Your sweet tooth is displacing impoverished Brazilians, Cambodians and Africans

by Gwynn Guilford
A worker carries sugarcane during harvest time at the Montelimar sugar mill on the outskirts of Managua December 30, 2012. Nicaragua plans to produce some 1.5 million short tons of sugar and expects to make about 180 million dollars from exporting sugar during the 2012-2013 cycle, according to the National Committee of Sugar Producers (CNPA). Picture taken December 30, 2012. REUTERS/Oswaldo Rivas

By 2020, the world will consume 25% more sugar than it does now. Where will it come from? At the moment, the biggest exporters of sugar are Brazil, Thailand, Australia and Guatemala. But that’s changing. Sugar cane uses more land than almost any other major agricultural commodity, which is fueling demand for more land. Of the 31 million hectares—about the size of Italy—currently used to produce sugar, around 15% (pdf, p.4) involves land purchased in 100 major deals inked since 2000, says Oxfam, a non-governmental organization. Often, these land sales are to foreign investors:

With land growing scarcer in big sugar-producing countries, agricultural companies are increasingly looking to poor countries with a lot of land and flimsy property laws, notes Oxfam’s Chris Jochnick. ”As pressure on the land is growing, inevitably you’re going to have more competition for the land and more land grabs,” he says, referring to large-scale land sales that ignore the claims of its residents and take place without their consultation, violate human rights, or occur without assessment of their environmental impact.

Villagers living on desirable sugar plantation land often face forced eviction and loss of their primary food source, either because they lose their farmland or the plantation diverts or pollutes water they depend on for their livelihood.

This is a growing problem in Brazil, where sugarcane is valued not only for its use as a sweetener, but also as ethanol, one of Brazil’s major fuel sources. The chart below compares the increase in Brazilian provinces’ sugarcane cultivation with the number of land disputes in 2012. It also looks at the incidence of those land conflicts affecting indigenous populations (who are more likely to lack land titles):

 Oxfam

A similar trend is afflicting Cambodia, where sugarcane production now occupies twice the amount of land it did a decade ago. As the New York Times reports, the Khmer Rouge, Maoists who ruled Cambodia from 1975-9, destroyed almost all of Cambodia’s land titles. That means long-time residents can seldom prove that they own their land. Oxfam recounts how two companies majority-owned by Thai sugar giant Khon Kaen Sugar Co Ltd, which reportedly supplies London-based Tate & Lyle Sugars, is said to have launched a sugar plantation in 2006 that displaced 500 families in three villages from land they used for subsistence farming. At least 200 families say they were never consulted.

But things are particularly bad in Africa, says Oxfam’s Jochnick. ”Africa’s really the front line of land investment because so much land out there that hasn’t been titled,” he says, noting that more than half of the large-scale land deals since 2000 have taken place there. “It’s easier to deal with some of those governments because [their lack of] oversight [over] land tenure.” Here’s a look at how land sales to foreign owners have trended:

Take Sierra Leone, for instance, and a sugarcane project run by Swiss energy company Addax & Oryx Group. In 2009, Addax leased 44,000 hectares for 50 years for a project that will supply ethanol to Europe, funded by European Development Finance Institutions and the African Development Bank (the fact that it leased the land explains why it’s not on the map above). Research by the Oakland Institute, an NGO focused on land rights, found that villagers who were affected were largely unaware of project (pdf).

That probably explains why their rent is absurdly cheap; landowners receive $7.90 per hectare per year, compared with, for example, a cost of land of $570 per hectare (pdf, p.7) at a sugarcane plantation in Louisiana, in the southern US. One NGO found that Addax plans to bring in $53 million in annual revenue, meaning the company will pay just 0.7% of that $53 million (pdf, p.21) in rent each year to landowners, according to a report by a UK-based NGO. That’s a problem because the project occupies land on which villagers once raised cassava, rice and vegetables. While some villagers now have jobs at the plantation, many more now have no way of feeding themselves.

Sometimes the country’s own government is exploiting land claims. One of the most egregious examples involves Ethiopia’s ambition to become a major world sugar producer by 2025. It launched a 245,000 hectare state-run sugar plantation in the Omo river valley, a project that has so far entailed the involuntary resettlement (pdf, p.37) of tens of thousands of villagers, says Human Rights Watch, an NGO. Most of them are pastoral herders who need the land to raise their livestock. On top of that, the dam built to irrigate the state-run Ethiopian Sugar Corporation’s plantations has already stopped the annual flood that 170,000 farmers depend upon (pdf, p.5) for cultivation, says the Oakland Institute.

Of course, it’s easy for NGO researchers from the already industrialized West to glorify the “traditional” way of life. Critics of the Omo sugarcane project, said an Ethiopian government spokesperson, want to “drag Ethiopia back to the Stone Age.”

But there are more profitable ways to use agricultural land. ”Despite considerable investment by government, [raising animals] is consistently more profitable than either cotton or sugarcane farming while avoiding many of the environmental costs associated with large-scale irrigation projects,” wrote economists Roy Behnke and Carol Kerven in a recent report (pdf, p.7).

