Nintendo President Satoru Iwata Dies of Tumor

TOKYO — Satoru Iwata, who led Japanese video game company Nintendo Co. through years of growth with its Pokemon and Super Mario franchises, died July 11 of a bile duct tumor, the company said Monday. He was 55.

Iwata, president from 2002, died in a Kyoto University hospital. He had not been seen recently at game events where he was usually a participant.

Iwata led Nintendo's development into a global company, with its hit Wii home console, and also through its recent woes caused by the popularity of smartphones.

A funeral service will be held on July 17. He is survived by his wife Kayoko. The company declined to disclose other details of his family.

How Iceland Emerged From Its Deep Freeze

After Iceland’s three largest banks fell in the space of three days, the currency collapsed, the stock market fell 95 percent and nearly every business on the island was bankrupt.

Short-term suffering followed, but today, Iceland is buzzing: Unemployment is 4 percent, the International Monetary Fund is predicting 4.1 percent G.D.P. growth for 2015, and tourism is booming.

Welsh government uses Klingon to respond to serious UFO questions

by Sebastian Anthony

The Welsh government has used the Klingon language to respond to serious questions about UFO sightings in Wales. Rather than the native tongue of an extraterrestrial warrior species that inhabits the Star Trek universe, English and Welsh are usually the official languages of Wales.

It all started when Conservative politician Darren Millar, the shadow health minister, tabled three questions for Labour's Edwina Hart, the minister for economy, science, and transport:

  • Will the minister make a statement on how many reports of unidentified flying objects there have been at Cardiff Airport since its acquisition by the Welsh government?
  • What discussions has the Welsh government had with the Ministry of Defence regarding sightings of unidentified flying objects in Wales in each of the past five years?
  • What consideration has the Welsh government given to the funding of research into sightings of unidentified flying objects in Wales?

The response from the Welsh government was as follows: "jang vIDa je due luq. 'ach ghotvam'e' QI'yaH-devolved qaS." Using the Ars Orbiting HQ's universal translation matrix, that roughly translates to: "The minister will reply in due course. However this is a non-devolved matter." A non-devolved matter, sometimes known as a reserved matter, is an issue that can only be resolved by the full UK parliament rather than the devolved Welsh Assembly.

You will find bird love on Vita July 21 ⊟

Hatoful Boyfriend, the visual novel about building relationships in a school full of presumably dashing, handsome talking pigeons, will launch on PS4 and Vita July 21.

I’ve been waiting for this release, so I have yet to jump into the heart-pounding world of pigeon romance. But even if you’ve been around the flock before, there’s new stuff here for you: a new bird to romance. Tohri from the upcoming sequel will appear in this new version.

I’ve just written a whole post about a game where you date pigeons! People play it! It’s apparently good! We’ll find out!

“This is the last picture we’ll see of Pluto’s mystery spots for a long time…”

But it’s time to say goodbye to the “dark side” of Pluto – the side that won’t be facing the camera when New Horizons whizzes past. According to NASA, this face won’t be captured again during the mission. Since New Horizons took years of planning and required a nine-year journey through space, it’s safe to say we won’t get a closer look for another few decades.

The dark side is where four mysterious spots live. Pluto seems to have a dark region around its entire equator, with the other face of the planet featuring a dark whale-shaped smear. The four dots are quite uniform in size and spacing, and scientists estimate that they’re each 300 miles across.

After Moore’s Law: how phones are becoming open-source.

Although silicon foundries are still cramming more transistors on to a single chip, they are taking much longer to do so, and at a higher cost than ever. As Moore’s law yields, small communities of innovators around the world are given space to gather their strength and build products that may some day compete with mainstream providers. Today’s phenomenon of Shanzhai and open hardware is likely to be just the first shot across the bow of traditional corporate juggernauts.

Nintendo asks GitHub to make Javascript-based Game Boy emulator disappear

by Nathan Mattise

This week, GitHub posted a takedown notice it received from Nintendo of America's legal representation. The Mario makers believe that a popular Javascript-based Game Boy Advance emulator hosting its source on GitHub violated the company's copyright for the games involved.

“Nintendo requests that GitHub, Inc., disable public access to the website at http://jsemu.github.io/gba/,” the letter reads. “This website provides access to unauthorized copies of Nintendo’s copyright-protected video games and videos making use of Nintendo’s copyrighted Pokémon characters and imagery in violation of Nintendo’s exclusive rights.”

The takedown notice cites both the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and GitHub's own "Guide to Filing a DMCA Notice." In total, Nintendo identified more than 20 games and two franchises (Metroid and Pokémon) with copyright being infringed, and the individual titles run the gamut of popular (Pokémon Silver and Gold) to obscure (remember Golden Sun?). The company requested GitHub immediately remove 32 unique URLs corresponding to various emulators. The notice denotes each infringing URL, and the sites in question now deliver 404s.

