Comcast is the one who should pay for network connections, Cogent claims

by Jon Brodkin

Internet backbone operator Cogent has long expressed its displeasure with Comcast's demands for payment in exchange for accepting Netflix video and other traffic.Comcast has argued that the data Netflix sends into its network creates an imbalance that should be rectified by payments from Netflix and its transit providers like Cogent. Netflix decided to pay Comcast—but Cogent has held out.

Today, Cogent CEO Dave Schaeffer made a different argument, saying that Comcast is the one who should be paying for connectivity. He did so while testifying in front of a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Comcast's planned acquisition of Time Warner Cable.

Schaeffer pointed to the fact that Comcast is not considered to be a so-called "Tier 1" network. There are a dozen or so Tier 1 networks that make up the closest thing the Internet has to a backbone. Tier 1 networks can reach every part of the Internet simply by peering with one another. Other networks buy "transit" in order to access the rest of the Internet. Peering is a point-to-point connection only, which doesn't necessarily guarantee passage of traffic to any networks beyond the two involved in the connection.

Portland has 10 times more people cycling to work than the average US city

by Commentary
Just like in Portlandia.

The number of US workers skipping bus or car and bicycling to work jumped 60% in the last decade.

Men were more than twice as likely to take a two-wheeled commute as women and bicycle commuting also was more common in college towns and in a few cities that promote it, the US Census Bureau reports today.

Overall, bicyclists account for just 0.6 % of all commuters, but in Portland, Oregon, they were 6.1% and in college towns Santa Cruz, California, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, it topped 7%.

People with a graduate or professional degree or those with less than a high school degree—0.9% and 0.7% of them, respectively—were most likely to pedal to where they collected their paychecks. The report called Modes Less Traveled also looked at walking to work, which was most prevalent in Boston. Workers with incomes of $200,000 or more walked to work at higher rates than those in three income categories below them, the Census researcher wrote, reflecting the pedestrian-friendly cities of New York, San Francisco and Washington, DC.

The median commute time for walkers took 11.5 minutes, for bicyclists 19.3 minutes versus 25.9 minutes for all other workers (except those who work from home). Bicyclist and walker numbers may be understated because those who combine people-power with a bus or other mode of travel are not counted.

Five major US cities highest portion of workers bicycling in:

At college towns such as Boulder, Colorado, 10.5% and in Berkeley, California, 8.1% bicycle to their jobs.

“It does everything: You save money, you get exercise, you’re outside,” says Carol Goodloe, a US Department of Agriculture senior economist who rides eight miles each way. “And you’re not messing with traffic every day.”

By Lawrence LeBlond, writing at redOrbit.com.

With the ongoing threat of the dangerous Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus, experts have been feverishly looking for a source of the infection, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 130 people since first being detected in June 2012 – and first reported three months later in September 2012.

Studies on the virus have revolved around bats, goats, sheep, and camels, with the most reliable sources having been camels, based on several recent reports. A study conducted by scientists at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna shows that the MERS coronavirus in man and camels from a single region are most identical. Their findings, which indicate the virus has been transmitted from camels to humans, is published in the journal Eurosurveillance.

While it has been confirmed recently that the Arabian camel is the origin of the infectious disease, the transmission pathways of the disease have not been clear until now.

Norbert Nowotny and Jolanta Kolodziejek, virologists from the Institute of Virology, have been investigating the transmission pathways of the MERS coronavirus and found that the virus from infected humans and Arabian camels from the same geographical region share nearly identical RNA sequences.

“This indicates transmission between animals and man. The process is referred to as zoonosis. With this knowledge we can specifically react to the spread of the virus. Vaccinations of camels are currently being discussed. We will thus be able to halt the spread of the virus,” Nowotny said in a statement.

Great Job, Internet!: Relive the coin-op glory days with this arcade-themed photo set

by Christopher Curley

For those of a certain era and disposition, the Flickr pool Growing Up In Arcades: 1979-1989 conjures up memories of entire weekends and after-school hours consumed with turning hard-earned allowance dollars into countless hours of pinball, air hockey, and cabinet play. It’s a glimpse into a time when the arcade was a massive, multi-billion dollar entertainment fixture–crazy ‘70s and ‘80s fashion, seediness, and all. You can practically smell the cigarette smoke. And for those who were a little too young to have enjoyed the heights of the arcade era personally, the collection is a window into the inspiration for recent pop culture hits like Wreck-It Ralph, only with fewer fanciful cartoons and more pizza parties and knife fights. Newswire: Matthew Lillard apparently too much of a poseur for SLC Punk sequel

by Sean O'Neal

Last year, director James Merendino first announced plans to develop a sequel to SLC Punk!, his 1998 film that unflinchingly captured the punk scene as the After-School Special with brief forays into romantic comedy that it is. Just a couple days ago, Merendino confirmed that SLC Punk 2: Punk’s Dead would begin shooting next month, with the return of original cast members Devon Sawa (Sean), Adam Pascal (Eddie), James Duval (John The Mod), and even Michael Goorjian as Heroin Bob, whose character is so punk he not only [spoiler alert] won’t let his death from a drug overdose keep him from appearing in a sequel, he also apparently managed to father a son, Ross, who will be a central part of the new cast. That new cast also includes The Amazing Spider-Man’s Hannah Marks, Twilight’s Sarah Clarke, and rapper Machine Gun Kelly, because this is ...