Governments of poor countries are probably flocking to sugar because it attracts foreign investment, especially from countries like India and China, which, along with the EU, are the world’s biggest sugar-guzzlers. Those countries are also less likely to shy away from projects that harm workers or the environment. Take for instance the dam planned for Ethiopia’s Omo sugar plantation projects. After failing to gain funding from the African Development Bank and the European Investment Bank, the government finally won a $500 million loan from China’s state-owned Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and a separate $500 million loan from China Development Bank. India’s development bank, meanwhile, loaned $640 million to the Ethiopian government’s sugar industry.

In an earlier chapter of sugar’s history, the hunt for slave labor drove the production of cheap sweets, taking sugar producers to Caribbean and South America. Today, the sugar industry’s profits are driven by cheap land, and the capital funding those investments.

'Completely oblivious' cellphone users didn't see a gunman in their midst

by Adi Robertson

Passengers on San Francisco's Muni train were so focused on their smartphones that they didn't notice a man drawing and pointing his gun until he shot university student Justin Valdez, District Attorney George Gascón says. As SFGate reports, security footage from September 23rd captured "dozens" of passengers apparently ignoring a man who drew a .45-caliber pistol several times, pointed it across the aisle, and eventually shot Valdez as he stepped off the train. "These weren't concealed movements — the gun is very clear," Gascón told SFGate. "These people are in very close proximity with him, and nobody sees this. They're just so engrossed, texting and reading and whatnot. They're completely oblivious of their surroundings."

The shooter was allegedly Nikhom Thephakaysone, who has since been arrested. But Gascón said that although cellphones help people document and report crimes, they created a kind of bystander apathy in this case. It's not clear how full the train was, although dozens of people would add up to a crowded car. Multiple reports have cited "distracted walking" — while using a smartphone or other device — as a cause of increased accidents, just as cell use while driving has been deemed a potentially fatal risk. On subways, though, other factors could also make people less likely to spot warning signs. Phones aren't inherently more distracting than books or newspapers, and looking too closely at passengers on a crowded train is often considered taboo — in this case, it's also not clear how much it would have helped. As the video hasn't been released, we're left only with Gascón's warning that a busy screen can add up to a deadly distraction.

Amazon Press Event

A new ruling today clears the path for Amazon's planned $600 million cloud storage contract with the CIA. Experts say the cloud storage will be used for the agency's least sensitive and most commonly accessed information, with a higher tier of security protecting more classified data. Amazon had been named for the contract earlier this year, but a series of lawsuits with IBM threatened to reopen bidding. Today's ruling from the US Court of Federal Claims heads off that process, securing Amazon's claim, although an IBM spokesperson says the company plans to appeal the ruling.

It's one of Amazon's highest profile contracts since they opened up a dedicated government sales division several years ago, and has required hiring over 100 IT professionals with top secret security clearances. A 2011 report found dozens of government offices relying on Amazon-powered cloud services, including the Treasury and State departments.

Oxford University Press opens up scholarly articles during government shutdown

by Jacob Kastrenakes

Researchers looking for information in the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institute, or the National Archives have been out of luck since last week when the US government shut down amid a lapse in funding, but now Oxford University Press is hoping that it can offer them a valuable alternative. Through the end of next week, the press is offering free access to three of its online resources: Oxford Reference (which includes a collection of the press' core academic books), American National Biography Online (which includes biographical details on over 18,700 famous names from US history), and Social Explorer (which includes access to past and present census data).

Access to all three sites can be gained by using public usernames and passwords that Oxford University Press has published on its Tumblr. Of course, the offer may not be purely altruistic: the access only runs for two weeks total, at which point it once again requires a subscription — and individual subscriptions to individual sites aren't cheap. Social Explorer runs $495 each year for a single person, though others are less expensive, like the American National Biography Online, which only costs $89 annually. Most researchers would use group subscriptions obtained through their universities, however, and there's a good chance that they already have one.

Chris Brown: 'It was the biggest wake-up call' | Music | The Guardian

TW: child sex

He lost his virginity when he was eight years old, to a local girl who was 14 or 15. Seriously? "Yeah, really. Uh-huh." He grins and chuckles. "It's different in the country." Brown grew up with a great gang of boy cousins, and they watched so much porn that he was raring to go. "By that point, we were already kind of like hot to trot, you know what I'm saying? Like, girls, we weren't afraid to talk to them; I wasn't afraid. So, at eight, being able to do it, it kind of preps you for the long run, so you can be a beast at it. You can be the best at it." (Now 24, he doesn't want to say how many women he's slept with: "But you know how Prince had a lot of girls back in the day? Prince was, like, the guy. I'm just that, today. But most women won't have any complaints if they've been with me. They can't really complain. It's all good.")

