We talk a lot about diversity in comics when it comes to characters and representation. However, equally important is diversity behind the panels. Thankfully, there are comics publishers who are making diversity in the industry a priority! Top Cow recently announced two promotions that make it clear that they take this mission seriously.

As reported by The Beat, Top Cow promoted long-time collaborator Bryan Hill to the newly-created position of Story Editor in an attempt to put his storytelling strengths to good use. He’ll now be instrumental in helping to shape the stories across all of Top Cow’s books.

Meanwhile, the publisher has also promoted former Managing Editor, Betsy Gonia to Editor! Top Cow publisher, Matt Hawkins told The Beat, “Betsy…has proven herself the most organized, capable Editor I’ve ever worked with.”

Both Hill and Gonia will continue to write and color their own work, respectively, as they take on these new responsibilities, so fans of their individual work have no need to fret. As for the fact that Top Cow now has a person of color and a woman in two of its top positions, Hill had this to say:

A lot of companies talk about diversity, but how many hire writers of color? How many have people of color in editorial? Marc [Silvestri] and Matt don’t just hashtag the trend, they do the hard work of bringing in new voices, new people like me into comics and giving me the space and support to do my best work.

Well, we’re thrilled to hear it, and we only hope that it continues. (And PS – while we’re thrilled about Gonia, we certainly hope that more women join her soon!)

Swaggy P's time in L.A. may be coming to an end.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Nick Young is a "strong candidate to be unloaded" as the team seeks to clear salary cap space, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. With the pending trade for Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert and expected free agent deals with Lou Williams and Brandon Bass, Young appears a likely roster casualty in an active offseason for L.A.

The Lakers went into this summer hoping to land a big-name star but have turned to alternatives after falling short in pursuit of LaMarcus Aldridge and others. The team plans to acquire Hibbert and his $15 million salary, which the Pacers are hoping to dump on Los Angeles as they seek to go small next season, as well as some mid-tier free agents. Williams has also reportedly signed for three years and $21 million, while Bass will likely get a reasonably sized multi-year deal as well.

Those additions not only add a lot of money to the Lakers' books, but leave the team with a fairly crowded backcourt entering next season. Kobe Bryant will be healthy, No. 2 pick D'Angelo Russell should play a significant role from Day 1, Williams is the reigning Sixth Man of the Year and Jordan Clarkson is coming off a solid rookie season. There's not much room for Swaggy P with those four filling the depth chart, and a trade would clear the $16.3 million he's owed through the 2017-18 season.

Young, 30, averaged 13.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in 42 games with the Lakers last season. He missed time due to a knee injury and hasn't played more than 64 games in a season since 2009-10. One of the game's streakiest shooters and scorers, he shot better on three-pointers (36.9 percent) than two-pointers (36.3) last season. It's the first time he's shot below 40 percent from the floor in his career, but he's known more for his big scoring outbursts than consistency.

A native of Los Angeles, Young has clearly enjoyed his time with his hometown team even as they've struggled on the court. It appears the numbers game may lead to his departure this summer, however. Young has also played for the Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers in his eight-year career.

Pau Gasol is one of us. Sure, he might be 7 feet tall, ridiculously good at basketball and have more money than any of us -- but deep down he's just like us. Pau puts his pants on one leg at a time, and when it's his birthday he doesn't need some hoity-toity Belgian chocolate, gold-leafed cake. He just needs a good old fashioned cookie cake. Maybe it's a blondie cake ... either way it looks like a good cake.

The Giants defensive end suffered a severe hand injury in a fireworks accident.

New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul could miss training camp and possibly even regular season games after suffering a hand injury following a fireworks accident on July 4. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Giants are still waiting for more medical details, but there is "concern" Pierre-Paul could be out into the season.

Complete details of Pierre-Paul's injuries have not been released, but according to Dan Graziano of ESPN, Pierre-Paul suffered burns to his palm and three fingers and could have nerve damage. Pierre-Paul reportedly did not lose any fingers in the accident. The Giants are scheduled to begin training camp on July 30.

Pierre-Paul's situation is a little bit murky because of his contract status. The Giants applied the franchise tender, but he hasn't signed it yet so currently he isn't under contract. New York reportedly pulled a $60 million extension offer following the firework injury. Because the injury occurred off the field, New York could place Pierre-Paul on the non-football injury list, which would allow them to not pay him for games missed. According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, that would mean $870,000 per game if Pierre-Paul plays under his $14.8 million franchise tender. The Giants could also rescind the tender entirely which would make Pierre-Paul a free agent.

The 26-year-old is coming off one of the better seasons of his career. He bounced back from a down 2013 to record 12.5 sacks last year.

Jon Lester may have been sorely missing the American League after going without a hit (plus 15 strikeouts) in his 30 at bats for the Cubs, but he's finally on the board after this single. Lester is now 1-67 in his career. Hooray!

After video surfaced showing the Seminole QB involved in a brutal incident, Florida State has now dismissed him from the team.

