Gay Firefox developers boycott Mozilla to protest CEO hire [Updated]

by Sam Machkovech

Yesterday, after nearly a year of searching, the Mozilla Foundation announced the hiring of longtime CTO Brendan Eich as its new CEO. The internal hire looks like Mozilla opted for a technological leader to head up the front office as opposed to a business school expert, though at this point, Eich's coding chops (inventing JavaScript, co-founding Mozilla) have possibly been outpaced by his past nine years of Mozilla leadership work.

But much of the public reaction to his promotion skipped past that "can a coder run a company" question, focusing squarely on another financial issue. In 2008, Eich donated $1,000 in support of California's Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that sought to ban gay marriage in the state. So shortly after the announcement of Eich's hiring, the reaction came swiftly. In particular, developers came forward with a mix of boycotts and reluctant acceptance.

App developer Rarebit ignited the conversation by announcing that it pulled its apps from the Firefox Marketplace. In a statement, Rarebit CEO Hampton Catlin recalled the story of his own gay marriage experience in California, which allowed him to marry Rarebit co-founder Michael Catlin. Catlin called Eich out for both his Prop 8 donation and his choice not to apologize.

Newswire: Now you can add your bullshit rules to Monopoly, too

by John Teti

Not satisfied to desecrate the Scrabble dictionary with crazy crowdsourced make-’em-ups, Hasbro has invited players to tamper with the rules for another of its iconic board games, Monopoly. The company is soliciting nominations on its Facebook page for a new house rule that will be included in the official Monopoly rules guide starting in 2015. While this new wrinkle will not affect the official rules, it will be quasi-official enough to be included with every copy of the game that Hasbro prints.

Hasbro said in a press release that some 70 percent of Monopoly players never read the rules, and that might be a conservative estimate. Not many games of Monopoly follow the official rulebook. For instance, few people observe the rule that an unowned property must be put up for auction if a player lands on it and chooses not to buy it for the listed price. (This ...

More Reasons To Stop Watching Animal Planet

by Jason G. Goldman on Animals, shared by Charlie Jane Anders to io9
firehose

'Earlier this year, Mother Jones published the results of a massive 7-month investigation of the "reality" show Call of the Wildman, which features a man named Ernie Brown Jr. (aka "Turtleman") who captures so-called "nuisance animals." The critters are causing trouble for businesses or homeowners, and the Turtleman releases them elsewhere, ostensibly allowing those animals a second chance at life. In many places, there is legislation in place that allows for the killing of problem animals. If that were the whole story, it would actually be doubly heartening: an educational show that also has a measurable impact on animal welfare. If only.

The Mother Jones investigation, led by James West, found:

evidence of a culture that tolerated legally and ethically dubious activities, including: using an animal that had been drugged with sedatives in violation of federal rules; directing trappers to procure wild animals, which were then caught again as part of a script; and wrongly filling out legal documents detailing the crew's wildlife activities.'
...
'Now, Mother Jones has come back with a follow up to their original piece. Add breaking Kentucky wildlife law to misinformation and improper animal care to the list of sins:

A photo obtained by Mother Jones from a person who worked on the production shows a coyote that was captured at the request of producers and held in a cramped trap for an unknown period of time prior to filming on location in Kentucky, according to the person who provided the photo. By the time of the shoot, according to two people who worked on the production, the coyote was "sick and unresponsive" and had to be replaced.
According to internal production documents and communications obtained by Mother Jones, the show quickly brought in a replacement coyote for the shoot from Ohio. Kentucky law, with rare exception, forbids the importation of coyotes.
According to internal documents and data analysis of the photo, the sick coyote had been held captive for more than three days after it was trapped by a licensed nuisance wildlife control operator working for the show. Without a specific permit—which the NWCO working for the show did not have—Kentucky regulations forbid holding captured wildlife for more than 48 hours.
Mother Jones has also obtained government documents showing that state wildlife regulators began warning the show's star about violations in March 2012—more than a year before Sharp Entertainment, the producer of the show, says that it first became aware of complaints about animal mistreatment in connection with Call of the Wildman.

That's of course in addition to the fact that the cage in which the coyote was confined - pictured above - is far too small for continued holding, and only a last resort for transport, according to a University of Kentucky Professor of wildlife ecology and conservation biology interviewed for the Mother Jones piece.'

More Reasons To Stop Watching Animal Planet

You already knew that Animal Planet had a way of distorting reality . They present documentaries about the existence of mermaids and Bigfoot and only barely acknowledge that it's all nonsense. But now evidence is mounting that some of the shows they air actually harm animals.