No FiOS In Boston? We'll Make an Ad Anyway

all carriers suck forever

Zott writes "The Boston Globe has a front-page story about Verizon's FiOS that recounts what many of us here in Boston and some surrounding urban areas know already: Verizon won't invest in the physical plant and actually offer the fiber optic Internet and TV service here in the 'hub of the universe.' This hasn't stopped Verizon from launching a new advertising campaign with Donnie Wahlberg (member of New Kids on the Block, actor, and well-known Boston native) standing in Copley Square and the Charlestown neighborhood touting the product. It goes even further, though — according to the Globe's article, '"This is New England, where people tell it straight," says Wahlberg... "No phonies, no fakers, no shortcuts."' Except for the shortcut in the fine print that's presumably in the ad somewhere: 'FiOS not available in all areas.'"

There's a Major Foodborne Illness Outbreak and the Government's Shut Down - Wired Science

by djempirical

image: BokChoi-Snowpea (CC), Flickr

Late-breaking news, and I’ll update as I find out more: While the government is shut down, with food-safety personnel and disease detectives sent home and forbidden to work, a major foodborne-illness outbreak has begun. This evening, the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the US Department of Agriculture announced that “an estimated 278 illnesses … reported in 18 states” have been caused by chicken contaminated with Salmonella Heidelberg and possibly produced by the firm Foster Farms.

“FSIS is unable to link the illnesses to a specific product and a specific production period,” the agency said in an emailed alert. “The outbreak is continuing.”

This is the exact situation that CDC and other about-to-be-furloughed federal personnel warned about last week. As a reminder, a CDC staffer told me at the time:

I know that we will not be conducting multi-state outbreak investigations.  States may continue to find outbreaks, but we won’t be doing the cross-state consultation and laboratory work to link outbreaks that might cross state borders.

That means that the lab work and molecular detection that can link far-apart cases and define the size and seriousness of outbreaks are not happening. At the CDC, which operates the national foodborne-detection services FoodNet and PulseNet, scientists couldn’t work on this if they wanted to; they have been locked out of their offices, lab and emails. (At a conference I attended last week, 10 percent of the speakers did not show up because they were CDC personnel and risked being fired if they traveled even voluntarily.)

In case it seems like this is not a big deal (just 300 illnesses, just some raw chicken): foodborne illness can have lifelong consequences that range from arthritis to kidney trouble to heart disease. And: The number of illnesses that can be identified in any foodborne outbreak are almost always an under-estimate.

In its statement, FSIS said:

Raw products from the facilities in question bear one of the establishment numbers inside a USDA mark of inspection or elsewhere on the package:

  • “P6137”
  • “P6137A”
  • “P7632”

The products were mainly distributed to retail outlets in California, Oregon and Washington State.

It is the second time this year that the firm at the center of this alert, Foster Farms, has been linked to a nationwide Salmonella outbreak. In July, according to the CDC, 134 people in 13 states were made ill by chicken linked to two Foster Farms slaughterhouses.

More to come on this, I am sure.

Jane Jensen remaking Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers in 2014

by Samit Sarkar
firehose

hurm

Game designer Jane Jensen is remaking Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers with a 20th Anniversary Edition scheduled for release in 2014 on Windows PC, Mac and iPad, she announced today on Twitter.

The classic point-and-click adventure game, which Jensen originally developed at Sierra OnLine, was released in December 1993 on Windows, Mac and MS-DOS. She and her indie studio, Pinkerton Road, are partnering with Activision — which, as the former parent company of the now-defunct Sierra, owns the Gabriel Knight rights — for the 20th Anniversary Edition.

"My indie studio, Pinkerton Road, is licensing the game from Activision and developing it ourselves. We're not crowdfunding the project," said Jensen in an interview with Side Mission. The Sins of the Fathers remake will feature updated art and high-definition graphics but will remain a 2D adventure game, although Pinkerton Road is tweaking the gameplay for the iPad version.

"We really felt Sins of the Fathers needed to stay true to the original story and gameplay, both for reasons of nostalgia but also because it worked," said Jensen. "We are adding in a few new things here and there, but I wanted the original to be fully represented."

Jensen hopes the remake will "relaunch and rejuvenate the series"

Unfortunately, the game's voice acting, which featured Hollywood actors such as Tim Curry, won't appear in the remake — Jensen told Side Mission that the original audio files aren't available, and they were "pretty compressed" anyway. In addition, it would have been too expensive to re-hire the actors 20 years later. But Pinkerton Road is including a re-recorded version of Sins of the Fathers' original score in the remake.

Jensen added that Pinkerton Road's existing agreement with Activision is only for the first Gabriel Knight game, but said she hopes the 20th Anniversary Edition will be successful enough to convince the publisher to "relaunch and rejuvenate the series" and "persuade Activision to allow us to do a new [Gabriel Knight] game."

You can see the first image of the 20th Anniversary Edition of Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers below.

This Turkish hotel won a “hospitality innovation award” for protecting protestors from tear gas and police

by Simone Foxman
divan hotel istanbul protests

International hospitality awards usually go to hotels with the most creative design, impeccable service and attention to amenities like ultra-plush bathrobes. But the winner of the latest “hospitality innovation award” from PKF hotelexperts was selected on entirely different criteria.

