. It seems impossible. The poor do not deprive the rich, so how is it even possible for the rich to resent them? We can understand how the downtrodden might resent those who have beaten them down, but what possible reason could there be for those at the top to resent those they grind beneath them? There is no rational basis for this resentment — no way of explaining it.
Hugo offers a theory: The fear of suffering can fester into an aversion for all who suffer. Those who suffer are a reminder of the thing we fear. And so we come to resent those who suffer, and therefore we seek to punish them.

Microsoft starts 'Independent Developers @ Xbox' self-publishing program

"We wanted to recognize that this program is just starting out," said Chris Charla, who heads up the ID@Xbox program and its support team. "We're really looking for qualified developers, especially in the early stages." Though there is no generic checklist for what is a "prioritized" application, Charla says Microsoft is looking for established indies that can provide good feedback to help the program improve in the future.
Once accepted into the program, ID@Xbox participants will receive two Xbox One development kits at no cost, along with full access to Achievements, the Xbox Live toolset, cloud services, Kinect and SmartGlass for use in their games. "We have a pretty quick turnaround to letting people into the program, and signing their hardware agreements and that sort of thing," Charla said. However, "if we get 1000 entries on Tuesday, it's going to take a couple days longer than if we get 200." Charla would not disclose the general details of the resulting contracts, only saying that "every contract is probably a little different."

Emojify transcends ASCII art, turns your photos into emoji mosaics
Emoji; they've conquered the world, featured in novels, and more recently they've allowed us to track Twitter's mood in real time. Now, a new app for iPhone automatically generates another internet staple, ASCII art, using only emoji. Emojify lets you take photos with your phone's camera, or pull existing images from your camera roll, and replaces the pixels with emoji. Once you've selected your photo, you'll be able to control image size (ranging up to 16-megapixel files for poster-sized prints) and contrast before exporting or sharing your creation.
The quality of Emojify's output really depends on your source material. For best results, you'll want a strong subject with a plain, light background. The developers have crafted a number of examples of what's possible with the app, as seen on Designboom, drawing from famous artworks like Da Vinci's Mona Lisa and Alberto Korda's iconic Che Guevera photo. Emojify is iPhone only for now, and it's available from the App Store for $0.99. Here's what we managed to achieve with our first attempt:

Mike Tyson defeats Glass Joe in Punch-Out!!

By Jenna Pitcher on Aug 20, 2013 at 2:30a
Retired professional boxer Mike Tyson has beaten Glass Joe from Nintendo's classic boxing arcade game Punch-Out!!, according to his Twitter account.
Playing the game in a Fox Sports green room, Tyson tweeted that he beat Glass Joe for the first time. Last month, Tyson revealed in an interview with TMZ that he couldn't beat the video game character — the first opponent players go up against and the weakest character in the title — when asked if he has ever beaten a game.
At the time, Tyson said that he was "a late bloomer" when it came to playing games, saying he started playing the medium around 2006 or 2007. He is a fan of "Tour of Duty" and games featuring zombies.

Tamriel, Man: Skywind Squeezes Morrowind Into Skyrim
By Craig Pearson on August 20th, 2013 at 8:00 am.

If someone is keeping a Big List Of Inevitable Things somewhere, they can cross out ‘modders remaking Morrowind in the Skyrim engine’. For it is no longer inevitable, but is in fact, er, evitable? No, that’s not right. Though I guess you could avoid it, but that would make the modders of Skywind very sad indeed, because all their hard work in rebuilding Morrowind is worth looking at. Even if you just coo over the videos below, because cooing over the scenery is pretty much all that’s possible right now.
They’ve built most of the world, but the tricky part of adding NPCs, quests, and skills has yet to come. So if you do manage to skip through the several steps required to download and install the thing, including owning the original Morrowind and its expansions, when you decide to leave Skyrim and visit Morrowind you’ll just hanging about awkwardly. Questless. At least you won’t upset anyone if you run around naked in this empty land of nothing. In fact, feel free to download one of those mods where you add a mighty wang to your character and let it flap about. There’s no-one there to judge you.
Check it, yo.

This Is the Cover of Prince's New Single
It's all over the internet already, but this really is the best thing ever. Here is the actual, for-real cover of Prince's new single. Yes, that's Dave Chappelle.
That would be plenty, but take a listen to a preview of the song after the jump. It's ridiculously swanky, funky as hell, and actually pretty good.

