In Castle Season 4, Episode 16 “Linchpin”, the CIA’s computers have been infected by a virus. The CIA agent is looking for the virus “subroutine” (actual words) injected in their code, with a Matrix-like background, when suddenly, a JavaScript tutorial from Quackit.com that’s used to explain how to display  popups is identified as the so-called “virus subroutine”.

Critical crypto flaw in Facebook’s WhatsApp for Android exposes chats

by Dan Goodin
firehose

ha ha

The Android version of WhatsApp, the cross-platform instant messaging app purchased by Facebook for $16 billion, has a loophole that leaves chat histories wide open to other apps installed on the same smartphone, a security consultant says.

Consultant, system administrator, and entrepreneur Bas Bosschert documented the vulnerability in a blog post published Tuesday. It includes proof-of-concept code a rogue app requires to stealthily upload the chat history to an attacker-controlled server and, when working with newer versions of WhatsApp, to decrypt the file. The exploit is premised on the victim installing a malicious app that contains a game or some other useful feature and in the background accessing the database WhatsApp stores on the secure digital (SD) card of an Android device.

"The WhatsApp database is saved on the SD card which can be read by any Android application if the user allows it to access the SD card," Bosschert wrote. "And since [the] majority of the people allows [sic] everything on their Android device, this is not much of a problem."

So you’re at SXSW. And you want an up-to-the-minute cookie. What could be nicer than a customised Oreo, filled, flavoured and printed with the aid of a Raspberry Pi (in such a way that you can watch what’s happening yourself) all depending on what’s trending on Twitter at the moment? Our good friend Matt Richardson from Make (check out his book, Getting Started with Raspberry Pi – it’s great) is here to tell you what it’s all about.

There are lots of Pis in evidence at SXSW this year. I’d like to draw your especial attention to Slashathon, a music hacking event headed up by this man:

Picture thieved from Wikipedia.

We’ve donated some Raspberry Pis for the event, and we’re looking forward to seeing what happens to them. If you’re at SXSW, let us know if you see any more Pis at work in the comments.

How the NSA Exploits VPN and VoIP Traffic

great

These four slides, released yesterday, describe one process the NSA has for eavesdropping on VPN and VoIP traffic. There's a lot of information on these slides, though it's a veritable sea of code names. No details as to how the NSA decrypts those ESP -- "Encapsulating Security Payload" -- packets, although there are some clues in the form of code names in the slides.

Tech firms would pay $89B in taxes if offshore gov’t debt came home

by Cyrus Farivar

'If Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Cisco were to repatriate this money to the US, and if it were taxed at the current corporate rate of 35 percent, “it would produce a $89 billion windfall for the US Treasury—equivalent to 17 percent of America’s projected $514 billion budget deficit this year” '

According to a new report, four major American tech firms hold $163 billion in United States government debt overseas for tax reasons. That means that American taxpayers are effectively paying interest toward a corporate cash stash held abroad that likely will not return to the US anytime soon.

If Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Cisco were to repatriate this money to the US, and if it were taxed at the current corporate rate of 35 percent, “it would produce a $89 billion windfall for the US Treasury—equivalent to 17 percent of America’s projected $514 billion budget deficit this year,” according to the report, published Wednesday by the UK's Bureau of Investigative Journalism (BIJ). “The amount invested by Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Cisco is so large they would collectively be the 14th biggest overseas purchaser of Treasury securities, above Singapore and Norway.”

That same day, Bloomberg reported that US-based firms added $206 billion to offshore profits in 2013—and over 18 percent of that increase came solely from Microsoft, Apple, and IBM.

$5 discount to give up unlimited data? Time Warner Cable customers say “no”

by Jon Brodkin

all carriers suck forever

Time Warner Cable has been offering customers $5 monthly discounts in exchange for giving up unlimited data for the last couple of years, but almost no one has taken the company up on its offer.

Time Warner Cable CEO Rob Marcus spoke at Deutsche Bank's Annual Media, Internet & Telecom Conference yesterday, saying that only "thousands" of its 11.5 million subscribers have opted for metered billing.

"I guess about two years ago we rolled out a 5GB-a-month service. Since then, roughly six months ago, we rolled out a 30GB-a-month service across the entire footprint, and if you buy that service you can save about five bucks a month off the unlimited product," Marcus said.

Google Fiber expansion moves fast, San Antonio approves construction

by Jon Brodkin

Google last month announced that it's talking to 34 cities in nine metro areas nationwide about installing Google Fiber, and it looks like San Antonio, Texas is the first to move ahead."On Thursday, the City Council approved a long-term contract with Google Fiber Texas, LLC., allowing the tech company to install about 40 so-called 'fiber huts' at San Antonio libraries, fire and police stations, and other city buildings," the San Antonio Express-News reported today.

Fiber huts are one of the main components of Google's fiber networks. When Kansas City construction began in 2012, Google said, "we’ll be routing fiber connection into Kansas City, KS and Kansas City, MO through several equipment aggregator huts, aka 'Google Fiber Huts.' From the Google Fiber Huts, the fiber cables will travel along utility poles into neighborhoods and homes."

According to the San Antonio Express-News report, the contract approved today "allows Google Fiber to lease space for its fiber huts... for an initial 20-year period. The lease may be extended in five-year segments for another 15 years. The market-rate rent Google will pay escalates each year by 3 percent."

After borking high-profile crowdfunding campaigns, PayPal updates policies

by Megan Geuss
firehose

hooray; #nevergo anyway

On Wednesday, PayPal announced that it would be working with crowdfunding platforms to stop unnecessary freezes of project funds. The policy change involves identifying crowdfunding campaigns early on and expediting payment to those that have made their obligations to campaign donors transparent.

PayPal doesn't have the greatest track record when it comes to transferring funds to donor-based projects. And problems came to a head in September 2013 when the company froze the assets or limited the accounts of three high-profile fundraisers within the span of two weeks. PayPal's uncooperative responses to the account holders set off a flurry of bad press.

Wild demands

Initially, PayPal froze $45,000 in funds that were raised by indie e-mail client developer Mailpile, citing the potential for fraud. PayPal told Mailpile that those funds would remain frozen “for a full year or until they have a verifiable 1.0 release of their product.” Mailpile's other option was to send PayPal "an itemized budget and your development goal dates" for the project. None of those demands seemed justified to Mailpile's Iceland-based developers.

Space Engineers: Survival mode is go

So, now that the multi-player is reasonably patched they have gone back to their once very Thursday update schedule. They hinted earlier this week about what this update would bring and everyone guessed right, survival mode is now live.

Still alpha of course, but this is starting to look like they are going to deliver a very good game.
