The Country Music Awards Featured a Skit Slamming Obamacare

by Paul Constant

Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley sang a little duet about signing up for Obamacare on the Country Music Awards last night that had the crowd a-hootin' and a-hollerin':

Here are the lyrics:

Obamacare by mornin'/Why is this taking so long/I'm gonna wind up with hemorrhoids/If I sit here till dawn/We'll have cataracts and dementia/Oh, this is gettin' on my last nerve/Obamacare by mornin'/Over six people served.

Aren't conservatives always whining about taking the politics out of entertainment, specifically entertainment awards shows? There's strangely no outrage on conservative blogs about this skit.

In any case: They really need to fix that fucking website. These sorts of complaints won't matter in the long run, but the longer this takes, the more hits Democrats are going to suffer in the run-up to the midterm elections.

Report estimates government shutdown cost America $2 to $6 billion

by Russell Brandom

The Office of Management and Budget released a new report today surveying the economic damage from the federal government shutdown last month — and the news is grim. All told, OMB estimates the 16-day shutdown cost the country as much as $6 billion, taking between .2 and .6 percentage points off fourth quarter GDP growth. OMB also notes that the shutdown stands as the longest in US history when measured in furloughed employee-hours.

The report also breaks out specific damages from shutting down regulatory agencies. Closing the Treasury's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade bureau resulted in more than two million liters of US products left sitting at ports unable to ship. Shutting down the IRS delayed $4 billion in tax refunds. EPA inspections were also halted at 1200 sites, including waste facilities and drinking water systems. Additionally, 59 airplane accidents went uninvestigated thanks to furloughed employees at the National Transportation Safety Board.

Government research was hit particularly hard hard, with 98 percent of National Science Foundation researchers sent home on furlough, and crucial observation hours disrupted at three separate National Radio Astronomy Observatories and 10 Very Long Baseline Arrays across the countries. Four of the five nobel laureate researchers employed by the government were sent home on furlough, including three physicists at NIST and another laureate working on a space telescope at NASA.

Secret ‘Bay Bridge Troll’ Guarded the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge for 24 Years

by EDW Lynch

The Bay Bridge Troll

After the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, repair workers installed a steel mascot and protector on the eastern span of the bridge: the Bay Bridge Troll. Created by artist Bill Roan, for 24 years the unauthorized troll remained mostly hidden on a section of the bridge not visible to motorists. This year the old eastern span was replaced with a shiny new span, and the troll has at last been put on public display at the Oakland Museum of California. While the Bay Bridge Troll will likely be retired, a new troll has been made and will be placed somewhere on the newly opened eastern span, out of sight. For more on the tale of the Bay Bridge Troll, see this San Francisco Chronicle article.

Over 150 million breached records from Adobe hack have surfaced online

by Chris Welch
firehose

What's weird is that the LastPass tool says my old gmail address was part of the list, but my new non-gmail email address isn't. I changed the email address on my Adobe ID months before the hack was announced.

Things aren't getting much better for Adobe after the company endured a major security breach last month. If you believe the Sophos Naked Security blog, things may be far worse than originally thought. Adobe's initial estimate was that information on nearly 3 million user accounts was compromised during the intrusion. That number quickly ballooned up to 38 million. But according to Paul Ducklin at Naked Security, a database of Adobe user data has turned up online at a website frequented by cyber criminals. When all is said and done, Ducklin suggests Adobe's security blunder could rank among the worst in history. He says over 150 million "breached records" can be found in the database dump, which is a staggering 10GB when uncompressed. After analyzing a sample pool of records that were part of the leak, Sophos found that Adobe used some questionable encryption techniques.

For its part, Adobe is standing by its latest 38 million figure, and says that all impacted users have already been notified. The company was quick to reset passwords for everyone involved. Adobe says the perpetrators likely picked up "many invalid Adobe IDs, inactive Adobe IDs, Adobe IDs with invalid encrypted passwords, and test account data" in the breach, which may be playing a significant role in the huge total cited by Sophos. "We currently have no indication that there has been unauthorized activity on any Adobe ID account involved in the incident," a spokesperson tells The VergeLastPass has set up an online tool to quickly find out if your email address is listed in the massive database.