Bills OL coach Aaron Kromer placed on paid leave after arrest for allegedly punching minor

by James Brady
firehose

this fucking league

Aaron Kromer was charged with battery with intent to cause bodily harm after his arrest early Sunday morning.

Buffalo Bills offensive line coach Aaron Kromer was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with battery with intent to cause bodily harm, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Rapoport tweeted out Kromer's arrest sheet from the Walton County Jail in Florida, where Kromer was booked, and later released on bond, after allegedly punching his neighbor's juvenile son.

The Walton County Sheriff's Office issued a press release with more details on the allegations:

When they arrived deputies spoke to the caller and learned three boys had been fishing on the beach when the suspect, later identified as Buffalo Bills Offensive Line Coach Aaron Kromer, and the suspect’s son confronted them over the use of beach chairs left by a beach access.

Victim’s told deputies Kromer grabbed their fishing pole and threw the pole into the water and then pushed one of the boys to the ground and punched him in the face. It was stated Kromer then told the boys to return the chairs to where they found them.

The victim stated Kromer also told him if he reported him to the police he would kill his family.

A source who spoke with Alex Marvez of FOX Sports defended Kromer, saying that the coach was being threatened and had trouble seeing the victims.

"It was dark out. He couldn't see the people," the source said. "The kids were belligerent and threatened him. Bottom line, they stole his property and he couldn't identify them because it was dark out and they threatened him."

The sheriff's office said that more charges could be filed after its investigation concludes. The Bills announced Tuesday that they have decided to place Kromer on paid administrative leave "in accordance with the league's Personal Conduct Policy while we continue to work our way through the investigative process with the league."

As part of the NFL's latest personal conduct policy, violations involving assault or battery of any kind will result in a baseline six-game suspension for first offenses. More games can be added to the suspension for "aggravating factors." In addition, anyone charged with a violent crime can be placed on paid leave until an NFL investigation is completed.

Kromer is notable for criticizing Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler last season when he was the team's offensive coordinator, saying Cutler "absolutely killed" the Bears with his poor decision-making on the field. This was in the wake of the Bears getting a lot of flak over the massive contract that was given to Cutler. Kromer wound up making a tearful apology for his comments.

After the end of the regular season, the Bears overhauled their coaching staff, and Kromer was one of the people fired from the team. New Bills head coach Rex Ryan brought Kromer along as their offensive line coach just a few weeks later. Kromer also spent time with the New Orleans Saints and served as interim head coach for six games in 2012, when multiple coaches were suspended as part of the bounty scandal.

Rugby league player makes pass through his legs while BACKFLIPPING IN MID AIR

by Hayley Byrnes

An incredible moment happened Sunday down under, with a Rugby League player from the New Zealand Warriors PASSING A FOOTBALL THROUGH HIS LEGS WHILE BACKFLIPPING IN MID AIR.

If THAT wasn't enough, the team scored a try off it, (that's basically their version of a touchdown). Talk about an assist!

Instead of panicking, Nathan Friend somehow managed to get a ball away and helped his team to a win.

Leaked Deadpool Comic-Con Footage Is Brutal, Funny And Perfect

firehose

hi otters

In other words, it’s everything fans wanted in a Deadpool movie, with a side of “big chrome cock-gobbler.”

The footage/trailer/whatever captured on cam during the 20th Century Fox Marvel Comics Panel at Comic-Con (via Polygon) is exactly as our io9 friends described it, only with more squinting and less filling in the blanks with our imagination.

Mind the quality, again this is cam footage captured off screen. 20th Century Fox could pull it at any moment, but considering leaked footage is how the movie got greenlit in the first place, I really hope they don’t.

Americans Own 42% of all the Guns on the Planet

by Lisa Wade, PhD
firehose

via ThePrettiestOne: "Basically, the people with the most guns will never, ever own enough guns to actually ever feel safe. And, honestly, they won't be."

According to Vox, the U.S. has 4.43% of the world’s population and almost 42% of the world’s population of civilian-owned guns.

This is your image of the week:

2

It’s hard to say exactly, but there may be as many guns as there are people in the U.S., or even more guns than people. Since not everyone is a gun owner, that means that the typical gun owner owns more than one. In fact, they own, on average, 6.6 guns each. Two-thirds of the guns in the U.S. are in the hands of 20% of the population. Gun manufacturers know this and market accordingly.

Gun ownership is correlated with both gun homicide and suicide. Accordingly, we also have the highest rate of gun violence of any developed country. In 2013, there were 21,175 gun suicides and 11,208 gun homicides.