"We've decided to spend more time on Berlin to create an experience closer to the size of [The Seattle Campaign] Dead Man's Switch," developer Harebrained Schemes mentioned in a Kickstarter update. "We know that we want our next story to feel more like the player is part of a shadowrunning crew and contain more corporate intrigue."
Although not finalized, some of the Berlin pre-production additions announced include: more flexible main story arc, new weapons and enemies (more magic creatures), "Improved Physical Adept gameplay" and the different feel of Shadowrun: Germany. Developer Harebrained Schemes still plans to integrate all Berlin content into the Shadowrun Returns Editor.

Coming Distractions: Trailer: Girls
firehose"After two seasons of occasionally feeling like one long Instagram feed, this promo for Girls’ third year reaches a natural conclusion: It’s just a 30-second montage of meticulously filtered faux-Polaroids shots of the cast and crew ... Unfortunately, no photos of overpriced tapas or craft cocktails"

After two seasons of occasionally feeling like one long Instagram feed, this promo for Girls’ third year reaches a natural conclusion: It’s just a 30-second montage of meticulously filtered faux-Polaroids shots of the cast and crew, soundtracked by another spiky pop song full of shouty female vocals (in this case, Robert ToTeras’ “Break Out The Boom Boom”). Unfortunately, no photos of overpriced tapas or craft cocktails—nor are there any plot details, beyond those we completely make up, right now.
So, based on the fact that they’re all seen here frolicking at the beach, we can only assume the third season will find the gang meeting an underwater race of Merpeople. Then Marnie starts dating one and becomes all about her new Merpeople friends, and it causes tension. “You act like you’re the first person to ever have sex with a man-fish!” Hannah will say to her ...

firehoseare you fucking kidding

Changing your IP address or using proxy servers to access public websites you've been forbidden to visit is a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), a judge ruled Friday in a case involving Craigslist and 3taps.
The legal issue is similar to one in the Aaron Swartz case, in which there was debate over whether Swartz "had committed an unauthorized access under the CFAA when he changed his IP address to circumvent IP address blocking imposed by system administrators trying to keep Swartz off the network," law professor Orin Kerr wrote yesterday on the Volokh Conspiracy blog.
The ruling in Craigslist v. 3taps (PDF) is the first "directly addressing the issue," Kerr wrote. 3taps drew Craigslist's ire by aggregating and republishing its ads, so Craigslist sent a cease-and-desist letter telling the company not to do that. Craigslist also blocked IP addresses associated with 3taps' systems.

"Phoenix Returns" by Nina ‘Space Coyote’ Matsumoto ⊟
This is one of several dozen pieces that will appear at Fangamer X Attract Mode, the amazing art show returning to Seattle’s 1927 Events during PAX at the end of the month.
How have we not already promoted this event to death? It’s run by two super friends (really, it’s a shame to see they’re at odds for this show), and the list of participating artists is nuts. The show will also feature some indie games (17-BIT’s GALAK-Z and Capy’s Synchroma), music (Danimal Cannon and, OMG, Virt), and more.
Cover is just $10 — be there on August 31, from 7PM to midnight. Prints will be available for sale at the show, and likely online afterward.

Integrated Skype calling now available for all Outlook.com users in North America and UK
firehoseeverything is always watching beat
After testing the waters with a preview back in April, Microsoft is today rolling out Skype video calling and messaging to all Outlook.com users across the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, and France. Your Skype contacts should now appear grouped within Outlook's contact list, though you'll need to install a plugin before you can chat face-to-face via video calling. And don't fret if you've somehow never signed up for Skype until now; your Microsoft account works just like a Skype ID for messaging and video chat. Supported browsers include Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox. To take advantage of the new feature, start a message conversation as you normally would, and then click on the video or audio icon to start up a Skype session. Microsoft is promising users in other regions that it's "working hard" towards achieving a worldwide release.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified review: plausible denial
firehoseas foreseen by prophecy: "Some level of strategy or deeper connection to the world of XCOM is tantalizingly close, but it’s all just a facade."