Report: Nintendo trademarks mysterious 'Great Detective Pikachu'

by Earnest Cavalli
Nintendo's most lucrative electric rat may be trading in his Thunderbolt attack for a Meerschaum pipe, as the publisher has trademarked something called "Great Detective Pikachu."

Normally, trademarks come and go. You're as likely to see a 'mark spawn a full-fledged game as you are to see a company sit on a term or phrase for potential future use. Great Detective Pikachu however, is a bit different as it directly ties to a recent, official video depicting a strange, talking blue Pikachu.

Scant little is known of how the game will actually perform or what Pikachu might be detecting, but it has been revealed that motion capture techniques are being used to properly animate the rodent's facial expressions and speech routines. Whether that sounds adorable or intensely terrifying comes down to your opinion on overly-anthropomorphized Pokémon.

Either way, we aren't likely to know how things play out until Nintendo decides to shed more light on this mystery.

TrueCrypt To Go Through a Crowdfunded, Public Security Audit

by timothy
An anonymous reader writes "After all the revelations about NSA's spying efforts, and especially after the disclosure of details about its Bullrun program aimed at subverting encryption standards and efforts around the world, the question has been raised of whether any encryption software can be trusted. Security experts have repeatedly said that it you want to trust this type of software, your best bet is to choose software that is open source. But, in order to be entirely sure, a security audit of the code by independent experts sounds like a definitive answer to that issue. And that it exactly what Matthew Green, cryptographer and research professor at Johns Hopkins University, and Kenneth White, co-founder of hosted healthcare services provider BAO Systems, have set out to do. The software that will be audited is the famous file and disk encryption software package TrueCrypt. Green and White have started fundraising at FundFill and IndieGoGo, and have so far raised over $50,000 in total." (Mentioned earlier on Slashdot; the now-funded endeavor is also covered at Slash DataCenter.)

Nonprofit Struggles to Raise Money for Female Pilots of WWII Rose Bowl Tribute:
The Wingtip-to-Wingtip Association is a non-profit that’s looking for a new way to bring attention to a group of pioneering women whose accomplishments were hidden from the public for thirty years after they were released from service. But their attempt to bring a parade float honoring World War II’s WASPs to a nationally televised event is turning up short of funds a mere days before their deadline.

It’s not just girls asking “Am I pretty or ugly?” on the Internet

by Casey Johnston

reddit

A sampling of posts from the Am I Ugly? subreddit.

The Internet has disseminated its fair share of concerns about insecure teen girls who are asking “am I pretty or ugly?” to possibly the last audience they should be consulting (the ever-hostile ranks of YouTube commenters). But a new examination of reddit by PsychGuides shows that teen boys aren’t immune to appearance-related anxiety. They’ve just found a different place to express them: in subreddits.

According to PsychGuides, four out of five submissions to the r/amiugly subreddit are by a male redditor, and the average age is between 18 and 19. In this subreddit, users post photos of themselves for open critique of the 35,000 subreddit subscribers and any passers-by who have thoughts.

But while men constitute most of the submissions, women make up most of the responders: 62 percent of the responses to submissions were made by female redditors 18 and under. Female submissions also get the most responses at an average of 54 replies per submission compared to male submitters’ average of 14 replies.

New update from Apple gets Mavericks and Gmail to play nice

by Andrew Cunningham
Mail in OS X 10.9.

Apple has just issued a patch specifically for Gmail users running Mail.app in OS X 10.9. The 32.46MB Mail Update for Mavericks is said to bring "improvements to general stability and compatibility with Gmail," specifically a bug that causes unread message counts to be inaccurate, and another bug that "prevents deleting, moving, and archiving messages for users with custom Gmail settings."