The German hotel consultants awarded the honor to Divan Hotels’ flagship property in Istanbul in recognition for its offering refuge to protesters fleeing police tear gas.

The hotel is adjacent to Gezi Park’s Taksim Square, the site of protests last May and June. During some of the most tense moments, the Divan Hotel’s management took in people protesting against the government of Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, to the chagrin of officials.

Adding insult to injury, the hotel staff rebuffed police forces by asking whether they had a reservation at the hotel, according to Han Le, an American who observed the protests. Unsurprisingly, the police did not, and the staff—at least temporarily—prevented them from entering and arresting protesters camping out inside. The Financial Times reports (paywall) that the decision to take in protesters was initially made by the hotel’s management, but supported by the hotel’s parent company.

The chain of 11 Divan Hotels is owned by Koç Holding, a conglomerate owned by the wealthy Koç family, which says it generates 9% of Turkey’s GDP. The hotel’s parent company’s holdings also include Turkey’s only refinery and some joint ventures with Ford and Fiat.

The government has singled out Koç Holding, engaging in a “witch hunt” to pass off blame for the country’s struggling economy, according to an anonymous investment banker cited in Der Spiegel.  In June, Erdoğan accused the hotel of “harbor[ing] criminals.” Then, in July, tax investigators raided 77 offices of  Koç Holding’s energy subsidiaries.  The company was later named in a lawsuit alleging that it was part of a 1997 coup. In late September, it lost a government contract to build six warships.

While the Koç family may the government’s scapegoat du jour, the tensions between the company and the government are characteristic of the animosity between Turkey’s old capitalist elite and the Erdoğan administration. Erdoğan has also taken aim at the financial services industry, accusing the “interest rate lobby” of fanning unrest in order to speculate on the economy.

Unsurprisingly, German businessmen don’t share Erdoğan’s feelings. “Divan Hotels and Koç Family has showed solidarity and courage during Gezi Park protests and proved how important hospitality is during crisis situations,” PKF chair Michael Widman told Hurriyet Daily News.

Brooks Brothers is making a totally logical expansion into steakhouses

by John McDuling
New hot menswear accessory: the T-bone.

Brooks Brothers, which introduced Americans to off-the-rack suits, pink dress shirts, Argyle socks, and other sartorial innovations, is branching out into steaks. The oldest menswear retailer in the United States said it plans to open a large steakhouse  in New York City by next summer.

It might seem like Brooks Brothers is stretching horizontal expansion to new extremes with a foray into the restaurant business. But it’s actually not difficult to see the logic here: Brooks Brothers sells high-end, traditional clothing, mainly suits, largely to men. And meals don’t come more traditional or male than a steak dinner.

The 195-year-old company is converting a 15,000-square foot, three-level space in midtown Manhattan, around the corner from its flagship store, to create the massive steakhouse, the New York Post reports. It will be called Makers and Merchants.  If successful, the retailer could open more steakhouses around the US, according to the Post.

Arthur Wayne, a spokesman for Brooks Brothers, declined to elaborate on the company’s plans, saying the restaurant is still in the development stage. “It’s a work in progress,” he said.

It’s an ambitious and risky move for Brooks Brothers, which was bought by the Italian entrepreneur Claudio Del Vecchio’s Retail Brand Alliance in 2001 for $225 million from UK retailer Marks & Spencer. Under Del Vecchio’s stewardship, Brooks Brothers, which was founded in 1818, has undergone something of a renaissance and would appear to be making the move from a position of strength.

But New York is already blessed with a number of high-end steakhouses.  And the restaurant business is notoriously unforgiving. Many celebrity chefs, not to mention Hollywood superstars, or even the wrestling company WWE, have tried it before and failed. To be fair others, like Michael Jordan, have been more successful.

Crytek: Warface's 'sexualized' female skins were designed from regional feedback

by Alexa Ray Corriea
firehose

"the skins — which show women in revealing clothing with waists and chests exposed and have earned criticism that their proportions are anatomically exaggerated — were created from feedback provided by Russian and Chinese players"
...
"The female skins [are] a good example of how we see how culturally the different regions approach the same game in different ways," Howard said, "The skins we're showing right now are the skins that basically came out of our Russian region. They're not what our players at first requested in the Russian region. They tended to be considerably more extreme that what we ended up shipping with."
...
"It's our job to maintain that Warface has an authenticity to it that makes sense for us," he said. "They were very comfortable with the fact we have these very realistic-looking men, but they wanted the women to be not what we would think of as realistic at all. Up to and including running round in high heels which is just silly, right?"

The physically revealing female character skins in Crytek's free-to-play first-person shooter Warface were designed based on regional feedback, lead producer Joshua Howard told Wired in a recent interview.

According to Howard, the skins — which show women in revealing clothing with waists and chests exposed and have earned criticism that their proportions are anatomically exaggerated — were created from feedback provided by Russian and Chinese players. The designs for these skins will change based on feedback from each territory of Warface players, he said.

Howard added that while the Warface team are committed to male avatars in more realistic full combat gear, they were okay with dressing female avatars in "not what we would think of as realistic" gear. He added that for the Chinese market they are creating another set of "unrealistic" skins for the territory's female avatars.