What Happens When A Student In A Hot Pink Top Walks Through Cairo University

firehose

TW: harassment

'Wearing a pink top and tight jeans, the young woman is whistled and shouted at as she makes her way through the site amongst a growing group of men following her.

University guards are seen in the clip, which has gone viral on social media, escorting her off the premises after she hid in a toilet to escape the group, who were allegedly trying to remove her clothes.

The Dean of the Cairo University Law School, Gaber Nasser, has since sparked anger after he appeared to blame the girl by saying her outfit was "a bit unconventional". He told Egyptian channel ONTV: "This girl entered the university wearing an abaya [a loose cloak] and then took it off in the faculty, and appeared with those clothes, that caused, in reality - but this doesn't justify at all [the incident]."'

IDW Invents New 'Dexter's Laboratory' Comic

by Matt D. Wilson
IDW Dexter's Laboratory Comic mainIDW

It seems Dexter’s variant Powerpuff Girls cover cameo was merely a teaser of things to come. IDW is expanding its line of Cartoon Network line of comics with a brand new ongoing series based on Dexter’s Laboratory, and it promises to continue the science-based sibling rivalry between Dexter and his sister Dee Dee.

The new series, written by Li’l Gotham‘s Derek Fridolfs and with art by Ryan Jampole (Mega Man), takes off next month.

“As someone who grew up with an older sister I fought with, I feel a certain kinship to Dexter (I’m still working on the boy genius part),” Fridolfs said via an IDW press release.  “I’ve always enjoyed the clever stories and look forward to helping Dexter achieve success, even despite himself. This is gonna be a blast!”

IDW’s Cartoon Network line already includes comics based on The Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10 and Samurai Jack. In June, characters from those books, along with Dexter and Ed, Edd and Eddy, will team up for the crossover Super Secret Crisis War. Eventually, characters from Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Grim Adventures of Billy and MandyJohnny BravoCodename: Kids Next Door, and Cow and Chicken will appear in tie-in one-shots.

Mark Gatiss Questions Steven Moffat’s Idea Of Gallifrey Returning On Doctor Who

firehose

“Every time you go back to Gallifrey, it starts to make the Time Lords a bit too domesticated,” said Gatiss. “I know that’s why Russell T. Davies came up with the whole idea of the Doctor being the last one because eventually if you see them so often they become a bit like a bunch of MPs, whereas if you talk about them as this amazing, powerful force, they’re much more exciting.”

Steven Moffat made some big moves in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor. Big moves which included the canon-altering inclusion of the thought-dead Time Lords. While fans had mixed reactions to the idea, it seems frequent Moffat collaborator Mark Gatiss falls squarely on one side of the fence.

A Dogecoin-sponsored NASCAR is happening after group raises more than $44,700

by Josh Lowensohn
firehose

'That includes an accidental $13,500 donation by the founder of payments service Moolah.io, who added an extra zero to his contribution, though stuck with the mistake and offered others who matched 10 percent of it with a pass to the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama'

'The funding includes plans to wrap the outside of the stock car with Dogecoin branding, a design project that's been sourced by Redditors in that group.'

Social site Reddit is no stranger to raising funds for various projects, though this latest one may be the most unlikely yet. After noticing NASCAR driver Josh Wise was sponsorless, members of /r/Dogecoin — a part of Reddit for tracking the cryptocurrency — decided to pool money together to sponsor it themselves. After less than a week, the group's now hit that goal, and raised more than $44,700. That includes an accidental $13,500 donation by the founder of payments service Moolah.io, who added an extra zero to his contribution, though stuck with the mistake and offered others who matched 10 percent of it with a pass to the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama.

A racecar with Doge on it

The funding includes plans to wrap the outside of the stock car with Dogecoin branding, a design project that's been sourced by Redditors in that group. The Dogecoin logo itself features a cartoonish version of the Shiba Inu dog, which was the top internet meme last year. That dog, which is actually named Kabosu, lives in Japan with its owner who teaches kindergarten. The cryptocurrency named after the meme and featuring Kabosu's likeness was introduced last December, and is valued far lower than the more well-known Bitcoin.

The NASCAR funding effort is not directly affiliated with the Dogecoin Foundation, a non-profit group set up to work on charitable projects. So far that group has raised $20,000 to provide children in need with service dogs, as well as another project for clean drinking water in Kenya.