The support page for the fix recommends backing up your data via Time Machine or some other mechanism before installing. You can get the update either through Software Update or by grabbing it manually.

The rumor mill says that Apple is also testing some other new features and fixes for Mavericks, most notably in an OS X 10.9.1 update designed to fix minor-but-pressing problems and a larger 10.9.2 update later on. Neither of these has appeared in Apple's standard developer portal as of this writing, but given that Apple has followed this pattern for every single version of OS X to date, it's not exactly a stretch of the imagination. Apple also released version 1.0.1 of iBooks for OS X today, which includes some non-specific "bug fixes and improvements to performance and stability."

Facebook chooses Boston as the site for its fifth engineering team

by Nathan Ingraham
firehose

"One Kendall Square, in the Cambridge Innovation Center."

While New York and San Francisco are undeniably huge tech centers in the US, Boston has some impressive credentials of its own. The city is well-known for its academic institutes, a growing tech start-up scene — and massive companies like Microsoft, Twitter, and Google have a presence in the area as well. Now, Facebook's officially joining that list: the company just announced the creation of a new Boston engineering team. This marks the fifth formal engineering center for Facebook, joining others in Menlo Park, Seattle, London, and New York.

Facebook actually has had a presence in the city for some two and a half years — in a blog post, team leader Ryan Mack recounts how a small remote team in Boston worked on major projects like the Timeline and Photos products. That team is getting more formalized now and looking to hire additional hands, though Mack notes the team will start small. Initial projects will focus on infrastructure challenges like networking, storage, and security — Facebook should soon be posting open positions on its careers page.

The Mysterious Tool-Making Culture Shared by Crows and Humans

Many animal species use tools, from insects, elephants and sea urchins to apes, badgers and octopuses, but there are only two animals who make hooks to catch food: humans and crows. Why we both do this is a mystery — and unraveling it could explain the reasons why tool use evolved in the first place.

David Ortiz received most write-in votes for Boston's mayoral election

by Nathan Aderhold
firehose

"560 write-ins accounted for on Tuesday, so it's possible that his vote tally is somewhere in the triple digits."

David Ortiz is apparently such a legend in the eyes of Bostonians that many think he's fit to run the city. The Red Sox DH received more write-in votes in Tuesday's mayoral election than anyone else, according to the Boston Electoral Commission (via WGBH), effectively giving him a third-place finish in the race.

It's not unheard of for athletes to enter politics when their playing careers have ended, but it's probably not too often that one of them plays a part in an election while he's still taking home trophies. While the actual number of votes that Ortiz received is unknown, there were 560 write-ins accounted for on Tuesday, so it's possible that his vote tally is somewhere in the triple digits.

Big Papi's total is a far cry from the 71,954 votes that mayor-elect Marty Walsh got to win the election, but it's still not bad for a guy who wasn't even running (and happens to play baseball for a living). It's kind of hard to argue with the people who voted for him, he did give a pretty great stump speech.

Ortiz almost single-handedly led the Red Sox to the World Series title last month, hitting a ridiculous .688/.760/1.188 against the Cardinals to bring home the club's third championship in the last decade.

'He did include names of several honorary people involved in the project but asked a studio employee to “Greek” the names. The employee wrote actual names, never intending for anyone to read them, the statement said.'

as you see above, Gretzky's named is misspelled "Gretzsky" and he's listed as a member of the 1998-99 Detroit Red Wings. Then there's the engraving that has the Edmonton Oilers as 2003 champions and features the names of Oprah Winfrey, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Rocky Balboa and Oscar Wilde. It doesn't stop there. Other listings show more erroneous winners and even more celebrity names, such as Muddy Waters and Kanye West.

welcome to portland

I'm 23 years old and live in Vancouver, WA. I have lived here my entire life and I'm currently a part-time clark community college student. I'm finishing up a general aa degree in two quarters before I transfer to WSUV hopefully. I haven't had a real job in two years but i'm financially stable thanks to my aunt that passed away in 2000 (She was an accountant for chevron). Most of my friends are either busy working their jobs in Portland or have all moved away to some expensive university while i'm stuck here doing nothing all day but playing video games, doing a little bit of homework, watching netflix, and reading.