"It's our job to maintain that Warface has an authenticity to it that makes sense for us," he said. "They were very comfortable with the fact we have these very realistic-looking men, but they wanted the women to be not what we would think of as realistic at all. Up to and including running round in high heels which is just silly, right?"

In response to a question as to whether Crytek has or would ever disregard community feedback in regards to wanting sexualized female avatars, Howard replied that "there's a tension both ways."

"Early on we said we want to make this game appropriate for the different regions while maintaining a cohesiveness that's still Warface," he said. "Coca Cola is Coca Cola all over the world even though honestly speaking that mix is different in many different countries. There are some products that are 100 percent identical in every region of the world and that was not something we wanted to do with a shooter because people around the world play shooters very differently."

Beyond: Two Souls review: hand in hand

by Justin McElroy

"While it's certainly their best effort yet, there are still plenty of clunky lines that fall flat. There's also a sterile, half-hearted attempt at romance that's so contrived it actually drags down many of the story threads connected to it.

The romance fails in part from the severe lack of personality in Jodie's love interest — a recurring issue for the characters that fill Beyond: Two Souls. Jodie is well rounded, but she's surrounded by cookie cutters that seem to exist only to keep her own story moving forward."

Talking about Beyond: Two Souls requires a bit of context.

Developer Quantic Dream has been trying to perfect its distinctive form of interactive storytelling for a decade now — the studio seems to have less interest in traditional games than an Old West schoolmarm. Beyond: Two Souls has no narrative ties to previous Quantic Dream titles Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain, but it shares a majority of their DNA.

On its third pass, Quantic Dream is closer than ever before to nailing a seamless interactive cinematic experience. And Beyond: Two Souls is so refined in its technique, I'm actually able to write "cinematic experience" with a straight face.

Beyond: Two Souls introduces a gifted young girl named Jodie. Like many tots her age, Jodie has an imaginary friend, but unlike, say, Mr. Snuffleupagus or Drop Dead Fred, Jodie's pal Aiden is very real, a supernatural entity with the ability to possess people, move objects seemingly on their own and heal wounds. Jodie (played wonderfully by Ellen Page) is left by frightened parents in the care of scientist Nathan Dawkins (Willem Dafoe), who becomes something of a surrogate father to the young girl as he tests the limits of her abilities.

Quantic Dream leaps chronologically though 15 years of Jodie's life, but it's not a straight shot to womanhood. Beyond's story is constantly bouncing around, hopping from a scene of Jodie training with the CIA to her first night being studied by the government to a party in her teenage years.

How exactly you interact with Jodie and the world around her varies pretty widely from scene to scene. You may need to choose whether Jodie answers a question with hostility or compassion. You may need to steer a motorcycle through winding mountain roads as you try to evade police. Or you may simply be making dinner for a new boyfriend with a series of timed button presses and thumbstick turns.

Of course, Jodie isn't the story's only protagonist — you can also switch control to Aiden at (almost) any moment with a button press. Controlling Aiden is liberating, with his ability to fly at will through walls and ceilings. He's also a great scout who can often pick up snippets of conversations Jodie would have no way of hearing otherwise. Playing as both the lead character and a spirit watching her from a distance effectively establishes a believable emotional connection between the two.

I probably could have gotten away with grousing about "quick-time events" after Indigo Prophecy. But this is Quantic Dream's third pass at this formula and it's clear that this is how the studio wants to handle action, and it seems comfortable letting players like it or lump it.

There are some genuine "action" sequences, like the aforementioned motorcycle chase or a couple of stealthy bits. But most of the higher-intensity sections ask only timed button presses to keep the action going. Beyond: Two Souls asks more that that player stay invested rather than be skilled.

Having adjusted to Quantic Dream's quirks, the only frustration I had was having so little freedom to experiment when playing as Aiden. The spirit can only possess specific people or items, and they are almost always required to move the story forward. I craved more flexibility here, a sense that I was driving the experience rather than watching from the back seat.

Beyond: Two Souls asks more that that player stay invested rather than be skilled

Beyond-review-screen-2

Despite that frustration, Beyond: Two Souls often succeeds where predecessor Heavy Rain failed because the storytelling is so much better. The performances are vastly improved — thanks in no small part to better actors — and the motion capture is staggeringly great. The detail of animations, both in faces and bodies, manages to leap right over the uncanny valley and into the realm of believability. In a few moments, like when I watched Jodie struggle gamely carrying a bale of hay into a barn, I would have sworn I was watching a real person. The environments are absolutely stunning, which helps the verisimilitude.

Unfortunately, David Cage and co. haven't made similar strides in writing. While it's certainly their best effort yet, there are still plenty of clunky lines that fall flat. There's also a sterile, half-hearted attempt at romance that's so contrived it actually drags down many of the story threads connected to it.

The romance fails in part from the severe lack of personality in Jodie's love interest — a recurring issue for the characters that fill Beyond: Two Souls. Jodie is well rounded, but she's surrounded by cookie cutters that seem to exist only to keep her own story moving forward.