The concept behind The Bureau: XCOM Declassified is great.
We see the monolithic cross-government, anti-alien organization at its inception, stripped down to its core. With the first alien threat to our world striking without warning, we’re almost instantly on the ropes, relying on sheer wits, bravery and slapdash ingenuity to save us.
But that’s also how the game developer 2K Marin has built around this great concept feels — slapdash. It’s a decent tactical action base with material grafted on to it so incongruous it might as well be from another world.
You are Agent Carter, a lapsed CIA operative who unwittingly becomes XCOM's newest agent when the proverbial shit hits the fan. He is gruff to a comedic degree, with a singular tone of delivery reminiscent of broken glass being ground into hot cement.
We have a front row seat as 1962 America burns, and seeing such an idyllic period torn asunder adds an excellent bit of creepiness to the proceedings. From the faint film grain to the oldies piped from dying radios, The Bureau’s setting is beautifully realized and lends a lot of much-needed character.
Not content to watch Kennedy’s America turned to rubble, Carter hops across the nation trying to put out what fires he can with two backup agents. He’s formidable on his own, with an ever-expanding arsenal and slate of appropriated alien powers like telepathically lifting enemies or healing his squad. But Carter is also able to slow time and issue orders to his team, each with class dependant abilities like turret deployment or cloaking. Think "1960s Mass Effect" and you’ve got the gist.

When your team of three is thrown against a seemingly insurmountable squad of these invaders, The Bureau really shines. Having one agent deploy a holographic decoy to hold a group of enemies in place while another calls down an artillery strike on them is immensely satisfying and there are a nigh-infinite number of equally fun combinations.
Since all actions are able to be queued, I especially enjoyed calling in every bit of my arsenal simultaneously, watching a force of enemies be leveled by a drone, followed by a laser turret, followed by a mine, followed by … well, you get the idea.
"The attempts to make The Bureau share DNA with the XCOM franchise are all unsuccessful in varying degrees."Action is what works about The Bureau. What's holding it back is right there in the title. The attempts to make The Bureau share DNA with the XCOM franchise are all unsuccessful in varying degrees.

Agents in the field can permanently die, an XCOM staple that has always provided the franchise with a lot of tension and drama. Only The Bureau is built around a central character whose death means failure, so the game by its nature has to feature frequent checkpoints at every difficulty level.
This eliminates the sense of risk that permadeath can provide. It’s just one example of dissonance between the third-person action and tactical strategy The Bureau attempts to blend.
You can recruit other agents (though no women, by the by), and if you’re not using them in a given mission they can be sent out on automated assignments that offer rewards in the form of new gear and, of course, experience. Since these missions never fail though, I ended the game with a roster of 10 snipers, engineers and commandos (the same 10 I began with) all advanced to their maximum level.
Not that I ever needed them. I only swapped one out occasionally when I wanted to experiment with some different skill sets.
None of it makes a lick of sense. No drama is added by these systems, no sense of urgency when I was forced by circumstance to put an untested agent into the field. It’s all just bloat, and poorly executed bloat at that. Research and development, another XCOM hallmark, is equally mishandled.
Taking enemy weaponry is as simple as picking it up off the ground
There’s a lot of bluster in The Bureau from the leadership about "taking enemy weaponry and making it our own." As it turns out, the complex technological feat being alluded to is "picking it up off the ground." That’s it. That’s how new weapons are appropriated by the XCOM team. You frequently visit the XCOM base and are free to wander its imposing and period appropriate labs, engineering department and armory. But wandering is all you’ll be doing. Some level of strategy or deeper connection to the world of XCOM is tantalizingly close, but it’s all just a facade.
As opposed to the recruiting system, which is fleshed out but pointless, weapon research and development is utterly unexplored and could have dovetailed so nicely with the parts of the game that are working really well.

Wrap Up:
The Bureau is full of possibility, but it's far from memorable
The underutilized XCOM base is an appropriate metaphor for The Bureau itself. Limitless possibilities for intrigue, tactics, mystery and terror appear to be on offer. But The Bureau keeps most of it to itself, leaving only scraps and the grunt work of killing aliens. That may be an amusing way to kill 10 hours or so, but it’s a long way from a memorable one.
The Bureau was reviewed using a pre-release Steam key and account provided by 2K Games. You can find additional information about Polygon's ethics policy here.