I tried a post like this once before and was going to hangout with one or two people that lived in the area but they got too busy with work and dropped all contact with me.

If anyone is interested feel free to pm me! I'm a really nice guy that just wants a few new friends or a group of friends to hangout with. I'm pretty lucky if I get one person texting me on a daily basis. Oh, and here's a pic of me: http://imgur.com/cgBC9 I'm tall and skinny with a deep voice.

Spooked By His Sci Fi, FBI Looked Into Isaac Asimov As Possible Communist Tipster

by timothy
v3rgEz writes "By September 14, 1960, Isaac Asimov had been a professor of biochemistry Boston University for 11 years, and his acclaimed "I, Robot" collection of short stories was on its seventh reprint. This was also the day someone not-so-subtly accused him of communist sympathies in a letter to J. Edgar Hoover. They ominously concluded that "Asimov may be quite all right. On the other hand . . . . ." The "tip off" wasn't given much credit, but it didn't matter since Asimov's science fiction writing alone was enough to warrant FBI monitoring, particularly as the FBI hunted for the mysterious ROBPROF, a communist informant embedded in American academia. MuckRock has Isaac Asimov's FBI files in full, and a write up of the more interesting bits."

Music: Great Job, Internet!: MySpace collected an anthology of short stories for the 20th anniversary of Wu-Tang Clan’s 36 Chambers

by Kevin McFarland

MySpace still exists, and now it’s publishing microfiction anthologies to commemorate classic albums. In recognition of the 20th anniversary of Wu-Tang’s 1993 album Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), MySpace solicited short stories inspired by twelve tracks on the album from authors, journalists, and rappers. Spin's Chris Weingarten imagines a rather perturbed memo from the A&R rep mentioned in GZA’s verse on “Protect Ya Neck” to Loud Records chief Steve Rifkind, and Victor Vazquez (Kool A.D. from Das Racist) adapts “C.R.E.A.M” as a conversation between Method Man and Inspectah Deck at a fancy restaurant in the 1970s. But the best story comes from perhaps the unlikeliest source, actress Vanessa Baden (little sister Kyra from Kenan And Kel), who contributes a story of two Los Angeles girls attending college in Texas while still somewhat intertwined in gang activity at home. Broken Social ...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the nation’s librarians are furious about S., the novel Abrams co-authored with Doug Dorst, taking to Internet message boards to complain amongst themselves that the book’s packaging is too frustratingly complex, stuffed as it is with easily misplaced maps, postcards, and other assorted ephemera that’s impossible to keep track of. They’re also upset that Abrams’ typically cryptic trailer gave them zero indication of what to expect when they ordered the book—orders they’re now canceling by the dozens. Upon learning that a small ...

Music: Great Job, Internet!: Buy the table from the kitchen where Joy Division's Ian Curtis hanged himself, you sick bastard

by Sean O'Neal

For those looking to one-up whoever pilfered Ian Curtis’ headstone, the creator of this tote bag, and Peter Hook’s The Light in terms of morbidly tacky tributes to the late Joy Division singer, a seller on eBay is now offering the table from the kitchen where Curtis hanged himself. The auction page chronicles the table’s journey from the kitchen Curtis shared with wife Deborah until he committed suicide in it, with the otherwise ordinary piece of furniture first being passed on to a neighbor, then being purchased at auction by its current seller, who promises that the table comes with a certificate of authenticity and, less tangibly, the certainty that you are a vulture, paying a premium to own the ghastly remnants of tragic history.

Currently that premium is up around £1,119. 00 and steadily climbing, so you’d better swoop in soon. Keep in mind that ...