The non-chronological storytelling device also frequently loses dramatic steam, zapping Jodie from intense moments in her life to more benign points. This would have been a worthwhile trade-off for flashbacks that colored the events of the future, but that's rarely the case. Typically, these shifts feel a little disjointed, despite the appreciated additional variety in settings.

Wrap Up:

Beyond's weak script is held up by its strong presentation and performances

With Beyond: Two Souls, Quantic Dream has smoothed away nearly all the rough edges in how it presents its stories. The other edge of that sword is that it lays the stories themselves bare to be judged entirely on their own. With so many of the traditional elements of gameplay stripped away, like challenge and exploration, a tremendous amount of weight is put on Beyond's story to carry the day. While it's exhilarating to see a team that has worked so hard to perfect a new way of telling stories, I couldn't help wishing they had a perfect one to tell.

'Beyond: Two Souls' review: crossing the blurry line between movies and games

by Sean Hollister
firehose

more impressed with the characterization than Joystiq, but mostly wallowing in the technical achievement

In February, video game auteur David Cage told his industry to grow up, to produce games for adults — games that have something to say. "By the time you turn off your console, the game will leave an imprint. You will think about what you've seen. That's what every creative medium should achieve."

Cage’s creative medium, however, doesn’t fit the trappings of a traditional video game. Available for PlayStation 3 today, Beyond: Two Souls is his latest, greatest attempt to build an interactive movie. Like his previous works Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy, it’s not about shooting through waves of bad guys, jumping from platform to platform, or exploring an open world. It’s more of a Choose Your Own Adventure book writ large. Most of the time, you simply point your character in a direction, pick one of the options given to you, and sometimes help your character act out actions by pressing buttons in time with onscreen prompts. Your reward is to see how the plot cinematically unfolds.

A Choose Your Own Adventure book writ large

Beyond-590-1

It sounds boring at first. But by pushing aside the traditional tropes and mechanics of traditional video games, Beyond rises above them, creating something more akin to the emotional voyeurism of a great novel. It puts compelling characters and story front and center, and touches on complex adult themes like suicide, homelessness, and rape. And like many a good movie, Beyond has star talent to thank. Ellen Page is Jodie Holmes, a young woman tethered to a mysterious entity which possesses paranormal powers, and Willem Dafoe plays Nathan Dawkins, the government researcher who has been studying and taking care of Jodie since she was a little girl.

The incredible conceit of Beyond: Two Souls is that you influence the course of Jodie’s entire life. You spend the vast majority of the game in flashbacks that span 15 years of her life, from ages 8 to 23. You’re trying to figure out who Jodie is, how she wound up running from the law, and why she's tethered to Aiden, a supernatural entity. You visit these flashbacks out of order, piecing together her memories, but also shaping them with the choices you make. The nonlinear narrative is confusing at first, switching between Jodie as an adult and as a young girl, but it pays off by keeping the story moving at a brisk pace — focusing on one theme, one mystery at a time, while subtly sneaking in bits and pieces of later revelations. This is the true game: not mastering the mechanics of how to steer Jodie and Aiden around, but figuring out which choices will get the game to give up its secrets, and piecing together the fragmented story in your head.

Somalia_01-1024

Sometimes, gameplay is as simple as an action sequence where you help Jodie get from point A to B, mimicking her onscreen actions to help her fight or run. Often, you'll control Aiden, a ghostly apparition connected to Jodie who can fly through walls, move obstacles out of the way, commune with the dead, and generally wreak all kinds of havoc by telekinetically messing with objects in the environment. It’s all simple enough that you can play the entire game using your smartphone or tablet as the controller, just tapping and swiping. Together you'll run through burning buildings, kill bad guys, and possibly save the world, accompanied by an action movie’s worth of big-budget special effects and an epic score.

At its richest, however, Beyond is far more subtle and mundane than that. It's walking into a dark, scary garage to get some cooking oil for your mother, confronting Jodie’s childhood fear. It's watching the posters on Jodie's bedroom walls change as she matures into an adult, and witnessing her heartbreak as she leaves that bedroom once and (possibly) for all. It's deciding to kiss the boy, to ask the impertinent question, to sneak that cookie from the cookie jar because Aiden can reach the top of the fridge. Some of these choices are binary and some multiple choice, part of sequences set in stone, while other experiences are totally optional. One of my favorite moments in the entire game is having eight-year-old Jodie pick up the telephone and carry on an "adult" conversation with herself. "Kids are so difficult when they can’t go outside," she remarks, until Aiden fills the line with static and she gets fed up. He just wants to play, but she’s tired of his meddling. Realizing the bittersweet nature of Jodie and Aiden’s existence from little moments like these make for some of the game’s greatest thrills.