"Sub-Biosphere 2 is a closed, self-sustaining underwater...

"Sub-Biosphere 2 is a closed, self-sustaining underwater habitat designed as a base for aquanauts, tourists and for studying oceanographic life science. The design was inspired by Phil’s love of diving, his childhood fascination with Jacques Cousteau and Ian Koblick, and studying the original Biosphere 2 scientific research facility in Arizona as a student.

Underwater human habitation is an idea that’s been around forever. NASA astronauts already do sub-sea mission training, and closed-system environments such as advanced submarines and the International Space Station are already very well-developed.

The structure would play a role as a ‘global seed bank’, storing and sustaining human, plant and animal life. Sub-Biosphere 2 would offer a long-term habitat for around 100 people – the minimum number that would be required to rebuild our species in the event of a catastrophic man-made or natural disaster. Land-based events have wreaked havoc on life on Earth before, in the case of the dinosaurs and in more localised events such as supervolcanic eruptions and pandemics. If we cannot avoid a runaway greenhouse effect, it may be that we may be safer living underneath the sea in the long-term.

The structure has integrated systems to supply and manage air, food, fresh water and electricity. While the central biome monitors life-support systems, humans, plants and animals would live and interact around the eight surrounding domes. These biomes recreate Earth’s biosphere – the regions of the land, sea and air which hold life, known as the lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere respectively.

Each biome recreates a different climactic zone on Earth, exchanging water and air flow between each other, mimicking the way in which Earth’s climates interlink. Zones would include the North Frigid Zone (the Arctic), North Temperate Zone, Torrid Zone, South Temperate Zone and the South Frigid Zone (the Antarctic).

To raise public awareness, the Sub-Biosphere 2 is a central feature of a young adult sci-fi novel, Moral Order, created by Phil Pauley and due to be published later this year. The book has been best described as Harry Potter meets Star Trek. The underwater biosphere is part of a vision of the future in which the remaining citizens of a climate change-ravaged Earth are seeking salvation beneath the sea. The novel will be the first element of what is hoped to be a multimedia franchise designed to ignite the interest of a global audience in sustainability and climate change. Beyond raising awareness, a further aim of the franchise is to raise funds to demonstrate the first Sub-Biosphere 2 research facility.”

'Jem' creator, fans call out movie reboot all-male production team

…The most interesting thing about this 21st century Jem reboot was that the producers seemed pretty serious about getting the fans onboard. In their admittedly bro-heavy announcement video, Blum, Braun, and Chu explained that they were looking to crowdsource ideas for the movie: casting, music, everything. This was going to be a Jem and the Holograms movie for the social media generation, and that meant stirring up some excitement on Tumblr and Twitter.

Unsurprisingly, it turned out that what the fans wanted was a Jem movie with at least some professional input from women. Specifically, they wanted the show’s original creator, Christy Marx, who also worked on multiple other children’s cartoons including G.I. Joe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Conan the Adventurer.

Posting to Facebook, Marx wrote that she had “no inkling” that a Jem movie was in the works until a few days before the public announcement.

This sucks exceptionally hard. Christy is an old friend, and one of the most experienced women in animation. They couldn’t even have brought her in to consult? What the hell is wrong with these people??

Christian School Expells Eight-Year-Old Tomboy

by Dan Savage
firehose

Virginia #nevergo

Because if there was on thing Jesus really fucking hated, you know, it was tomboys:

Sports, sneakers, and short hair; it's what makes eight year old Sunnie Kahle unique. It's also what had her removed from Timberlake Christian School.... The family received a letter telling them that if their eight year old granddaughter didn't follow the school's "biblical standards," that she'd be refused enrollment next year. She's out and in public school now. "She cries every morning to get on the bus, she cries when she comes home because she wants to go back to Timberlake Christian with her friends," said Doris Thompson.

Doris and Carroll Thompson are Sunnie's grandparents. They adopted and raised the little girl and took her out of Timberlake Christian School when they received a letter from the school's K-8 Principal. "You're probably aware that Timberlake Christian School is a religious, Bible believing institution providing education in a distinctly Christian environment," read Doris from a part of the letter. The letter goes on to say that students have been confused about whether Sunnie is a boy or girl and specifies that administrators can refuse enrollment for condoning sexual immorality, practicing a homosexual lifestyle or alternative gender identity.

Good thing the woman at the well was all gender-normative and shit—otherwise Jesus would've cast the first stone for sure