Florida State dismissed freshman quarterback De'Andre Johnson on Monday night. The dismissal came after the State Attorney's Office in Tallahassee, Fla., released a surveillance video showing Johnson punching a female student at a bar in May. Johnson was already suspended indefinitely following the accusations but now the university has gone a step further, with FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher announcing Johnson has been dismissed.

Johnson currently faces a misdemeanor battery charge in connection with the incident. According to Tomahawk Nation and others, the victim suffered multiple injuries to her face. Johnson turned himself in before being released on bond. In a statement, Johnson's defense attorney Jose Baez said that Johnson is "extremely embarrassed and offers his heartfelt apologies to everyone."

Rated a three-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite, Johnson sought to compete for the starting quarterback job left open after Jameis Winston departed for the NFL. He was expected to battle with Notre Dame transfer Everett Golson and Winston's main backup from the previous season, Sean Maguire.

Garnett will be playing in his 21st NBA season next year.

Future Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett is returning to the Minnesota Timberwolves for his 21st NBA season, according to Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN. The deal is for two years with no options, although Garnett could still call it quits after next season. Garnett will get $16 million over two seasons.

Garnett was traded from Brooklyn to the Timberwolves last season in an emotional homecoming. It was the only place Garnett had agreed to waive his no-trade clause and he was instantly re-embraced by the Minnesota fans. While Garnett was technically a free agent this summer, the reality was that he was not going to pursue any other options besides re-signing with the Timberwolves to finish his legendary career.

From the moment he entered the league in 1995 directly out of high school, Garnett has enforced his own, revolutionary style of basketball. He was the fifth overall pick that year and broke out during his sophomore season in Minnesota. His range as a power forward and ability to dribble the ball was unheard of at the time. (A few years later, Dirk Nowitzki came along and carried Garnett's extremes even further.)

Garnett changed the Timberwolves franchise but became frustrated at the end. His trade to Boston netted him the 2008 NBA championship and he later moved on to Brooklyn, although that proved to be ineffective in the end. When he retires, he'll be a first-ballot pick for the NBA Hall of Fame.

To return and re-sign to Minnesota this season at the twilight of his career means the world to Timberwolves fans, who are finally building hope after some miserable years since he left. While Garnett isn't an impact player at 39 years old, he can still contribute off the bench as he plays out his career in Minnesota.

The Cardinals and Cubs do not like each other very much, and the St. Louis veterans used that to their advantage for a bit of rookie hazing:

What you're seeing is a gaggle of Cardinals rookies buying coffee at the Starbucks across the street from Wrigley Field in full uniform. Rookies always have to make the coffee and breakfast runs, but doing it in enemy territory wearing the most conspicuous apparel possible is a whole new level.

Over the weekend, a mailman was angry that the Tour de France was in the way of his mail route. Fair warning, there's some strong language in the video:

According to the Washington Post:

On Saturday, during the first stage of this year’s three-week race, a postman in Utrecht went berserk after learning the race route blocked his way. After lifting his own bike and two bags of what he described was full of "80 kilos of post" over the police barricade, he decided to tear the fence down to get by.

Even though his employer was not happy with this incident, he's still keeping his job:

"Our employees have been working for days in the heat, with jobs a complex traffic situation," a PostNL spokesperson told RTV Utrecht (via Australia’s 9 News). "Moreover, this man had taken extra work of his colleagues, in addition to his own route and he was already 20 minutes on the detour."

Okay, maybe his anger was justified, but he probably could've handled it in a calmer way than this. You know, like not threatening to punch people in the mouth, for example.

So a while ago I was either watching a video on youtube or reading an article where someone was quoting Sojourner Truth, and I don’t even remember what the thing was, but in the comments section someone had written “look up her picture, she was OLD” and then they said something mean about her looks.  I thought, I mean, it’s pretty amazing to accuse and dismiss someone born in 1797 for being old and not hot enough to listen to.

I didn't know anything about Austen Heinz when I met him, except that his behavior seemed to confirm certain notions I had about the way young men in the tech industry too often behave. To wit: They're oblivious to the concerns of women, and blind to their own biases; they talk endlessly about changing the world with technology while building frivolous things; they're arrogant and lacking in tact. I had a mental box marked "Silicon Valley tech bro" and his chatter about making women's sex organs more aesthetically pleasing fit neatly into it.

Had I known that Heinz was bipolar, I would have interpreted much of what he said through a different lens. Impulsivity, grandiosity, and logorrhea are all hallmarks of a manic state. Whether or not Heinz was in one when I met him--whichever version of Austen was doing the talking--I would have erred on the side of protecting him from his self-damaging pronouncements. That would have been putting him into a different sort of box, of course. But better that than chuck stones on the rubble pile.  

I wish I could say there's a simple lesson here. Sexism in tech is a real problem, and not something anyone made up. Extending the benefit of a doubt to everyone guilty of it would be its own form of unfairness. As I've grown up in journalism, I like to think I've followed a consistent trajectory of becoming less judgmental, more sympathetic. Recognizing that Austen Heinz was himself a victim of something beyond his control would have required a big imaginative leap, even for someone who knew enough to spot the signs. All the same, I'm sorry I didn't.