At its richest, Beyond is subtle and mundane

How much you enjoy Beyond: Two Souls will probably depend on how much you expect to be able to change Jodie and Aiden's destiny. Like Heavy Rain or perhaps Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead, Beyond does an incredible job of making you think you have choices everywhere, while steering you towards a far more limited number of options that actually move the plot forward. There are indeed a number of branching paths in the game, including entire scenes you simply won't see in a single playthrough, and it's incredibly rewarding to find them. But for every time it feels like you've fundamentally changed Jodie's life, there are quite a number of false or forced choices, and they become obvious on a second playthrough.

Condenser_06-1024-1024

And yet, those false choices might not bug you all that much, because Jodie's character is so fully realized that there's little room for the player inside. You're not controlling Jodie so much as guiding her and protecting her, something that the game tries to drive home early on. It perhaps manifests itself most prominently in the game’s action sequences. In a clever design choice that also makes for a far more intuitive control scheme than Heavy Rain, Jodie is always already throwing punches and dodging out of the way by the time you press a button — you simply mirror the motions she's already begun, driven by her natural instincts, to make sure she succeeds. Or fails, as the case may be: some of the game's most intriguing possibilities occur when Jodie doesn't get her way. There’s no such thing as a "Game Over" screen in Beyond, and the plot will move along no matter what. Even waiting can occasionally be a choice. Just because there’s no game over doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences for your actions, though. People can die, lives can be ruined, and Jodie can wind up with emotional scars.

Beyond-590-2

Jodie feels so much like a person because you're right there with her in the most important chapters of her life. You become emotionally invested in a way few games have ever managed. That’s partly because you feel responsible for the choices you’ve made for her, and partly because most of the game’s performances are worthy of your emotion. The expressions on teenage Jodie's freckled face are incredible to behold as she goes from shy to cautious to naively excited about attending a birthday party, her first extended contact with others her age. Even when you're actively controlling her movements, Jodie's gait is full of emotion: obviously enraged, determined, heartbroken, bored, and many more depending on the circumstances.

Beyond hasn't crossed the Uncanny Valley yet

For a game with faces this detailed, the facial motion capture actually still leaves a lot to be desired. There were moments I was unable to read the complexity of expression on Willem Dafoe's face in particular because the resolution simply wasn't there, and all the characters seem to have "default" expressions that can make them appear animatronic at times. Beyond hasn't crossed the Uncanny Valley; it's still clambering up the other side, and there are times I wished that developer Quantic Dream had gone less photorealistic and more stylized.

Jodie-party-1020

Still, Beyond: Two Souls is a gorgeous sendoff for the PlayStation 3, as well-crafted a game as we've seen on the system. A surprising number of objects stand up to close scrutiny. You can see everything in the mirror in Jodie's room, watch bits of real cartoons and sports matches on the TV screen, read the headlines in a newspaper, and look at all the little bumpers under the glass top of a pinball machine. The shadowy arms over Jodie's bed as a young girl feel astoundingly real, as does the way rain trickles down the sides of a car. When you visit the scene of a catastrophe, the game makes you feel the raw intensity, playing with depth of field and swaying the camera slightly to make the bright flashing lights of ambulances and the bustle of emergency personnel seem as blinding and disorienting as they must actually be. It’s times like these where it’s clear that Beyond is more than the sum of its parts, that Quantic Dream has successfully managed to meld a fun, accessible game with a movie and built something thrilling in the process.

A gorgeous sendoff for PS3 that deserves a PS4

And yet Beyond also clearly shows the PS3's age. Its screenshots look far better than the game: all the wonderfully crafted details look pixelated at even a slight distance, their edges jagged for lack of sufficient anti-aliasing. Objects are constantly shimmering, particularly fine textures like Nathan's wool jacket, and it can be distracting at the most inopportune moments. If you have a PS3 and any interest in a game like the one I described, you need to play Beyond: Two Souls. It's an absolute gem. I'm hoping that Beyond isn't a reason to buy a PlayStation 3, though. It deserves the power of a next-gen console, and if Sony and Quantic Dream have any sense, we’ll see it on PlayStation 4 once the initial wave of sales has passed. With the power of the PlayStation 4, we could be that much more immersed in Jodie and Aiden’s world. I’d gladly go back there a few more times to see how differently their story can play out.

Beyond: Two Souls review: Ever Tethered

by Ludwig Kietzmann

"The enjoyment of any scene, then, comes from its narrative tension, because your interaction rarely exceeds a shallow tug in the direction of a dot. In other words: the story had better be worth it."

spoiler-laden verdict is hell to the no

Beyond Two Souls review Ever Tethered
Seeing dead people must be a traumatizing gift, but it can't be as bad as smelling them. While Jodie Holmes kneels next to a lifeless lump, steeling herself for a violent flash of this poor man's final moments, it becomes my job to funnel his ethereal post-existence energy - represented as a spooky mist rising from the body - right into her meticulously rendered face. Beyond: Two Souls is a game about life and death, except when it's about getting a face full of ghost farts.

It's hard to ignore Beyond's insane fluctuations between bravery and bungling as you play the dual roles of Jodie, a delicate but determined woman with psychic abilities (and the likeness of Ellen Page), and Aiden, the spectral entity tethered to her and the true source of her astonishing spoon-bending powers. When scientists try to discern the nature of their relationship, they don't know it's really you flying through the room and the walls, possessing people and riling objects as if you were firing at them with a slingshot.