Another FCC commissioner asks Tom Wheeler to delay net neutrality vote

by Adi Robertson

Not long after FCC Commissioner Jennifer Rosenworcel asked agency chair Tom Wheeler to delay bringing his controversial net neutrality proposal to the table next week, another commissioner has also come out against the plan. "I have grave concerns about the Chairman's proposal on Internet regulation and do not believe that it should be considered at the Commission's May meeting," said Ajit Pai in a short statement. Instead, he urged the commission to spend its May meeting focusing on the upcoming spectrum auction. Previously, Rosenworcel expressed concerns about "rushing headlong" into a proposal without providing ample time for public response, but reports have suggested that Wheeler declined to take her advice.

Wheeler's compromise plan, drafted after a stinging legal defeat in January, hasn't satisfied commissioners on either side of the political aisle. Pai, an outspoken conservative, has called net neutrality "a solution in search of a problem," putting him in stark contrast to both Rosenworcel and Mignon Clyburn, who promised to uphold a "free and open internet" in a blog post yesterday. Pai's views are echoed by Commissioner Michael O'Rielly, who recently published an op-ed arguing that Wheeler's rules were based on Congressional authority that didn't exist. For many conservatives and libertarians, no net neutrality rules are good net neutrality rules, and Wheeler's proposal still attempts to establish a baseline service quality requirement. For more generally liberal net neutrality proponents, the rules let ISPs establish a "fast lane" for companies that pay for better delivery speeds.

The exact details of Wheeler's plan, however, haven't been released. They're supposed to be discussed at a meeting on May 15th, when the FCC will determine whether or not to approve a draft of the proposal. Protesters have already gathered outside the FCC offices ahead of the meeting, and over a hundred companies, including Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, have issued a statement opposing the proposal.

Newswire: Yes, Courtney Love wrote the note that was in Kurt Cobain's wallet when he died

by Marah Eakin

The wry, fairly insulting note about Courtney Love that was found in a dead Kurt Cobain’s wallet was, in fact, written by Love. The handwritten note, recently made public alongside various other photos from the scene of Cobain’s 1994 suicide, made fun of the couple’s marriage vows, and included lines like, “Do you Kurt Cobain take Courtney Michelle Love to be your lawful shredded wife even when she’s a bitch with zits and siphoning all yr money for doping and whoring.” Naturally, its tone made Cobain’s ever-skeptical fanbase once again question whether Love had somehow played a role in the Nirvana frontman’s death.

After Cobain biographer Charles R. Cross suggested earlier this week that the note was written by Love herself, Love went ahead and confirmed it to The Guardian. In an interview with the British newspaper, Love said she “obviously” wrote it, and ...

The Absolute Worst Trope In Science Fiction Romance Novels

by Charlie Jane Anders
firehose

"It's any situation in which one person (99% if the time, it's a woman) is taken advantage of by another (usually a hunky male alien), but the author justifies it by trying to blur the lines between rape and consensual sex. Let me give you the most common scenario: Hunky male alien (who's race has a lack of females for some reason) steals an Earth Woman. He then uses mental manipulation, drugs, alcohol, pheromones, some sort of required physical bonding, or other alien-contrived reason to get between the woman's legs. The author then explains how much the woman enjoyed it, how much pleasure the alien gave her, how big his super-amazing cock was and how she probably wouldn't have resisted anyway. Right?

Wrong. This is rape. Period. It's like slipping the Earthling a date-rape drug."

The Absolute Worst Trope In Science Fiction Romance Novels

There's a lot to celebrate about science fiction romance novels — apart from anything else, they're one of the fastest-growing areas of the genre, and they're getting a lot of people reading science fiction. But there's one trope in the genre that writer C.E. Kilgore finds really repulsive: "dubious consent."

Gotham Showrunner Talks His Batman-less Show: “Look, Most Stories That People Tell Don’t Have Batman In Them”

Entertainment Weekly did an interview with Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller, and there are a lot of interesting tidbits in there—how Gotham will compare visually to the Batman movies, whether the Joker will show up eventually, comparisons to Agents of Shield, the bold claim that ickle Bruce Wayne actor David Mazouz (he of the "tragic gravitas") is better than all other Batman actors in the history of ever. But I've put my favorite bit in the headline. How do you do a Batman movie without Batman, Bruno Heller? "Most stories that people tell don’t have Batman in them," so back off his jock, OK? Lauded animated film director Hayao Miyazaki says anime suffers when the people making it can’t stand observing real people.

Gotta say, I completely agree with him, having basically lived with anime since I was…what…five?

I think this could be why I have trouble getting into anime more than I used to. I still enjoy some anime movies (Studio Ghibli work of course and movies like Summer Wars, Steamboy and Metropolis).

Basically.  Because holy shit, so much moe anymore.  So much ‘harem’ animation.

Last animes that I watched all the way through were Soul Eater and Princess Tutu which both had great stories and great animation in them.