The freedom you display as Aiden has a chilling effect on the people in the room, almost as if the game itself is frightened by an entity with so much agency. Like Heavy Rain before it, Beyond: Two Souls is a restrictive game that sacrifices repeatable mechanisms and emergent scenarios for a cinematic structure, with objectives propelled by the needs of the scene more than the needs of the medium itself.

Police have started busting alleged top Silk Road drug dealers

by Adrianne Jeffries
firehose

meanwhile, in Seattle

Krebs: "Agents in Seattle sought and were granted permission to place GPS tracking devices on Sadler’s car and that of his roommate, Jenna White, also charged in this case. Investigators allege that the tracking showed the two traveled to at least 38 post offices in the Seattle area during the surveillance period.

Interestingly, the investigators used the feedback on NOD’s Silk Road seller profile to get a sense of the volume of drugs he sold. Much like eBay sellers, merchants on the Silk Road are evaluated by previous buyers, who are encouraged to leave feedback about the quality of the seller’s goods and services. According to the government, NOD had 1,400 reviews for individual sales/purchases of small amounts of drugs, including: 2,269.5 grams of cocaine, 593 grams of heroin and 105 grams of meth. The complaint notes that these amounts don’t count sales going back more than five months prior to the investigation, when NOD first created his Silk Road vendor account."

After seizing the digital black market Silk Road and arresting its alleged owner, the police are now going after the users of the site. Police have arrested a man in Washington alleged to be one of the top 1 percent of drug sellers as well as four users in the U.K. with more arrests to come, according to news reports. Two Swedish men were also reportedly arrested for selling marijuana on Silk Road.

It's unclear to what degree the arrests are related to the takedown of Silk Road, but the timing is probably not a coincidence. These are the first known arrests of Silk Road users in these countries. The overall number of Silk Road busts is relatively low, considering the site did more than $1.2 billion in sales according to the FBI.

The arrest of the man in Washington, Steven Sadler, was done after authorities intercepted packages in the mail containing drugs and cash. The cops traced the drugs back to Sadler and his girlfriend with the cooperation of one of the buyers. Details on the U.K. and Swedish arrests are scarce, and it is not yet known whether data from the FBI's long-running Silk Road investigation was used.

These are the first known arrests of Silk Road users in the US and U.K.

American law enforcement gained access to a Silk Road server, meaning the police have a lot of data on transactions and private messages. More cautious users encrypted their messages, which would make it harder for law enforcement, but not everyone was so careful. The closure of Silk Road could have ripple effects for months if authorities use the data to crack down on individual sellers.

Bong Joon-ho has seen the U.S. edit of Snowpiercer and he hates it

by Rob Bricken

Bong Joon-ho has seen the U.S. edit of Snowpiercer and he hates it

Remember how everybody said Bong Joon-Ho's Snowpiercer was great? And remember how Harvey Weinstein wanted to re-edit it for stupid Americans? And then remember how Bong said Weinstein's cuts were light? Well, screw all that, because now the director is pissed about the U.S. version of Snowpiercer.

Tommo to continue selling NeoGeo X products

by Jenna Pitcher

fuck the man
NeoGeo never die

Games and accessories publisher and manufacturer of games and accessories, Tommo, Inc., plans to continue to support and distribute handheld console NeoGeo X, it announced today.

Last week, hardware company SNK Playmore issued a license agreement termination notice demanding an immediate cease and desist of manufacturing, distribution, promotion and selling of the NeoGeo X Gold Limited Edition, Mega Pack Volume 1, Classics volumes 1 - 5 and the SNK NeoGeo X Arcade Stick.

According to the announcement, Tommo denies that any breach of contract exists in its agreement with SNK Playmore and states that it will continue to support and market the NeoGeo X Gold along with its accessories and games. Tommo is demanding that SNK retract its press release and attempts to terminate the license agreement.

The agreement between Tommo and SNK was extended earlier this year until 2016 and Tommo "fully expects this agreement to be honored by all parties." Tommo states that it "has performed all of its obligations under its license agreement" and is "disappointed by SNK's sudden and unjustified termination of the agreement."

"Tommo is still taking care of all customer service and product warranties in North America as are our master distribution partners, Success in Asia and Blaze in Europe," CEO of Tommo, Jonathan Wan said in a prepared statement. "We're continuing to sell NeoGeo X products, including the NeoGeo X Gold System, Arcade Stick, Mega Pack Volume 1 and Classics Volumes 1-5. The license agreement which allows Tommo to sell and market these products remains in effect."

Ariz. to trim voting if citizenship proof lacking - Yahoo News

by gguillotte

never go

Arizona officials will seek to ban residents from voting in statewide races if they can't prove citizenship — a move that critics called vindictive in light of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that said the state couldn't require such documentation to cast ballots for federal offices. The change was announced Monday by Attorney General Tom Horne and Secretary of State Ken Bennett, both Republicans.
